and the people who care for them, shining a light on this issue, a very inspiring night. can't wait to tell you about it. let's get right to our top story this morning and we'll start right here in washington. the impeachment investigation. and what happened yesterday, furious with the process a group of house republicans barged into a secure room at the capitol and then refused to leave for several hours. that delayed testimony from a top pentagon official. we got the very latest. we'll start with nbc's chief white house correspondent hallie jackson. >> there is a bit of a break in the action in what has been the relentless pace of this impeachment inquiry. elijah cummings will be laid to rest, so they are pausing to honor him. democrats and republicans are not letting up on making their case. after some of the president's allies made moves quite literally to back him up. still, in what may be a warning sign for the white house some in the gop are showing signs of concern about what this impeachment investigation has revealed so far. the president back in washington
7:04 am
this morning after a pennsylvania pit stop spent decrying the democrats and their impeachment inquiry. >> i say what's the witch hunt this week? >> reporter: on capitol hill his republican allies setting up a sit-in of sorts, streaming into a secure room to delay witness testimony for five hours, protesting the private process, even with some gop colleagues allowed to be inside. >> by golly, if they're going to do it, do it in public. >> it's finally reached a boiling point where members said they are so frustrated at the idea they can't be a part of this. >> democrats scoffing at what they describe as a stunt meant to spook witnesses. >> we had a group of members who attacked the committee system of congress. >> and you may wonder why is it happening now? because bill taylor gave a devastating opening statement. >> reporter: that reference to bill taylor's explosive testimony this week, he's a top diplomat to ukraine who in a deposition with impeachment investigators said he was told president trump wanted ukraine's president in a public box,
7:05 am
announcing investigations into the bidens and the 2016 election before key military aid was released. now the number two senate republican is signaling alarms. >> the picture coming out of it based on the reporting that we've seen is, yeah, i would say is not a good one. >> ashd the president taking heat for these comments. >> we're building a beautiful wall. you can't get over it, you can't get under it, and we're building a wall in texas. and we're not building a wall in kansas, but they get the benefit of the walls that we just mentioned. >> colorado, hundreds of miles away from mexico and the construction of any wall, overnight the president tweeting he was kidding and referencing people in the very packed

auditorium. wire the we're also starting to see glum impeachment strategy including lindsey graham. simply said yes and walked away before adding he'd like to see a more coordinated push to fight back. we'll see how the white house takes that criticism and whether they start to shift. back to you. >> hallie jackson leading us off, thank you. there is worldwide reaction to the president's speech in which he took credit for the cease-fire in syria. the invasion began when mr. trump suddenly withdrew american troops from that region. richard engel is in syria for us once again. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, that speech did not go well here. people thought it just added insult to injury. the kurds are shouting to anyone who will listen that they ed help. they are watching american troops leave who've been
7:07 am
protecting them and they're watching the russians move in. as russian forces set up shop in syria establishing outposts, even going on foot patrols this morning, president trump says he's the power broker in syria and a peacemaker. for convincing turkey to stop its assault on kurdish areas. an assault he effectively allowed to happen. by announcing it would take place in advance, and pulling back american forces. >> countless lives are now being saved as a result of our negotiation with turkey. an outcome reached withoan outct spilling one drop of american blood. >> reporter: president trump lifted sanctions on turkey just after his own envoy to syria said the u.s. has been watching turkish backed militias commit atrocities u.s. officials also saying those militias include former members
7:08 am
of isis and al qaeda. >> we've seen several incidents which we consider war crimes. >> reporter: turkish troops and those militias now raising turkish flags over kurdish positions while american troops have orders not to help their former allies who fought with them against isis. >> what a great outcome, congratulations. >> reporter: that great outcome is what was a peaceful kurdish region protected by the united states, is now being carved up by turkey and its radical militias, russia and its allies. widely accused in the past of using chemical weapons, ar so hundreds of thousands of kurds, tens of thousands of them children, are now fleeing their homes, just as the winter rains
7:09 am
and cold set in. kurds here are saying that they need help as they watch the u.s. forces leave and the russians move in. >> richard engel for us, thank you, richard for that and the impeachment showdown we turn to nbc's kristen welker for more analysis. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's go back to impeachment for a moment a dater the president told fellow republicans you guys got to get tough that they go and storm this secure conference room, an extraordinary moment on what was capitol hill was this orchestrated by the white house? what was the thinking behind that >> the sense is they're taking direction from president trump as you point out he wanted them to get tougher this was remarkable in terms of the optics, it was a delay tactic but the bottom line, and you heard this frustration with lindsey graham, this tactic is about essentially the process, not about countering what is coming out on capitol hill republicans are saying they want to see these hearings take place in public, well, they're going to get their wish. in mid-november democrats are signaling this is going to start
