dozen fires up and down the state of california. here's where things stand now. >> so far they burned 16,000 acres. it is only 5% contained. we now now at least 49 structures senior destroy ed yo. that's even though pg & et did cut power in an attempt to avoid triggers a wildfire. it shows what many now believe is the moment that fire ignited.

sharon is on the ground. >> the glowing red, and this how that was spared by the fire. let's look at some video earlier in daylight yesterday, you could see the devastation with virtually nothing left. just bed frames and other metal scraps. evacuees described.

>> and sonoma county. right now we're going to take off to a different location, where we hear that firefighters are -- >> all right. >> sharon, thank you. near the sanity crew county line, as of last night, it was 25% contained. that fire is not threatening any homes right now. >> new video attacking a 35-acre fire burning north of livermore. the mines fire started a little after 9:00 last night, as of last night, there was no containment. mines road remains closed. these fires often spread by win. >> every part of the bay area

may be touch by blackouts. bob redell has more on what we can expect. >> reporter: pg &e is afraid, forecasting we could be see the strongest offshore wind event this season, which is why they're warning about another round of widespread power outages. you'll see the areas mart in yesterdayo it's a large swath of our area. coco county, and in alameda county, go down to the south bay, santa clara county. you'll notice that san francisco for the most part is spared. and into the north bay, most of

the north bay is covered in yellow. again, these are areas that pg & e are predicting. just throwing out a number of -- in alameda county could be 57 customers. these outages could start saturday evening, run through monday. pg and e's ceo, his has a message for customers who are angry with his utilities. >> i under your anger, but let mess people help you. >> reporter: governor newsom expressed outrage that california, a state so innovative and entrepreneurial, cannot keep the lights on. a lot of people certainly

concerned. thanks so much, bob. >> looking at the wind direction behind you, kari, that's a big concern as the smoke moves into many areas. >> the high went eend will call a lot of problems throughout the weekend. we see the direction of the arrows, this is what carries the smoke. for the kinkade fire around northern sonoma county, we will see the smote initially blowing off the coast, but then we'll see things shifting. the winds stay fairly light. as we go into the evening, we'll start to see the winds coming in from the north and northwest, which will blow that smoke all across the bay area, and will make it unhealthy, our wednesday calm today, but then by sunday, a strong cold front moves through. we'll see our winds increasing from north to south. look at the wind gusts anyway from 38 to 48 miles an hour, and it gets even higher, as it

continues to spread across the bay area. this will not be a wind event just for the hills. we'll also see high winds in the valleys as well. this will be a bigger and stronger wind event, so we'll talk more about what that could do to the bay area and the impacts. the commute is building steadily. >> that's right, but holding steady as far as the slower spots. that's better news. 20 minutes ago we had concerns over a couple incident, one of them 880 over san leandro. of course a light build for friday, but we are seeing the traffic holding steady down towards about hesperian. that cleared from the nimitz, look at the trivalley, a great drive. no problems the traffic across the san mateo bridge, that's coming off the nimitz, but we

showed you traffic flow, relatively smooth, the backup is here, but it's not showingny problems. back to you. thank you very much, mike. more breaking news. a body was found. now a death investigation is under way at a recycling facilities in san jose. >> kris sanchez is live at the scene. you've been there all morning long. what have you found out? >> well, we were out here first and we have not heard anything from the police at this point. they're not confirming this is a death investigation, but we can tell you they are still here o the scene at green waste, a recycling facility here in an industrial area in part of san jose near the 880/101 interchange. just in the last half hour, we saw the crime scene -- we expect

that they didn't transport anybody to the . several employees told us there was a body found here inside this facility among the recyclable items. we don't know who that person might be, their age or how it is they died at this point, but we do have some other information that we're trying to confirm before we get that to you. we want to be responsible about the information that we pass along. we are still asking san jose police for more information. when they get back to us, we'll be sure to let you know. it's not really affecting traffic. this is an industrial area, and it's business as usual. we see the recyclable trucks going to work. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." it is 6:11 right now. if your kids use tik tok, you'll

goods friday morning. even though we're starting out with clear conditions, and also good air quality, we're going to see drifts of smoke coming in today. santa clara also will be very warm going from the up ir50s to 84 by early this afternoon. we'll talk about the warm weather and more high wrinds coming up in less than five minutes. oakland in the nimitz, but the head lights heading south may have another problem. i think we traded one crash for another. good morning. tesla posted an unexpected profit. the stock jumped 17% by the close yesterday. the opposite is amazon. its numbers were less than wall street expected.

