us on this thursday morning. halloween may be a little rainy but you don't who don't care, our crowd that's outside. we're going to go out and join them, weather permitting. it looks great. we're hoping to get outside. >> nobody's celebrating like washington, d.c. this morning, the nats pull it off, goes to seven games. historic because everyone won on the road and lost at home. i don't think that's ever happened in world series history. >> we see a lot of red and white there and there was some red and white this morning. craig walked in decked out, he was ready. >> you think he is fired up? all of that just ahead. let's get right to the top story of the morning, the overwhelming challenge facing firefighters at this hour in california. >> one of the big concerns over the past 24 hours, the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley, you can see how close the flames are coming. miguel almaguer is in simi

valley with an extraordinary look from the front lines. >> reporter: firefighters are waking up to a mixed bag. they seem to have things under control. this wildfire that forced 30,000 people to evacuate for the most part seems to be in good condition. we haven't seen any active flames here, but i want to show you pictures of a fire that was burning about an hour and a half away from here. at least five homes have been destroyed. the big concern is going to be the winds here, which could fan the flames all day long. racing across tinder dry hillsides, this is the inferno firefighters feared. in simi valley entire neighborhoods threatened by those powerful winds. 40 and 50-mile-per-hour gusts,

whipping up firenadoes. this is the terrifying view for crews facing the intense heat and flames. not just the flames that makes this wind-driven fire so dangerous. you can see embers are flying everywhere. and that can ignite a new fire a mile away. the blaze surrounding the ronald reagan presidential library, coming within 50 feet of historic exhibits, but sparing the compound, thanks to a steady air attack from water dropping helicopters and fixed wing planes laying down lines of retardant. >> time to go, bud. >> reporter: an intense firefight saving thousands of homes. resources have been stretched thin withmultiple fires breaking out across the region. in riverside county winds strong enough to topple tractor trailers kicked up a fast-moving fire near the freeway. as the flames approached dozens were quickly evacuated from a senior center.

neighbors helping save animals. this horse seemingly running back into the fire to help other horses escape. on the west side of l.a. residents returning to assess the damage after the getty fire destroyed a dozen homes. and in northern california firefighters finally making progress against the devastating kincade fire which has now torched more than 76,000 acres over the past week, claiming at least 266 structures. >> this cannot be the new normal. >> reporter: but on the front lines the most extreme wind event in over a decade shows no signs of letting up. it's a new reality on the fire lines as wind-driven blazes take a terrible toll on the golden state now turning red. the good news here, during the drive in, we saw very few active flames. there are certainly still hot spots, so firefighters will have to keep an eye on that as well

as the other fast moving wildfires burning outside of los angeles, crews will have their hands full as this busy day of strong powerful winds continues across the region. back to you. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. this is a big day in the impeachment fight, set to enter a new phase in the full house, holds its first formal vote on the matter. white house correspondent kristen welker with the latest. >> savannah, good morning to you, it is another critical day in the impeachment inquiry. the full house is expected to v formalize the rules of the road for the process, moving the closed door depositions of key witnesses to public hearings at some point in the future. all as one of the president's former top aides has been called to testify. this morning the house is set to take a major step forward, holding a full vote in the impeachment inquiry against president trump. >> our plan is to start moving into public hearings, wrap that up and present it to the judiciary committee so that they can do their work. >> reporter: if it passes

today's resolution would permit public hearings, allow staff attorneys to question witnesses, and enable the president or his counsel to participate in the proceedings. for weeks house speaker nancy pelosi said a vote was not necessary but she has changed course, in part amid pressure from republicans, including the president who have criticized the entire process, which has so far taken place behind closed doors. >> people are still in a basement in a secure room in the basement trying to make us look as bad as possible but that's not working too well. >> reporter: meanwhile john bolton was asked by house democrats to answer questions behind closed doors next week but his lawyer tells nbc news bolton is not willing to appear voluntarily. still, bolton's testimony could be critical. other witnesses have testified he repeatedly raised concerns about rudy giuliani, the

