28th, 2019. from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi, everybody, good morning, welcome to "today," nice to have you with us on a monday morning. that play is worth an instant replay. he lets the ball hit him, and he doesn't drop his beer. >> the nats fan made some reference to the astros couldn't hit it hard enough to make him drop his beer. they didn't get that game. we'll see what happens in the next. >> with the nats losing three in a row, the beer was important. people talking about this u.s. raid that killed the most wanted man in the world,ed leader of isis, targeted in a covert operation saturday night. it started when eight helicopters carried a group of elite u.s. army delta forces and rangers into northwest syria from iraq. the mission went on for several hours with president trump and his top advisers monitoring that

raid from the white house situation room, and one of the key tips that helped the u.s. finally track down abu bakr al-baghdadi. reportedly came from one of his own wives. the president made the official announcement of his death in a dramatic sunday morning news conference at the white house. >> baghdadi was vicious and violent and died in a vicious and violent way as a coward running and crying. >> we have complete coverage this morning, let's start with nbc correspondent richard engel who is in syria this morning. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this is not over. overnight, u.s. forces and kurdish fighters here in northern syria targeted the isis spokesman, they are trying to capitalize on intelligence they gained from that raid while it's still fresh. abu bakr al-baghdadi called himself the ruler of an islamic empire. but kurdish intelligence officials tell us a spy in his

inner circle helped lead u.s. commandos right to him and turn baghdadi's hideout into a hole in the ground. satellite images this morning show the compound before the raid and the rubble now in its place. after 100 u.s. special operations forces in eight helicopters backed by jets and drones flew in for over an hour, and descended on baghdadi. president trump watching on secure communications. >> he was screaming, crying and whimpering, he was scared out of his mind. >> reporter: as americans special ops and a dog chased baghdadi into a hidden tunnel. >> trying to escape, but it's a dead-end tunnel and it was brutal, but it was over. and as i said, when he blew himself up, the tunnel collapsed

on top of him. >> reporter: our cameras found a deep crater where the compound had been, a building with a gaping wall. >> a large crew of brilliant fighters ran out of those helicopters and blew holes into the side of the building, not wanting to go through the main door because that was booby-trapped. >> u.s. special forces were on the ground for hours here, hunting for intelligence. abu bakr al-baghdadi founded isis. at its peak, it controlled a large swath of land across a rock in syria. he called it the caliphate. it sent and inspired terrorists around the world. over the last five years, u.s. special operations forces and allies, syrian kurds destroyed the caliphate. baghdadi on the run. until this weekend when the isis leader was killed in a smuggling town on the turkish border. the hunt for baghdadi reportedly

kicked into high gear this summer with the arrest and interrogation of one of his wives and there were over the years quite a number of wives. the cia learned from her his general location in idlib province and from there, a kurdish informant, someone who was close to baghdadi, earned his trust, passed his information back to the kurds, they were relaying it on to the cia that put the pieces together. >> richard engel on the ground. retired admiral james stavridis, an nbc news analyst, good morning to you, your first reaction when you heard that abu baghdadi had been killed. >> overwhelming sense of approval for this action, particularly, savannah, the superb work of our special operations teams, the

conventional forces that backed them up, that moved them, that get them to the objective and indeed, the work of the intelligence community, the cia, the national security agency, our satellite, and also, savannah, a feeling of thanks to the kurds who were absolutely central to this moment. >> and i want to talk about that in a moment, but let's talk about isis now. you've said that isis still poses an extreme danger. what is likely to happen now? what is isis' next move? >> savannah, isis is not a single individual, unfortunately. if it were, this would be over. it's not. just like winter is coming, the islamic state is coming back. they're an ideology, they are also a very dangerous network. they're decentralized, so unfortunately, i would predict, just as we accelerated an operation that was in the pipeline to take baghdadi, they

will accelerate operations they have in the pipeline, particularly targeting europe, i would guess and i would be very concerned as the holiday season comes on here, the beautiful christmas markets, that's going to be a rich target of revenge for the killing of baghdadi. >> you were talking about how this is happening as the u.s. forces are leaving syria. we talked about the kurds and how involved they were in this operation. can you shed any light on that? >> i can. unfortunately our kurdish allies who have been with us every step of the way are feeling bruised and rejected because of our departure and the president's competents that were done with this region of the world. as a result, it is unlikely in my view that we're going to see the level of cooperation that enabled this baghdadi raid to occur again. that is why we ought to celebrate the death of baghdadi, isis will come back in some form, but the big strategic