7:10 am
to be happening out in the open. the question is, how are they going to counter some of these revelations that are problematic from the president's perspective? >> that's what's interesting about what lindsey graham is saying, he wants to see the white house have more substantive response to take on the facts here i mean, this whole thing, impeachment, removal, it rises and falls on republican senators and whether they stick with the president. are you starting to get any indications that that wall of support that he has enjoyed is cracking at all? >> one of the president's close allies said they are watching it very closely the remarks by john thune essentially saying the testimony this week has been problematic for president trump, the fact that you have senate majority leader mitch mcconnell laying out how he's going to conduct a senate trial signifies this is seous and it's not getting swept under the rug. they want to see the president show more discipline so that
7:11 am
they don't have to defend him on other controversies. they want to have a clear strategy as it relates to this impeachment inquiry. >> well that leads me quite well to the final point here which is what's going on with syria that's another area where republicans, some of his staunchest allies have come down hard on the president's actions there, he's announced a cease-fire, the lifting of sanctions, he had a triumphant news conference, but what about his critics? >> they are taking a wait and see approach, giving him a little bit of a leash on this coming out and saying well, let's see if this cease-fire holds. but there's no guarantee, savannah, and the president acknowledged as much the real concern, will isis be resurgent? as the united states essentially ceded its role to turkey and russia and the president promised he was going to withdraw troops from syria that's not happening entirely, the president saying he's going to leave a small residual force to man the oil fields there, the bottom line, the sense is that those troops will be doing more
7:12 am
than manning the oil fields. >> lots to watch, kristen, good to see you we'll send it back to new york hey, hoda. >> craig is here joining the table, more breaking news. >> there's a dangerous situation unfolding in northern california, a wildfire has exploded overnight threatening homes, forcing evacuations nbc's sam brock has been following this one sam, what's the latest >> reporter: those images terrifying craig, good morning. the kincade fire erupted in sonoma county, an area that's been battered by deadly wildfires in recent years and this one fueled by wind gusts as high as 50 miles an hour, going through about 2,000 acres every half hour. video shows flames and thick smoke blanketing a rural road and making its way toward a small town called geyserville. giant cones of orange rage on hillsides.
7:13 am
latest stats we have, the fire at 10,000 acres and 0% containment. wind conditions and low visibility at the moment making it very tough on first responders right now, craig, there are no reports of any injuries but several areas are under mandatory evacuation a nearby casino river rock was evacuated last night and i'm told firefighters have been spraying it down in case an ember gets lifted from the swirling winds we know that the state's largest utility, pg&e, preemptively shut down power yesterday to large portions of sonoma this appears to be near such a shutoff region but the maps have not always been accurate i learned people downtown in santa rosa, 20 or 30 miles away, see the flames of this fire, a harrowing reminder of the tubbs fire in 2017 that came roaring down hillsides, jumped a highway and devastated coffey park. >> we hope firefighters can get a handle on that soon. mark zuckerberg was on capitol hill yesterday where he faced tough questions about the
7:14 am
social network's face checking policy nbc's business correspondent jo ling kent was there for that. >> reporter: mark zuckerberg came to capitol hill to defend his attempt to get into cryptocurrency, call lra what ended up happening is he faced a skeptical congress with a long list of problems. mark zuckerberg feeling the heat on capitol hill. >> why should american voters trust facebook going forward >> reporter: the facebook founder grilled for six hours by lawmakers. >> have you learned that you should not lie >> reporter: the billionaire ceo trying to convince members of congress that facebook's attempt to start a digital currency called libra similar to bit coin is a good idea. >> i'm sure there are a lot of people who wish it was anyone but facebook helping to propose this. >> reporter: both sides of the aisle pouncing. >> you're creating a whole new currency that could potentially be anonymous and hide all types of criminal activity, a huge concern to the safety of
7:15 am
americans. >> reporter: zuckerberg admitting facebook has a ways to go to win over doubters. >> i understand that we have work to build trust on this. >> reporter: but it was this testy exchange that raised the most eyebrows, alexandria ocasio-cortez hammering zuckerberg's recent decision to not fact check political ads >> do you see a problem here with no fact checking on political advertisements >> congresswoman, i think lying is bad, if you run an ad with a lie, that would be bad. >> you won't take down lies, or you will simple yes or no >> reporter: zuckerberg defended the policy with lester holt. >> i believe that it is important for people to be able to hear and see what politicians are saying that speech will be heavily scrutinized other journalists and other people >> reporter: zuckerberg did
7:16 am
