valleys we're seeing our temperatures really dipping down to below freezing for several hours so it's going to be another cold start to the day, as we see our temperatures now dipping to freezing in napa, and we'll stay there, between now and 9:00, and so it's definitely a good time to make sure that all of your plants that you're trying to protect are brought in or covered and we're going to see more areas that are going to be very cold going into the rest of the day. we'll talk about what's ahead in the forecast and mike, you're looking now at the tri-valley. >> that's right, a couple of incidents there. everything else is clear, even in the tri-valley north 680 at the andrade exit the crash has to be verified, with no slowing, chp is heading out there. looking at another disabled vehicle around the dublin interchange, waiting for lane information to but no slow sensors. the rest of contra costa county looks great. the fire in lafayette no update. no fire reported in the system. you guys are in the area in orinda. back to you. >> not too far from there.
5:01 am
breaking news we're talking about, the deadly gunfire at a packed halloween party in orinda. we now know at least four people are dead. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in orinda with new details on that party and the home where the shooting happened. bob? >> reporter: this took place in a residential area here in the hills of orinda, we're down the street from where the shooting took place. the police chief confirmed four people were shot and killed, we believe they died at the scene and at least four more people were injured. we want to show you video, what was a heartbreaking moment, we have video of what appears to be a mother and father at the crime scene tape, this is after the shooting, begging law enforcement for information about who we believe is their daughter. the mother says "i heard she was shot dead, is she?" the deputy told them they did not have any information. witnesses tell our own cheryl hurd this shooting took place at 10:45 at a halloween party at a
5:02 am
house here on lucille way that had been rented out as an airbnb. we believe at least 100 people in attendance. witnesses said some of those attendees included students from la laney college in oakland. we're trying to confirm that information with law enforcement. as far as the suspect is confurmd there's no information who they are, what the description is and whether or not they have caught. like i said, we've been in touch with the orinda police chief and reached out to the public information officer for the contra costa county sheriff's office, still waiting to hear back from that person. reporting live here in orinda, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, bob. 5:02 right now. the shooting victims were taken to the trauma center at john muir medical center in walnut creek. >> we go to "today in the bay's" thom jensen live outside of the hospital. tom, what are things like out there? >> reporter: they still seem to be tense on the other side of the hospital, as far as we know the last time i was there,
5:03 am
albeit it has been a little bit. last time i drove past there was a heavy police presence, sheriffs deputies and police and also security actually guarding the front door in what appeared to be party-goers or perhaps some of the friends of the victims or family members of the victims, a lot of young folk outside the hospital, outside the actual emergency room entrance, so we're on the opposite side of the hospital, where it might be a little more respectful and a little bit safer at this point right now. the details are still a little bit sketchy. as bob said we heard from the orinda police chief who said there were at least besides the four people killed, four people transported to the hospital. we know there were possibility at least six ambulances on the scene at the home in orinda there. some of the victims were brought here to john muir medical center. we heard there may be as many as seven victims although the only confirmed from the police chief
5:04 am
at four. some people may have self-transported themselves to the hospitals, that happens sometimes in shootings like this. three people were in critical condition but that sort of detail has not been confirmed by any official source and there were at least two minor inju injuries. trying to get more confirmation from the orinda police department but also the contra costa county sheriff's department which is also investigating. we reached out to the sheriff's department but have not heard back. live in walnut creek, thom jens jensen, "today in the bay." >> our newsroom is always active even when we're not on tv. we pushed news of the shooting overnight to anyone with a smartphone app as well as those who downloaded our free nbc bay area app. you can download it if you haven't already done so, it is free. you can get the important headlines. it 15:04. later this morning we expect a new update on the kincade fire. for the past few days firefighters have held that line
5:05 am
