you can see traffic is slowing smoothly now, but it was backed up for miles when we first got here. take a look at some of the video we shot earlier. the chp says the accident involves a dump truck, and white car, at about c2:00 this mornin. you can see the horrific scene with the car overturned and smashed with first responders trying to help. the accident shut down four

lanes, but some cars were able to get through on the right lane. again, this happened at about 2:00 this morning. one person died. back here live, we are trying to still figure out the identity of that victim. the cause of this accident has still not been released to us yet, but they are still investigating the cause of this accident. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, back to you, mike. >> that's right, sharon talked about the clearing of the roadway, so while we do follow the cause or effects of the tragedy with more investigation going on there, we do know one person died, but all lanes did clear as sharon said, about a half hour ago. quickly recovering the backup went almost back to 242 but back at speed through contra costa county out of pleasant hill and down toward walnut creek. great recovery there. highway 4 not showing any early slowing out of antioch, typical of a friday. we have a smooth flow of traffic but traffic down 680 continuing down toward al costa. there is a crash, sounds like

everything is off of the roadway and no speed interruptions there, just that out of the altamont for west 580. the south bay shows a smooth drive as well, there's 101 traveling through san jose, a smooth flow of traffic there as well. dry but misty in some spots, not in this shot. >> yes, in through san jose, mike, we're not really seeing the cloud cover just yet, so it's cool, but it's clear, and san jose through the afternoon we will notice some building cloud cover through about 8:00 a.m., it will be a combination of sun and clouds, and look at how slow we are to warm. that's because that cooling trend is where we're holding on to, not just in the south bay, let me show you one of our typically hotter spots, concord, well, also expect to notice significant cooling through the afternoon. that's thanks to the clouds that's going to help or stop those from warming up into the afternoon. 70 degrees, it will help us keep cool. along the coastline, expect to see the chance of some drizzle in the next couple of hours, we have an approaching system and it's still going to be a little windy now as we head in towards

the weekend, i'm talking about the possibility of some rain chances for napa and sonoma and sierra snow. more details shortly. to a live look at capitol hill, where this morning the number of u.s. house representatives supporting the impeachment inquiry into president trump is growing. more details are emerging about the whistle-blower complaint against the president, as "today in the bay's" chris pallone reports, president trump is said to be seething about the prospect of facing impeachment. >> reporter: president trump speaking with diplomats and their families in new york thursday, talked about white house officials mentioned in the whistle-blower report, and alluded to execution in this los angeles times audio. >> i want to know who's the person who gave the whistle-blower, who's the person who gave the whistle-blower the information? because that's close to a spy. you know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart, right? the spies and treason, we used to hand tell a little differently than we do now. >> reporter: republicans

defending the president are using an admission in the whistle-blower's complaint to attack its credibility. >> it's clear to me it's a narrative being created from secondhand sources and what i want to know is, who told the whistle-blower about the phone call. >> reporter: the complaint made public thursday accuses the president of abusing his power by asking the leader of ukraine to investigate trump's political rival joe biden, and trying to cover it up by locking down access to the call's details in a system reserved for the nation's most sensitive secrets. >> that is a very clear act of obstruction of congress with its own set of serious consequences. >> reporter: democrats believe testimony from the director of national intelligence thursday strengthened their case. >> i think the whistle-blower did the right thing. >> reporter: attorneys for the whistle-blower say they want to speak to congress directly, but there's no agreement yet. chris pallone, nbc news, washington. >> during his call with the ukrainian leader, president trump mentioned a sunnyvale based cyber security company called crowdstrike telling him

to loo into it. few years ago democrats used crowdstrike to determine who hacked into dnc servers and leaked hillary clinton's emails. president trump hinted the server is now being held in the ukraine, that has been repeatedly disproven. >> it is 5:05. happening today, dozens are planning to hold climate change protests outside chevron's global headquarters in san ramon. it's all being planned by a group called youth versus apocalypse. they'll gather in a few hours demanding that chevron stop using fossil fuels. this comes after worldwide climate change protests last week, thousands of people took part here in the bay area. many are calling it a major break-through at san jose's presentation high school. it is launching a full investigation into allegations of past sexual abuse at the all girls campus. the accusations go back years, and nbc bay area first broke this story two years ago. the new president took over this summer, she says the time is right for an external

