winds. could there be relief in sight >> the soldier's story and incredible bravery that saved many lives and earned him the highest honor. >> trick or treaters will hit the pavement for candy the weather could be dicey for some 38 million. bill karins has the forecast "early today" starts right now >> good morning to you i'm corey coffin >> and i'm frances rivera. great to have you with us early this morning unless you didn't go to bed celebrating because there is breaking news from the sports world overnight. for the first time in franchise history, the washington nationals are world champs the nats capped off their unlikely cinderella story with a world series title in a seven-game slug fest defined by home field disadvantage. for the first time ever in any major sport, the series ended without either team winning on their own turf let's get to the highlights. astros jumped out with an early

doors and go in front of the american public. in just hours the full house will vote on a resolution that will map out how hearings will work in the investigation into president trump. this comes as democrats work to wrangle what would be the most high-profile witness yet in the impeachment inquiry. former national security advisor john bolton has emerged as a central figure in the president's ukraine scandal. nbc's tracie potts joining us with the latest from d.c tracie, what does today's vote mean for impeachment inquiry in general? >> reporter: corey, it means it goes forward and it goes forward in a very public way in a few weeks. this vote today is laying the groundwork for what those public hearings will look like. republicans will get to ask questions, but not call witnesses. the trump administration, the president's attorneys will get a chance to be involved as well if these rules pass today but republicans are still concerned, even though this will lay public testimony out there, the evidence that democrats have

been collecting. they still don't think these rules are fair >> the president has no means of defending himself against these allegations. >> republicans are getting to ask questions. democrats are getting to ask questions. it's in an arena involving the intelligence community >> reporter: now, former national security advisor john bolton has been called to testify next week, but his attorney says he won't do it without a subpoena bolton reportedly had concerns about the president's personal attorney rudy giuliani being involved in the ukraine dealings corey? >> all right, tracie, we know you'll stay on it for us thank you. >> we now turn to the breaking news on the west coast where an extreme red-flag warning is still in effect. a few of the larger wildfires have made a lot of headlines, but firefighters have been battling more than 300 blazes up and down the state fierce winds have been ripping across the state creating a critical fire danger that is

expected to continue throughout the day. the most extreme warning is in effect for the los angeles area. that's where crews are battling what's being called the easy fire it exploded quickly to about 1600 acres and forced the evacuations of about 30,000 people it also surrounded the ronald reagan presidential library. here's nbc's miguel almaguer >> reporter: this is what the battle looks like on the front lines, a rage being bling blow h a fire no homeowner can outrun it is incredibly dangerous with the wind it is going right up this ridge here as gusts approach hurricane force tearing through both ends of california, crews are up against the double threat. flames and the winds that fan it suddenly turning day to night. these are the conditions firefighters face in these wind-driven fires. it's not just the flames that are on the move, but these small embers which can spark a new

fire a mile away deadly conditions outside los angeles as residents scramble to flee hillside communities with no time to waste we saw the treacherous conditions with firefighters as the winds hit 60 miles an hour, it's blinding out here look at how fast the flames are moving the powerful winds known as santa ana originate from dry high pressure in the desert, gaining speed while ripping through channels and mountain terrains this is what they do and this is what they sound like >> sounds like hell was breaking loose. this thing was just coming apart. >> reporter: and it was. firefighters on their heels playing defense and losing ground >> the santa ana winds are a beast of its own almost at its mercy. >> reporter: it's the most extreme wind event in the last decade, and it's not over. >> crews are trying to hit this fire from the air, but there's little they can do to slow it

because the winds are so strong. they can reach upwards of 80 miles an hour later on tonight but they did find breaks in the weather. the air attack has been a major asset all day long, but it can't beat back all of the flames as they continue to grow. california is under siege, no match for mother nature's wrath. the new realities on the front lines as wind-driven fires take aim across the state the wind is hampering the effort from firefighters they need a break, but that won't come until the end of the week frances? >> a long wait for them. miguel, thank you. >> jeopardy host alex trebek is shining a spotlight on pancreatic cancer. he's been battling the disease since his diagnosis in march in a 60-second psa with the world pancreatic coalition, the 79-year-old said he wish he knew more about how to spot the early symptoms nbc's ann thompson has more.

>> reporter: you will soon be seeing alex trebek on more than just jeopardy. >> in nearly every country, pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a five-year survival rate in the single digits >> reporter: the 79-year-old game show host is teaming up with the world pancreatic cancer coalition in a psa to raise awareness about the disease. he is one of nearly 57,000 americans diagnosed this year. >> i wish i had known sooner that the persistent stomach pain i experienced prior to my diagnosis was a symptom of pancreatic cancer. other common symptoms can include mid-back pain, unexplained weight loss, new on set diabetes, and the yellowing of the skin or eyes. >> reporter: since revealing the diagnosis in march -- >> i'm going to fight this >> reporter: -- trebek shared his roler coaster ride of hope and then heartache, now wearing a wig and struggling with his speech as he endures more treatments, yet grateful for each day

>> i've lived a good life, a full life, and i'm nearing the end of that life >> reporter: but by no means quitting >> together we can get it done >> reporter: the unintended flag bearer for a deadly disease, hoping early detection will lead to better outcome. ann thompson, nbc news >> as the chicago teachers strike heads into its 11th day, a deal could be on the horizon in a social media post, the teachers union announced a tentative deal with the chicago public schools a quote, return to work agreement still has to be hashed out. one of the sticking points has been to get the mayor to agree on adding makeup days for the ones lost. so far mayor lori lightfoot has refused to agree to that >> now to the auto industry where ford has reached a tentative agreement with the united autoworkers, the four-year deal includes $6 billion in new investment and retention of 8500 jobs in the u.s. more details of the deal haven't been released but it does come a week after the union ended a six-week strike with general
