mike t looks like you spotted something in richmond. >> i did, but now it's past tense, spotted. two chp vehicles just left, kari, as we were listening to simone biles get the second move named after her earlier on today. a smooth drive the richmond to san rafael bridge. however, there is construction crew before that span, you'll probably see some folks there, a little slowing past the toll plaza. no problem out of contra costa county, pittsburg, bay point and vasco and 580. 580 may be lighter because there's a big crash coming off of i-5, that is an issue for folks coming in to tracy. all of our viewers moving fine on these sensors. >> thank you, mike. in contra costa county, developers in the east bay hope to put a dent in the housinggro today. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is outside walnut creek b.a.r.t. this morning. talk about why this move is so important. >> reporter: laura and marcus, the walnut creek transit village

is what we're talking about, significant for a couple of reasons. one, this has been several years in the planning in the making and two, once it's complete it will bring hundreds of new apartments online. developer also break ground on this construction complex located on this parcel of land behind me. we put this map on your tv screen so you can get a better lay of the land. the apartments should be located just north of the walnut creek b.a.r.t. train station in what used to be a parking lot for b.a.r.t. riders. this will give you a sense of what the development looks like. when complete the walnut creek transit village will cover 16 acres, will have almost 600 apartments and 26,000 feet of retail space. the developer says it will be one of the largest transit developments of its kind in the bay area. construction will take place in two phases. phase one is the ground-breaking for later phase should be finished by 2022 and in the remainder of the

apartments for phase two, that >> thanks for the latest, bob. this morning, power sup and running for pg&e customers in butte, plumas and yuba counties. pg&e warned people over the weekend their power could be shut off because of high fire dangers. about 12,000 customers didn't have power when they woke up yesterday morning but power was restored to everyone just before 4:00 p.m. yesterday. firefighters spent the night mopping up hot spots after a wildfire burned dangerously close to homes in napa county. cal fire says it burned about 500 acres in american canyon. people living in the area had to evacuate, and for a time, some feared the worst. >> the napa fires, that was scary and last year with the paradise fire brought back a lot of bad memories, so it's scary to have it so close tong contained, which is nice. >> firefighters lifted the

evacuations at about 7:00 p.m., ck34 right now. happening today, governor newsom wants to invest billions of dollars in california schools. the governor is signing a bill to put the largest school construction bond in the state's history on the march 2020 ballot. ab-48 would raise $15 billion for preschool, k-12 and higher education construction. the bond needs just a simple majority of voters to say yes to pass it. stanford university is making a very visible name change. the main pedestrian and bicycle mall in front of the stanford campus is being renamed jane stanford way. the old name sarah mall was scrapped because of its mesa, f acamera, he founded the system in the 18th century and seen as a controversial figure by many. jane stanford is the university's co-founder. her vision played a central role in the university's early years. the name change goes into effect

tomorrow. oakland leaders getting the message after major league baseball leadership threatened the's could follow with a move to vegas. the coliseum sale would happen as part of the new stadium deal. "the chronicle" reports baseball's commissioner suggested if the city doesn't drop the suit the a's m l vegas. oakland leaders took that threat to heart and certain the issues will be resolved. >> don't go, don't go. here on "today in the bay," looks of gm workers will continue to strike, causing the company to lose $80 million a day. the big snag over the weekend that has put doubt over a quick settlement. plus, snack bars are becoming a big business but not for big brands. why so many people are turn iin to small things but moving away from big brand companies. taking a look out at the bay

good morning. i'm contessa brewer at cnbc headquarters. here are todays atop business headlines. wall street is set to open in the red, dow futures off by 60 points. stocks rallied friday after the jobs report showed the economy added fewer than expected jobs last month but the unemployment rate fell to a 50-year low.

still the markets were down for the third straight week overall, and trade is in focus now as the latest round of u.s./china talks are scheduled for later this week. reportedly china is reluctant to agree to a broad trade deal. the uaw strike at general motors is entering its fourth week. it does not appear it will be resolved any time soon. a top uaw official says talks have hit a snag over gm's commitment to make certain products at u.s. factories. gm's plants have been shut down since the strike started september 16 analysts say the company is losing more than $80 million a day while workers are getting just a fraction of their normal pay, while they're on strike. americans are eating more snack bars, but the big brands are getting left on the shelves. sales have been falling for general mills nature valley bars and kellogg's special k bars, while snack bar sales are rising. consumers are opting for items higher in protein, lower in

dogs last thursday, this happened outside of houston. the lightning strike knocked him forward to the ground. it also reportedly blew his shoes and socks off. video shows bystanders rushed to his aid. they gave him cpr and now he's alive. he's recovering in a hospital. and we hear deputies later found the dogs, they had run off, probablyfrighten ed. can you imagine living through that and telling the story? >> the dogs took off. >> you can't let go of that leash. that's amazing, though. >> yes. doesn't look like the movies. >> right, just boom. >> wow. lucky. >> any of that, kari? >> no, thank goodness. we're going to have some hot weather today. here is a live look outside in san francisco, as you get ready to head out the door. what we're going to see is some warm temperatures to start in a few spots. look at where we are right now. we're at 83, or 63 i should say

