breaking news we've been following for several days, at this time there are more than a dozen fires up and down our state. as we have been telling you, the largest is the kincaid fire in the north bay. here is the very latest. that fire has burned more than 54,000 acres. in containment, sadly, has dropped to 5%, 94 buildings have been destroyed, another 80,000 are threatened by flames.
4:32 am
firefighters say they believe it will take until at least november 7th to contain the fire. there are dozens of schools shutting down today because of the smoke and power outages. we have a full list on nbc bay area.com and we're running them on the bottom of your screen as well. now to the new evacuations that were ordered overnight in sonoma county as this fire continues to spread. >> "today in the bay" live for us in windsor, sharon. what you seeing out there? >> well, lauren, marcus, it took about three different road closures just to get through to here. now you can see what's behind me on east shilo road. we're told that the fire is just beyond this area and you're seeing an officer over here on old redwood highway at east shilo road and this officer right when we arrived told me that there was a red glow behind him when he first arrived around midnight, but you can see now there's this darkness beyond him. he said because the fire had moved to the north from here. now, when we were about to head
4:33 am
over there, we heard a loud boom, a loud explosion. you may want to just stay in this area. this is what we're seeing in parts of windsor right now. this is why people have been evacuated in the east shilo road. very dangerous situation. power is out in this area as well. so, be careful if you have to travel in this area, but this whole area has been evacuated for some reason we are still seeing some cars try to get through. so that's the very latest from this area. back here live, you can see that at this intersection on old redwood highway, the stoplights are out still. we are seeing some street lights that are on, but just beyond this area, we can barely see in this darkness we believe in that area the police officer tells us there are homes so that's why they've been evacuated. reporting live, i'm sharon live in the bay. >> sharon, thank you.

4:33. the latest when it comes to the forecast because we have these strong winds over the weekend. a little bit of break is coming today for the firefighters. >> yeah. but it will continue, kerry. >> right now i'm starting to see for the most part the winds calming down, but i am still seeing in some of the highest peaks around the bay area 30 to 40 miles per hour gusts. then as we go throughout the day, that smoke will drift into the rest of the bay area, very unhealthy for the north bay and for the rest of the bay area, unhealthy for sensitive groups if you have breathing problems or young people or the elderly may have problems in this smoke-filled air as we go throughout the day. here is a look at the wind direction starting out this morning with some of those gusts at about 20 to 30 miles per hour in the lower areas. then as we go into the rest of the day, we start to see the wind direction changing, the winds will calm down. mostly as we go into the afternoon, we're looking at winds at about 10 to 15 miles per hour. we have been talking about this
4:35 am
short little break of some calm winds before we start to see the winds picking up and by tomorrow afternoon and into the evening, the north bay will start to get some gusty winds once again. so i'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes, mike, chp is warning act the bridges. >> it's because of the winds overnight. i know you're talking about them dying down or at least getting less of an issue. we still have the warning. golden gate bay bridge. that's not usually on the list but we will follow that. we also see a little slowing westbound 80 coming across the carquinez bridge. the bridge and north of there the glen cove fire that affected that. carquinez bridge is open. one lane in each direction reserved for fire crews traveling to and from that glen cove fire. again, on either side of i-80. meanwhile, we have highway 101 which reopened but that's good for the morning.
4:36 am
of course we expect to have much less traffic for the commute. folks are trying to get to their evacuation areas. 128 is still closed because of the kincaid fire. back to you. 4:36 for you right now. at least 180,000 people have been forced to flee their homes because of this fire. here is a look at all of the evacuation zones. the latest evacuations are in the shilo ridge area of windsor as the strong winds push the kincaid fire closer and closer to homes. now, there are several evacuation centers open this morning, however they're filling up very quickly. a list of those locations. the napa valley expo center, thesy know ma county fairgrounds, the petaluma fairgrounds also the st. mary's cathedral opening at 8:00 a.m. for those impacted. this morning pg&e says they hope to restore power to all customers before the next wind storm set for later in the week. they're now raising the number of people impacted to more than

a million in the bay area. if you have power now, you may not later this week. "today in the bay" chris sanchez has what pg&e is saying about that this morning. chris? >> reporter: it's so incredibly still out here. i took a video right now, you would think it was a picture. none of the winds that triggered that outage event nor the winds that are fanning the flames up to the north, because these winds are very calm, pg&e says at first light they're try to restore some of that power in some areas. some areas going to take a little longer. because there were gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour, there could be some extensive damage so they're warning customers in napa, salano, sonoma and marin counties they could be in the dark a lot longer than expected. here is where the public safety
4:38 am
power shutoffs are still in effect. those are the pink icons you see on your screen. you see green, yellow and orange icons where the power is out for some other reason likely wind related damage. now in just the last 15 minutes, we talked with pg and e by phone and told us 445,000 bay area customers are still in the dark because of the most recent public safety shutoff. >> we have to take extra time and make sure there's been no damage to the equipment and that there's no debris or any kind of hazard laying across the line. >> already pg&e is warng of another outage event coming up tomorrow because of more, strong dry winds this week. tomorrow through wednesday midday, 35 counties will be under this public safety power shutoff warning that includes us here in the bay area in the north bay in particular, also the santa cruz mountains. we'll be tracking this for you as we track when the lights are coming on from this most recent

event as well. we'll talk about some tree damage also coming up in the next half hour. in the menlow park, chris sanchez "today in the bay". coming up next on "today in the bay" more live team coverage of the wild fire. plus the other news of the day. signs of the economy slowing down. if you're looking to change jobs, why you might want to rethink your strategy. and if you saw a lot of people dressed in halloween costumes on social media this weekend, that's certainly no surprise. one of the biggest ways you play a role in the sale of those costumes, even if you don't dress up.

