fire? it's dark out there and can be dangerous. >> yes, we have approximately 10,000 acres have burned with zero percent containment. we've been contending with winds throughout the night. they are dying down a little bit. it was outpacing our firefighters. hopefully the winds will calm down and we'll be able to make some headway in the daylight hours. >> talk a little bit with what you're doing with, the terrain and what you're facing. >> it's a very steep area about ten miles northwest of the town of geyserville up in the mountains so it's very steep, rugged terrain and is the driest. combined with the weather it was

almost 80 degrees and low relative humidity. we saw some critical fire behavior throughout the evening and real rugged, steep area but thankfully it's sparsely populated. we do have evacuations in place. >> that's good to know for people that are not from the area or haven't been that far north from the bay area. down further there are wine rice. what are the threats of any areas, do you know? >> we'll better know in the daylight areas where the fire is heading. there's a casino in the area. it is burning to the south which is toward the town of geyserville. it's still a good ways away from there. it is still there with zero percent containment.

we have a lot of work to do in the next few days for sure. >> how do you determine how you will fight the fire? do you have to wait until daylight or is it just a wait and see? >> firefighters have been doing their best as they can. it has managed to outpace our firefighters with the winds we've faced. i've heard up to 60 miles an hour in some of those areas. we just have to basically try to build a box around that fire using topographical features to build a box around the fire to put our containment lines in and around it. when we get aircraft in the sky at first light, we'll have a much better visual of what we're facing. >> okay, and i would imagine you're getting mutual eight as well on this.

>> amy head with cal fire. haough fight ahead of you. meteorologist kari hall is tracking it for us. relief is not until later in the afternoon. >> even our models for the north bay we're going to have the gusty northeasterly winds that will blow this fire to the west. we are watching the town of geyserville as well as the surrounding areas. i'll have another update on when the winds will subside up next. this is charlie not coughing because he took delsym 12-hour.

welcome back. we join you early this morning for "today in the bay" because we are covering this, the kinkade fire. not too far from the city of geyserville. evacuations are in place as this fire has exploded overnight. dry, hotonditions and lots of winds in the area. now it is at 10,000 acres and it has zero percent containment. we have crews on the ground now getting close to where the fire lines are this morning. >> we've been on since 4:00 to help you stay up to date. the evacuations. pete suratos has been out there on the front lines throughout the morning. i know earlier you had to move back because of the danger. and where a you?

>> reporter: good morning to you, marcus, just after highway 128 off geysers road. we were up the hill and closer to the orange glow, part of the kinkade fire that continues to burn in the area. we saw a number of sheriff's vehicles zipping by here while were you doing the phone interview with cal fire. we did see them come by here not too long ago. you're seeing these images from a distance. we were a lot closer as that fire continued to bern. there were a number of fire departments up there and as we were setting up for our live report we started seeing smoke or fire make its way to the right of us. that fire was starting to pick up, at least the winds in the area were starting to make the fire move.

as we've seen with other fires in the past. that can go in different directions. it began burning last night near -- off kinkade road just east of clover dale. obviously that led to the mandatory evacuations in many areas including where we're standing off geysers road. alexander valley road. you have mentioned those roads that people have been told they should evacuate because of this fire. i want to go to sound from a fire official and people in the area reacting to what's going on. >> weather conditions like this as firefighters we're not being effective stopping the fire. we need to evacuate. pay attention. >> i'm sure they feel helpless,

they're working hard. you ve all the cal fire people, the hotshots people. >> reporter: there's some video we're showing near the flames of cars trying to getut of wn. in this geysers road area, alexander valley road, the roads i'm remembering right now but a number are being told to evacuate if they're near this fire. the kinkade fire burning in the distance. we know that pg&e weather stati stations last report more than 50 miles an hour. we're not feeling it down here. we'll continue to stay on scene and provide any major updates as they come in.