in san francisco. we're heading up to 83 today. we'll see our temperatures starting out at 60 in san jose, also 60 in brentwood. the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. we'll see some of the temperatures starting to heat up. we're up to 88 in antioch today. 87 in napa, and oakland at 83 degrees. we're supposed to be in the upper 70s in the south bay, but we are making it up to 88 degrees. so it is a hot start to the week. heres go through the rest of the week. we'll have some gusty winds picking up especially starting tomorrow as some cool air comes in from the north from this system, and as the winds increase, that storm system just off to our east, we'll see this gradient of winds blowing offshore, it will be really dry and that lin crease our fire danger, even as the temperatures cool through midweek. we'll see a couple of these systems moving through, so even going into the weekend, we will stay windy, and at least mild, but our fire danger will be the main concern, so already we have

a fire weather watch that will be in effect for all of our bay area hills inland, and this will start on wednesday, and continue into thursday. our temperatures will also be coming down, so we're in the upper 80s today. 82 tomorrow, and then some mid-70s on wednesday. i shouldn't say showers, i should say windy and as we go into the weekend we'll see some upper 70s and as we look at san francisco, low 80s today, but we'll bring it back to 70 by tomorrow. mike, you were doing your check in palo alto. >> i am, kari, officially we call them wind showers. up to w. i see brake tapping helded up toward marsh. just that note, the typical note overnight that you may have a few crews out there, much fewer, much less activity as you travel from sunday into monday night. a smooth drive for the speed sensors all around the bay and that is great news. we're going to zoom toward the tri-valley, no major problems

out of the altamont. we have a smooth flow of traffic, lighter than you might find early on a monday morning and coming off marsh creek road down to 580, you're under 20 minutes. right now be careful, folks. it's a clear drive for vasco but you narrow down to one lane and a lot of folks may be headed over there the next 15 minutes. a crash reported eastbound 80 at highway 4, everything is getting off of the roadway smoothly but it is traveling up toward the carquinez bridge, got my eyes on that. richmond to san rafael bridge the overnight crew approved to be there, likely still there and here is the bay bridge, beautiful shot, there are no problems at the toll plaza. a few folks waiting for cash lanes, of course. fastrak gets you here joining up with the incline and over toward the city, beautiful sparkling lights, no problem. we'll send it back to you. >> thanks, mike. we're still trying to connect the dots into what we believe was a police standoff silver creek neighborhood. we know officers were outside of that home for about six hours

onnier baon i yerba buena road. while our cameras were there, no one came out. video shot later showed a man in handcuffs after police used flash-bang devices. police are not confirming if the man in handcuffs is tied to an earlier incident. this morning a teenaged driver is facing serious charges after a deadly crash in sunnyvale. chp responded to reports of a young woman walking, the 17-year-old had been driving a pickup truck and hit a tree. inside the truck was 21-year-old woman from san jose. the teen was arrested on is you released. a over the weekend. a manonng officers used a drone to search that area. one of the suspects spotted hiding in some brush along the highway, an 18-year-old was arrested. officers are still trying to track down the second suspect

and the gun. 4:49 and people in solano county are preparing for wildfires. mary beth dugan took no chances, you can see the burned hills from her property, this comes two years after many in the green valley area evacuated during the atlas fire. the mayor is trying to take more steps to protect her home from wildfires. >> the hillside further to ago. asrepared to do with the trees that are listed as small, to make sure there's no dead debris. >> cal fire spoke yesterday about action plans, social media, contacting families, even setting upsafe c. 4:50. police in san diego are promising refunds and issuing apologies after towing a slew of cars during president trump's recent visit. the president visited there about two weeks ago. ahead of the visit police posted dozens of temporary no parking

literature prizes are thursday and the nobel peace prize is awarded on friday. >> amazing. imagine getting that phone call? >> i know, i got one -- oh, i wasn't supposed to talk about it. >> yes, getting up going to work, sorry. it's 4:54. nbc bay area responds to a san francisco student whose cross-country shipment went missing. >> he asked consumer investigator chris chmura and lled tt the academy of art in san francisco. he paid $156 to grhohe bus line, to ship two suitcases from connecticut to here. inside, personal items including some clothes, plus more than $4,000 worth of cameras and lenses, he said. those bags disappeared. seven weeks after the bus left new haven, there was no sign of them, and marcus says greyhound couldn't tell him where they were, so he turned to us. we asked greyhound to review marcus' lost items claim. it offered marcus $300.