promise, too, that he will not make that cryptocurrency libra available until all u.s. regulators approve it but zuckerberg is not out of the woods yet. he now faces 47 state attorneys general who are launching their own anti-trust investigations into facebook. hoda >> jo ling kent, thank you. elijah cummings will lie in state at the u.s. capitol today, a celebration of life ceremony was held for cummings at morgan state university in baltimore on wednesday. he died last week at the age of 68 due to complications from long standing health issues. today, cummings' body will lie in the national statuary hall, a formal ceremony open to members of congress, the cummings family and invited guests will be held this morning followed by a public viewing. now to heart stopping moments in phoenix involving a red light runner and a family crossing the street with a stroller this frightening close call was captured by a traffic camera so watch this. the family starts to cross the

7:22 am
the day, even that shift in the wind direction will bring in some higher humidity. as you get ready to head out this morning we are seeing all clear skies. you may have some smoky conditions across parts of the bay area. in walnut creek we're going from 65 degrees this morning into the upper 80s was we go throughout the rest of the day. this will be the peak of the heat with our high temperatures reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s. we're up to 93 degrees in ukiah today with oakland reaching 88 degrees. 90 in livermore, san jose and palo alto as we reach near record high temperatures. our seven-day forecast shows that it will be windy and still very warm tomorrow but the winds will start to calm down. we also have some calm winds and some quiet weather conditions as we still have heat. unfortunately, though we'll have some cooler air, another high fire danger as we go into sunday

7:24 am
bay. we had the winds and the power cut off over there in many parts of the north bay. watch for the local signals. and then the fire, the kinkade fire, causing closure for 128 to pine flat road. there is a corner, alexander valley road from highway 1301 to 128, your connector you'll work around. the evacation area started north of there but expanded to geyserville. we have better lighting for canyon and dry creek road to get you oriented, the kinkade fire is up there in geyserville and on that back to you. geyserville was a place a lot of people were going to evacuate the fire zone and now the town of geyserville has been evacuated as well. >> firefighters are doing their best. let's check in with nbc bay area's bob redell live out there on the scene. bob? >> reporter: laura and marcus, you can see the sun rise is very muted here in geyserville
7:25 am
because of the thick smoke hanging over this small town off 101. the entire community as you've been mentioning is under a mandatory evacuation. we've seen spot fires that have jumped the road. i want you to direct your attention over there. i'm being quiet to listen to what's going on. a large crackling sound. i thought it was miniature explosions. you can see that tree, we're looking northwest to downtown geyserville towards 101. that tree is going up and that's the sound we're hearing. i'm showing so you can see how much the fire has jumped. it jumped 128. it's burning in that direction. you look further to the right you see a line of fire there. as you continue you see the fire continues all the way across the road. and then almost a 180 and get back to this home, this grnhouse, two-story wooden structure that was threatened about 90 minutes ago, two hours
7:26 am
ago. you can see the backyard, all you have now are smoldering tree stumps. but the brush is gone and that's because cal fire did a back burn. they intentionally set fires so the fire would burn uphill away from the home and they're very confident that they saved the home. they just left. unless the winds change it appears this structure will be okay, great news for the people who live here. this is sound from earlier this morning, the cal fire spokeswoman describing the windy conditions they had earlier and what made this fire so challenging to fight. >> it's a very steep area. it's about ten miles northwest of the town of geyserville. up in the mountains. so it's very steep, rugged terrain. it's very dry. this is typically the time of year when the fuels of the vegetation are at its driest. combined with the weather that we're getting, it was about almost 80 degrees and very low
7:27 am
relative humidity. >> reporter: and it was very, very gusty out here in the 4:00, 5:00 a.m. hours. we had winds coming rustling the leaves, the sand, the dirt into our eyes. it was very, unfortunately, not good at you will for fireghters who have been fighting in this rugged terrain. you can see the winds have died down. we're getting that sun light and hopefully they can get the air attack going soon this morning. reporting live in geyserville, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> bob, thank you. >> see how smoky it is out there as well. people are fleeing their homes, they're evacuating, as we mentioned those mandatory evacuations are under way right now. in fact, we're getting word from the county of sonoma. we knew that the evacuation site were taking large animals there. now they're opening the whole thing up and telling the people to come. all people, large animals, small animals. it's now being treated as an
7:28 am
evacuation center. >> you can tell there are two evacuation centers open right now as well. the windsor high school on windsor road and the healdsburg community center on healdsburg avenue where can you go to a safe place during these evacuations. those are the centers as well as the fair grounds open to all large animals as well as people who are looking for a safe place to go during these evacuations. we know one crew we had out there at the scene spoke to a man in healdsburg and he said he quickly left his home in the middle of the night. >> well, we've had the power outage for the last two days and we thought that was bad enough. we were on our deck tonight and all of a sudden you could see smoke and it was like, what's going on? we looked up to the hills and we could see the fire going. the fire was coming down the hill towards the house.