of containment. as of last night it was 65% contained. the number of acres burned hasn't moved much, still at about 77,000 acres but the number of buildings destroyed is now higher, now 349, 165 of which are homes. now to the impeachment inquiry and house democrats have taken the next step. lawmakers yesterday voting along party lines to approve impeachment probe ground rules likely to lead to a public hearing as soon as next month. last night, house speaker nancy pelosi appeared on "the lay show" with steven colbert, she talked about the vote and the mind-set of republican lawmakers. >> we're honoring our oath of office, there to strengthen the institution which we serve. if they don't want to do that, that's their problem, but it's interesting, because they've been talking process, process, process, because they know they can't really go near the substance. >> president trump still insists he did nothing wrong, and is
5:06 am
blasting the entire process, but he's also waking up this morning as only the fourth president to ever face impeachment proceedings. "today in the bay's" tracie potts reports from capitol hill on what's next. >> the resolution is adopted. >> reporter: with every republican voting against it, and two democrats defecting, formal impeachment proceedings become a reality. >> it's a sad day, because nobody comes to congress to impeach a president of the united states. no one. >> reporter: the house vote paves the way for public hearings to begin, despite their protests. >> and it happened today, it's a sham. >> reporter: republicans will continue to have input. their lawyers can ask questions. they can call witnesses with democrats' approval, and president trump's attorneys can participate. but some closed door hearings could still happen. >> it gives authority for open hearings, but they cannot go back and fix what is a fundamentally tainted and unfair
5:07 am
record. >> reporter: at issue, whether president trump traded foreign aid to get ukraine to investigate a political rival. he says this is all about winning next year's election. >> the democrats are desperate, they're desperate. they have nothing. >> reporter: next, public hearings. >> the house and the american public must see all evidence for themselves. >> reporter: then the judiciary committee decides whether to draw up articles of impeachment. if approved by the full house, president trump would head to the senate for trial. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> president trump's personal attorney, rudy giuliani, is responding to an nbc news report saying that he and his iphone unlocked a san francisco apple store. giuliani sweeted "everyone may need help unlocking their phones including the fbi." nbc news obtained this photo, the report says in 2017, about one month after being named cyber security adviser, giuliani went to the store to get help
5:08 am
unlocking his iphone. security experts say that the visit jeopardized security and someone that close to the president should never allow strangers to access their phones. >> 5:08 right now. this weekend, listen to this, we're all going to get an extra hour of sleep. daylight saving time ends sunday at 2:00 a.m. it's fall which means we fall back and gain an extra hour of sleep. >> mmm. >> my favorite time of the year. >> sounds so good. >> right? >> can we set the clock back a couple hours? that would be nice, but then everybody would be so confused. >> i know. >> so we're going to go, before we go to bed saturday night, of course we'll remind you several more times, but especially if you've got one of the old school clocks like that. looking live in walnut creek as we recover from halloween and the fun we had yesterday and temperatures in the low 40s, heading out the door. make sure you're wearing the
5:09 am
extra layers. we've had weather like this throughout the week, where we start out really cool and we see the temperatures warming up throughout the day, feeling a lot nicer, and then looking at pleasant hill, we're going to see the temperatures there, as you head out maybe heading to the b.a.r.t. station in the low 40s, reaching into the mid-60s by noon. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates and talk about the weekend coming up. mike, you have a look at the peninsula. >> that's right, highway 101 is moving nicely. a couple of brake lights tapped as folks are exiting the freeway. slow for the curvy off-ramp. no major problems for the bayshore freeway. a crash was reported 280 at 92 by the shield, no problem for lanes and i think it's just cleared up from the report in the last couple of seconds. still tracking the crash in sunol trying to get more information for northbound 680, sensors at speed there and contra costa county approach toward the bay bridge, just fine, that little slowing right there past the disabled vehicle as you approach 242, the westbound highway 4 is not a big deal and the bay bridge toll
5:10 am
plaza of course still shows just a light backup, this is actually great even for a friday, guys. back to you. >> thanks, mike. still ahead on "today in the bay," a potential huge boost from san jose's housing crunch. now seeing some serious resistance. coming up at 5:25, the question opponents are raise being a new eye rise condo plan. a new player has entered the game, apple joins the streaming wars. we'll give you the latest. and if you had one or maybe too many of the halloween candies, we have just the right plan to help you burn off those extra calories. don't go anywhere. we want to give you something you need to know. it's 5:10 right now. you're watching "today in the bay."