president's personal attorney and his interactions with ukraine, during his time in the white house bolton often clashed with mr. trump over a range of issues. >> we actually got along very well. he made some very big mistakes. >> so kristen, give us the tick tock for today, what the vote is expected to be. >> reporter: savannah, we could actually see a vote within the next several hours. this is significant because every single house democrat and republican will be asked to go on the record about impeachment. meanwhile, in other key testimony today, tim morrison, a top russia adviser is set to speak with lawmakers behind closed doors, morrison being the second white house official on that july 25th phone call between president trump and the president of ukraine to do so. just yesterday it was announced morrison will soon leave his job with the administration. savannah? >> thank you. craig has now details on that raid.

>> yes, good morning to you. we're getting a first look at that daring operation carried out by u.s. special forces. the pentagon has released dramatic video of the assault as it unfolded. richard engel is in syria with more on that. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. the military released views from above, no close-ups but you do get a sense of how the raid unfolded, while american commandos were on the ground for about two hours. the u.s. military released aerial videos of the raid unfolding. u.s. aircraft shooting a group of what officials said was armed men, clearing the way for the ground assault then delta force commandos move in, calling on those in the compound to surrender. >> those who came out of the building were checked for weapons and explosives and moved away from the immediate area u.s. forces detained and released the other nine combatants. >> others still inside.

>> five isis members inside the compound presented a threat to the force. they did not respond to commands in arabic to surrender and continued to threaten the force, they were then engaged by the force and killed, four women and one man. >> reporter: the isis leader baghdadi was hiding. >> he was discovered hiding in a tunnel when capture at the hands of imminent u.s. forces, he detonated a bomb, killing himself and two young children with him. >> reporter: u.s. troops destroyed the compound, leveling it with air strikes as they left, taking away a spy who kurdish officials say helped lead the u.s. strike team to baghdadi's hideout but if you think killing baghdadi means the end of isis look at these aerial videos with a syrian camp of 70,000 people, many are isis supporters and family members of isis fighters,

conditions here are appalling. hundreds of children have died in the last ten months from malnutrition and disease reacting to baghdadi's death -- this woman said isis will only grow stronger. >> richard, what more do we know about that spy who helped the u.s. forces get to baghdadi? >> reporter: we know a lot about him. we spoke to the commander of kurdish forces here who was controlling the spy and then passing on intelligence to the americans, passing it onto the cia. we know that they've been tracking down through this spy baghdadi for the last five months, this spy was helping set up safe houses and was able to get right next to baghdadi himself, memorize his location and help determine how many people were actually in the compound when it was raided. so he played quite an essential role and there are reports that

new england, severe storms into the mid-atlantic later today as we move into tonight the system continues to the east, bringing heavy thunderstorms overnight into the northeast and moving out through new england rainfall amounts, one to three inches of rain that's going to be the worst of it as far as the trick or treating the hourly rainfall rates up to an inch along the eastern seaboard, the heaviest rain moves in just about 8:00, 9:00 toward the end of trick or treating craig? >> mr. roker, thank you, sir. breaking overnight, a massive fire broke out on a passenger train in pakistan this morning leaving more than 70 passengers dead. officials say it started after a gas stove was taken aboard by a passenger. it suddenly exploded survivors said it took the train nearly 20 minutes to come to a halt after the fire broke out. passengers started screaming for help they say several people jumped off the train to escape the flames. the chicago teachers union announced wednesday night it has

reached a tentative deal with the school district to end the strike that's kept kids out of class for 11 days now. the union says a return to work agreement has yet to be reached. one of the late sticking points has been the refusal by chicago's mayor to add makeup days to the end of the school calendar the new agreement is not perfect but they received many demands include class size caps and a nurse in every school. washington nationals came from behind, won the world series craig, i'm not saying that you need a little concealer on the side, but you were up, huh >> i was, i watched the whole game you've got to give it to the astros as well great game, great series, actually incredibly neither team was able to win a game at home the entire series the nats kept that streak alive

