within 17 seconds then continues shaking made it to san francisco and oakland collapsing buildings and interstates. gas lines ruptured sparking major fires. and within 29 seconds the seismic waves shook napa spreading northward towards santa rosa and the whole bay area felt the rupp tuture withi seconds. seismologists estimate the rupture traveled about 7,000 miles per hour traveling faster in hard rock and slower in water, but think about that. a rupture travels faster than the speed of sound. my colleague took to social media to ask what questions you still have. she went to a seismologist to get answers. hear what she found out tomorrow. >> coverage continues all day. coming up at 5:00 tonight we'll

6:32 am
every day. he will be greatly missed. i've seen a lot of people from baltimore after i post this had just -- he was well loved and respected in the community. >> i think his civil service began very early. his little boy during the desegregation of the pools in the neighborhood. he was stoned and definitely had a hard time. even back then he stood up for the right thing. >> he did until the very end. he will be missed. on this 30th anniversary of the loma prieta earthquake, a new earthquake system is rolling out that will alert you on your phone. mike inouye just walked through saying i've got it. >> this is something experts have been developing for years. pete suratos on how this all work. is it hard to understand? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and kris. the system is timely considering some of the earthquake we saw earlier this week. here is a sample of what folks
6:33 am
will hear when it comes to this warning system. >> earthquake, drop, hold on. shaking expected. >> reporter: that's a sample. it won't predict the earthquake but could provide people with time to get to safety. seismologists have expanded this network of seismic detectors including some recently installed here in the bay area. the more sensors, the better chance of sending out those important warnings. >> this is best described as a rapid detection system and dissemination of earthquake information. >> reporter: users will be a big part of the system, in fact, when you report where a shake took place that data will be used by researchers. back out here live where

congressman elijah cummings has died. marcus spoke about covering him in baltimore. the "today" show will have full coverage. i didn't want his passing to go unmentioned in this segment. a photograph of cummings taking to the streets in the riots of 2015, bullhorn in hand calling for call. cummings was 68. >> thank you, scott. we are now marking 30 years since the devastating loma prieta earthquake killed dozens of people collapsing dozens of roadways and leaving people with unforgettable stories. >> it was october 17, 1989. if you were here you know exactly where you were when the quake hit. our own laura garcia was attending st. mary's when a day of studying turned into a near brush with chaos. >> i was at st. mary's college and i was actually studying in the library on campus. it had some beautiful big windows and i had a desk in front of it.
6:48 am
it was kind of a coveted spot. i had been studying for hours and a friend same, laura, you've been up here for so long. come with me. i didn't want to leave that spot, i remember because it looked over the campus and was so beautiful. i left my books there to reserve my spot and my backpack. i went with my friend and we stopped at the gas station and that is when it hit. that's when the earthquake hit and to see the windows pop from the gas station and we ran away because we thought the tanks were explode. we went running to the road. you could see the ripple effect of the roadway. and by the time everything settled down, everyone was so frightened of what had just happened. they had to shut the library down because where i had been
6:49 am
sitting a chandelier fell and there was glass all over the place. windows had popped. i wasn't allowed to go back into the library until many hours later and it was quickly just to get my books, get pie backpack. i had to dust off the shattered glass that was everywhere. that was small compared to what other people went through. >> a day many people will never forget. thanks for sharing, laura. a new update on a story we have been following. a world war ii veteran is about to take off for another big adventure. >> i loved meeting jake larson. as we have told you before he's the last surviving member from his unit. he's taking a so-called honor flight to washington, d.c., the organization that helped to see

front moving through. it dried up before a lot of that rain made it into the bay area. we do still have some showers and the low clouds left behind. that may be your view out the window. we had a lot of clouds out ahead of the system. today we'll get more sunshine and this one is movement away fairly quickly as we go into the day tomorrow, more sunshine but then by saturday another storm system moves to our north and could bring in a slight chance of rain for the north bay. high pressure builds, a northerly wind and a summerlike feel as temperatures heat up. look at monday and tuesday. we have low to mid-80s headed