score a head-to-toe look you'll love and save 20 to 60 percent off department store prices. at ross. yes for less. good friday morning. right now at 5:13, let's check out martinez and our temperature trend for today will be in the low 40s, another morning that starts out cold, but the rest of the day actually looks pretty nice. a lot of sunshine, not much of a wind, and we'll head into the mid-70s today. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend, no major changes, but we'll get a look at what's going on around the bay area, coming up in less than five minutes. looking over here to the richmond-san rafael bridge westbound 580 still holding with very light volume over toward the north bay. the commute is slow building. after last night's trick-or-treating, we went through many streets in fremont, more cars but it's slow getting up in the morning probably for my kids, too. and a very good morning, a
5:14 am
very happy friday. markets have not moved much at all lately. president trump tweeted yesterday the impeachment was hurting the stock market, but the dow fell only about a half a percent. s&p 500 just a few points short of an all-time high. all fridays are fun but jobs friday is my favorite. we'll get the latest jobs numbers and new read on the unemployment rate at 5:30. could be a messy number because of the gm strike and the fires at home. the earliest numbers showed growth in the previous quarter. moments after that number came out president trump tweeted "greatest economy in american history! quogs though when president obama was president donald trump thought 1.9% growth was a sign the economy was in trouble. today apple joins the streaming wars and three new original shows from apple. there are a number of companies doing this, our own nbc will start a streaming channel this spring, but of course, you already have amazon prime,
5:15 am
right, that new jack ryan series started last night, series two. hulu, netflix already had those. as for apple the one i'm looking forward to is the morning show with jennifer aniston as the lead character. lots of big names for what is after all apple's first attempt at a tv show. this is billions the plain old traditional showtime show. the reason i bring it up is the producer for "billions" will shoot a new show based on the uber story on showtime as well. travis calenick and his naughty ways should make good drama. it's based on the book "superpump" by mike isaac. >> i get to be coexecutive producer so i get to be involved which i'm super excited about. look, they are going to finish writing this next season of "billions" and probably going to start working on it and i think i'm going to try to get the rock to play me in the show, which i
5:16 am
think would be pretty true to life. >> mike will join us on "press:here" this sunday. look who we have, reporters from the "new york times," from "the guardian" cnbc, incredibly smart people. we'll talk about mark zuckerberg, big issues how he's sort of the new bad guy even though he donates millions to charity to save little children and is apparently a wonderful family man, but we'll talk about mark's troubles, all sunday morning at 9:00 after "meet the press." if you're wondering what it takes off to burn off the halloween candy calories, to get rid of calories from 20 pieces of candy corn, you can simply play ping-pong for 30 minutes. >> okay. >> 20 pieces, 30 minutes? if you've eaten one reese's peanut butter cup, you have to swim laps for 15 minutes to burn calories. this is a depressing story. why am i reading this? three mini packs of m&m's, you
5:17 am
need to go dancing with friends for 30 minutes. >> i can do that. >> that's good. if you have any energy left from last night we posted the entire list on our home page, nbcbayarea.com. >> dancing for exercise is good, fun. they put fun exercise on there, not just like jogging. you'll have to jog for two hours. >> march in place for nine hours. >> playing ping-pong for half an hour is long. >> not if air winning. >> anything. >> all right, so i've got a great event that i'm going to be doing this weekend, the authors luncheon tomorrow at san jose's fairmont hotel. >> don't run down there today. >> not today, it's tomorrow. it's going to be a great event, this raises money for scholarships for high school students and they invite authors to feature their books and they have some interesting stories, so i'm so honored to be a part of that, and of course i'll have more posts on social media about
5:18 am
