breaking news to start off your thursday morning. if you plan to use parts of 101 to get into downtown san francisco you're going to have to reroute. several lanes are still shut down north of the third street overpass, the paul avenue exit, and that's because of a deadly crash. >> four people were killed in the crash. this is after a car went the wrong way hitting a taxi. we have team coverage. mike inouye is going to tell us how we can get around all of this. but we begin with "today in the bay's" pete suratos live at the scene with the latest. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. we moved under the third street overpass. you can get a closer look at this wrongway crash. you see the damage withhe two vehicles right behind me as investigators are on the scene.

here is the information we were told by chp before our last live report. they tell us just after midnight a female driving alone in a volkswagen, one of those cars we just showe you, drove the wrong way on northbound 101 near the third street overpass. now they say that she hit a taxi that was carrying a driver and two passengers in it. all four individuals have died as a result of this deadly wrongway crash on northbound 101 in san francisco. we know that one passenger in the taxi was apparently ejected from the taxi when this crash took place. chp is investigating right now exactly why this driver was going the wrongway on the freeway causing this deadly crash, but we do know there was some luggage on the freeway from the taxi. it's unclear exactly where they were heading to as we take you back out here live to the situation, the deadly wrongway accident in san francisco.

we see the one and two lanes are reopening. when it does -- actually, since it is reopening they're going to close off the paul avenue exit. back to mike in the studio to talk about the overall traffic impact. thanks for that update. pete did show you two lanes are open. in between is the crash be scene. that's why they're closing off the exit right here where pete was showing you. folks will no longer be able to exit here. you see the change in the traffic flow. a better flow northbound but you still have jammed up coming into the area. northbound 101 at paul avenue you can no longer exit there. two lanes to the 280 interchange. 280 itself is a much better way to get in. we have one more issue off the bay bridge. for now you have the forecast. into palo alto, a live look outside as we start off with

post" reports vice president nce was involved. >> it seems president trump has engaged him quite centrally in this series of facts. >> reporter: overnight the vice president's office called the story a grand conspiracy from disgruntled former employees. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. developing this morning san francisco's mayor calling it a political attack straight from the white house. a notice of violation from the environmental protection agency tied to sewage spills the agency says violates the can water act. a reading between the line here, a lot of folks say it is a coordinated response to issues the president brought up during his visit to san francisco last month. as he put it san francisco allowing needles to go into the ocean. the mayor says they are full of inaccuracy. the environmental group says san francisco's far more committed to improving such issues compared to most bay area cities. >> these are issues we've known about for a long time.

the city of san francisco has been working on them and investing millions of dollars in upgrading its infrastructure. >> baykeeper points out the epa's sudden interest is suspicious given it's now rolling back protections. attorneys have filed a freedom of information act request to obtain the epa records tied to this notice and to learn just who is behind it being sent. san jose police announced a major break with a shooting in august. officers arrest this had man of san jose. he's now facing murder charges in connection to a deadly shooting on story road. the victim, sandoval. police are not saying if they know a motive or what led up to the shooting. authorities on the peninsula are searching for a man they say threatened cal transworkers with a knife and an ax.

investigators say workers were cleaning up trash. the man left the scene, running into an empty field. police say they encountered a man. he was tased. governor newsom signed a bill to establish a network of fire detection cameras. other bills encourage communities to adopt new standards aimed at making homes more fire resistant. the deadly campfire in butte county. with so many cool temperatures we've been experiencing that -- does that lighten the risk? >> there will be a high fire danger coming along with the hot

in to san francisco just shy of the 280 interchange. you see the cars passing by because in the last few minutes they have reopened two lanes. that's less than hatch the freeway. it is causing a jam coming into san francisco. also with paul avenue exit closed you're forced once you pass into the area to go past that slow scene. 280 coming into san francisco is your better bet. most folks coming up the peninsula are able to make the choice. your commute at fremont, the first exit. that is a big disdistraction. the rest of the bay, although there are minor incidents, the traffic speed sensors are moving nicely. >> thank you very much, mike. up next, a car stolen in the east bay with a baby inside. the child was discovered safe a few blocks away.

wall street is looking to open lower. dow futures off by 42 points right now. stocks sold off on continued worries about the u.s. and global economies following weak u.s. manufacturing data tuesday. the dow, the nasdaq, the s&p 500 off to one of the worst starts to a quarter since the financial crisis. today we're looking for a key report on the health of the nation's nonmanufacturing or services sector as well as unemployment, factory orders, plus we did get earnings from pepsico this morning. uber launched an app called uber works to connect temp workers with businesses looking to plug staffing gaps. the app is only available in chicago for now. it shows workers available jobs and helps companies who struggle with missed shifts and high turnover. users can get detailed information including pay, location skills, and work attire. the app will enable time tracking. many people clock in and out and log their breaks. nearly half of americans

enrolled in airline and hotel rewards programs have let their points or miles expire. a new survey out from bank rate shows millennials are the most likely generation to lose rewards. almost 60% have forfeited hotel ints, 50% airline miles and 44% credit card rewards. bank rate says those points and miles have value just like money. it's easy to extend the expiration if you show some account activity that could include donating points or miles to charity. >> if you don't know what to do with them, donate them. >> millennials are activists and very generous. thank you. 5:15:. you want to go far, far away, perhaps halfway around the world. launching new nonstop flights to rome from sfo starting next year.

