morning. a lot of people on social media, of course, tweeting and talking about the event overnight. >> let's check in with kari this morning. did you feel it? >> i did not feel it myself, but i know a lot of people did. if you were around that area, walnut creek, parts of the east bay, you felt that 4.5 that happened at 10:33 last night. we can see it here on the map and as we open up the view, i wanted to show you that it did happen on the concord green valley fault. we will potentially see more after shocks as we go throughout the morning. the shaking intensity shows that if you were anywhere from the north bay over towards the trivalley and even the peninsula, we did see that people felt that earthquake and, so, we had several aftershocks after e la one was a 2.5. that's the strongest after shock we've seen since as we get out the door this morning, san jose starting out with a few clouds and we do hig yesterday. i'll have more onha

last night. take a look and this is why peo had to evacuate the store. they came flying off the shelves and you can see right here, it's already been cleaned up. but this is the stain left behind from the liquor. now, let's take a look at some pictures and video from right after the earthquake at the safeway. you can see that so many bottles of liquor of i'm hearing honey in the next aisle over. bottles of honey fell over and a lot of different items, detergent, spilled all over the and the store opened at 6:00 this morning. they are stillhi aisles and ovn see, so much to clean up. this is what the earthquake knocked over. dealing with a lot of cleanup here, but, fortunately, no injuries. that is the good news. back to you. >> sharon, thank you. let's check in with kris sanchez in walnut creek right

now talking about what people felt there. kris? >> hi, there, laura and scott. people definitely felt it here in walnut creek. b.a.r.t. shut down the lines or slowed the traffic through the area so they could inspect the lines going through here. folks are starting to arrive here at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station where the ai residual delays, however, it seems like there has been enough time for those to resolve. this is a look at the shake map that show where people report feeling that jolt. some folks felt it on facebook and one viewer felt it down in an san jose. in berkeley a dad says he w pretty happy his kids slept through it. >> pretty brief but startling moment and we checked to make sure everything still asleep. >> did anything fall from your

shelves or any pictures move? >> the pictures went askew. a number of those we had to straighten. just one toy fell from the shelves. nothing really severe. >> all right, so on our way here to the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station we stopped at the contra costa county fire station and we heard reports of damage there. we don't know what kind of damage or how extensive. when we rolled by this morning, everything was quiet and we couldn't see anything from the street. we'll check in with them a little bit later this morning and we'll try to talk to people here at the walnut creek station to see if they heard anything or lost anything off their shelves. in walnut creek, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks, kris. general safety tips to keep in mind during earthquakes. if you're indoors, stay away from windows or light fixtures

episode but no history of mental illness. >> a friend flying out from utah to find her. >> reporter: scott was a close friend of the tech ceo for several years. their businesses were next to each other. at 33 she was very successful and graduated second in her class from georgetown and worked as an investor shortly after college and founded tinkr and oversaw 120 employees in utah and pakistan. paul says her death is troubling. >> supposed to fly back here for a ceremony where she was winnin of the 20 finalists and she would never miss something like that. >> the san jose police say there is no update on the death ation,however, the coroner is expected to perform an autopsy later today. in san jose, ian cull, "today in the bay." we reached out to san jose police but they declined to talk

to us about the original missing person's case or what is now a death investigation. an iconic cable car landed five people in the hospital. a landscaping truck broadsided the cable car near nod hill. people were sitting on the edge of that cable car on that bench yesterday afternoon. they were hit. fortunately, people say all of the injuries appear to be minor. happening today, a final fight for a proposed burger in campbell. they want to build it near hamilton avenue and highway 17. some say it is overdue and others argue the proposed location is already too congested. today will be the last public hearing. the issue will then go in front thismulti-million dollar effor make your morning coffee a little greener. the problem some high-profile companies are encountering and their p future. movies on demand. the new amc service that is set to launch and how it works.