>> have you been able to physically see the fire line move because we're talking about how high the winds are i the area? have you seen that actually move? >> from where we're at, no. we're pretty far away from where the fire is now. obviously when we were up the road, not necessari directly to us but near us if it was going over the hillside that's when we saw it start to grow and that example of the smoke was black and fresh and making its way towards us. we can't see it going towards us right now. >> we have more on the evacuation centers coming up. a look at the forecast and your

thanks so much for starting with us here on "today in the bay." i'm marcuswashington. >> and i'm laura garcia. wa we'll get to your morning commute. concern about the winds in the area. >> this is what we feared yesterday. we knew we would have high winds and low humidity especially in the higher elevations and then you get a flame and it spreads so rapidly. from the past few hours and we've seen gusts up to 54 miles an hour. middletown we've seen gusts up to 69. in healdsburg 52-mile-per-hour gusts. we have over 30 miles an hour and for the peninsula up to 45. so it's still in short busts we have high winds coming through and temperatures are still very warm right now at about 61 degrees in this area. we've seen the flames that have developed spreading because the wind is going in from the

northeast and the humidity now at about 17% as we go throughout the day. we're going to still see some very low humidity and some high winds as those winds continue to come in from the north and northeast. and we do have the red flag warning that continues for the north bay until 4:00. we are going to see the humidity levels continuing to drop at about 5% and gusts over 60 miles an hour. for the valley and the coast we will see gusts up to 35 miles an hour. the east bay still under that red flag warning as well. as we can see the gusts over 35, we've already seen that and then for the santa cruz mountains we also have the red flag warning until 4:00 with elevations above 1,000 feet as we could see more gusts reaching over 35. this is a live look at our camera. we have a lot of cameras on some of the hill tops so we can see the live vup iew of very intens flames looking over to the

kinkade fire. we'll be monitoring that as we head to another really hot day. the peak of the heat. we have some very low humidity. we can see this map highlights low humidity and high winds. it puts bright colors where we have the highest and most elevated fire danger. at the weekend we'll see inland areas cooling off especially on sunday. we do have the potential of another high wind event developing on sunday but much cooler air. more on that in a few minutes. mike, a highway is close to the fire zone. >> 128 where pete is talking about over here, highway 101. closed right now for access as far as any through traffic.

that fire to the north and east of there and coming down or potentially coming down to the area. river rock casino has been evacuated as a local reference. there are signals out in parts of the north bay. traffic flows very nicely. south of the bay bridge you're at speed and the bay bridge itself, just starting the build for the cash lanes. coming up next on "today in the bay," we're going to continue our coverage, the very latest on evacuations on this 10,000 acre fire in the north bay as it continues to grow. ♪

live pictures for you this morning. the burn line there of the kinkade fire. that is now 10,000 acres burning. firefighters continuing to work as you see the fire intensifying. the winds are blowing causing the fire to spread quickly. our team is staying on top of the breaking news thisorning out of the north bay and that fire out of control, as i said, from overnight. >> that's right. evacuation orders include this morning river rock casino area. everyone who lives in the area is being told to leave. the fire started a little after 9:00 last night outside the geysers near kinkade roadnd byrne mountain road. some evacuation centers are being set up in sonoma county.

>> some of the locations we know about so far, windsor high school on windsor road. also the healdsburg community center on healdsburg avenue. we're told small animals are allowed at these shelters. your larger animals should be taken to the sonomafairgrounds. we have posted all of these evacuation centers and the information online at nbcbayarea.com. we'll continue to follow this. we have crews on the ground as well. kari is following what is going on with the windy conditions there as well. other news as well. the warriors ready to start their season in their new home. the big event happening tonight. first, happening now, investigators in england say 39 people found dead inside a large cargo truck all came from bulgaria. the truck believed to have entered britain saturday. emergency workers made that gruesome discovery yesterday. police say 25-year-old man from northern ireland is under

>> reporter: that's right, very rugged terrain, a very rural area east of geyserville where this fire has sparked. can you really see the orange glow popping as we show it to you. we were up the road on geysers road because we were on highway 120 right now. we had to move down because that wind was starting to pick up and proving to be a dangerous situation as thatire was moving. now we do know the kinkade fire began burning roughly around 9:30 p.m. obviously it's a mandatory evacuation as we're getting some wind picking up. i want to go to
