impeachment, as this really begins the formal process of deciding whether lawmakers want to charge him with a crime at issue, whether or not the president tried to trade foreign aid for a ukrainian investigation of his political rival, joe biden this was nearly a party line vote two democrats defected and every republican in lockstep voted to support the president. meantime, president trump responding in an interview said this is all about winning next year's election. house speaker nancy pelosi, who oversees the house, will over see this process and where it goes, laid out what she believes is at stake here >> what is at stake in all of this is nothing less than our democracy. we all raised our hands to protect and defend the constitution of the united states >> today is more than the fairness of an impeachment

process. it is about the integrity of our electoral process. >> this impeachment is not only an attempt to undo the last election it is an attempt to influence the next one as well >> reporter: now, republicans argued that they don't have a voice here actually, the rules do allow them, their attorneys to ask questions. they can even call witnesses if democrats approve. and president trump's attorneys can participate. so, big question here, what's next first we'll have at some point public hearings, whenever that happens. after the public hearings, the judiciary committee would vote on whether to draft articles of impeachment. the full house would have to approve them if so, president trump would head to the senate for trial frances? >> just now getting started with that phase tracie, thank you. >> a scathing farewell message today from congresswoman katie hill in her final speech on the

we will not be broken. we will not be silenced. >> reporter: jeff bennett, nbc news, the capital. >> police in alabama are searching for a missing woman this morning who they believe could be in grave danger they say 19-year-old anaya blanchard has been missing since last week. blanchard is the stepdaughter of ufc heavy weight fighter walt harris there is a $30,000 reward for any information. here's nbc's morgan chesky >> reporter: the urgent search for a missing college student police believe could be in grave danger >> there is obviously high probability and likelihood there is fowl play involved. >> reporter: 19-year-old blanchard went missing one week ago, last seen on a surveillance video in auburn, alabama police found her car in an apartment complex more than 50 miles away the vehicle heavily damaged. officials say they aren't sure if she drove it there. blanchard's mother said the night she went missing she was with a man she just met. >> it's overwhelming