so, let's get you up to speed on the 4.5 magnitude earthquake. centered in pleasant hill. there was some minor damage to report. people certainly felt it across the bay area. this morning we're monitoring very minor aftershock. may not even be able to feel those. a chance of a stronger quake within the next week. we'll keep tabs on all that. always be prepared. i think the power outages, you know, tell a lot of people be prepared. >> a way of life, really, in the bay area. >> get the kids together and let's get you out the door. >> we'll continue covering that

earthquake. 4.3 magnitude and we are looking at the fault that this occurred on. the concord green valley fault and we still have some the bay area. where we see the lig blues, that shows light shaking that was felt in the north bay, as well as the trivalley down to the south bay and even towards the peninsula. but there that earthquake first occurred, you are definitely feeling that, or you did late last night. we had some aftershocks. the strongest one was a 2.5. we haven't had anything over a 2.5. as we look at the intensity scale, it was a moderate on the modified mercalli intemperaturesty shaking scale. that means it was felt by everyone in that area and unstable objects could fall. a look at the intensity look, the intensesty scaity shows how affected people or things. al sharing their stories. she heard

a loud bang and and she opened her eyes and looked around and saw the room shaking violently. we're all sharing those memories on social media. you can do the same. as we look at our forecast for today. a cool start, but leading into a warm day. very much like yesterday. maybe even a few degrees above as we go through the rest of the forecast, some changes ahead. we'll see a storm system moving in from the north that could bring in a slight chance of some showers late wednesday night into thursday. we'll have another behind that moving in for the weekend. that will keep some rain just to our north. going hour by hour, we're looking good today. all clear. tomorrow the clouds start to move in and then by wednesday night, we start to see a quick moving shower. a line of showers moving in from north to south. it looks like it does fall apart, but will bring in some trace amounts of rain, once again, between wednesday night thursday. very light amount. but we will be watching out for that because it could impact your thursday morning commute. the rest of the forecast dry and

our temperatures cooling off into the mid-70s by the end of the week. mike, you've been tracking the roads, how is itgood,he lights turned on just during the metering that last report. that is ten minutes. metering lights have been on for almost ten minutes and a smooth flow on the approach. i'm not exactly sure why and the traffic that folks observed on the cameras down the east shore freeway was enough to trigger that. we'll track that, but the approach and contra costa county all moving towards the area and no major delays and pleasanton and into livermore and a smooth flow along that peninsula and over here typical slowing around towards north flynn and right here where you narrow from two lanes to one, you're closer to 20 minutes now and towards 580. and no delays for these rails. last night, wead trains held

up for capital corridor and martinez bridge and the last train was held for three hours and finally got home in time for the trains to start again this back at 30 years since the loma prieta earthquake. >> left the bay area devastated and killed dozens and destroyed dozens of structures. it was the timing of the urg earthqua earthquake that caused the bay area to see here's meteorologis hall. >> when loma prieta shook the ground on october 17th, 1989, it happened during the giants/a's world series game and during rush hour. it allowed for the earthquake. many saw an ominous ground roll as t . it caused the ground to compress and expand while moving outward. the overall motion is

demonstrated with a slinky. the energy is parallel, while alternating between squeezing and stretching. next comes the secondary wave while taking longer to travel and create a more side to side shaking. then comes the surface waves, which is what causes the most damage to buildings and soft soils liquefy. seismologist keith knudsen explains. >> occurred in the san andres fault and it was damaging because of our urban infrastructure. it shook parts of the bay area much more intensely than we may have anticipated and that intense shaking, especially where around the margins of the bay where there is soft soil, that intense shaking did damage. >> tomorrow i talk about the difference between magnitude and the modified mercalli shaking intensity scale. how we measure damage to structures in an earthquake. >> thank you, kari. now, to a dramatic rescue in the bay.

a fishing boat saves a man floating in turbulent waters. the big question, how end up there? >> we threw him a rope and pulled him up to the side of the boat and reached down and strapped the gentleman inside the boat here. >> reporter: fishing charter boat captain reliving rescue out of the san francisco bay. >> after a day of fishing we're driving and we've seen something red floating in the water, we thought it was a jet ski. >> reporter: it was no jet ski, it was a man face down in the water. >> he was floating away from hi. then once we swung around and picked him up, asked him what is going on and he didn't speak too much english. >> that's because the mystery man in the water is from romania. >> i was working on one of the big boats and fell off. >> reporter: he fell from a cargo ship about a mile away near the port of oakland. >> how long you been enoughwhe barely able to move.