7:29 am
>> we have posted all the information online for you or anyone that might need it at nbcbayarea.com. we're getting new photos from the front lines as well from the kinkade fire. take a look at this firenado photo taken by kent porter, a photojournalist with "the santa rosa press democrat." he's been capturing pretty stunning images. the kinkade fire has already burned, as we told you, over 10,000 acres. zero containment so far. cal fire just tweeted two structures have been damaged. this is video from above alexander valley tweeted by kent porter, "the press democrat" around 2:00 this morning. he says the flames moved down geysers road. that looks like the pavilion with a water hose trying to do what they can to really -- look at the wind, how strong that wind is or was at the time. and that is what firefighters were dealing with as that wind

savannah isn't sitting with us today, she's in washington, d.c., an incredible event. the hidden heroes gala savannah, even just that snippet we were watching showed how special that night was. >> it's so inspiring, every year i can't believe it, can't believe how lucky i am to get to meet these caregivers, they really are folks serving every single day, but they're your neighbors and friends, caring for our veterans and it means so much to just have them be recognized in one night so we tried to give them a really special night last night can't wait to tell you guys about it. >> looking forward to that savannah, we'll come to you in a few moments. starting with a check of top stories, republican lawmakers are getting creative as they try new tactics to oppose the impeachment probe, the two dozen gop house members stormed into a closed door deposition with a defense department official bringing house democrats' investigation to a halt. the maneuver delayed a deposition with laura cooper until mid-afternoon wednesday,
7:32 am
five hours behind schedule cooper later testified behind closed doors. the fast moving brush fire in northern california exploded to 10,000 acres overnight, the fire burning in sonoma county has forced mandatory evacuations in the area. wind gusts of up to 50 miles an hour are fanning those flames. there are no reports of injuries or any structural damage officials say the fire is 0% contained. now to some never before seen surveillance video that shows a california police officer fatally shooting a 16-year-old boy. it led to some fresh outrage in a 2-year-old case. this morning officials are asking the public not to rush to judgment nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer joins us with the latest on this one. >> the victim's family is suing fresno police and the officer involved in the shooting yesterday their attorney released two different video clips, one from an officer wearing a body camera and another from a daycare center where the shooting took place. first, though, a warning, the
7:33 am
videos are disturbing. >> stop right there. stand on your knees. >> when isaiah was stopped by police in fresno, california, body cam video shows the 16-year-old made a run for it. with multiple officers in pursuit he jumped a fence at a nearby daycare center, one officer is seen stopping and firing a single shot that killed the teenager, an attorney for the victim's father saying the teen was struck in the back of the head. >> stand up. >> the disturbing new video just released by the family's lawyer captures the 2017 officer-involved shooting that the police department, city and district attorney's office said was justified. but this morning the attorney says the video tells a very different story. >> disappointing would be a mild word but shocking to see that he's running, he's unarmed, he's clearly just trying to get away. >> the family has filed a
7:34 am
federal civil rights lawsuit against the city and the officer, alleging excessive force, unlawful deadly force, assault and battery, and negligence overnight police released a statement reading in part "the use of lethal force in this case occurred while officers were investigating a homicide the 16-year-old in this case was involved in the homicide with his brother and the brother was later arrested and pled guilty." while police body camera footage does not appear to show the shooting, it did capture the cross talk between officers in the aftermath. >> good shot. >> he didn't pose a threat to anybody and for him to be shot in the back as he's running is something that shouldn't be happening in this day and age. >> reporter: the lawsuit identifies the officer who pulled the trigger as sergeant ray villa vaso, an internal police investigation reportedly found his actions were within department policy, following the fatal encounter fresno police said the officer thought the

seen was reaching for a gun. the victim's family says he was unarmed, running away, and posed no threat. now the tale of the tape could be headed to trial we reached out to the officer involved for comment but have not heard back. >> fresno police told us the policy is not to comment on pending litigation, as is the case with a lot of police departments. eyan eeption in th case besides discouraging folks to -- despite what we just saw, not to rush to judgment, what else did they say >> they said the video does not show the officer's perspective, the camera was high up on a building, didn't show what the officer was seeing and they're saying it was known the 16-year-old carried weapons and that was part of their defense a story that's going to affect a lot of women, what you need to know about new concerns being raised by the fda about breast implants. but first, a look inside a really special event that i was lucky to be a part of last

the seen has changed. earlier out here, these trees are blowing. a lot of dust and ash in the air. the winds have died down and we have not seen any active fire situation. that is the fire for the area burning out there. where the sun is rising, the smoke is burning, and i'm just saying, we're not seeing it like we were earlier. it is being suppressed and the risk is being that inversion list. but we know they are out there trying to work it and if it is suppressed, it is cut lines of containment. i believe it is about 5:30 or 6:00 when we were trying to drive to one of the wineries.
