right now at 4:30, four people killed, at least four others hurt. breaking news county, a shootin at a house party led to chaos and fear. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to get to breaking news we've been reporting overnight on nbcbayarea.com. "today in the bay's" bob redell live for us outside of the orinda home where all of this was playing out. what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: well, marcus and laura, the police chief let us know four people were killed and four more injured at a halloween house party that took place at a

home up the hill. we're being kept far away from this. witnesses tell our own cheryl hurd, who was out here last night the shooting took place around 10:45 at a halloween party at a house on lucille way. this was a house rented out as an airbnb. we believe there were at least 100 people in attendance. some included students from laney college in oakland. we have video of what appears to be a mother and father at the crime scene tape begging law enforcement for information about their daughter. the mother says "i heard she was shot dead, is she?" the deputy did not have information. there's been no information about the suspects, who they are or whether or not they have caught. we've been in touch with the orinda police department, the police chief trying to get more information. we also reached out to the sheriff's office pio, public

information, still waiting to hear back from that person. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. the shooting victims have always been brought to the trauma center in walnut creek. >> let's go to "today in the bay's" thom jensen outside of the hospital. we understand it's been a little tense out there. >> reporter: we are on the opposite side of where the actual entrance to the emergency room is. we stopped by there, it seemed like a tense situation. there were what appear to be a number of possibly the party-goers, maybe friends and family of some of the victims who have been transported here and a heavy police presence, some contra costa sheriffs deputies, along with police and security. actually guarding the front door, the entrance to the emergency room there. the details are still a little bit sketchy but we did get that confirmation a short time ago from orinda police department that there were the four victims who were killed and at least four victims who were

transported to a hospital. the numbers could be higher than that. we know there were at least six ambulances that responded to the scene there, and we know that some people may have also transported themselves to the hospital. we've also, we understand that three people may be in critical condition, there may be at least two minor injuries, but we have again not confirmed those numbers. orinda police said they're still investigating, they're trying to get better numbers for us. we also reached out to the contra costa county sheriff's department who is also investigating this but we have not yet heard back. we're live in walnut creek, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> a scary situation overnight. thank you, tom. >> we'll continue to follow this. our newsroom is always active even when we're not on tv. we pushed news of the shooting overnight to anyone that has our smartphone app. you can download is for free so you never miss important deadlines. now to the freezing morning temperatures that many folks around the bay area are waking

up to this hour. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those numbers for us and kari bring out the coats. >> once again. we've had a couple of these really cold mornings throughout the weekend. it continues again today as you head out in san jose, and as we look at our temperature trend for willow glen we'll be at 43 degrees for the next couple of hours, before we start to see temperatures warming up. after this cold start, we are going to have a nice day with highs reaching into the mid-70s inland. san jose, antioch reaching 75 degrees and 76 in clearlake, napa, as well as concord. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend, still looks pretty nice. more in a few minutes. mike, you're looking for a problem in oakland. >> not looking for trouble but a problem reported 880 south toward 66 reports of a crash, car hit in the guardrail and folks trying to push it out of the roadway. haven't seen that happen. chp says they're on scene. we scanned the area with our cam camera, no problems. another traffic break near

seventh also cleared from the roadway approaching broadway. the nimitz appears to be moving smoothly despite two crashes reported in the area. other minor incidents out of the freeh way it. we have green sensors from the south bay up into the city or over through the east bay. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. taking a live look at the capitol this morning, we're keeping a close eye on washington. president trump now the fourth president to have formal impeachment proceedings launched against him. yesterday's house vote came down along party lines. so what's next? a live report from d.c. at the top of the hour. closer to home, for many families back in the neighborhoods after evacuating the kincade wildfire trying to regain a sense of normalcy. >> the fire is 65% contained and still 77,000 acres burned but the number of buildings destroyed is higher, now at 349. 165 of those are homes. "today in the bay's" sergio quintana reports that the recent events made for an unusual

halloween. >> reporter: massive bulldozers and fire trucks from all over the state, cutting off the fire lines a sign real progress is made on the kincade fire, now 65% contained. in windsor, residents are returning home but fire hoses in the street and fans in front doors are all signs that the fire burned real close. >> my first thought was the house smells like an ashtray. >> reporter: cameron batcher is unloading his pickup truck. >> moving back in is just a chore. we got everything mixed up. >> reporter: most businesses in town are still closed but cleanup companies are already here. many houses with a garage door open to vent the smoke is a potential customer. >> it's been a little crazy. we have to call insurance and try to get somebody out to assess this, we need smoke damage clearing. >> reporter: on halloween, this street is usually teeming with trick-or-treaters.

lynnette showed me the pictures of parties she hosts at her house. >> from toddlers to teenagers each year. this is the first year we had to cancel, but you know, we're happy to have our homes. >> reporter: there are some neighbors who set up their halloween decorations. >> trick-or-treat! >> reporter: and a few trick-or-treaters went in search of candy, a welcome distraction from the last few days. >> it was emogul coming home and seeing everything how close it was to our house. >> reporter: happy that you, that everything's fine? >> yeah, really happy. >> reporter: sergio quintana, "today in the bay." breaking news out of southern california, where an out of control wildfire, a new one is burning. this is called the maria fire, and it's threatening hundreds of homes in ventura county. it started about qualify last night in santa paola near camario. it burned more than 8,000 acres. right now there's no containment but firefighters say the winds are dying down slightly.