investigation. one former student says the school ignored her complaints for years, is happy about the latest developments. >> it's something that i am and thousands of community members have been asking for almost two years now. >> more than a dozen former students have accused the school of dismissing their complaints about sexual contact by faculty and staff. allegations range from nearly three decades ago to as recently as 2017. the school also issued its first ever apology to the victims. again our investigative unit has been reporting this story from the very beginning. we'll continue to follow the new developments in the case as they unfold. you can see all of our past reports, head over to nbcbayarea.com, click on "investigations." new this morning, alameda county and san jose can now declare emergencies to build homeless shelters and housing. it's a tool already available to san francisco, oakland, berkeley and santa clara. the governor expanded that law this week. it's one of 13 new bills he

signed into law to fast track construction of homeless shelters. one of the laws aloss los angeles to bypass certain restrictions and build supportive housing immediately. president trump criticized california leaders over a homeless crisis before his visit to the bay area last week. a live look at the golden gate bridge, where apparently less golden gate transit buses are crossing these days. an agency blames that on a dispute with bus drivers. golden gate transit says for about the past week an average of 15 bus trips per day are being lost due to staffi ining issues, it believes the sick calls are timed to ongoing strikes with the union. a spokeswoman says the contract expired nearly one year ago. the union meantime is not commenting. today marks the return of an annual tradition. 15 years old, the million fathers march, organizers say schools in at least 81 u.s. cities will celebrate, that includes pittsburg's martin luther king, jr., high school. this morning, fathers and father

figures of all kinds will help walk and welcome children to campus. that event also includes a march around campus and a motivational speaker, talking about the importance of male role models. a contra costa non-profit is stepping up to assist antioch schools with its free lunch program. the group white pony express will donate hundreds of pounds of food every week to food pantries at two antioch schools. the group will also get help for the food pantries to try to get them off the ground. if you love legos, look no further than the bay area. the first legoland discovery center in the state is opening at the great mall in milpitas. kids from stratford school helped break ground. the mini construction site set up with tons of legos. when it finishes in the spring, the discovery center will span 31,000 square feet, there will be a lego pool, classes on master building, and a mini land featuring models of bay area

landmarks. >> very creative. a live look at the sierra, beware if you plan to drive there this weekend. fresh september snow is expected. last weekend of september, the area could see the change in the weather starting tomorrow. this comes after a little dusting of snow fell last week. so finally, finally the feeling of fall is in the air. >> yep, it's here and we're happy. >> skipping fall and going straight to winter. >> i know, especially up there. will it be warm enough to stick or cold enough to stick? >> yes, the thing is that it's a pretty strong cold front and it's pretty cold, so, so far right now our models are still showing a good chance of seeing a decent amount of snow. now it's not going to be crazy amount of accumulation but we'll certainly get some snowflakes down through the lower elevations so we'll get some snow at about 5,000 feet, anywhere from three to six inches high in elevation but it's the windy gusty conditions starting tonight and then of course the rain, the cold rain, and the cold temperatures and

the snow expected to really kind of make its impact through tomorrow evening. so even though it's not going to be a crazy amount of snow, any time that we get, any sort of snowfall or changes in the weather, you always want to check the road conditions. a wind advisory is in effect already because of the gusty winds so check the roads before you head out the door to lake tahoe this weekend. your microclimate here is bringing it back home, we will be a lot cooler and that's all thanks to that system, keeping our temperatures in the 70s. look at san francisco, 67 degrees. oakland 70 degrees, and our overlook right now could see a little bit of drizzle as we head towards the mid morning. mike? >> all right, vianey, looking over here, folks have been working all night and we typically see this at this time of morning, the crews flashing lights and temporary brakes north 101 from willow up to marsh and vice versa, the same area coming toward our camera. we see nothing dramatic on the live look or the speed sensors but over the next 40 minutes there will continue to be traffic breaks and cones cleared from the roadway as well. bayfront expressway on to marsh

like wall street right now, if you're long. good morning. i'm bertha coombs at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street set to open higher this morning. the markets falling yesterday as investors dealt with developments on the u.s./china trade front and the implications of the whistle-blower complaint against president trump. the dow on pace for its second straight negative week but also the third positive month out of the last four. today we'll be watching for reports on durable goods sales, personal income and consumer sentiment. due up in about 15 minutes. doordash says it had a data breach affecting nearly 5 million customers, restaurants and delivery workers. the food delivery app says names, email addresses, order histories, phone numbers and stored passwords could all have been accessed by hackers, some financial information was also exposed such as last four digits of payment cards but not the full number or security codes. doordash says the breach occurred in may but it didn't discover it until earlier this