8:24 am
we were turned back by the fire and you see why, can that smoke, a lot of flames, pilot lines on fire. we don't believe their live, but there was a risk they would come down on our vehicle. it was very windy and it is very steep which makes for very challenging conditions. here is a cal fire spokesperson. >> it is a very steep area if is about ten miles northwest of the town of geyserville. it is in the mountains, steep, rugged, dry, this is time time of year when vegetation is at it's driest. combined with the weather, it was about 80 degrees and low relative humid. >> just off of highway 101 and highway 128 it is under a
8:25 am
mandatory evacuation. the only people that are supposed to be here, the sheriff's law enforcement is out here, of course the firefighters and the media which is allowed in here in the back part of the lines here. as you look at the sunrise, that is the area that was burning, but right now we're seeing lots of smoke but not a lot of fire. hopefully it gives them an opportunity to get out and cut the containment lines and if it clears enough they can start an air attack. there is at least two structure that's have been damaged, we don't know of any injuries or fatal days. >> bob, before you go. that was probably a very scary
8:26 am
situation that many people had to go through. what was it like as you were driving through those flames on both sides of the road from you and you also said you knew where you were going, we want to let people know that up front. >> yeah, the difference between the situation we put ourselves in and the situation people are forced in is we weren't forced in that situation. i don't know what people were internals as they were trying to leave this morning. we were trying to get to a winery that we knew was threatened. we saw cloud of we thought we would have a clear shot there from. it was bad, it was a wrong decision, and we made a quick u-turn. as long as you're smart about it, we weren't initially, but if you know your exit is right there, we had just come through the area where there wasn't any fire, where there wasn't any smoke. so it was more of a matter of getting out of there and it was
8:27 am
a little nerve racking, but it wasn't the end of the world but we don't plan on doing that that again. >> stay safe out there. we're going to come back to you later. >> right now we want to take a live look from the nbc bay area sky ranger above the kin kaid fire right now. and you can see the plume of smoke coming from that fire, it has been burning since the first report that we got 9:30 last night. it is spreading very quickly within an hour 2,000 to 3,000 more acres burning trout the night. there have not been injuries with firefighters battling that but we know there are about 400 firefighters right now battling that fire. there are evacuations in place
8:28 am
right now we can tell you that the town of geyserville under a mandatory evacuation. that fire is so intense. zero containment of that fire, and there are evacuation orders in place. you take small animals, if you have them with you, and then there are fairgrounds. they're saying anyone that needs a safe place to go in the evacuations, that is where you can go. a lot of people don't have power in that area because the surrounding areas, and the planned power outages that people are talking about. so people with go to those evacuation centers and get power and shelters and this is a very
8:29 am
scary situation. we talked to people and people saw the flames and we're looking at a hot spot of that rare where that air is burning. has has been growing intensely because o the wind. dealing with this fire, misty wood is with the sonoma county sheriff's office talking to us about what to do. these evacuation orders are out, this is a cary situation. the evacuations are in place right now so what are you telling people isn't the fire continues to burn. >> yes, it does, the fire continues to burn and continues to increase in size. i think what is great is it ge
8:30 am
back to weeks ago. >> and what are you dealing with now as far as getting the word out for people. >> we have better alert and warning tools here in place. we have high low sirens on all of our patrol cars and they were used last night and this morning. we have all of our dispatchers and people who are trained in the primary way that we get ahold of people. and we are now also able to send wireless emergency reports. >> a lot of people may have family members in the area that has been evacuated. is there a way for way for
8:31 am
family member to contact people. >> 211 is the best number at this point. that is the number for all information, questions, et cetera about the fire. if it turns into something larger we may set up a missing person's hot line. we recommend anyone with questions to call 211. >> all right, and talk to us about those evacuation centers. i know you have those in place, what can people get once they get there? i know some people may not have had a lot of time to get out. >>. >> referee: yeah, a lot of times what we give is information. sometimes that can be the most helpful thing for people and connections with resources. >> i know a lot of people go there. i know a lot of people who were hearing about this may want to help in some kind of way.
8:32 am
we have not heard of anything, but do you all need anything if people want to help out, donate, volunteer. is there anything you need? >> i would address you to the socoemergency.org. they have shelters, evacuation sights, and needs as people learn about this want to help or have questions, it is a great resource for that. so e with appreciate that. >> i know you roads blocked off and people will need be blocked off. stay away from the geyserville area if is smokey. there is ash, flames, if you are
8:33 am
interested in what is going on, we're posting video and social updates at sonoma sheriff so they can get a sense of what is going on behind the scenes. we'll try to keep people as updated as possible. >> of course let us know weme wt to get that information out to the public as soon as possible. >> another important thing is school closures and those happening in sonoma county. they have announced they will close all schools today. this is as a cautionary measure due to the fire threat in the community. take a note of that. people will have to rearrange a lot of scheduled. >> you just heard misty talking about that.
