looks fantastic. no delays right flow, and upper east shore freeway, no major issues. you'll notice this red in the squiggling section. that's the portion of 101 affected by the work on the muir fire. and that area is still closed because of the kinkade fire. it's breaking news we continue to follow as the wild fares tear apart parts of california. >> right now there's more than a dozen fires up and down the state so far the kinkade fires has burned 16,000 acres being fueled by strong winds and it's only 5 march contained. at least 49 buildings and homes have now been destroyed. about 2,000 people in geyserville and hillsberg you

are under evacuation. our crew discovered broken equipment that may have sparked the fire. pg & e cut power to quite a bit of the north bay, but we have learned that they did not cut power to high-power transmission lines until after the flames broke out. well, the changing winds will certainly cause a lot of problems. look at the smoke billows into the bay area as well. firefighters are up geffen a very tough fights. there's a spare the air alert issued today, because all of this smoke moving in is not good to breathe in. be care of if you want to go for a morning run or something. we want to show you video of the kinkade fire that you see overhead, the thick, rugged terrain is what firefighters are dealing with here, but look at

all this smoke, that's tough for them even to deabout. bob redell joins us live this morning. bob, let's talk about it. the smoke is not the only problem we're facing going into the weekend. >> reporter: correct, we have the potential for pg & e power outages, but places like parks, playground, not ely where you want to be today. the heavy smoke is expected to drift southward, which mean places like concord, where we are at right now, could get covered in haze with particulate matter. the air district is warning this could be particularly unhealthy to people sensitive to bad air. the best advice is to stay indoors and keep your doors and windows closed. a number of people already buys masks. the hardware short in san

right now we are under a microclimate air alert. the bay and the coast will see it during the afternoon. the inland east bay anytime from 3:00 to 7:00. the south bay from 4:00 to 10:00. so we are going to see really thick smoke at times due to the kinkade fire. an union date on that as well as the weekend forecast coming up in less than five minutes. right now the bay bridge looks great. not really a -- all right. >> he lost his microphone there. we do have more breaking news there.

there is a death investigation under way at a recycling facility in san jose. let's check in with kris today. she joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: well, we haven't confirm some information, so we won't make that publ. what i can tell you is this is happening in the green way facilities off 101 and 880. the green waste facility handles all sorts of recycleables. there are officers deep onto the private property. and we do have video from earlier this morning where the investigation first started out here at the recycling facility. we managed to talk to a couple employees who didn't feel comfortable talking on camera, but did confirm to us that there was a body found inside the facility. we don't know how the body got there. we don't know if there was foul play. what i can tell you is we did

see an ambulance and paramedic leaving the scene as we were arriving, no lights, no sirens. so clearly not transporting somebody to the hospital. what we had not seen, though, at this point is the coroner's van, so we don't know if the investigation is just going longer or perhaps the coroner just hasn't gone here yet. we'll keep asking question. san jose pd does not have details for us just yet. thank you very much. obviously a developing story right now. 5:09, and we've been talking about this, the weather and the traffic, of course, the weather, kari, you're telling you it would be a calmer day? >> a much-needed break, but unfortunately the smoke from the wildfire will be moving in as we go through the rest of the day. if you need to get outside, try

to get out there early, not because of just the hot temperatures, but also that smoke moving in. we'll have kind of two things working against us today. it's even going to warm up in san francisco. we will see our start this morning at 62 degrees, much cooler right now in the north bay, with napa starting out ought 49 degrees. it's 504 santa rosa. in palo alto it's 59, 58 degrees in san jose. as we check out our morning trend for mountain view, as you get ready to head out, we're at 59 degrees in the next hour, dropping down just a couple more degrees before sunrise, and our temperatures do heat up fast. we're saying get out there for those activities before our decrats start to reach 80 degrees. we'll feel that at noon. we're going to get even hotter going into the rest of the day, as we go hour by hour in early afternoon in concord we're at 83, palo alto at 84, even the upper 80s in the peninsula

today, with some of our areas getting slight cooling in spots like antioch. in the north bay, we're still looking at hopefully more containment ohat .fire 'l have some very hot weather for those crews up there. for cupertino, we're at 90 at 4:00 today, also briefly hitting 90 in the south bay. as you make evening plans, expect mid 80s, dropping int the mid 50s later tonight. as we go into the weekend, new watches and warnings will go up. this is highlighting some of the same areas where we had the red flag warning that expired yesterday afternoon. this is for elevations above 1,000 feet. it does not include san francisco and parts of the valleys from the inner bay down to the south county. it does include the north bay as well as we head into saturday night. it does end on monday morning,