month. it primarily targeted people who signed up on or before april 5th of last year. amazon alexia users can ask that recording of their voice commands be deleted automatically. amazon says it saves those commands to improve the service but the practice raised privacy concerns. amazon and other companies use humans to review those recordings. previously you had to go into alexia's settings and delete recordings manually. now you can ask to automatically delete them after three or 18 months but you still have to opt in, they are kept indefinitely by default. you still have to take that extra step to say you don't want them kept. back over to you. >> bertha, thank you. uber eats is helping people with food allergies. the app is introducing a new feature aimed at making it easier for customers to order. user also filter and find restaurants allergy friendly and

some of it may not make it to the ground. you probably won't notice ta long the coast. it could be enough you get a little bit of coating on your car and window. afternoon clearing and breezy mild temperatures all through the afternoon, remain clear. as you start out your morning on saturday, it will be very clear and later into the evening in sunday thanks to the cold front we'll notice an increase in cloud cover. let's go over your microclimate highs for today. comfortable 70 degrees in oakland, 75 in palo alto. san jose 76. look at san francisco 67, that's a little bit more san francisco like especially for those who have had to experience that 94 and 96 earlier this week. feeling like fall and winter, cooling temps and breezy. by sunday the cold front will bring a chance of seeing rain for far sonoma and far napa counties. also the sierra, we've been monitoring for the last couple of days because we're talking about sierra snow. looking ahead, as we head toward monday and wednesday we'll get a cool start, it will be a little

breezy and we'll get a slight warmup by wednesday, so we're not going to warm up into the 90s but we'll certainly warm up into some low 80s. now let's talk about the sierra snow, because that cold front is so cold it's expected to bring a good amount of snow for the higher elevations of your 5,000 feet and could mean snowflakes for the lower elevation. check the road conditions, also seeing some rain. a look at the next seven days, san francisco getting a lot cooler this weekend, so is inland areas. look at 68 by sunday. mike? >> man, that looks great. very different than earlier this week. looking great as well, speed sensors no problems peninsula, south bay and tri-valley a little bit of slowing out of the altamont for westbound 580. vasco marsh creek to 580 green. you are bea 20 minutes, allow 25 just in case more folks join you and probably will leaving brentwood, discovery bay headed down through basically the only way down to 580.

welcome back. it's 5:24 right now. new this morning, iran's marine and port authority is saying a british flagged oil tanker has left the country. the statement comes just two hours after a ship tracking website showed the tanker began transmitting its location for the first time in weeks. iran seized the tanker in july. the seizure came just weeks after authorities in gibraltar took control of an iranian oil tanker. dr. jill biden is back in the bay area raising funds for her husband's presidential campaign.

dr. biden will attend four events today and tomorrow. the first is in loss altos. tonight she'll be in san francisco. tomorrow she'll meet with voters in sonoma and fremont. meanwhile kamala harris is getting set to open a presidential campaign office in her hometown of oakland. it opens this weekend. talk about a disturbing surprise, a pickup truck left a massive hole in a texas home after crashing through it. this is some of the damage left behind, after yesterday's crash outside of houston. authorities say the truck was traveling on the road behind the home when the driver lost control. the driver had to be taken to the hospital. no word on his condition. authorities believe speed may have been a factor in the crash. teachers in the fourth largest school district in the nation are set to go on strike. the chicago teachers union made the decision last night. chicago public school officials say that they are offering a 16% raise which would take the average teacher salary to $100,000 a year within the next five years but the union says they need smaller class sizes

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live in that neighborhood. what's going on, bob? >> reporter: this happened at this home behind me, you can see it's dimly lit but there's a home right there on san carlos avenue, not far from where shoreline and middlefield intersect. bun shot was fired at this home around 9:45 last night and one person was transported to the hospital. you can see the plans in the video right there, it's not clear how badly that person was hurt. one bullet did pierce a window in the garage door. we have reached out to the public information officer to the mountain view police department to get more clarification about what happened, and an officer on the scene did tell a photographer they are not looking for a suspect and there is not a threat to the public. reporting live here in mountain view, ready readbob redell, "to bay." >> thank you very much, bob. 5:32 right now. a change of heart for

operators of a south bay pumpkin patch. >> as they prepare to celebrate the season they'll have a kind of, they will have the kind of law enforcement presence they wanted. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live for us in san martin with more. kris? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. the organizers here at yusugi farms pumpkin patch say if you come out to the festival between now and halloween you're going to see uniformed sheriff's deputies rather than private security patrols. if you live in the south bay, you probably have been to this pumpkin patch, it's a popular tradition this time of year, but with the gilroy garlic festival shooting fresh in people's memories, organizers were afraid folks wouldn't feel comfortable being in a large crowd without a proper law enforcement presence. when they asked the sheriff's department for uniformed patrols they'd pay for, the best that the organizers got was car patrols in the area, which was unnerving for park visitors.

