we're going to start with the latest on this impeachment investigation and here it is, this is the whistleblower complaint against president trump. it's unclassified anybody can read it, and it's alleging that the president put pressure on a foreign leader, namely he wanted an investigation into democratic rival joe biden. it also included a second explosive allegation this time of a coverup that the white house directed any record of that phone call be hidden in a classified computer system where it otherwise did not belong. this all led to the president yesterday unloading during a closed door meeting saying, quote, we are at war we've got it all covered we'll start with nbc white house correspondent, kristen welker, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. this morning, president trump's white house has been increasingly engulfed by the ukraine firestorm. the whistleblower alleging mr. trump abused the powers of his

office and also trying to cover it up. the video surfacing at the president lashing out at a nonpolitical event designed to thank diplomats for their work at the un and even children in attendance. president trump on tape making it clear he wants to know who's behind the growing ukraine controversy raising eyebrows with these comments obtained by bloomberg at a closed door event on thursday. >> you know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart, right, the spies and treason, we used to handle it a little differently than we do now. >> reporter: those remarks sparking a shark rebuke from the chairman of intelligence, and oversight committees, releasing a statement, the president's suggestion is reprehensible invitation to violence against witnesses in our investigation

president trump making the controversial comments during a nonpartisan event speaking to american diplomats and their families including children, taking the opportunity to rally his base. >> we're in a war. these people are sick. they're sick. >> reporter: while going after his democratic rival. >> sleepy joe biden, who's dumb as a rock. >> reporter: while stressing that the whistleblower didn't have any firsthand knowledge of what was alleged in the complaint. >> basically that person never saw the report, never saw the call, and he never saw the call, heard something and decided that he or she, whoever the hell it is, almost like a spy. >> reporter: in their complaint, the whistleblower did write i was not a direct witness to most of the events described and that has many republicans pouncing. >> when i think of whistleblower complaints, i think of somebody who saw something that was wrong and came forward to say so this is hearsay information. >> reporter: and also this

morning, more than 300 national security and foreign policy officials, some from the obama administration, have released a statement calling president trump's actions regarding ukraine a, quote, profound national security concern. so the question is what happens next well, congress was set to go on recess for two weeks, but the house intelligence committee plans to keep working and could hold another hearing as soon as next week. savannah. >> kristen, thank you, and of course all this reaction overnight stemmed from yesterday's historic hearing on capitol hill nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson coveringhat part of the story this morning good morning to you. >> reporter: triggering new questions now today, many of them centered around the whistleblower's allegation that key information was put away in this more secret, more restricted computer server, part of the complaint now consuming congress and the white house a new focus in the impeachment investigation this morning

looking at what some describe as a lockdown cover. >> it's hard to imagine a more serious set of allegations than those contained in the complaint. >> reporter: the whistleblower complaint alleging senior white house officials intervened to lock down all records of the controversial call between president trump and the ukrainian president by storing the transcript in a separate electronic system where the whistleblower said it didn't belong, not the first time something like this happened, according to the complaint with some republicans speaking out about the details of the phone call. >> concerning that conversation, i want to say to the president, this is not okay that conversation is not okay. >> reporter: on capitol hill thursday, democrats seized on acting director of national intelligence joseph maguire's acknowledgment he turned to the white house after the office received the complaint. >> why would you go there to ask their advice what you should do. >> the allegation that is made by the whistleblower is secondhand information, not

7:08 am
>> here to help us break down what's next, nbc who's correspondent, peter alexander and jeremy bash, chief of staff of the cia and the defense department in the obama administration let me start with you, peter, so extraordinary yesterday the president's got sort of a meet and greet with federal employees, diplomats at the un, and then it turns into really this unleashing of vitriol against the whistleblower and the white house who talked to the whistleblower. >> he described them as scum what's striking about this savannah is this was a conversation behind closed doors with dedicated career servants to this country, people who have served with democrats and republicans. >> and their families. >> there were kids in the room at the time. he said we used to treat folks differently, spies, who he effectively accused of treason in a situation like this this was a dramatic moment that pulled back the curtain for a lot of americans the way the president is thinking in this potentially
7:09 am
historic moment. >> let's turn to jeremy bash, you're a subject matter expert in this. you've read the complaint. we have all read it now. and at its heart, in it's simplest form. what is this alleging. >> this is the most serious allegation against an american president in our country's history, the president used his office to press a foreign country to interfere in an american election, he enlisted the justice department to investigate a political rival and white house officials were so alarmed by it that they launched an elaborate coverup. >> there's talk that this implicates national security, why, why would this be a case in which our national security is threatened by the president's conduct on this call which the white house has released that rough transcript of. >> instead of defending an alley, ukraine which is in the fight of its life, the president was holding back that aid until the ukrainians would investigate
7:10 am
the biden >> let's talk about t of hearsay, the president mentioned it before the diplomats at the un saying this is secondhand, lindsey graham, oh, this is hearsay, that may be the case but isn't it now proven by the document that the white house released >> that's right, savannah. that july 25th phone call, which we now have a near transcript of actually is much worse than the whistleblower's complaint. the whistleblower says the president was essing ukraine to investigate his political rival. what the transcript makes clear is he was offering a deal, if you investigate my political rival, i will release that critical military support to you. >> that's so fascinating what jeremy says, peter, because in the end, it may be that the most damming piece of evidence came from the white house itself, its own quasi transcript of this call what was the decision making behind releasing that? >> let's be clear, the president
7:11 am
was being told by two of his top aides, steven mnuchin, mike pompeo, the secretary of state, this is not a good idea, this is a bad precedent, other white house officials said they didn't think it would have a good precedent going forward. it shows how caught offguard the president was, he thought he did nothing wrong. the fact that the president himself said here you go, here is that call could be the most consequential element of this entire moment. >> in fairness to the president, it was an exceedingly transparent thing to do to release this call that otherwise probably congress wouldn't be able to get its hands on. >> republicans have said, we heard from mike turner yesterday, i have some criticisms with the way this went down but mr. president, he said that looking into this camera, this is not okay this call is not okay. >> let me ask you about the other piece of the complaint that came out, the allegation that the whistleblower makes is the record of this call which
7:12 am
would have ordinarily been in one computer system, not classified, was then essentially stashed in a classified computer system so people wouldn't see it how concerning is that if true, and secondly, how could congress get to the bottom of that, how do you unpack that, this is a classified system. >> congressional records are fashioning document requests, to get access to those documents they're going to try to bring before the congressional committees, white house officials who are responsible for doing this, and essentially what it was, savannah, they took a document that wasn't very classified, classified at a very low level, which would have been disseminated to many people and put in a highly secret network so no one else could see it. they didn't want this document to see the light of day. >> thank you, we'll send it to hoda and craig. new developments on the college admissions scandal. >> another parent has been sentenced to prison time after pleading guilty to fraud, and this sentence is of particular