picture here, savannah, is we need to work with our allies, partners and friends in the region if we're going to continue to construct a coherent strategy to go after the islamic state. >> admiral stavridis good to have your perspective. that operation was named after an american who was tortured by isis. we'll have exclusive reaction from her family in the next half hour. another major story this morning, the california wildfires spreading out of control. the governor has now declared a statewide emergency. hundreds of thousands have been ordered to flea from their homes and power has been shut off to millions to try to prevent even more fires. nbc's sam brock joins us with the latest on this story. hi, sam, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. right now, there are still more than 3,400 people on the front lines of this fire trying to prevent scenes like this from

happening again. there have been more evacuations and more homes burned in sonoma county. overnight, even more destruction, the kincade fire now the site of raging flames. >> to say that conditions are a tinderbox is probably an understatement. >> reporter: the blaze nearly doubling in size to 54,000 acres, bigger than the city of baltimore, containment moving in the wrong direction, now just 5%. all fuelled by hurricane force winds. and extremely dry air. the blaze destroying almost 100 structures, including the historic, soda rock winery. fire collapsing part of the building, turning its 150-year-old history to ash. california now under a state of emergency. the fire so erratic, the path of the flames caught many by surprise. >> have you ever seen the fire jump from that ridge line over to this side?

>> not in my 30 years that i have been living here. >> reporter: nearly 200,000 people have been forced to flea their homes, but even those attempting a safe escape, coming very close to danger while others not given enough time. with nearby evacuation centers at capacity, the herman family is forced to sleep in their van. >> megaphones, evacuation, mandatory evacuation, get out now. >> reporter: but that proved difficult for some when a major highway was forced to shut down, smoke and flames choking off an exit for evacuees. this morning, displaced families waking up to a harsh reality, nearly 2 1/2 million people across the state still without power, and many fearing the worst is yet to come. and one of the main concerns for firefighters this morning,

making sure that the flames didn't jump over highway 151. winds staying down will help. but the getty fire erupting near the 405 freeway spurring mass valuations. >> sam brock, thank you. and now to new twists in the impeachment investigation, a key witness called to testify this morning is set to be a no show on capitol hill, and meantime, we're hearing from another key figure in the political race, former vice president joe biden speaking out. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker has the details on all of it. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. in an interview overnight, joe biden is taking aim at president trump, reacting to the president's repeated attacks on the russian investigation. >> president trump says the russian interference is a hoax. >> he's an idiot.

everybody knows this. everybody knows it. nobody doubts it. >> reporter: biden also saying he's confident in his frontrunner status despite the tightening democratic primary. it comes against that backdrop of a busy week in the impeachment inquiry and today a congressional cliffhanger, will charles kupperman show up on capitol hill a former adviser of john bolton, the white house is trying to block kupperman's testimony, and democrats are threatening to hold him in contempt if he doesn't appear he filed a lawsuit asking a judge to make the decision tim morrison is set to appear. house investigators say they are eager to hear from john bolton overnight president trump attended game five of the world series here in washington, and he didn't get the warmest welcome. take a look. mixed reaction there you can hear some in the crowd booing him, and chants of lock

him up the white house declined to comment overnight. mr. trump heads to chicago for an event honoring police chief later today. >> kristen welker, thank you. craig joins us with another big story. >> california congresswoman g s resign amid explosive allegations she had affairs with members of her staff. nbc's geoff bennett joins us from capitol hill with more on this. >> reporter: a dramatic downfall for freshman lawmaker katie hill, the california democrat had leadership positions in house leadership and the powerful house oversight committee but weeks of reports about her personal life and an allegation of an improper relationship with a staffer in the end all proved to be too much. >> we have done everything that we can to pass bills. >> once seen as a rising star in the democratic party,

congresswoman katie hill set to step down. the freshman lawmaker making the announcement in a letter that reads in part, it is with a broken heart that today i announce my resignation from congress. this is the hardest thing i have ever had to do. but i believe it is the best thing for my constituents, my community and our country. it comes after the house ethics committee said it would look into allegations hill had a sexual relationship with one of her congressional staffers. hill denies the claim, but admits she did have a relationship with a female member of her campaign. hill who openly identifies as bisexual, called it consensual but inappropriate. that relationship provided fodder for the tabloid, when nude pictures of hill and the campaign staffer were published online. hill is going through a bitter divorce, and in the emotional letter to her constituents, hill blamed who she called her abusive husband and hateful political operatives for the leak.