and so once again it's for the higher elevations. right now here's what we know. we are expecting the strongest wind event we have seen in a couple years now. unfortunately it looks like it comes during the early morning hours, so a lot of people may be asleep. before you go to sleep sunday night, assert morning, we could start to see the winds picking up and those gusts anywhere from 20 to 40 miles an hour in the valleys. anywhere from 50 to 70-mile-per-hour mountain gusts, this could bring down som trees and cause some damage. over the weekend will be the time to make sure that all of 9 items around your house that may blow in the wind is secured and put away. we are looking at the upper-level windterns coming in from the east and surface winds from the west. this will what will c the smoke, and we'll start to see the smoke coming in for the morning, for the north bay, the

afternoon for the rest of the bay area, even though it will be a light wind. as we go into the weekend we are still hot tomorrow, 87, but on sunday, when we expect that high wind event as a small cold front moves through, it will drop off our temperatures quite a bit. and some mid 70s for highs. we also will be quite warm in san francisco today, and those gusty winds picking up late saturday evening. mike, you're updating a crash along the coast? >> that's right. only one lane, as i understand, is affected, in the southbound direction, bur it is involving a vehicle reportedly overturned, on its side perhaps as it went down the embankment, i think, but not down the hill. that would be scary. this is another issue we're tracking. we have reports of -- just got word overnight that the traffic

control around pigeon point has been cleared. highway 101 in that stretch is just fine. as we look southbound 880, we still have -- the reason i point this out is it may affect the off-ramp there as well. a little slowing, you just saw that, see the yellow that pops up? there will be an issue as this is right off the interchange out of the castro valley y. our senses are just waking up. and the bay bridge, though the toll plaza, there are a few folks starting to wait for the morning pollute. here we have highway 1, muir beach, those are iconic spots, but there's a closure through highway 1 because of yesterday's fire. we'll continue to follow its

it's just a scary time. we have no idea if we'll have a house to come back to. fast-moving flames, evacuations and a path of destruction left behind as a raging wildfire burns in the north bay. our "today in the bay" team is live across sonoma county tracking the fight. and weep trackle smoke set to move into the rest of the bay today. good morning, everyone. we want to get to kari hall. it's looking calmer today. >> yes, looking calmer, but the day after a major wildfire breaks out, we can see the drifts of smoke, and at times maybe even ash falling. we're getting ready for that.

the spare the air alert today, you'll start to see thempacts of the smoke getting thicker, and then for the bay and the coast, it continues to move down into the rest of the bay area for the east bay, as well as the south bay later on this evening. it's also going to be another hot day, as we check out what's happening, we see it going from 57 this morning to 71 at 10:00, then 81 at noon, eventually reaching near 90. heading over to mike, you're tracking two crashes. the first one has been taken over by pacific pd over there. we may not get further updates. no major injuries reported. all around the bay, the other is across the bay. here is southbound 880, we continue to see slowing southbound, coming into the area, possibly blocking the

off-ramp. they need a larger tow truck. so overall looking at the friday traffic. i'llhow that build coming up, but we just got word of a small fire. i think it's easily control off the roadside, highway 4 over at laurel. obviously we are on high alert for any reports of fire. we will track that, but you have much bigger cases. >> firefighters now working against time befores conditions get worse in the north bay. >> easily the largest right now is the kinkade fire in the north bay. here's where things starred so far. the fires burned 16,000 acres in the area around geyserville. at least 49 structures are destroyed. about 2,000 people in geyserville and healdsburg are under evacuations. we've had team coverage send

yesterday morning. let's staking to sonoma county. sharon is there for you. >> reporter: you have to be careful out here. we've seen so much all right this morning. we pulled over here, because we saw some fire trucks and firefighters out here. you can see a little flare-up here on the hilltop. they're looking for hot spots. we came from an area where homes were in complete rubble. it was very heartbreaking to see. it was devastated that whole area, just about a mile away from here. in daylight yesterday you could really see the devastation, with virtually nothing left of the homes, just bed frames, other metal scraps and parts of the homes. that's what we're seeing out here this morning. in this area, our reporters counted in daylight at least six structures destroyed.

