with love, california. good morning to you. we're following breaking news so early this morning. all lanes of northbound 101 are now shut down after a deadly crash involving a taxi and a wrongway driver. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. straight to that breaking news. we have team coverage with mike inouye watching the traffic. we begin with "today in the bay" live there with the latest. pete? >> reporter: we're just getting an update from chp about this deadly crash. i want to step out of the scene and show you what we're looking at. chp is on the scene of what is said to be a wrongway driver. we're told that just after

midnight a female driver driving alone in a volkswagen drove the wrongway on northbound 101. we're told she hit a taxi with a driver and two passengers. that taxi was a ford escape. in as a result of this crash. one passenger in the taxi was ejected from the taxi. the taxi driver was in his late 50s or 60s. no updates on the ages of the other three people who died in the crash. we are being told there was luggage on the freeway. we're not sure exactly where these folks were coming from. the one and two lanes of the 101 north will be reopened in the next 45 minutes. that's what chp tells us. you have traffic over to the

right being diverted, our cars are diverted to the third street exit. a messy scene following this the overcrossing on pete's shot is the third street overcrossing. the four people who died in the crash, the coroner looked like it was on scene for the investigation. the folks getting off will get over to the bay shore area. there are a lot of surface streets but no great direct routes. bay shore boulevard up and you can get back on at silver. chp is just saying if you're coming into the area, approach san francisco from 280 and you'll stay clear of this activity. it is shy of the interchange. 380 is your option to take it over and get over to 280. we're tracking deadly crash in san francisco.

you'll be forced off the freeway so, again, try 280 if you can. we'll track that. the rest of the day is clear. >> thank you, mike. right now we want to get a look at what we can expect with the weather. off to a cold start. kari hall has been tracking that for us. it has been cold but not as cold as the past few mornings. in san jose we're going to have lower 50s. that compared to about 45 where we started yesterday morning. going through the rest of the day we will have a lot of sunshine, breezy winds and our afternoon temperatures reaching into the low 70s. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead with a hot weekend coming up in just a few minutes. gilroy high school is shutting down varsity football for the rest of the season after the recent arrest of a teammate. >> the story broke on monday. really what led to the season

being scrapped. >> reporter: the lights are on but there was no varsity practice after school. >> we're really bummed out about it. >> it feels like we've been robbed of the opportunity of winning. >> reporter: during last night's weekend matchup in salinas, the four suspects and the victim were not on the field. ten more students walked off the team after they were formally arrested tuesday. according to a statement by the gilroy unified school district that's what prompted the end of the varsity football program. the district has learned that most of the varsity players have chosen not to finish the season and, therefore, at this time the season will not continue. according to the gilroy police department, the teammate assaulted is not injured but the four alleged attackers are facing sexual battery charges. >> they put their hands on the victim and there was force used. that's why we charged the

felony. >> with the game now canceled, there's some disappointment among those players as well but their coach is making sure they keep the situation in perspective. >> it's tough for us. i have to say you have to think about the victim, too, first and foremost the victim in all of this. >> the decision to cancel the varsity program this year does not include junior varsity so they will continue for the rest of their season. to a live look at capitol hill where a key figure in the impeachment inquiry is set to testify in just a few hours. this follows a day where president trump held little back in slamming the impeachment probe. nonmanufacturing sector plus earningspepsico which just came in. uber launched an app called uber works top workers with businesses looking to plug gaps. it will show workers available jobs and help companies who struggle with missed shifts and high turnover. users can get detailed information including pay, location, skills and work attire. uber says the app will enable time tracking, allowing people to log their break. nearly half of americans enrolled in airline and hotel rewards programs have let their miles or points expire. millennials are the most likely to lose rewards. almost 60% forfeited hotel points, 50% airline miles, and 44% credit card rewards. bank rate says those points and

it is going to make for a very difficult commute this morning, mike, tracking that part of the story. that's a tragedy. wrongway driver report. one of the factors involved, a big deal is four people have been lost. my gosh. let's stick to the traffic right now. pete is following that story. we'll take you out there once again and show you what is going on getting into san francisco. the overcrossing you see at the top of the screen, and this is a tragic scene, they have a lot of damage and debris going on there. over off to the right you see one of the barriers holding up the third avenue over crossing. it says paul avenue. it seems confusing. those two vehicles involved in a head-on crash. you'll see where the closure is coming into san francisco. the exit is marked paul avenue.

the overcrossing is third. there are a number of surface streets but none takes you directly back on 101. it gets wiggly through the area and there is an overcrossing. 280 is the best way to avoid north 101. you have plenty of time to cross over at 380 from 101. avoid that stretch, that last stretch before the interchange. pete told us they're hoping to have a couple lanes open by 5:30. if that is one you're heading into, you may be in luck. now the rest of the bay affecti for 680. the cash lanes backed up but the lanes ready to open in the next

few minutes. a busy start. t' breezy winds. as we head out the door it's not as cool as yesterday but still pretty chilly. river more now at 49 degrees and a look at the lower 40s. as you get ready to head out, low 50s and will drop down to 48 degrees at sun rise. let's take a look at our high temperatures starting in the south bay. morgan hill reaching 80 degrees and 75 in downtown san jose. mostly upper 70s today and it will be just a touch cooler than we've seen recently as the cold front moves across the region it will increase our winds today and we'll see highs in redwood 74 degrees. san francisco up to 65 on the

embarcadero. for the north bay, mid-70s in santa rosa, napa and sonoma reaching 73 degrees. as you dress because of the cool start you do need some of the winter gear like a hat and jacket. later on it will be comfortable. you'll be enjoying the day outside with some short sleeves and maybe some pants that will keep you comfortable today. we'll see this front move through, more winds at times today and then high pressure quickly builds and starts our warming trend going into the weekend. it will stay with us with some warmer temperatures even going into early next week. 70s today inland. mid-60s to the upper 70s by the end of the weekend. another look at the forecast coming up. >> thank you, kari. happening today what may be the most anticipated movie

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live. what kind of measures are we talking about? >> reporter: we're talking about the amc movie theater chain has a location b. they've banned masksce the screening of another batman-related film during which there was a match in aurora, colorado, several years ago. amc is reaffirming that ban, reminding customers it's okay to wear costumes but no face paint, no masks, nothing that conceals the face. another theater chain, the landmark, which has locations

here in the bay area, has just announced it will be banning masks as well as costumes. the u.s. army has warned of a, quote, potential threat, first in an internal email. they say they are not aware of a specific credibl police are making their presence known. we know law enforcement in chicago plan to do the same. inpif what the army put out, no specific threat, only concern. movie theater during the screening of "the dark knight rises." 12 people were killed, many more injured. now the director of "the joker" is asking people not to prejudge

his film saying it's about, quoting here, lack of love, childhood drama, lack of compassion in the world and, quote, he thinks people can handle that message. reporting live in emeryville, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. coming up on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: some drivers told us their head rest posed a danger. now federal investigators are paying attention. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next. first, happening now, be students in hong kong are protesting to demand police accountability after an officer shot a teenaged demonstrator earlier this week. huge pro-democracy demonstrations have triggered clashes with riot police. this week's shooting was the first time a protester is known to have been hit by gunfire. the police chief defended the officer's use of force as reasonable and lawful.