that. marcus did it last year. >> a fun event. >> it is nice. i have been going all of these years. >> are there tickets available? >> i'll have to check. there are some tickets left. >> it's a packed event. >> kari will be out front selling some that she printed. >> right. but of course that all goes to the kids for the scholarships. >> absolutely. we've got a lot of fun planned this weekend. as we head out this morning, here is a live look outside in san francisco, we're going to see all clear skies across the bay area, and some very chilly temperatures, especially in the north bay, where we have those freeze warnings, that will continue until 9:00, and here is the reason why, napa we're down to 32 degrees. we'll fall a few more degrees, headed into the next couple of hours. santa rosa at 33, so i think we'll see more mornings like this. you are having to bundle up as you head out, even in san francisco, with some upper 40s there, leading into some low 60s
5:19 am
by lunch time. i think that's still jacket weather even as you get ready to head out for that sandwich. temperatures in the mid-70s for the inland east bay and some mid-70s as well for the north bay, with ukiah reaching up to 79 degrees. still have our same weather pattern with our offshore wind but it's very light. we don't have the low pressure nearby that created that pressure gradient, making the air flow quickly across the bay area. we're looking good for the next couple of days, just some light winds bringing some of the smoke off the coast instead of into the bay area. as we go throughout the rest of the forecast, we are going to see no major changes here, just our temperatures warming just slightly. notice that there are a little bit of rain there to the west of us but it's going to be blocked by that high pressure moving up and around the bay, going into next week, so no rain in the forecast going into even next weekend. looks like it may not be until about the second or third week of november before we see any
5:20 am
slight chances of rain. we're all dry and we're going to see our temperatures holding steady, and we're going to start out each morning inland in the mid-40s. i do think in the north bay we could drop down again each day, into the upper 30s, and for san francisco, no major warming here either. we're going to mostly stay in the upper 60s. mike, you're saying that the bay bridge is right now a treat. >> considering last night's trick-or-treat, we have folks starting to come into the area so a great flow of traffic. we are looking at light build here. one note, a change for the north bay, with great news about power continuing to be restored for essentially everybody, as far as our website said it is in quotes, looking at the smarttrain service has been restored from top to bottom. it remains free until november 6th, so keep that in mind. i'm looking over here because we did have an issue over on the area around sunol 680, as we move out, well, we go right to it right now, 680 moving
5:21 am
smoothly. the issue i was looking at over here northbound 680 as you come up and the report was indeed a stalled vehicle. waze reported it as well. no update from chp, moving smoothly. over toward 580 through the tri-vall tri-valley, we see slowing, moderate traffic showing an average speed of about 32 miles an hour. no incidents in the area. there was something on 680 but it is clear. the slowing may just be because that's where everybody changes lanes to get off or continue past the b.a.r.t. station. nbc bay area wazers is the team you can join and waze is on the phone app so take that phone with you, too. >> thanks, mike. coming up for you, if you've ever driven to san francisco, you know about this or it's happened to you, car break-ins happening each month, hundreds of them. up next, a new team in place and the main neighborhoods where it's going to be focused. and the 49er faithful riding another high, forget the halloween candy. how sweet is this?
5:22 am
5:24 am
5:24 for you right now. new details in last year's stabbing death at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. there's new push to unseal court documents in the case. last year police arrested john cowell after investigators say he stabbed nia wilson at oakland's macarthur b.a.r.t. station. there was already a motion to dismiss the case which a judge sealed. now the non-profit group first amendment coalition is firing back, saying that the motion should be made public. it says more public access and transparency is the best way to reassure that the community and justice will be done. 5:24. hundreds of cars are now seized after a sideshow in gilroy.
