check out our temperature trend. it's a cool start to the day, upper 40s. it will warm up into the low 70s today. we'll see a few low 80s, as well, for the inland bay. overall, this weather is perfect for this time of year. we'll talk about what else is ahead for the week. >> life was disrupted, schools were disrupted last week for much of the week. we'll see how things are shaping up this morning. we expect to see a little more traffic, but right now very smooth. the road weather index is showing breezy conditions in the nort bay. no problems reported. we have a little build at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> we'll check back with you, mike. this morning several people are hurt after a crash in the busy san francisco intersection. >> now the driver isn police

custody. >> reporter: -- >> we're having trouble hearing you, sharon. your microphone is not working right now. we'll try to figure that out. we'll move on to another crash. authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of a driver who died in a three car crash late saturday night. investigators say speed likely played a role. a car crashed into a pickup truck and then struck a parked car. the passengers in the car and the driver of the truck not hurt. the responding officer killed jefferson after a neighbor called to report the

front door was open. she was baby sitting her 8-year-old nephew. body cam video shows the officer walked to the back of the home. investigators say the officer did not identify himself before firing. an attorney for jefferson's family tells the "today" show the dallas fort worth community is reeling. >> people need to believe that black citizens will be protected. and if you can't expect protection in your home, where can you expect it. >> the latest shooting follows the conviction of former dallas police officer amber guyger. a warning for students at stanford, anyone at a party. investigators say a woman had a date rape drug slipped in her drink. the next day she took a drug test and it came back positive

for ghb. the public safety department says there is no indication the woman was sexually assaulted. >> the school's response to these kinds of things isn't dramatic enough. just because college campuses are deemed safe, they can be far from it. >> officers say the incident was reported to campus security and not directly to the police. last year seven people said they had this happen at a party. several people are hurt after a crash in a busy intersection in san francisco. >> sharon is out there with the very latest. >> reporter: police say definitely drugs and alcohol were involved, but they're still investigating what exactly

caused the several accidents caused by one driver. the accidents happened last night around 8:00. the head on collision left five people injured, one in critical condition. the suspect vehicle ran from one collision, ran a red light at grove which caused the collision with the vehicle. the suspect vehicle continued, careened off the path, and hit a northbound vehicle head on causing the driver to sustain life threatening injuries. the scene is now clear. the victims were taken to several different hospitals here in the city. thanks for the latest there. 4: 4:35. it is columbus day, but not everyone is celebrating. a statue of italian explorer was covered.

existing tariffs do remain. the dow rising for a third straight day and snapping a three-week losing streak. earnings season kicks off tomorrow with results from jp morgan chase and citi group. a new study ranks airlines. evaluates the airlines on factors most important to traveling families whether they offer complimentary seat assignments, early boarding, entertainment and kids meals. lego is exploring whether it could offer a rental service to fans of the plastic building bricks. this is another sign of how traditional business models are changing. lego telling the financial times that it's open to the idea, but it has to come down to whether it's a good value proposition. the company saying the biggest hurdle is whether it can rent a

welcome to monday morning as we take a live look outside. a clear look at downtown san jose this morning. >> we hope you had a wonderful weekend. maybe you're getting a three-day weekend. some people are. >> a feeling of fall in the air. >> it does feel like fall. and it's going to be like this all throughout the week. i guess we get used to having these temperatures in the 40s across parts of the bay area. here's a live look outside in san francisco. you can see a very shallow layer

of fog. that's going to help keep it nice and cool there. we'll clear out fairly quickly. 40 in napa. wouldn't be surprised to see some upper 30s in spots in the north day. san francisco now at 51 degrees. we do see a lot of upper 40s here in concord, oakland as well as livermore. our high temperatures in the south bay reach the upper 70s. we see a high of 76 in san jose. we're reaching low 80s in walnut creek. 73 in red wood city. daly city at 65. san francisco stadium mid 60s for today. mid 70s for napa. as you get ready to head out, we are going to see our weather pattern staying the same over the next few days, more of a westerly wind that will pick up.

look what happens by the middle of the week. a storm system will bring in a slight chance of rain. it does look like it stays well to the north of most of our bay area cities. and then going into the weekend it does stay windy as we see a couple more storm systems passing by the pacific northwest. going into the forecast, no major changes. we're looking at mid 70s today. lower 70s for the rest of the week with breezy winds at times. san francisco mid 60s today. and we'll see more of the same through the rest of the week. >> let's get a look out here. palo alto. the traffic right there. we joke about it, but it's right on schedule. folks know to plan another five minutes just in case they stop traffic. they're clearing the crews overnight where they continue. now they're continuing the

expansion. all the adjustments as we continue to expand the areas. smooth drive on the peninsula. east bay, we'll check back. out of brentwood as you make your way all the way from marsh creek road. no slowing not even from two lanes down to one. great drive over here. things are moving very smoothly and may feel smoother because we talked about it way back over here coming into davis, there is a crash blocking one lane. no major injuries. they had just cleared it. that's where all the traffic is built up. a few small earthquakes shook things up in the south bay. the 2.9 quake hit off highway 101 in morgan hill. there was an after shock.

no injuries, no damage. this week marks 30 years since the largest and most destructive earthquake ever to hit the bay area in modern history. >> it's reach was far more devastating. the quake caused the bay bridge to collapse. it killed dozens of people and injured more than 3,700 others. all this week in all of our newscasts and online, nbc bay area examines what happened back in 1989. >> meteorologist kari hall is here to take a look. >> so this week leading up to the 30-year anniversary we will look at our history and that will help us prepare for the future. on october 17, 1989 a:00, 1989 p.m., we had a section of the

fault that ruptured rattling the bay area for 20 seconds. thousands of after shocks would follow. the first question that many may ask is how did this happen? we go down 11 miles below the surface to demonstrate the actions that led to the deaths of 63 people and cost billions of dollars in damage. the san andreas fault runs roughly 750 miles through california and is where the pacific plate and north american plate meet. these plates are always moving while converging and pressing together. in spots, we see that the san andreas fault presses together and caused the rise of the santa cruz mountains. in certain spots, it kind of gets hung up and that stress builds up. eventually, those rocks areover powered and the force causes it to break. the earth shakes as a result.

and that shaking travels outward causing seismic waves that can be felt all across the bay area in less than a minute. >> the primary cause of damage in earthquakes is the shaking. and the shaking travels through the earth from the epicenter to wherever you are at thousands of miles per hour. and that shaking can cause your structures to vibrate and sway back and forth. and if they aren't built to modern building standards, they can get damaged and hopefully they'll avoid collapse. >> we all know that this earthquake was a powerful force that left the bay area in shambl shambles. tomoow we'll take a closer look at the damage left behind. share your memories. everyone has that vividly in their minds where they were at that time. share it with us, and we may share it, as well, right here on today in the bay. >> i will never forget that day.

happening now, 12 people are dead after a house collapse in a village in north india. officials are investigating whether this morning's collapse was caused by a cooking gas container exploding in the building. building collapses are common in india during the monsoon season when heavy rains weaken the structures. it's 4:52.