>> hypothermia was kicking in on him, he was super cold. his eyes were starting to droop. nobody on that side of the bay, just the big boat. everybody was watching the blue angels. >> reporter: everyone throwing in their coat to warm him up. >> you can have this one, buddy. take this. i have plenty. >> reporter: the next thing they knew, a small rescue boat with his comrades appeared to get him. >> i'm glad i went fishing yesterday. i'm just glad that there is a umwhoen life out there. even if we never see the guy again, i know we have a friend in romania.d shut down several in san jose. the superintendent says the high cost of living is forcing families to move. so now evergreen will have to close or consolidate two schools by next year. >> i could tell you that i have sticker shock every day from whether it's food, services.

san joy expensive and it's difficult for families to raise their children here. >> the school board will study the numbers, decide which campuses will have to pay the price. the long-term future of walnut creek could come into focus tonight. city council is expected to vote on a 30-year plan aimed at transforming the area. it will increase development near the city's b.a.r.t. station and at homes and offices and attract more jobs among other things. the proposal was put in together in five years of public meetings. no surprise the bay area has a lot of traffic and that puts dangerous bo surprised to learn that san jose is away emissions. since 19 a san jose lowered auto emissions by 13%. in comparison, san francisco emissions grew by 13% and stock had jumped by 56%.

google set to unveil a new phone. the tech giant will hold an event in new york city later to unveil the pixel 4 along with new hardware products. google announced the phone will add a second camera. expected to come in regular and large sizes. a prelaunch video that you're watching there released by google shows the pixel 4 will recognize hand gestures with touch-free swiping. for samsung galaxy users, there is an android 10 im es mode and introduces a screen-time management tool. samsung said in a release that the future aimed to mak the experience nor matchermore natu through the samsung members app. this week we'll talk to wade chambers who has experience advising young tech entrepreneurs who are sometimes a bit too enthusiastic about

house jolted. really abruptly and then we had a couple of little rippling feelings tcking more minor aftershocks overnight following that 4.5 magnitude earthquake in contra costa county. >> striking in pleasant hill and people around the bay and beyond actually reported feeling the ground move. this morning live team coverage. i'm scott mcgrew, marcus i'm laura garcia. day off. the quake is the commute, but first check the forecast with kari. >> another chilly start head out the door. as you make your way out, you may want to make sure you have a heavier jacket. heading out and going to oakland in the upper 40s and see it warm

up nicely as you go throughout the day. highs reaching the upper 70s in the south bay and 83 the high in antioch and concord, as well as with the chance of rain in the forecast. >> big look at the bay, we're looking at a smooth, easy drive. we don't see any of the slowing we expect coming in out of the altamont. typical for west 580 there. little built for highway 4 and across the carquinez bridge. those turned on early at the bay bridge about 510 and the approach all looks smooth and that looks like the volume of traffico t scientific instrument to tell us it was an earthquake but a seismograph in the newsroom and there it is. the physical evidence of the ground shaking last night. >> that is right. it was centered in pleasant hill and that's where we find sharon

kastsuda and there was some damage at a safeway there. >> yeah, that's right, you guys. i live here in the east bay and i definitely felt that. about ten seconds long and awakened me. i was in a deep sleep getting ready for the morning shift and had about five strong jolts and it definitely woke me up. i want to show you what is going on at safeway. they are trying to clean up after this earthquake, still. and this is all of the supplies that they gathered up from the aisles. over here behind me, you can see on the liquor shelf some of the bottles still tossed to the side. luckily those didn't fall over, but the floor is actually stained with some of the alcohol that they had to mop up last night. people here had to evacuate. let's take a look at some of the video of what happened right after the earthquake. so, you can see why people had to evacuate because there were so many bottles that flew off the shelves. that's how strong the jolts were. i'm told that the safeway

employees cleaned it up in ten minutes and reopened the store and were open until about midnight. back here live and they are trying to collect things as i look around, i see soshelves, bg to reopen for 6:00. fortunately, no one here was injured. i'm sharon katsuda. >> thanks so much, sharon. kris sanchez is in walnut creek checking some of the damage there and good morning to you, kris. >> good morning. there were preemptive checks of the rail system. as soon as the earthquake hit, b.a.r.t. slowed the trains here. i'm at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. they slowed the trains so they could do routine inspection of the rail line. delays up to 20 minutes and that should be resolved this morning. we stopped to talk with folks this morning about what they felt and not only did they feel it, but they felt it for a good, long time. here's a look at the shake map