5:25 am
it happened at the beginning of last month but authorities are only now showing pictures of the cars. police say there were about 500 cars involved. it happened in a target parking lot. police say many of those cited are from monterey, santa cruz and santa clara counties. the cars were impounded for 30 days. next week, san jose leader also consider cutting or reducing developer fees to build more residential high-rises, but housing advocates are saying not so fast. >> housing advocates held a rally yesterday outside city hall before storming the offices of the mayor and city council. they believe developer fees should be higher and they're calling for stronger rent control regulations. >> it's really disingenuous and dishonest to have this discussion about fee reductions, fees that we put on arbitrarily that need to be reduced, otherwise the market won't build. >> we need more affordable housing, not less. >> the mayor's office says it's
5:26 am
fully committed to affordable housing and recently set aside $100 million for projects. striking back at car break-s in, police in san francisco are dealing with 70 car break-ins a day, many of them oftentimes captured on video. now the city has a strike force you nighting the chp, police and sheriff's departments, and the strike force is monitoring neighborhood hot spots and shopping areas this holiday season. the crackdown will last 60 days. 5:26 for you right now. let's get something straight. absolutely no one thought the 49ers would be undefeated half way into the nfl season. >> it depends on when, but here we are in arizona last night, taking on the cardinals. jimmy g. played great, in the first quarter, down by a touchdown, garoppolo hits george kittle for a 30-yard touchdown. this is nice to see him go there. kittle was breaking tackles along the way, pushing people aside to tie the game at 7-7. in the third quarter jimmy g.
5:27 am
throws his fourth touchdown pass of the game. the niners improve to the 8-0 for the 28-25 victory. >> let's go. >> they are. 5:27 right now. there is breaking news to tell you about a this morning going on coming up for you right as we head into our next half hour. our top story, ever since we came on air. >> what happened is four people dead after a shooting at a halloween party in orinda. we've got live team coverage on what happened, plus updates on the injured. and warriors star steph curry out with his family trick-or-treating, looking good after breaking his hand in wednesday night's game. the news about how long he might stay off the court. you're watching "today in the bay."
5:30 am
right now at 5:30, four people killed, at least four others hurt. breaking news overnight in contra costa county. a shooting at a halloween house party, with hundreds of guests, leading to chaos, panic and fear. all in a normally quiet bedroom community. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we have live team coverage of that shooting, just moments away. but first we want to get to meteorologist kari hall, because it is cold out there this morning. >> that's been the big story for the early hours the past several days. taking a live look in walnut creek we're starting out with chilly temperatures, very dry air but the north bay now under a freeze warning, as we've seen napa now drop down to 32 degrees. we also have some 30s in san martin and upper 30s in livermore but mostly 40s across the bay area.
5:31 am
after this chilly start, it warms up and a nice day is ahead reaching into the mid to upper 70s for many of the inland areas. we'll talk about where the fall colors are really peaking right now across the bay area, and some events going on, that's coming up in about six minutes. mike, you have time to watch a few reports. >> that's right, and so do you at home. you have time at home because the build at the bay bridge even though the metering lights were turned on at the regular time, it's a very gradual build by bay bridge standards. so your feeder routes are also at speeds. stick around, watch a couple more reports and take your time getting to the office because traffic flows nicely but contra costa county. the disabled vehicle north 680 cleared from the sunol area. we may have something new 280 in the south bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news in the deadly gunfire in a packed halloween party in orinda. four people are dead. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live with details on the party and the
5:32 am
home where that shooting happened. bob? >> reporter: laura and marcus, it took place in a house up the hill from a residential area, very hilly here in orinda, not far from highway 24 and camino pablo. this was a shooting, according to the sheriff's office, they confirmed four people dead, information we confirmed earlier with the police department and now they're saying several people injured. our own cheryl hurd was out here last night. witnesses told her the shooting took place 10:45 last night at a halloween party at a house on lucille way, again which is up the street from us. this was a house that had been rented out as an airbnb, about 100 people in attendance. witnesses say some of at tendees included students from laney college in oakland, that's information that cheryl dwayne gained on the scene. we have video of what appears to be a mother and father at the crime scene tape, it's heartbreaking to watch, they're begging law enforcement for information about their
5:33 am