that's going to cost jeff bezos dearly. we figure he could look as much as $7 billion today as stock sinkses in reaction. bezos is the richest person in the world, for now. his loss could be big enough to catapult bill gates back into the position as world's richest, but both are still very rich. google said it made a kwan come step forward. the white house says it was a collaboration between the trump administration, google and uc santa barbara. the trump administration has set aside money for quantum research, but a google spokesperson, i talked to google, who said they've been working on it for 13 years, and that they appreciate any support

warms up the temperatures. so now the winds have ed. look how much coolert is in napa compared to 24 hours ago. as we start out the day, it's cooler, but we'll still be hot later today, reaching 89 in napa, 91 in concord. in livermore we're reaching 86 degrees, even warm in san francisco. as we start out this morning, we also have to deal with unhealthy air quality. the rest of the bay area seeing the smoke filtering in anytime between 2:00 and 10:00 this evening. all because of the contained fire we've seen. we'll start to see it moving into the east bay and into the rest of the bay area, even though the winds won't be that strong. it's going to be smoky later on this evening. we'll get ready for the next wind event, starting late saturday night into sunday morning. we could have some high wind

gusts, and any fires could spread rapt rapidly. we're going from 90 degrees today to the very strong cold front bringing us gusty winds. by sunday only highs in the mid 70s. then the winds start to calm down on monday. the big focus will be on the high wind and the fire danger for the end of the weekend. mike, we're traiting crashes in the east bay. >> we're trading out. on the nimitz -- let's talk a nice big looks over here, what you're looking at is 880 south from 238 down towards a street. we have a little clearing. now, a new crash at washington may slow folks down, but i haven't seen a change in the sensors. so we'll continue to track that. a mild built where we expected, 238 down in toward hayward. we also expect to see the

then we'll start to see the -- and by this evening smoke will move into sparse of the east bay, so we will keach those winds light. tomorrow we also have light winds and more smoke coming in. especially for the north bay, and the rest of the bay area seeing it. i'll have more on this forecast and some of the impacts we are expecting coming up. plik, you're starting out with two key spots? >> the backup for the toll plazas, west 580 slows a bit right here o fast-trak -- there's parker the spider. stay out of meyer face. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, and of course the

geyserville and healdsburg are affected. >> reporter: we pulled over, because we saw firefighters here, this is the reason why they're still out in this area. you can see some of the hot spots here, the glowing red. you can see in the darkness just beyorchd the trees, and this house that was spared by the fire. let's look at some video from earlier. yesterday you could see the devastation with virtually nothing left. we're seeing that this morning here, too. in this area or reporters counted in daylight at least six structures destroyed.

>> reporter: evacuees are staying at nearby evacuation centers. right now we'll take off to a different location where we are hearing firefighters are fighting an active fire at the moment. firefighters on the peninsula is still battling the cabrillo fire. it's burned about 100 acres, burning along highway 10, near the santa cruz county line. as of last night it was 20% contained. we're told the fire is not threatening any homes. this is new video from the east bay attacking a 50-acre fire the mines fartarted a little after 9:00 last night. we are told it is 60% contained, but mines road is still closed.

these fires often spread by wind are the -- >> every part of the bay area may be touched by blackouts, as winds pick up this weekend. bob redell is joining us from the east bay with what we should expect. >> reporter: laura, marcus, places like here could see their lights go out this weekend. the pg & e is warning of widespread because of concerns abt high winds into the area. we're going to put you on something right here on our tv screen, as interactive map. you can see the area is marked in yellow. those are the areas that could lose electricity. you'll notice there's a lot of yellow on thismap. it covers hugh swaths of contra costa county, it moves south. go to the south bay, you can see santa clara county has a lot of yellow. mover up the peninsula, a huge