we're looking at two lanes northbound getting into san francisco right now. as people drive up from candlestick, slow to paul avenue. that exit is closed so they can keep that side of the freeway clear for the investigation. you see the slowing starting to build right now. i don't know when they're going to clear the lanes. if they're able to clear them in the next 45 minutes before 6:00 we should be okay for san francisco. and right now 280 is an easier alternate. other issue we have right here getting into the city is at the bay bridge crossing westbound 80. a disabled car and there's a backup at the bay bridge toll plaza and here at the turn getting into treasure island. i believe the metering lights were turned on early. now you see on the bottom of the screen a lighter flow getting towards treasure island indicating folks being held up in oakland. that may be an early start for

those folks but the maze is not a problem. kari, we're showing the rest of the map, anything outside the entrance to san francisco is clear. >> as we head outside in walnut creek this morning looking good. another chilly morning with some upper 40s. a look at our temperature trend. we'll be at 52 degrees at 6:00. dropping down to 51 around sun rise and then we'll be at 63 at 10:00 if you're making plans to be out later today it is going to be so comfortable. as we get out the door in san jose, grab a heavier jacket. we're going to start out with some low 50s and then that will lead into another beautiful day. we'll be at 69 degrees at lunch time. a look at our highs reaching up to about 75 degrees. that's a few degrees cooler than normal and in morgan hill we're going to see a high of 80 degrees. there will be a weak cold front moving through. we'll be breezy at times. temperatures in the upper 70s for pleasanton and mid-60s for half moon bay. san mateo reaches 72 degrees.

san francisco staying in the 60s with some gusty westerly winds and the north bay reaching 76 in santa rosa. napa today reaching 73 degrees. here is what's going on. there is a storm system just to our north and it's pushing down cooler air into the bay area. but it will be dry. high pressure edges its way in tomorrow. we start the warming trend but it won't really get hot until about saturday and sunday. but with the clockwise wind flow around the high pressure we'll see more of an offshore wind and that will decrease the humidity and, unfortunately, increase our fire danger. we'll be watching out for that early next week as our temperatures spike on sunday as well as monday reaching the upper 80s and low 90s in the valleys. and our cooldown doesn't happen that quickly. we are going to have to settle in with hot weather and enjoy today because it will still be cool. mid-60s in san francisco.

no time for basketball. pool. carnival. choose fun. a 6-month-old baby is back with her mother after police say she was taken during a carjacking. it happened in emeryville when a woman left her car running with her baby in the back seat as she went into a taco bell. that's when a man stole the car with the baby inside. officers say the thief left the baby on the sidewalk just a few blocks away and then, while the mother was calling 911, a good

samaritan saw the baby on the sidewalk. the mother is not facing charges. police are still looking for the thief and that stolen car. two walnut creek mail thieves will spend two years in prison. the defendants drove from the city to the beacon apartments in san francisco. that's where they broke into mailboxes and stole people's identities. the defendant hit the same apartment complex more than a dozen times and more than $40,000. felix was sentenced to 28 months in prison yesterday. tyler goforth received a similar punishment in august. the sentencing for a former dallas police officer convicted of murder ended with some forgiveness. the brother of the man amber guyger shot and killed said he forgives her and asked the judge if he could give her a hug. >> i don't know if this is possible but can i give her a hug, please? >> last year guyger shot botham

jean in his apartment. she said she thought he was in her apartment. she wa sentenced to ten years. outside a different scene. in the streets of dallas people were less forgiving. they marched to say it s just too short for a convicted murderer. she could have gotten up to 99 years for killing jean. a man accused of shooting people inside a southern california synagogue is due to appear in court. john earnest is scheduled for a preliminary hearing, accused of shooting a woman and injuring three people inside the chabad synagogue and is accused of setting a fire to a nearby mosque. he pleaded not guilty to all charges. the lights are out this morning on placido domingo's career. the opera singer resigned yesterday in the wake of sexual

harassment allegations by as many as 20 women. in august the san francisco opera canceled a scheduled performance when they came to light. a statement, he will continue to clear his name but says it was in the best interests of l.a. opera for him to resign. he says he has withdrawn from all future scheduled performances. if anyone could ever be saved by drugs, this is probably how it happens. >> three suspected drug smugglers were rescued off colombia's coast. they were found by colombia's army while in the water using cocaine packs as floaties. take a look there. according to officials the boat sank forcing the crew to use their cargo to keep them afloat. authorities report more than one ton of cocaine was seized along with the trio who now face drug-related charges. wow. up next, back to the