8:34 am
evacuation center that's are up and running right now. we are also want to get that information out. misty was just telling us about the sonoma county fairgrounds. that is where you can take your large animals as well as if you're looking for a place for safety during the fires. there is also a hillsberg community center and we're told small animals will be in santa rosa. >>er there was an evacuation center. you can see the time lass here of that fire this morning. that is what we have been talking about. you see how strong those winds are as they're pushing the fire and the smoemt. that fire is burning out of control there, and mandatory evacuations being issued in the
8:35 am
town of gooizervil guider. geyserville. a lot of people are going to other places. >> sky ranger overhead, this is all of the smoke that is billowing into the sky. this fire started after 9:00 last night. it burned overnight while most of the bay area was sleeping and it is really enveloping the area there. you can see a closer look at the rugged terrain that is very steep on some of these peeks and that makes it very hard for some of the firefighters to not only get to some of the remote locations, but to draw the fire lines and try to fight it. >> just looking at the scope of it all, the winds have spread the fire, the flames are burning, and just the tough
8:36 am
situation. we dealt with it two years ago and people will are scared and fareful of what happened and remember necessa reminiscent of what happened two years ago. >> we see this birds eye view, very rural out there, we're not dealing with so many of the homes. look at the concerns right there. they're not saying they don't know how the fire started at this point, but we know it has been growing very quickly overnight. >> and you were saying that the rugged ter rain is there. it was dark out there, it was hard to see, and for the safety of all of the firefighters they were doing many things to prevent the fire from spreading. they intentionally sett fire in certain areas to try to create a
8:37 am
barrier. >> a burn line. >> prevent the fire from spreading even more. they were doing many things throughout the night trying to prevent it, and we have been talking about it as well. shutting off the power to some 27,000 people in sonoma county. it is not all pg&e, but certainly a lot of people in the area affected by the power outages throughout the area. but again -- >> and that is all of the smoke, you know, further south or what not into the bay area as well, dry, dry condition that's we're talking about out there. and the wind that's we have seen overnight, some of the gustier ones. some of the other locations there, and that really fds those flames, and that is what we have seen overnight. we're hoping that we will get a
8:38 am
chance to dive down a little bit later today, which will be a good thing, but lookt that. as we took that over head, now that daylight is upon us. firefighter wills use that same information because they're going to put their aerial attacksri has riseen they can do water drops and more there. >> we had this report. >> yes, he is on red winery road about 10 minutes from downtown geyservill >> we're hear along red river ryan ri. i think there may be a tasting room up there. there was a structure up there that was surrounded by fire but they afear have saved that. and just some decorative bark that continues to smolder along the road. a lot of little spot firing left
8:39 am
ahead of this fire that was fuelled by winds this morning over the ridge topped around 70 miles per hour. pushing the flames around the area here so that is what we have been monitoring. putting a spot fire out before it can put embers out. the wind picking up these embers has pushes this. they're estimating 10,000 acres but no one really knows until they get a plane up dean a scan of the fire area and then they will get an accurate gps acreage of this fire, but it continues to burn. i heard one report that a home was lost, but again this is all initial information, we'll have to wait until they can get crews out there to assess the damage of this fire. it started around 9:45 last
8:40 am
night and there was about 10,000 acres all along the winery. it was very gusty winds and the wind pushing the fire around causing the embers to raise down all around us. i have posed some of the video of what we have encountered along the canyon there. fire, like i said earlier, it was raining down all around us. and as we were leaving, fire crews were heading into that fire to try to save some of the homes up there, here are some of our crew that's are mopping up this fire that continues to burn in the decorative part, my photographer doing great this morning. as the sunrises, you can see the smoke, that smoke earlier this morning was laying down side ways and you see now is wafting
8:41 am
across the area there. that is a sign that they have dieing down a little on the fire line. they are continuing the mop up work here. that is the latest here. the winds have died down a little bit been they're going directly to where the fire is at and putting it out. >> on top of the fire, thousands of people in the north bay this morning is coming out. they are following along with a new round of out ages. >> the outages continue off and on for the next few days. we have more on what you need to know as we prepare for possibly more outages, chris. >> the whole point of these outages is try try to avoid sparking a fire with damaged equipment after a high wind. we asked pg&e where the fire
8:42 am
fits along with those poweroutage maps and they say it is near the footprint of one of the outage areas where they lost fire at 3:00 yesterday afternoon, so we don't know how close se this morning, but question show you the map of how many people are without power in morning. in all, 170,000 pg&e customers were told they would be in the dark. they are in our area, and they are across san mateo county. because of the outages, these four schools closed because they would not have power. parents had to scramble for child care, but we have more school that's are closed not because of the outages, but because of the fire. more of the information on the school closures you can find at nbc bay area.com.