♪ good morning i'm contessa brewer at cnbc headquarters. today business headlines. wall street set to open higher this morning. the dow futures are up 88 points right now and the market coming off a positive week. the nasdaq had its best week since august. the s&p 500 came within a point of its all-time high friday. on the watch list for investors this week, reports on consumer confidence and jobs, the federal reserve holds two-day meeting and apple reports earnings. a new survey of business economists finds just one fifth say their firms have hired additional workers in the past three months. that's down from one third in july. the slow down comes as more companies report slower sales and profit growth. economists also expect the

economy to slow in the coming year, partly because tariffs raised prices and cut into sales for many companies. businesses are also less likely to offer higher pay even with an unemployment at a 30-year low. spending on halloween is expected to hit $8.8 billion down from 9 billion last year but social media could play a big factor in the halloween sales. survey from lending tree finds nearly half millennials admit buying halloween items simply to include them on posts on instagram and snapchat. more than a third of gen-zers say the same. get this, marcus, laura, men are more likely than women to say their halloween spending is driven by social media. >> really. is that true, marcus? >> i haven't purchased a costume in the while, but i think about it every time i go on social media. >> a few more days to debut it. >> thanks, contessa.

4:43 for you. coming up, kerry will keep track of the forecast for us as firefighters work to put out the flames in the north bay. >> we'll see smoke drifting in this morning and we're seeing mostly clear visibility in san francisco now, but as we go throughout the day, it's going to get really unhealthy spending time outside. we'll talk more about that and what else is in the forecast coming up next.

jose gone ghosn works next door. he rigged nearby homes and barns with sprinklers and then watched and worried as the fire raced towards him. >> have you ever seen the fire jump from that ridge line over to this side. >> no, not on my 30 years that i have been living here. >> you changed the entire life of probably five to ten families today. >> he was modest about it, too. his idea actually ended up saving most of those structures. it's a trick others are now attempting as the fire marches south. you need to be ever so careful because if you need to evacuate, that's really the most important thing. >> that's exactly it. >> try to rig that up because you could be endangering your life. >> fire is moving so quickly and continues to move too, kerry. >> yeah. we have seen it change direction. it's been very erratic because of these high winds.
4:48 am
look at how high those wind gusts were yesterday. specially early in the morning when we were at the peak of our wind event. so we had those winds all the way up to 93 miles per hour in the hieldsburg hills. right now i'm seeing the wind gusts more like 40 to 45 miles per hour in that area. and then we had a gust up to 87, vallejo in the area of the glen cove fire, we had a wind gust of 56. walnut creek reaching 38 miles per hour. so, we're still seeing the breezy winds, but the wind has been blowing all that smoke offshore. as we go throughout today, the smoke from the kincaid fire will start to move into the bay area by this afternoon. as we see those winds coming in from the north and also the northeast, but the winds will be very light so that smoke will get trapped in the valleys and will make it unhealthy to spend a lot of time outside throughout the day. this is a look at one of our live cameras, looking from pepperwood west right over the

hillsburg hills looking at the kincaid fire. not sure how long this camera is going to be here, seeing how close that fire is, but really unbelievable to see these sights as this fire continues to grow out of control today due to those high winds and also the low humidity. we're starting out this morning, temperatures in santa rosa at 40 degrees. it is 51 in napa. where we do have the higher winds the temperatures are a little bit warmer, but where the winds are calming down, those temperatures will drop. so we're in the upper 40s right now in livermore. now 54 in san martin. san jose is at 51 degrees. going into the rest of the day, our highs only reach the low 70s for this afternoon with the east bay highs in the upper 60s and low 70s with pittsburgh today reaching 73. we'll see a high of 70 in hayward. in san mateo, expect a high of 72 today. and 68 on the embarkdaro. north bay, mostly low 70s and
4:50 am
also some breezy winds to start that will start to calm downgoing into the rest of the day and then once again there will be a shift in the wind coming in from the west and northwest. going into tonight, our winds are very light. we'll also start out tomorrow morning with some light winds. then as we go through the forecast, we're going to see those winds picking up again. and this is such unfortunate news because we know that we need a lot of time with some calm conditions and even some higher humidity, but we'll have another low pressure system coming in that will cause those winds to pick up as we go into tomorrow night into early wednesday morning. and so as we see on our map, we can see that secondary low that will be moving in, but the other problem is that we had high pressure close by. when you have high pressure close to low pressure, it makes the pressure gradient what we call and makes the air flow very rapidly and now the direction of that wind will be blowing offshore creating a very dry wind. going into the end of the week, we're going to start to see those lows moving away for a
4:51 am
little while as high pressure moves in, we'll start to see our temperatures warm up going into the weekend but only by a few degrees. so we're looking at highs today in the low 70s. gusty winds increasing for tomorrow evening into wednesday morning and then we'll see things calming down again in time for halloween into the weekend with highs reaching into the upper 70s. mike, you have been tracking the roads all around the bay area. >> that's right. kerry, this first map we're showing you looks great. green all over and light traffic flow. now what you can't see is the wind. that was kicking up, of course, all yesterday and still warns about it overnight. we should see a smooth drive no, major problems. but not at the toll plaza. bay bridge, still looking standard here. no problems and just a light back up for these cash lanes. 4:51 as we get started with that monday morning commute which will be lighter, much lighter in many spots because of the