good morning. 7:26. i'm marcus washington. in the last few minutes we just got a new update on the kincade wildfire. it looks like firefighters once again made serious headway in knocking down the flames. that fire this morning is 60% contained, up from 45% last night. about 77,000 acres burned. we did learn of more homes destroyed. the total stands at 141. the total number of structures is nearing 300. all but a few thousand have been allowed to return to their homes. kari hall has been tracking the temperatures. now they're dealing with told

temperatures. dropping to freezing in parts of the south bay. novato 32 degrees and a few valleys dropping even colder. 52 in sonoma. our afternoon temperatures will recover nicely reaching into the mid-70s. the next several days we have highs in the mid to upper 70s and no really strong winds. by this sunday, setting our clocks back one hour, and our nice weather continues into the start of next week. let's get an update on the commute from mike. a gentle build from the south bay and close over the dumbarton bridge. though the exit is closed at castle wood, all lanes open. all that traffic out of san ramone. the rest of the bay, though, north of there just fine approaching the bay bridge.

this morning. >> it caught many by surprise, the ban on political ads is coming as twitter and facebook are fending off threats of misinformation from foreign countries like russia and china ahead of the 2020 election twitter ceo jack dorsey making a big statement, banning all paid political ads on the social media giant. starting in november he wrote in part while internet advertising is very effective for commercial advertisers that power brings significant risk to politics where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions. dorsey is ramping up pressure on mark zuckerberg, who has faced major criticism since facebook announced it would not fact check political ads. zuckerberg citing concerns over freedom of speech. defending the move to lester

of mystery this morning a first look inside the special mission that took down isis leader baghdadi carried out by specialized delta force commandos. >> they are quiet professionals focused on mission above glory or recognition committed people did hard, risky work and did it well. >> reporter: much of what they did remains shrouded in secrecy. the delta force is the top covert combat unit, with a storied history of hunting terrorists and rescuing hostages around the world. >> the requirements for selection are very high. huge demands on their physical capabilities all the kinds of things that scare ordinary people to death these are the kinds of things delta force loves to do. >> reporter: in recent years the force rescued state department personnel during an attack on the american embassy in libya, and captured the terrorists suspected of that attack two years later.

separately they successfully hunted down abu sayef, a senior isis leader in syria there have been failures too. >> a bloody dy in a troubled world. >> reporter: the 1993 somalia operation that would later become known as black hawk down which killed 18 american service members, including five delta force operators. some of the harrowing stories will never be told because the unit purposefully keeps a very low profile. >> the delta force doesn't talk much about itself. indeed if you talk to the army they'll tell you the thing doesn't exist in the first place. in the view of many warriors, me included, less talk and more action is better >> reporter: more is less known about s.e.a.l. team 6 whose mission to kill osama bin laden was portrayed in zero dark 30.

the former navy s.e.a.l. who says he shot and killed bin laden spoke to savannah. >> this wasn't my first mission, probably mission 400 plus. i took the shot, because that was my primary threat. >> reporter: s.e.a.l. teams can operate on land, sea and air, while delta force, an army unit, is exclusively focused on high risk, short term land operations. >> everybody is fascinated about secretive groups we want to know the back story and what nobody else knows. >> that piece was fascinating. part of this elite force was the hero dog that helped take down baghdadi. >> president trump overnight declassified his name. the president can declassify whatever information he wants. it's a good one. the dog's name is conan, and he tweeted overnight conan will be leaving the middle east and going to d.c. to the white house

miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters certainly face a very dangerous and rekarius situation being a southern california. here in simi valley, crews had to evacuate some 3,00,000 peopl. there is progress being made, but conditions could worsen later this afternoon when the winds pick up. and speaking of the wind, they could hit upwards of 60 miles an hour later on today. that is what fanned so many flames earlier this week all across california. we know in some regions today, homes and other structures have gone up in flames during fast moving wildfires. crews will have to battle to keep the flames back as they jump from hot spot to hot spot. they describe it as a cat and mouse game. firefighters doing all they can to fight these flames not only from the ground but also from the air. and that air attack can be hampered at times when the wind speeds arepowerful.