8:43 am
they're talking about the red flag warning. the wild fire danger will pass so the utility can deploy crews. this outage, unlike the last one, they also deployed a plane with infrared technology. as big as thisutage as been, as inconvenient, pg&e says this may not be the worst of it. they're expecting another wind event and they expect that there could be an even rgeer power outage event coming up this weekend. they say it could be the biggest one yet. >> thank you, chris. >> that is so very concerning. more possible outages for a lot of people. more wind. we need rain. >> we do. it will be awhile, i don't see any in the forecast. it has been very hot as well,
8:44 am
but at least duo hawe do have a down as we look at the live cameras around the bay area, we have more new cameras that pg&e has installed. this shows how smokey the rockpile area is, and how poor the air quality is, and this wide view from the hills, you see the fire biurning, the kinkade fire continuing to burn. the last update we had was about 10,000 acres. and we have the low visibility, the hazy sunshine, and so far the smoke has been blowing directly off shore, right across parts of northern sonoma county and the rest of the bay area, but as the wind shifts today we may see the air quality and the visibility changing as we go into the rest of the afternoon.
8:45 am
we still have a northeasterly wind coming in and blowing is closer to geyserville. and the humidity is still down in the teens now at 12% as the temperatures go up to 90 degrees today. our wind forecast shows we will have gusty winds especially for winds above 10,000 feet. going into 2:00 a light wind. wrels we'll have winds blow about 20 miles per hour and continuing to relax later today. humidity levels also going down which is very common of what we see in the middle of the day. we normally see our very low humidity dropping even more in the middle of the afternoon and coming up in the overnight hours but we won't see it coming up very much tonight into early tomorrow morning. and then we are still seeing
8:46 am
fairly clear visibility here, not very hazy as we look at san francisco. we could see that changing as go into the rest of the day. look at how warm it is, half moon bay at 77, while it is 58 at s martin and livermoor. some of the hills and the valleys it is heating up, so it is 24 degrees cooler in napa than yesterday at this time. very hot temperatures today, mostly 80s. while the valleys could reach up to 93 degrees and then it does cool off going into the weekend. mike, you're tracking the impact now on the north way? >> that is right, the fire is the big story. we continue to cover that fire. we have one issue here that is the slowing for the 101.
8:47 am
and independent of any of the other information we're covering today. i want to show it to you, it is well south of the latest evacuation centers to open. overnight we heard it was okay to bring the larger animals over there. that is now open as an evacuation center. both well south of the geyserville area. it has been mandatory evacuations through that zone. it is all of the way down toward goo geyser vil. you saw all of that bark burning there but the crews moved on because the structures had been staved. meanwhile there are power interruptions. no major complications, folks are getting used to that. it is a pretty typical build.
8:48 am
lightenning a little on the left and we are really pushing north. this is your typical commute. no major concerns but in addition to the north bay, we also had the bay and they are also having some power and interrupts. there are no mayor concerns and we will watch that and watch here as well. thank you, back to you. >> thank you, very good advice there. as we continue now to follow this fire that is burning, the good thing about it is that daylight is now upon us so we can launch our sky ranger that is giving us a great overhead view of the fire that has been burping. look at the terrain burning as
8:49 am
well. we know we had a hot, extended summer it has felt like, and temperatures will be high again today and that will make it tough for fight fighters. they're saying that alone is tough to deal with. >> yeah, they have 400 firefighters out there working right now. certainly a tough situation that has been burning since 9:30 last night. and you can see how massive this is. that smoke that continues to billow from the flames that are burping down. look at how widespread it is, you can see just all of that area that is being affected by that which caused many of the evacuations we have told you about, the entire town of geyserville. a lot of people heading to those evacuation centers. i want to tell you too so you can be mindful you need to evacuation the hillsburg
8:50 am
community center. that is also the fairgrounds where you can take large animals with you and that is open, it opened about 49 minutes ago. so if you need a place to go because you are fearful of the fire or you are under that evacuation, that is where can go. >> thank you right now we want to check in as well. we're joined by jenni schneider who is a so mnoma county supervisor, talk about what is closed. >> what is closed currently is the hills burn unifying district they have announced the schools in those districts will be closed because of the precautionary measures.
8:51 am
alexander valley, geyserville, lincoln valley as school site that's will be closed this morning. austin creak. that is located on the cam pause. santa rosa city school district has schools closed as well. >> and right now you can't anticipate how long they will be close snd. >> at this point we're just monitoring these, many of these schools on the list were closed already due to the power shut off. those in the affected fire area. we're monitoring that situation closely. >> how will you contact parents once you realize that you to keep those schools closed?