blob of yellow, especially on the coastline. san francisco for the most part is spared. as you go across the golden gate, huge portions of the north bay could also lose power. they're projecting about 48,000 customers to be without power, 57,000 customers in alameda county. these outages which are designed to prevent wildfires could start saturday evening, and run through monday. >> we are preparing and preparing with our communities and state agencies for a large-scale shutoff that has the potential to be on the same order as the one october 9th, but of a longer duration. >> reporter: california governor vin newsom yesterday expressed outrage at pg & e, at the outages. he says, you know, he's pointing out the fact that california, we're so innovative, so

entrepreneurial, yet we can't keep the lights on. he blames pg & e for decades of mismanagement and putting their shareholders first. we've been talking about the conditions this weekend. the big concern is wind could pick up again. kari, sewer saying we could see high winds again? >> yes, this is when we expect our high wind event to develop. this will not just be the hills and the mountains, but also will impact the valleys, where we can see gusts up to 40 miles an hour, and for the mountain gusts anywhere from 50 to 75 miles per hour. this could bring down some trees and cause damage. so we need to prepare, bring in the patio furniture, make sure there's nothing loose around your house.

we are expecting the winds once again to pick up late saturday night, where we could see the high wind gusts, we already have a l a high wind warning in effect. i'll have more on this and what whee expecting in a fup minutes. mike, you're saying it's more of a weekend note for drivers? >> that's right. we're going to start with the weekend. it's a big concern, of course, the kincade fire, the fire still going on up there big time. and that includes the area by river rock casino. this is still an ongoing issue north of healdsburg. as we look at the rest of your drive, we have a slow build here.

this is the last weekend for weekend work. the rest of the good news it's friday, with a a lighter commute. back to you. >> thank you, mike. breaking news. in the south bay there's a death investigation under way after a body isound in a recycling facility. kris, definitely a tough situation for the people who discovered the body. >> reporter: yeah. it's a very odd morning out here. we just did go ahead that confirmation from a san jose police spokesperson, it is a death investigation. she says she's still working with detectives to get information she can release to the public. we have some reports that we are trying to confirm as well. we want to make sure that we are responsible with the information we pass along.

the big crime scene uni truck is out here. it been out here for about an hour. i can tell you the green waste facility on charlarea. near 101 and 880. several workers this morning told us the body was found among the recyclables, but at this point we don't know the age of this person, how they died we did also see an ambulance staged here, but when they left, they left without lights and sirens. in my experience, that means they're not transporting anybody to the hospital, so we don't think there's anyone more than the person who was found dead here. again, we don't know how they here. we are still working to get some information. we know that the spokesperson is working with the detectives to see what they can release. as soon as they do, if we are off the air, we will mush it to the social media platforming and

good friday morning. we were under a microclimate weather alert, as we take a live look outside. beautiful sunrise, but we also know that's back we have some smoke drifting in. our temperatures heat up once again, going from 5 at 8:00, to 84 at 1:00 today. we'll talk more about this and a look ahead for our high weekend wind event, coming up in less than five minutes. northbound, the taillights look like they're bunching up, but look at the bottom number there. yeah, there is slowing just north of the coliseum. pretty traditional. thanks so much, kari and mike. 6:44 took. we've been talking about everything that's happening in the north bay, but crews are fighting more than a dozen fires

across our state. sohern california is burning in last cloud, the tick fire, which you see right here has forced some 50,000 people from their homes. several structures are destroyed. here's a wide look live from southern california. you can see the smoke billows there. terms a difficult tike as they continue to fight that fire. that fire has burned nearly 4,000 acres, and is only about 5% contained. firefighters says it's a wind gust making it difficult to battle. >> don't by lulled but the fact you don't see open flames right now. >> so far firefighters have not been able to pinpoint on you that fire started. >> 18 california cities have money challenges according to new numbers. three are in the bay area. el cerrito, richmond, oakland

between the elections and the russians, rather, the originalens of the investigation into the investigation into the election and the russians. we have very little detail. we'll bring them to you as we get them, but relies on hours of testimony and hundreds of pages from the mueller report, the world areas understanding of why and how the genesis of all of this is fairly simple. this guy, carter page, who was associated with the trump campaign, blabs to an australian diplomat that the russians offered help to the trump campaign. that diplomat then alerted his connections in washington. whoa then in turn alerted the fbi who wiretapped page. that's been the narrative for several years. turning to the latest investigation, some republicans are saying it's unfair. you'll recall a number rushed the special facility where republicans and democrats were questioning witnesses.