evacuees describe how quickly they needed to leave their homes. >> he said get out, the fire. i thought, my god no, and when i open up the screen door, the whole hill was bright head. you couldn't see in front of your hand, but you could see this bright orange. >> reporter: evacuees are staying at nearby evacuation centers in healdsburg and sonoma county. back here live, you can see one of the engines. they tell me they're working on equipment here, but again, we're probably going to see them heading up to the flare-ups that we're seeing on the hilltop. very good sign that at least firefighters are out here still trying to deal with the active fire, luckily not as bad as yesterday, but still we're seeing embers and a lot of smolderi smoldering. >> i'm sharon katsuda for "today

in the bay." the cabrillo fire burned about 95 acres, near the santa cruz county line. as of last night it was 25% contained. the fire is not threatening any homes. firefighters are attacking a 35-afire burning just north of lake del drool near livermore. as of last night, it was a tough one. there's zero containment. more power outages coming this weekend because the danger is supposed to get a lot worse. >> at this point homes and businesses on really all sides of the bay will feel the impact. bob redell has the details. bob? parts of places like concord

could see the lights go out, as more winds are expected to be coming in sometime this weekend. pg & e has put out this map. you'll see the yellow areas you'll notice those areas cover large swaths of alameda, santa clara, san mateo counties as well as portion of the north bay. in coco county, up to 30,000, these outages are designed to prevent wildfires, could start saturday evening and run through monday. >> we do think it will be the strongest offshore wind event this season by a large margin. >> we are preparing with our communities and state agencies for a large-scale shutoff that has the potential to be on the same order as the one on october 9th, but a longer duration.

>> governor gavin newsom yesterday, he addressed these outages. he expressed outrage over the fact that california, a state so innovative, so entrepreneurial can't keep the lights on. he blames pg & e for decades of mismanagement and in his words, putting the shareholders first. reporting live here in concord, bob redell for "today in the bay." 5:36 right now, of course a big concern for those firefighters, they'll get a break at least today. they say they're going to go after this fire as much as they can. >> and then you think about how hot it will be today as they're fighting the fires, and the time we have under the next wind event is so small, you have such a small window to get control, because we are expecting some high winds to develop late saturday night, really peak on sunday morning. even the valleys will have some high winds this time around,

anywhere from 20 to 40-mile-per-hour gusts, and in the merchandise we could see the winds anywhere from 50 to 70 miles per hour. that could bring down some trees and cause some damage, and so we are expecting this to also last for several hours. looking at our forecast for today, we are seeing our upper level winds still blowing the smoke overshore, but then we start to see things shift going into the rest of the day. that will bring in the smoke, but the winds are still pretty light here. we also will have light winds throughout much of the dade tomorrow. then as we go into sunday morning, we start to see the winds rushing in from the north, and at times anywhere from 35 to 45, even 50 miles per hour in parts of the north bay, and then even in the valleys this time we could see throughout sunday afternoon some really high winds, which of course all you need is one little thing that could cause a fire to grow out of control with some high winds.

we do have a fire weather watch already in effect that will start on saturday evening. we also have a -- that damaging wind event, so there's a high wind watch. a lot to watch here as we go throughout the weekend, mike. you're looking at the north bay. >> that's right. we continue to follow the kinkade fire. of course it's still huge up there, and 128 continues with the closure. the reason i point this out first, is perhaps folks made plans earlier before this fire broke out. just avoid that area. remember that sonoma shaven as well as calfire has been noting it could potentially threaten highway 101, so be aware that could cut off a significant route. this closure near the muir fire that's under control, but we still have that tracffic contro.

much, but i can tel you that several people who work at the facility talked with us off camera this morning. they didn't feel comfortable talking on camp ra. they told us a body was found here among some of the material they were working with here. who that person might be, we don't know. how that person might have died, we don't know at this point. we do know that there were also paramedics and an ambulance that were teenaged here. when they left, no lights, no sirens, which tells us they are not transporting anybody to a local hospital. we have been reaching out to san jose police for information. the officers here are just not talking. they are working on the investigation, but the big crime scene truck is here, so we might be here for a while. >> we know you'll gather as much new information as you can. 5:44 right now.

we had a wide range in temperatures this morning, but check out how much cooler it is in the north bay, compared to 24 hours ago. it is 25 degrees cooler notice, and that's also a sign that our winds are calming down that allows for the temperatures to drop. now that we do have the calm winds, we are starting out in the mid 50s, as you head out to the b.a.r.t. station, grab a jacket. you'll be tossing that to the side as we warm up to the low 80s. we see our winds coming in from the east to start. as we go into this evening, we'll get ready for another high wind event, and then starting to taper off monday.

we see the change in our temperatures going from 90 to 75. b.a.r.t. just reported a ten-minute delay, some sort of equipment problem. they could be able to get through this no problem, get into san francisco, here's a delay that's developing. the bay bridge targeting, we're talking about just under a half hour ago, the backup now forming out of the maze. overall, though, looking great, a disabled vehicle on highway 4. not a major issue. over here.