having private moments weaponized against me has been an appalling invasion of my privacy. hill apologized to those she has hurt writing i am not a perfect person and never pretended to be. katie hill was elected to congress as part of the 2018 blue wave, flipping a district held by republicans and making a name as vice chair of the powerful house oversight committee. she has the distinction of being the first female member of congress to resign in the me too era. house speaker nancy pelosi in a statement said hill has made a great contribution as a leader of the freshman class but added she has acknowledged errors in judgment that made her continued service as a member untenable. it will be up to california's governor to call for a special election to ultimately fill katie hill's seat. >> geoff from the hill there. thank you.

the houston astros, just one win away from winning their second world series in two years. >> that is hammered into left. it is gone. a pair of two-run homers tonight for the astros. >> giving houston a 4-0 lead. they would go on to win it, 7-1. the astros now have a 3-2 series lead game six tomorrow back in houston, but here's the moment that everyone is still talking about this morning. we told you about it at the top of the hour, came in the 2nd inning, alvarez hits this home run over the wall in center. the ball hits a nationals fan, right in the chest. there he is, right there. boom. the guy's name is jeff adams, he chooses to keep a tight grip on the two bud lights, rather than try and catch the home run. afterwards he was asked whether it hurt, he said no, the astros

don't hit that hard. he got to have his cake and eat it too. that is not easy. >> that was probably like 12 bucks each. i'm not dropping them. ball park beers are expensive. they don't have to hit them hard. they just have to hit them a lot. which they seem to do. anyway, we're talking about high fire danger. northern california, gusty winds early this morning, diminishing by the afternoon, and in southern california, the strongest winds will be late in the afternoon, diminishing later today. however, we've got another wind event unfortunately. a rough week. another strong high built southward, a pressure gradient increasing wind speeds. if there's any saving grace, this is not going to be a hot santa ana, a cool one. very gusty winds, northern central areas of california, the peaks will be tuesday afternoon into wednesday morning. not quite as strong, but as we move into southern california, unfortunately, this could be a strong event. new fire weather watchers are in effect. peak winds wednesday night into

thursday morning. it will be a dangerous situation all the way into the weekend. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. good morning. i'm carrie hall. as we look at our high temperatures, we're going to reach into the low 70s for the inland areas. in antioch, reaching 72. 73 in livermore and oakland as well as san francisco in the upper 60s today. our winds will calm down, but it will also bring in more smoke.

our northwesterly winds will transport more of the smoke into the area from the kincade fire in the north bayment so that's going to be the concern. very unhealthy air quality as the winds came down. then by tomorrow, the winds will pick up. we'll see those winds first increasing in the north bay, picking up to about 20 to 30 miles per hour. even higher in some of the hills. but it doesn't look like this upcoming wind event will be as strong as the one we just had. still, we already have these fires burning, and this could also fan the flames and make things spread in different directions than we've seen previously. going into the rest of the forecast, we'll see these couple of low-pressure systems that's given us the gusty winds start to move away as we go through the rest of the week. and then as we go into the weekend, some much nicer weather will be headed our way. so we'll be watching all of this, and we'll come back to the "today" show and also continue to stream on nbcbayarea.com.