these members of congress are calling for open testimony, not testimony behind closed doors. as we've been pointing out next week, many investigations start behind closed doors and move into the public sphere, including the benghazi hearings, started in private per established house rules, just as you're seeing day. in fact here's the chairman of the benghazi committee, republican trey gowdy, saying of course they had to start the investigation behind closed doors. this tape is from 2014 when the republicans were in charge of the house. >> our private hearing was much more constructive than the public hearing. public hearings are a circus. that's why i don't do many of thing, i don't like toe do them. it's a free show. the private interviews are much more constructive. >> we don't expect much in the investigation today, but then again, who knows? you can follow me at twitter. thanks so much, scott. this weekend, it is time to grab the ski gear.

mt. rose ski tahoe is open. i know it doesn't feel like ski season yet, but the sierra is still mostly snow free as well, so they fired up the snow-making machines and build up a pretty salad base. mt. rose will be the first to open up so far, and it's the third straight year it's opened in october. mt. rose is really one of the higher elevations. >> but i love going skiing in the 50 and 60 degree temperatures. >> welcome to california, baby. we've been talking about how hot it is here, and then again another high wind event. so let's get start are started with all you need to know. a beautiful sunrise. it is so nice to start out with the clear skies, also some cool temperatures, as we go through the day, though, we know it's

going to heat up once again. going from 59 degrees at 7:00 to our lunchtime temperature at 82. keep in mind this is the end of october. we should be reaching 72 for a high. we'll be at 86 at 1:00 this afternoon. he a look at our hig today. concord up to 91, and 90 in santa rosa. we're still having some hot weather in those areas where they're still trying to get containment on the kin dcade fire. as we look alternate dub ling, getting started this morning, we'll have some unhealthy air quality, as the smoke moving in. anytime from 2:00 to can have we could see the smoke moving into the east bay, the peninsula, and south bay from 4:00 to 10:00. you'll start to see the skies getting hazy. we can sigh the wind direction as it changes today.

we'll start to bring in that smoke to the east bay, and down into the south bay later on this evening. we're watching out for that, then we turn our attention into a high danger from saturday evening into monday, anywhere from the north bay into the east bay, all of these areas will have a high fire danger as our winds pick up. we're looking at the wind speed forecast, light today as well as tomorrow. sunday morning we start to see bright colors theaters showing the high winds picking up. this is going to be a widespread high wind event as the temperatures drop and this cold front moves there. this will caught any fires to spread raptly. and the reason why pg & e saying they're most likely going to shut off power to a wider area. we'll have more updates on that.

because of the volume right now, with the curves at terra linda. police have arrested two more people in the connection with the deaths of 39 people found in the back of a container truck in england. the driver also remains in custody on suspicion of murder. he has not been charged, and police have not released his name. detective it is believe the people are from china. first, reports of a body found overnight. what workers are saying so far. smoke, fire and power outages. who might lose power, and how people are coping today. it's 6:53. you are watching "today in the bay."

nearby evacuation centers. a new round of controlled power outages, because of fire danger that's supposed to get a lot worse. pg & e warns it could be large more widespread. the areas market in yellow are potentially outage zones. the outages could start as soon as saturday night, and could last through monday. governor newsom is once again outraged the state can't seem to keep its lights on. a. fire means smoke, which is impacting the air quality in the bay area. in san francisco, dublin, walnut creek and san jose, a spare the air alert is being issued. you can see how heavy the smoke really is from sky ranger.

the kincade fire smokes is expected to make air quality worse. let's look at the online conditions. the air quality is still listed as healthy, but you see the areas in red there as well. we'll see the winds shifting, so we are seeing it in the north bay right now, but it will start to come in from the north which will bring the smoke into the rest of the bay area. also very hot with inland temperatures reaching near 90 s. hot tomorrow as well, but then on sunday very strong cold front moves through. it's going to drop our temperatures and cause parts of the bay area to possibly get gusts anywhere from 40 to 75 miles per hour. so very concerning. >> very concern. we'll have more later. and relatively smooth this morning? >> we do have traffic, it's just not a major problem right now.