volkswagen drove the wrongway on northbound 101 right here near the third street overpass. they say she hit a taxi with a male driver in his 60s who was carrying two passengers, a male and a female. all four individuals involved in this have died as a result of the crash. now the male passenger in the taxi, we're told, was ejected from the taxi. chp is investigating exactly why this driver was going the wrongway. we're told there appears to be some luggage on the freeway. unclear exactly where these passengers may have been heading to. now back out here live to the scene, the freeway lanes, the one and two lanes on 101 north have reopened, that paul avenue exit is closed. you can see behind me there's no estimated time as far as when the lanes were reopened but we'll send you back to mike who will talk about the overall traffic impact in the area. >> we'll take it from here,

discomfort in his est. doctors found blockage in one of his arteries. sanders turned 78 last month and his age has been a frequent issue on the campaign trail. doctors say it's not unusual for people in their 70s and 80s to have a stent installed. service workers plan to be back on the picket line in the second day of their strike. >> we are the union. >> we are the union. >> social workers, nurses, and even public defenders are supporting the union walking the lines yesterday. workers have been without a contract for three months and talks are at an impasse. the county says the strike so far is not having a major impact on certain advices partly because right now this is a rolling strike for the entire 12,000 union not on strike all at the same time. the football season is over this morning for the gilroy high school varsity football team. police arrested four players

been banning masks ever since the aurora, colorado, shooting involving a batman film with joker. amc is, again, reaffirming the ban, telling customers that costumes are okay but no masks, no face paint, nothing that can conceal the face. it was announced they'll be banning masks as well as costumes. the joker movie is about batman's nemesis, his mental breakdown, the u.s. army did initially warn of a potential threat surrounding this movie's release. then appeared to back off that reporting. still, police in some cities are making their presence known at the screening. that was a scene last night in new york city. we know law enforcement in los angeles and colorado plan to do the same. some cities will be sending

a little less than three hours from now at 8:00 in san francisco the usps is holding a holiday hiring event. it's happening at the processing facility at 1300 evans avenue between bayview. postal service plans to hire some 30,000 holiday workers nationwide. one of the biggest names in hip-hop is embracing male art and hopes more men. >> asap rocky showed off his manicure telling vogue, quote, i feel like men should be able to do nail art without feeling feminine. asap rocky is already a model for calvin klein and prada and a big-time rap artist. >> i'm kind of embarrassed. >> mike started that. >> my one black nail.

unfortunately, guys, we have to deal with extra slowing getting into san francisco, a tragedy actually. let's take a look at the live pictures we have. the investigation where pete suratos continues to show these closures, three out of your five lanes getting into san francisco. you see the folks putting away some equipment, taking off some of the gloves. part ofhe investigation now clearing up. that taxi, the yellow vehicle off the roadway and the volkswagen there, the one behind the chp officer, were invold in a head-on crash. a deadly one involving four people who died. we now have the cleanup and the clearup that continues after the investigation. looks like they're wrapping up. sky ranger is over the scene as well. we have two lanes of northbound 101 open but clearly not enough to take the capacity that it's now building coming into the city. this is northbound. the last exit is third street. these folks exiting. after third street as we get out

to the map we'll see there's paul avenue. that exit is closed. you cannot take that exit because that's right where the crash is located just at the exit and so that's the reason for the big backup, again, growing to a mile and a half, maybe two soon. now this is surface street traffic moving nicely. the freeways make it easier to see, moving except for the one stretch. 280 getting past the scene from the peninsula. the bay bridge toll plaza has your backup and everything else is relatively standard and light. pete suratos will bring us an update. we still have two lanes of north 101 blocked. kari? right now it's 5:51. let's get out the door and take a look out in oakland. if you're about to head to fruitvale b.a.r.t. station expect upper 40s and low 50s. we will have another beautiful day as we enjoy a taste of fall. as you can see soon we'll be heading back to summer.

take it in. make some plans to get outside today as we reach into the mid-70s in east san jose. gilroy will reach 81 degrees. for the east bay mostly some 70s here and slighter cooler. danville reaching 76 degrees. mid-70s for the peninsula and in san francisco upper 60s, the north bay into the mid-70s. a live look outside as you get dressed this morning, you do need to still break out the winter gear with a hat and a jacket. later on today it will feel more like fall so short sleeves and pants will keep you comfortable. let's talk about what's going on as we go into the next several days. a cold front dipping in will bring us gusty winds at times today. then tomorrow we start to see our temperatures heading back up. it will be hot for the week. as that moves right overhead our winds turn offshore and it will be very dry along with a high fire danger, we'll have hot temperatures with highs reaching into the mid to upper 80s even