♪ good morning. 7:26. i'm marcus washington. here's the latest from the fire burning in kincade. as you can see right now, the smoke still billowing from that fire. 66,000 acres have burned so far. 112 structures damaged or destroyed. of those, 50 are homes. three are commercial buildings, 80,000 structures are still talented right now. containment still only 5%. firefighters believe it will take until november 7th to contain this fire. there are dozens of schools shutting down today because of smoke and power outages. let's get the latest conditions on the weather from meteorologist kari hall. >> the smoke spreading into the bay area. our air quality will be

unhealthy today. a spare the air alert. you'll want to make sure you limit your time outside. temperaturewise, we're heading into the upper 60s and low 70s as our winds calm down. the shift in the wind will carry in more smoke into the bay area today, and then we're going to see a shift in the wind going into the next couple of days. by tomorrow evening, our winds are coming out of the northeast at about 25 to 35 miles per hour which, of course, could spread that fire even more. going into the rest of our forecast, it will be breezy, and at times really gusty going into tuesday evening into wednesday. and then it does calm down with some better weather for the end of the week. let's get an update on the commute from mike. at the bottom of the screen, we are looking at 101 northbound at blossom hill. a crash blocking two lanes. highway 1, traffic control between pacifica and half moon bay. there's a power issue with the signals. so they're doing traffic control there. 101 southbound, we have a crash getting out of san francisco and a trash at the bay bridge, actually before the bay bridge

the president announced yesterday that a strike on his hideout had killed him, the mission pulled off by a hundred special operations forces in eight helicopters. those who study extremism say the jihadist method is likely to live on and his followers remain a threat in iraq, afghanistan and beyond. former democratic u.s. representative john conyers, one of the longest serving members of congress has died at the age of 90. conyers who represented michigan, passed away in his detroit home on sunday of what appears to be natural causes he was first elected to the house in 1964, a civil rights icon who cofounded the congressional black caucus his 53 year run came to an end after allegations by employees of sexual misconduct and verbal abuse. he denied those allegations but eventually stepped down citing health reasons he is survived by his wife and two sons. back to the raid that killed

the leader of isis reaction from american families who lost loved ones, including the father of a humanitarian worker who the operation was named after. senior international correspondent keir simmons has that part of the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, moments like these with the focus on the bravely of american special forces and the political back and forth, we too often forget to listen to the families of those whose loved ones died today, they are praising the military and thanking the president, while saying that this story is not over >> the raid that left al-baghdadi dead was named after a young woman murdered by isis. >> after kayla mueller, after what she suffered. >> our innocent daughter, held her for 18 months, she was tortured, she was held in solitary confinement. >> aide worker kayla mueller was 26 from prescott, arizona, she went to syria to help the suffering.

she never came out. >> ultimately she was taken as al-baghdadi's bribe, not by her own will, raped and ultimately killed by either baghdadi or someone in his organization. that's the question that we're trying to get answered >> her parents know little of what happened in her final months, how she died, or even where her body is. questions they put to president trump when he called yesterday >> he didn't cut us off. he let us speak. he's bringing it up tomorrow in a meeting. because he didn't -- hadn't heard what we told him. >> in 2015, kayla's mother talked to savannah about her feelings surrounding her daughter's decision to go to the region and help. >> a long time ago, i accepted that i can't control my kids i just got to put her in god's hands and let him take care of

her. >> reporter: another victim of baghdadi's bloodthirsty jihadist was journalist james foley killed on camera by an isis gang. >> al-baghdadi ordered their brutality and torture. >> his mom has fought to see alleged members of the gang brought to trial. >> what do you think james would say today? >> jim did not like violence, and i think he would want our country to show how justice is best served through our court of law. and i think that's what he would most want to see. >> and then there are the families of at least 12 american hostages still missing in syria. like austin tice from texas, his parents speaking to savannah in 2018. >> what's your next step what keeps you hopeful >> yeah, well, we know he's alive. and we're sure he wants to come home >> keir, all of these families have been through so much. they all have different desires in this situation. is there anything they agree on and what they want to happen next

>> reporter: that's right, savannah, they don't inevitably all have exactly the same opinion. kayla mueller's family very much want her body to be found. they are very much in praise of president trump. and honestly feel as if they were let down by the obama administration when kayla was kidnapped. james foley's mom on the other hand says that she wants america to keep working to find the hostages and not let this success take away the focus from fighting islamic extremism you know, savannah, and i know you'll agree with this, when you have spoken to the families, you are struck by their strength and faith and by their belief in american values and particularly that means what they will say is that they want to see these people accused of being members of isis brought to a court values isis held because they believe that is the way to display american values in opposition to the kind of values isis held savannah. >> and they're vigilant, so