good morning. i'm frank holland at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open up modestly higher this morning. stocks fell yesterday following a weaker than expected report on manufacturing, and reports that china doubts whether it can ever strike a long-term trade deal with the trump administration. on today's watch list, the monthly u.s. jobs report could show how much impact the general motors strike had on the economy. roughly 60,000 workers were counted as unemployed last month. temporary employment is the fastest growing sector in the country over the next several years. a new study from true blue and emsi is forecasting temp help employment will grow by 8.5 to more than 3.2 million jobs by

know? >> it's never too late. >> might be checking them out tonight, friday night football, checking out the band t will feel like fall out there. i wanted to show you the freeze warning in effect for the inland valleys, parts of the north bay, as we are seeing some very cold temperatures there. we'll have several hours of subfreezing temperature this is morning, so that lasts until 9:00. for all of those areas shaded in purple, and so as we look at the bigger picture, we've been talking about smoke drifting in, and air quality, and so as we go into the rest of the day, we're going to see some drifts of smoke coming in to the north bay, as well as parts of northern contra costa county, over toward san francisco, but the farther south and the farther away you go from the kincade fire, we are going to see some improvements in our air quality today. temperatures today very cold. i think we'll see temperatures dipping below freezing in napa and santa rosa before sunrise, which is the coolest time of the day but even in livermore and

san martin we're starting out in the upper 30s. right now a closer look at some of the temperatures in the north bay, not yet below freezing but it looks like we'll get there within the next couple of hours. let's go to the temperatures for today, reaching into the upper 70s for this afternoon. a lot of mid-70s from los gatos to downtown san jose to east san jose and morgan hill reaching 78 degrees. a few mid-70s for the east bay, and a lot of low 70s with martinez and oakland reaching 72 degrees. 76 today in palo alto, and in san francisco we're up to 70 in the mission district and some low 70s, upper 70s as well for ukiah today, in the north bay. so as you're getting up and i know the kids will be dragging out of bed today, as we are dealing with the cold temperatures. it's going to be in the mid-30s and then into the next couple of days we're going to see some warming for the afternoon. so we're just getting in this pattern of high pressure, very dry, crisp air, cold morning temperatures and also warming up for the afternoon.

this high pressure is going to remain, going into early next week. and don't forget this weekend, we're going to remind you like 200 times to set your clock back one hour on sunday morning, and then going into next week, we have more upper 70s in the forecast. mike, you're tracking two reports. >> that's right, but this clock change is a safe one, you can be early, that's okay. looking toward the south bay and peninsula, easy, clear drive. the first crash i'm talking about is 680 northbound in sunol, four vehicles reportedly involved but just getting over just in the slow lane, watch that lane, stay over to your left. no slowing shows up and no injuries reported. the other issue is not a crash but a little fire that was reported highway 24 at the central lafayette exit and that area reports of someone seeing sparks and some smoke and another person said that perhaps they saw a car leaving the scene, where they saw some sparks as well. so we're tracking that in the newsroom and i'll also of course let you know if that's going to be a fire. we'll watch many resources we

have to track any of those reports but nothing so far. over here we have a disabled vehicle, highway 4 at willow pass road, should be out of lanes in the next couple seconds. this crash off the freeway on surface streets. east shore freeway moves smoothly to the bay bridge toll plaza, light traffic, early build for the cash lanes, not a big deal. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 4:51. oakland police investigating a scary incident in upper rock ridge, where a man says he was kidnapped and then taken to an atm to withdraw money. >> this started in front of the man's home tuesday night. according to a next door posting, that man says that he was in front of his home wednesday night when two masked men blindfolded him and zip tied him. they forced him back to his home, and while his family members were asleep inside, they made him grab a wallet, then they took him to an atm, forcing him to withdraw that money. we spoke to one neighbor. >> i'm not too concerned for myself, but when i think about

my wife, walking around here at night, it's definitely concerning. >> in all, the victim says there were three people involved including a driver. police are talking with the victim and getting accounts from witnesses. 4:52 for you right now. two keen-eyed shop owners are now being credited with leading police to a burglary suspect. >> the mother and daughter own cook's junction in lost altos. surveillance video captured images of the man who walked into the back office and stole cash, when they took matters into their own hands after warning nearby businesses they noticed the same man the next day again trying to get to the store's back office. this time, they followed him from the store, and called police. >> scared. i recognized it was a salt and pepper beard, his glasses he wore in the previous day and he also had a cane. i saw him, so we did make eye

contact and he left and we went after him. >> police say the suspect, 66-year-old george nanali is facing multiple felony charges. coming up here on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> you're supposed to get your money back after buying most drinks in cans and bottles but that is not happening and families are missing out on big money. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, "nbc bay area responds," next. but first, happening now, turkey and russia launched their first joint patrol in northern syria, it's part of the cease-fire, ending a brief turkish offensive against the kurds. military vehicles are moving from the turkish side of the border into the area formally held by kurdish forces and while the u.s. military has withdrawn from the area, u.s. troops are trying to protect the syrian oil fields from isis rebels. a lot more news ahead. it is 4:53.

lot more mornings like this, where in the north bay and the valleys we're seeing our temperatures really dipping down to below freezing for several hours so it's going to be another cold start to the day, as we see our temperatures now dipping to freezing in napa, and we'll stay there, between now and 9:00, and so it's definitely a good time to make sure that all of your plants that you're trying to protect are brought in or covered and we're going to see more areas that are going to be very cold going into the rest of the day. we'll talk about what's ahead in the forecast and mike, you're looking now at the tri-valley. >> that's right, a couple of incidents there. everything else is clear, even in the tri-valley north 680 at the andrade exit the crash has to be verified, with no slowing, chp is heading out there. looking at another disabled vehicle around the dublin interchange, waiting for lane information to but no slow sensors. the rest of contra costa county looks great. the fire in lafayette no update. no fire reported in the system. you guys are in the area in orinda. back to you.
