8:38 am
we are back now with an update on kevin hart's road to recovery from that terrible car crash. >> yeah, it happened almost two months ago now it left him with serious back injuries, and now he's letting fans for the first time get a glimpse at his long road back. sheinelle is here with more on that good morning. >> good morning to you guys. hart posted an emotional video on his instagram page, chronicling his painful recovery physical and emotional after that near fatal accident this morning, a powerful and poignant new video from kevin hart giving fans insight into his long road to recovery for the first time since a horrific car crash. >> when god talks, you got to listen i swear life is funny because some of the craziest things that
8:39 am
happen to you end up being the things that you needed most. >> hart who had surgery for multiple back fractures shows himself in the hospital bed needing the help of several nurses and a walker to stand up. he has seen wearing a large back brace in portions of the video. >> i honestly feel like god basically told me to sit down. you're moving too fast, you're doing too much. >> throughout the video, hart appears to be slowly regaining his strength, doing intense physical therapy that includes weight training and pool workouts. >> after my accident, i see things differently i see life from a whole new perspective. my appreciation for life is through the roof >> sounds like the passenger is stuck in the car the driver is out of the car but he looks a little hurt i think the top of the car is crushed. >> in september, hart was a passenger in his own custom 1970 barracuda. the muscle car driven by a friend rolled into a ditch, crushing the roof and shattering

the windshield, behind the wheel, jared black who also suffered back injuries black's fiance, fitness trainer was in the backseat but not injured. hart was able to escape the hart was available to escape the record and get to the nearby home. >> did he get treatment originally from when he was injured? did he go to the hospital? >>, no, not at don't take today for granted because tomorrow is not promised more importantly i'm thankful for god. thankful for life. >> sheinelle, do we know when he's expected to make a full recovery >> he was with his doctor in that video and as you see there, he was talking to hart saying it could take a year before he fully heals. hart went on to say whatever the recovery is, he's in no rush i was listening to a sermon a

8:44 am
a critically acclaimed show. now a film adaptation on netflix. kerry plays a mom anxiously looking for her missing interracial son in a south florida police station take a look. >> my son is missing now you're telling me he's in custody. >> no. >> he might be. >> we don't know that yet. >> we don't know anything yet. >> we don't know much. that is my point. >> is my son in custody or not. >> you're going to have to be patient and wait for the liaison officer. i completely understand your concern. >> respectfully, officer, i don't think you do. >> ma'am, i have kids too. >> do you? >> how old are they? are any of them black? >> that's all you need to see. even that clip took you back, didn't it, to that moment. >> it did. this project is so meaningful to me it's so important. it's like my baby. it's really been such a ride. >> you also call this possibly the most challenging role of your career.
8:45 am
what made it so? >> i think, you know, i'm balancing two threads of this character, one, you know, to bring kendra to life, i'm really thinking a lot about being the mother of black children and what it means to raise kids of color and the complexity, anytime you become a mom, it's such an act of vulnerability, but that's complicated when you are the mother of a kid of coloe dangerous situation. and then because the systems are at work to really put your kid in a more dangerous situation. and then i was also so focused on what's happening in this country right now, and what's been happening, really, from emmett till to philando castile, we have had victims of state sanctioned violence in the community and holding on to that fear and pain, and bringing it to life. >> there's a line in this production where the police officer is asking you for a description of your son, and the questions he asks you are does he have any tattoos, and does he have gold teeth. >> and does he have a street name.
8:46 am
>> does he have a street name. >> yes >> so much of what i think the piece is about is about unconscious bias and how we make judgments about people, and everybody does it. my character does it the white cop does it. we're all kind of operating on our own prejudices and assumptions and i think it's one of the thing that's so smart is everybody who watches it has a moment where you feel like you see yourself and you recognize your own belief system but you also get surprised by really taking the time to hear how somebody else thinks and walking in somebody else's shoes. >> now, thankfully it's going to be on netflix. >> so everybody can see it. >> tons of people can see it, no matter where you are, no matter how much money you have. >> i was thinking to myself, does it make me feel like the problems are unsurmountable or do i see light at the end of the tunnel, what do you think. >> i feel like this film begins when the credits roll at the end because this is a story about how we have the conversation,
8:47 am
how we cross these divides and be able to talk to each other about these really personal feelings and i think the film really gives us an opportunity to be able to talk about stuff that people find it hard to talk about. you know, we all watch the cable news networks that make us comfortable and talk to people who have the same belief systems we have. you see four very different characters holding on to four different belief systems in this film, and yet they are talking to each other, and there's a great discussion guide that we developed, with opportunity agenda.org, you can go and the link is at the end of the film, and it's a guide to help you talk about all that comes up in the film >> and you're a mom of three. >> i am. >> what are the ages again. >> 13, 5 and 3 >> you're very private with your family which i completely respect which is awesome it did shock me a little when i read somewhere, kerry washington gave out her phone, she wants people to tweet her or call her. >> text me.
8:48 am
>> is that a real thing? >> it is i'm texting with many thousands of people. you know, i love social media. it's been a real game changer for me but i also was looking for a way to have a more direct exchange with fans. >> what did you find what are they asking. >> it's really interesting it's a really great way to be in community with people, and to feel like we don't have intermediaries, we can just one on one text each other and be, i don't know, i just feel like i'm always looking for ways to make sure that i'm staying connected. >> i feel like you're such a grounded person. i actually watched your commencement address that you gave at gw, and it totally filled me up and i immediately googled your mom and dad, i want to see what they're like. >> they're amazing. >> i love hearing the lessons you learned from your mom, but your dad cracked me up he's really funny. >> of all the things i have ever done, i feel like "american son" has had a greater impact on my parents than anything. my mom said when she watched the netflix film, it's so painful for me to watch you be in pain
8:49 am
as a mother. as your mother, it kind of connected us to be able to both hold on and embody and talk about what it means to parent, just the vulnerabilities that every mom feels. or every dad you know, there's that thing barack obama says, having your heart outside your body walking around, and for me, i'm getting to now explore themes of motherhood in my work, even though olivia pope chose not to be a mom, which i very much respect, but now in "american son" and soon i get to explore what it means to be a mom, and in particular what it means to be a black mom, what that means, how it looks, what it feels like >> we appreciate you this is such a powerful piece. it's called "american son. it's going to start streaming on netflix this friday. >> friday. >> kerry, thank you so much. we appreciate you coming now over to savannah and carson. >> kerry might want to stick around for this. we have mack o lanterns. and hannah hart and her drunk

guys. >> the kids would love to do this. >> what's this cocktail? >> basically the whole idea of "my drunk kitchen holidays" is to embrace the art of celebration and savoring, when it comes to the holiday season, i don't know about you guys, but i get really stressed out, and it's always like you're disappointing somebody, right, so might as well start figuring out how to cope with the holidays all yearlong, you know. >> these are vampire fries, what's special about these. >> i eat and drink a lot more during the holidays. >> the holidays can be a difficult time stressful, so shouldn't we treat ourselves the best. >> your food is project oriented, it's fun. >> it gives you an activity so you drink slower. >> what makes these vampire fries? >> they're covered in garlic >> vampire breath. i love it. and what's the cocktail real quick. >> a smokey margarita, everyone likes it different, why not the option of smokey, savory or sweet. >> the book is out, "my drunk