>> that would be a concern. we want to feel safe. i don't like to go out anymore because i feel unsafe. >> reporter: one day after nbc bay area broke this story, a turn-around. the organizer tells us the sheriff agreed to let the uniformed officers patrol here, though that is not their the general policy. contra costa county a different policy, this from the brentwood police chief, "while we may not be able to predict or stop someone from attempting to cause harm to visitors and members of our community at a public event, i am committed to providing my officers with the tools they need to better respond should that occur." so in brentwood, when police officers go out to patrol community events like this one or others, they will head out with patrol rifles and also mobile vehicle barriers. to deploy, should the need arise. in san martin, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, kris. happening later this morning, parents in oakland plan to protest outside a school

district headquarters, this is over a decision to close two schools. this is video from earlier this week given to us by a group called save oakland schools. it shows angry parents shutting down a school board meeting upset about the decision made earlier this month to fold four struggling schools into two and also fear this is just the prelude to moreclosures. the announced closures are due to take effect next year. the friday night lights will go dark in san leandro. a scheduled football game between san leandro high school and mcclymonds high school is canceled. police say they're investigating a threat which appears to be related to some conflict outside both school communities. administrators met this week to try to come up with alternative plans. the decision is being met with mixed reaction from parents. >> i think it's a tragedy, let the kids play. all the peripheral stuff handle that on your time. don't affect the kids' ability

to play. >> if there is a safety issue, then maybe they need to kind of see what's happening there. >> san leandro and oakland police departments are investigating the threats and will update the school district with any new information. tonight's game would have been a preseason matchup, so if it can be rescheduled, it won't be played for several weeks, when both schools seasons are done. giants fans, get your handkerchiefs ready. it's sure to an an emotional night at oracle park as manager bruce bochy retires. there's a buzz about vip visits not to mention the dodgers coming to town. yas came through yesterday, mike yastrzemski's homer in the fourth helped lead the giants to an 8-3 win over colorado. >> yep, losing a legend there. >> we are. i remember when bochy manager came to the area and everybody is like botchy or bochy.

unforgettable name and guy. we take an opportunity to salute the skipper in san francisco. in the south bay slowing that starts off our morning a little bit, a friday commute so a lighter volume of traffic with your typical patterns. i want to point out we're still under 20 minutes from marsh creek road down vasco, even where it goes down to one lane, approaching 580, still close to the limit. that's a great drive right there. we look at your travel times toward the bay bridge no delays and we have a smooth drive top number is the east shore freeway down to the bay bridge where the backup is there and also a note, no delays for mass transit but this weekend we have that bus bridge again between orinda and walnut creek for b.a.r.t., doing that track maintenance, reduced the number of closures they have to do but this weekend we'll see b.a.r.t. work between orinda and walnut creek. >> this weekend we'll see cooler temperatures. >> they're not as gusty right now but along the coastline it's

a little breezy. but it will get gusty again, so let's get right to that saturday forecast because we have a cooling trend under way and a cold front is going to impact us headed into sunday. first let's get to your coast, bay and inland temperatures, again we'll start out mostly clear saturday morning, it will be crisp, clear fresh air and a little bit of clouds rolling in through the mid morning, breezy along the coast. look at the temperatures. these are your daytime highs for the most, expected to top out only at about 64 degrees, for the bay 68. inland areas only topping out at 76 degrees so we really are saying farewell to any sort of 80s in terms of temperatures. let's talk about sunday's forecast, because just off to the north, a cold front is going to drop down and it's going to cool us off even more, so right now, sunday is probably going to be our coolest day of the weekend so far. 63 degrees expected for the coast. i hope you took advantage of all the great beach days we had last

new for you this morning, alameda county and san jose can now declare emergencies to build homeless shelters and housing. it's a tool already available to san francisco, oakland, berkeley and santa clara. the governor expanded that law this week, it's one of 13 new bills he signed into law to fast track construction of homeless shelters. one of the laws allows l.a. to bypass certain restrictions to build supportive housing immediately. president trump criticized california leaders over the homeless crisis before his visit to the bay area last week. >> 5:56. a skydiver died in san joaquin county after hitting a big rig on a highway. we have video of the big rig. the chp says a 28-year-old woman was parachuting yesterday over the city of lodi when she drifted on to highway 99. investigators are not sure why she ended up there. there were strong winds reported in the area. the woman was sky diving with