which shows how far out people felt it. as you can see, it was felt pretty far away on facebook. one fewer said he felt it down in san jose not far from san jose maneta airport and i was in the south bay and i slept right through it. we couldn't see much damage from the street when we stopped by the contra costa fire prodekz building and we have gotten report there that might have been damage at fire station one and we couldn't see it readily from the street. when we were there the lights were all out and firefighters sleeping and hopefully nothing too serious there. we are talking with folks this morning and we will bring you that in the next half hour. kris sanchez, "today in the to. general safetyearthquakes. if you're indoors stay away from windows and light fixtures. if you're outside stay clear of

the only options are delivery or pickup. the food delivery app doordash opened a shared kitchen in redwood city. it's to go only and it serves food fromr restaurants. they're all bay area favorites. rooster and rice and the restaurants say this allows them to expand without the expense of opening a new location. customers can order on the door dash app or pick up the phone. >> becoming more and more important. a mini food court. >> there you go. drive right up. let's get a check of your weather on this tuesday nowrn a rattled out of bed last night. i wanted to show what happened just to recap what happened last night. we had a 4.5 magnitude earthquake. it was on the intensity scale of five. and, once again, that was at about 10: 33 last night and happened on the concord green

valley fault. we have seen several aftershocks and we'll watch out for the potential around the area. 2% chance within the next week there could be a stronger earthquake, but we are seeing on our shaking intensity map, it almost felt anywhere from the north bay with some light shaking all the way down to the the peninsula and into san francisco. so, if you are awakened by that last night, once again, it was on the mercalli scale a moderate which is a five and felt by everyone in that area. unstable objects fell, especially what we saw from our live report in a grocery store. as we wake up this morning, here is lek marine layer that fog at about 1,000 feet and below. also a cool start to the day. we're going to take it hour by hour looking at all our microclimates. we go through early afternoon and we start to warm up into the mid-70s in the east bay and some low 70s in the south bay, peninsula temperatures mostly in the 60s. santa rosa will also be in the

upper 60s but heating up by early afternoon and then coming back down later on tonight to some more cold temperatures. tracking the storm system that is moving closer. we can see it on the satellite imagery as it approaches the pacific northwest. that will bring in a chance of rain, but it takes a time, a little bit of time before it gets here. we could see some showers quickly passing bye-bye late tomorrow night into early thursday morning. and then there will be another stormist ism right behind that for the weekend. we'll have to watch out for another chance of some light rain. going hour by hour with a look at how our cloud cover shapes up. we'll see by tomorrow afternoon partly to mostly cloudy skies and the rain approaching late wednesday night into thursday morning. here we are at midnight and going into the north b we've seen some t t fall apart makes it into the rest of the bay area. but there will be the potential of getting some trace amounts of rain. after that, we are looking at some nice fall weather and

getting you up to speed, a 4.5 county in pleasant hill. people across the bay area certainly felt it. this morning, monitor minor aftershocks and you may not even be able to feel them. a 2% chance of a stronger quake within the next week. as we continue talking about last night's quake, this coincides with our look back all this week in 30 years since the loma prieta earthquake that killed 63 people and destroyed thousands of people and left the bay area in inouye was one of t people watching it unfold and he joins us now to talk a little bit more about what he saw. take us back to your version of october 17th '89. >> as you guys know, i grew up in the bay area. my family is here but i am at ucla with an apartment full of bay area residents. we're watching the world series.

here you see some video. a's versus giants. in the world series and we're excited and then the screen goes black. we chuckled. we thought someone would lose their job for pulling the wrong cord and then they come on an h earthqua earthquake. i immediately call my parents and then they answer the phone saying we're fine. and that's a little nun at our house. but they're fine. my mom, my dad, my brother. then we get back to watching tv and we see this. the bay bridge. all of us know the bay bridge from down in l.a. and we are watching to see it had actually fallen apart. the upper deck had fallen to the lower deck and i think it was a live feedha tt we've seen before driving toward and then right down. >> on live television. >> on live television and we're screaming at the tv to stop and we're just helpless. we watch that and with those pictures that came in then we realize there is nothing to laugh about this is a much bigger thing than we thought. >> oh, yeah. it was huge. so interesting to see everything