8:52 am
>> the local school districts notify the parents, so they will handle it for their local community. >> and you mentioned that, like, cloverdale and hillsdale, they're cautionary measures right now, it's not like the students are in threat of the fire right now. >> no, not at this point, this is precautionary. >> we're going to add this information online. i appreciate it. you know the list rather quickly there of the school that's are closed. >> absolutely, and we do post school closures on the website which is scoe.org. >> okay. >> so people can check there for updates. >> are you having to close your offices as well? >> no, we're open for normal
8:53 am
business operations all day. >> what about if any students or even teachers dealing with this, it can be tough for them, do you have anything in place to help them deal with this as it is going on? it can be frightening for a lot of people. >> we know this is a dramatic experience, particularly in liegtt of recent events, if the more of our students and staff, so we have a crisis ri response team that has been deployed to the effected areas, so couns counselling support and other things that have been deployed. >> all right, jenni schneider, thank you for that update. if there are any changers, ease let us know. >> new information coming in right now, evacuations that are
8:54 am
under way, we have a map to show you some of the impacted areas there. sonoma county just posted this online. several evacuation centers as we're telling you are set up right now, but take a look at this evacuation map that you're seeing here. you see that amber orange yellow color there is the evacuation orders that came overnight for people in geyserville. the mandatory evacuation centers. so it was interesting talking to someone from the law enforcement. they're saying a lot of people are not leaving and they do that at their own risk, but know that if you choose that decision, that if you need something, resources may not be able to get to you. >> yeah, they can't even send their crews in, too, but it gives you an eyed and we know the evacuation centert the
8:55 am
fairground social security open this morning, the community center. people can take their small animals with them at the shelters. if you have large animals, a lot of people have horses and what not, and the so mnoma county irgrounds and we saw people heading outh tir animals. >> and geyserville is one of those areas, and pete has been in that area throughout the morning giving us updates on what is going on. what is going whereon you are now. i know you have moved throughout the morning. >> yeah, that is right, we just moved down to downtown geyserville as you mentioned or as was reported in the show, the mandatory evacuation order was put in place so we made our way down here.
8:56 am
for folks familiar with these parts you a winery company, some galleries here, just seeing it he. but to the right i wan to show you there is not too many people outside, but you do see the fire presence here. it looks like bodega bay. we see a number of other police departments here. so it looks like they do have that presence here in the event that something happens. it was big enough of a -- that they put that mandatory evacuation orderer in place. now it is up to people if they want to evacuation, but they're telling them they should evacuate due to these conditions, and as i told you we're showing you some of the businesses in this area and we did talk to some businesses. one guy owns a medal company. he lives in a different part of
8:57 am
town. a mandatory evacuation, wanting to see if his company is doing all right. he looks fine right now. we're not seeing any danger approaching this area. this winery went in there where they handle their business, one guy fwhent to get his electronics out. they don't want to lose any important records. he said he will come back and forth, but right now near downtown geyserville, not too windy, no fiere approaching thi area. they want to be caution about it because it jumped off of moody lane not too far from here, but we're going to stick around and see if i can get updates from one of these fire agencies over here. >> before you go, pete, i mean just from our vantage point in
8:58 am
your shot there, it looks hazy and smokey, is it hazy? >> yeah, sure, one of the big reasons i had a mask on earlier, because of the fire and the smoke, but it was very windy. i know during some of our live shots you saw the wind whipping around. the wind was strong and you saw the line to the fire shifting a bit. when we see what was showing behind us. at least right here, maybe i'm just getting used to the smokey air at this point, but it doesn't seem as bad as it was earlier today. right now as that fire continues to grow, the last time, i have been in and out, i know that 10,000 acres -- i don't know if it has changed since then, but it has been -- is that still the number? >> yeah. >> yeah, we talked to cal fire a
8:59 am
little while ago and they kept it at 10,000. so it will be interesting now that daylight is upon us. >> all right, we'll let you talk to those firefighters and see if you can get more information as well. we'll check back with you throughout the morning, thanks, pete. >> we have been talking about the wind gusts, and that is really the fuel to the fire. >> and now i'm checking the air quality in that area, and we're seeing the air quality and parts per million that would affect anyone with breathing problems or anyone in the nearby vicinity, but we're going to see those winds picking up as we go throughout the day. we have seen the highest wind gusts this afternoon and going into the rest of the afternoon. but looking near lake sonoma. the poor air quality we have in the area. we have also seen from some of our cameras, we can see the fire
9:00 am
as it continues to spread in that veryry brush. we are seeing some very low visibility, but we're not seeing a wide swath of the bay area being affected by the smoke, but we're expecting to see improvements throughout the day. it will be really hot for those firefighters out there today, imagine fighting the fire at 90 degree temperatures and that is what we will to deal with today as we have not only hot temperatures but very low relative humidity and breezy winds.