daughter. the mother says "i heard she was shot dead. is she?" the deputy told him he did not have any information. as far as the suspect is concerned we've reached out to law enforcement to get information on that person as far as a description or who they are. they have not reported yet whether or not that person has been arrested or if they're still outstanding. reporting live here in orinda, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, at this point, are they saying is there one suspect or possibly several? >> reporter: they have not indicated one way or the other. i reached out to the sheriff's office and the police department, which by the way the police department does contract with the sheriff's department, so for all intents and purposes, they are the same organization, but no, they have not gotten back to us to confirm whether it was one or more people who were shooting. >> okay, thank you very much, bob, for the latest. he know you're continuing to gather information there. the shooting victims were taken to the trauma center at john muir medical center in walnut creek. >> that's where thom jensen is
5:34 am
this morning, outside of the hospital. you're on the opposite side of the entrance of the emergency room. explain to us why is that? >> reporter: when we originally came on to the scene here, for one thing, there is no parking on the other side, and the john muir medical center security said we weren't allowed to set up on the property, but just out of respect for the victims and family members and friends who it appeared were outside the emergency entrance, and also there was a strong police presence, it seemed loike a tene situation. a lot of sheriffs deputies, police and people guarding the entrance. i can tell you, i just went by the entrance to the emergency room, just a couple of minutes ago, police presence not as heavy as it was, only one police car out there, no guard. it appeared guarding the front door anymore and not as many people outside the emergency room, so it seems like it is easing up a little bit. we do know that at least some of the victims were brought here to walnut creek to john muir
5:35 am
medical center to the trauma center, where they specialize in this sort of thing. at least four victims, as we had confirmed from the police department, from the police chief, in fact, at orinda police department as bob said the sheriff's department oversees that police department, and as bob did, i reached out to spokesperson for the sheriff's department to see if we could get more detail. we understand there may be as many as seven victims but none of this confirmed. three may also be in critical condition. we hope to get more detail as soon as we hear back from sheriff spokesperson. we're live in walnut creek, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> all right, thom, thank you. you know our newsroom is always active, even when we're not on tv. we push news of this shooting overnight to anyone that has our smartphone app, download is for free so you never miss important headli headlines. 5:35. you may have noticed better marked bike lanes in the city of san jose, it's part of a goal of
5:36 am
having zero killed on city streets. >> the city is getting a $100,000 boost to make that happen. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from city hall. what is the money for in this situation, the $100,000? >> reporter: the city continues to spend it on outreach and education but also on safety equipment improvements as well. i want to show you some numbers of why this might be necessary. so far this year, 16 pedestrians died in traffic crashes on city streets, six bicyclists have died in addition to that. last year, 24 pedestrians were hit and killed on city streets and 16 pedestrians died in the year before that in 2017. this is scene video just from one of the first pedestrian crashes in san jose this year. here a woman was hit and killed on santa clara street near tenth street. she was the third pedestrian killed this year. often the victims in these deadly crashes are elderly folks, so with this $100,000
5:37 am
grant from the state office of traffic safety, the city's transportation department will do education outreach to walkers, bikers and drivers with a special focus on seniors, so they know how to stay safe. according to state statistics, speed is the biggest factor in traffic deaths and major injuries, so at the very least the one thing we can do this morning is slow down. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. 5:37 for you right now. the warriors hope to have a timeline today on how long steph curry will be out. he's trying to stay positive after breaking his left hand wednesday night. he shared this video last night of him trick-or-treating with his family, dressed up as buzzlightyear from toy story. earlier in the day he posted this photo, you can see him smiling, cheese, and waving his injured hand. he wrote "appreciate all love, text and support.
5:38 am
be back soon." we hope so. he crashed hard on the floor, in case you missed it, during the loss to phoenix. he underwent a ct scan, specialists are now decidining whether he needs surgery or just a cast. ouch. >> it's so hard to see that video. >> i know. >> you sue hoe his wrist snaps there. >> yes. >> glad he's in a cast. looks like he's doing better. still got to play the dad and go trick-or-treating. >> he got a new laser pointer what his wife said for buzz lightyear. a live shot i'll talk about in a second. ooh, there we go, last year you guys remember from "lord of the rings" the eye of sauer on the tower, the fiery tower was shown with the eyeball. this year the tower is lit up blue, no fire out of sensitivity because we have the massive fires that we watch for. let's say this spooky eye was maybe it was a watchful eye last night over there, but that was going on at the sales force tower, kind of spooky.
5:39 am
