friday, november 1st, 2019. from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi, everybody, good morning, welcome to "today" on that post halloween friday morning. it was a lot of tricks in the weather, not a lot of treats for folks. >> new york we had a tiny window where everything was just perfect, almost like summertime, for others, not so much. >> and it got intense later in the evening. this wild weather our top story this morning, storms and bitter cold forcing millions in the eastern half of the country to alter or cancel their halloween plans and overnight out west a new round of wildfires and evacuations ordered near los angeles yet another new fire erupted overnight. we've got complete coverage. we'll start with those storms out east. nbc's kathy park is surveying the damage out on long island. hey, kathy, good morning.

>> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. mother nature delivered some scary moments overnight. you see on this home behind me, the winds really picked up, uprooted the tree and slammed it right into this home. fortunately no one got hurt, but this morning millions are waking up to a big cleanup ahead. a line of severe storms racing across the east coast overnight. hundreds of thousands waking up this morning in the dark after intense rains and powerful winds knocked out power. in queens, new york, a lightweight roof blown off this building and left dangling. >> all of a sudden, and i heard like a screech and a boom, a hard bang, so i was assuming it was a crash, and i come across the street. i see this hanging right here. so you know, it sounded like a hurricane. >> reporter: in the new york city suburbs, a young girl was left with broken bones after a tree suddenly snapped and fell on top of her while she was trick or treating in her new

rochelle neighborhood. upstate in buffalo, several people were rescued from their vehicle after getting trapped in a flooded viaduct. in pennsylvania, dangerous driving conditions, down south in greensboro, south carolina, severe winds toppled power lines and trees. homeowner ashley scarborough returning home to find her house crushed. >> it's been a lot to process. we got tricked for trick or treat this year. >> reporter: trees also coming down in atlanta, one even fell onto an suv killing the driver. a possible funnel cloud was also spotted in southwest virginia. on thursday, that same storm system turning halloween into a major disappointment, mother nature serving up the worst trick of all to residents in the midwest with snow. >> shouldn't be snow on the pumpkin, you know. >> reporter: how does it feel out here to you? >> cold. >> cold. >> i'm cold.

>> reporter: in denver, extreme cold dropping the temperature to a bone chilling 8 degrees with over a foot of snow this month, it's the snowiest october for the mile high city in a decade. the cold forcing parents to make last minute costume adjustments. >> lots of layers, hats, gloves. >> thankfully the costume came with a hood. >> reporter: and because of the dangerous weather overnight, a lot of the halloween festivities were postponed for either today or tomorrow. and white the rain has moved out of the area, the wind gusts have stuck around. and so has the fringgid temperatures. yesterday in the 70s, but today we'll be in the 50s. back to you. >> we can already feel it, kathy, thank you very much. now to the wildfire emergency out in california. as we mentioned a dangerous new fire exploded near los angeles overnight, but there is some encouraging news. historic winds that have fueled

some of the flames are finally dying down. nbc's gadi schwartz joins us with more on this. hey, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda, just as firefighters thought they had everything under control, this blaze breaks out in the hills of santo paulo. it is starting to die down, but right now it is all when protecting those homes. overnight it prompted the evacuation of nearly 8,000 people. hundreds of firefighters back on the front lines after a week relentless conditions. on both ends of the state crews attacking the flames on the ground and from the air dropping fire retar dant and water and trying to keep the flames from thousands of homes. and in the kincade fire, for one

local group of firefighters, this was a chance ice for redemption. this week for 36 hours straight they worked to protect a community they were unable to save two years ago when the tubs fire burned down 3,000 houses including some of their own. >> we lost the whole area behind us. that was huge this time when this fire came through, everybody came, all hands on deck. >> reporter: for now their fire lines are holding, the winds finally subsiding. but what has created conditions so dangerous they have been given a new name from the national weather service, extreme red flag warning. first an explosive combination of vegetation from the weather hurricane wind gusts and humidity, all that fuel growing under ageing electrical lines that can spark infernos in seconds. on top of that, new houses in hillsides, millions of cars driving near brush, raising the question is this the new normal. >> we hope it's not the new normal but that's kind of what it's heading. >> reporter: the santa ana winds

forcing the evacuation of retirement homes, families, and hundreds of horses. firefighters now recouping their strength for the next round of extreme red winds that could strike at any time. >> we want this fire season to go away. >> reporter: a season that is already seen 6,000 wildfires across the state with experts expecting it to last two months longer than normal. one more pretty alarming note. around 3:00 in the morning, on the other ridge, there was reports of a loud explosion. some sort of boom that was loud enough that it woke people out of their beds. at this point firefighters say they are looking into it, they don't know what it was. but it shows you how dynamic the situation is. everybody hoping that these winds die down later today. >> thank you so much. al will have more on those fires, the storms and the bitter cold temperatures in a bit. now to the morning's other big top story, the president only the fourth president in american history to face formal impeachment proceedings and as expected the vote in the house

was deeply divided. no republicans supported the must have and two democrats broke with their party to vote against it. nbc's peter alexander is at the white house with details, what comes next. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is a significant step forward in the impeachment inquiry. with that vote, house democrats detail the format for public hearings. the stage now set for impeachment proceedings that in modern history have only happened for presidents nixon and clinton. house speaker nancy pelosi on stephen colbert overnight. >> this is about fairness. as i said this is about the con forward with this and no decision has been made to impeach. that's what the inquiry is about. >> reporter: this morning impeachment battle lines, both democrats and republicans digging in for a high stakes clash. >> those in favor please say aye. >> aye. >> reporter: that historic vote along partisan lines green lighting an impeachment inquiry

into president trump. >> this is not any cause for any glee or comfort. what is at stake in all of this is nothing less than our democracy. >> reporter: republicans accusing their political opponents of trying to subvert the will of the voters. >> democrats are trying to impeach the president because they are scared they cannot defeat him at the ballot box. why do you not trust the people. >> reporter: the president unleashing another furious tweet storm saying the do nothing democrats failed the american people. bashing the process as an impeachment scam. >> the democrats are desperate. that's the only way they're going to try to win the election this way because they can't win it the fair way. >> reporter: the vote has a public phase of the process, incoming nationally televised hearings that could sway the american's views whether the president should be impeached and removed from office due to his dealings with ukraine. >> the task before us is a

solemn one, how each member approaches the vote and the days and weeks ahead may be the most important service as members of congress we will ever pay to the country and constitution that we all love and have pledged to defend. >> reporter: president trump's allies insist he has done nothing wrong. >> trying to put a ribbon on a sham process doesn't make it any less of a sham. >> reporter: the president in a new interview overnight defending that ukraine call telling the "washington examiner" at some point he's going to sit down perhaps he said to do a fireside chat on live television, a reference to fdr's radio addresses in the '30s and '40s, he will read the transcript of the call because he says people have to hear it. when you read it, he says, it is a straight call. >> on another subject, the president now changing his primary residence to palm beach, florida. what is that all about. >> the president no longer declaring himself a new york resident.

news known extremists are being watched more closely as isis again threatens the west and names a new leader. after the dramatic u.s. raid on abu bakr al-baghdadi's compound, isis confirming death of its leader, and announcing its successor, abu ibrahim al-hashimi al-qurayshi, western intelligence agencies racing to identify who he is officials say he may be a former senior isis leader who helped lead a branch of al qaeda. in its audio message, isis warned the u.s. not to celebrate baghdadi's death, urging fighters to seek retribution security services on alert, fearing isis cells may look for revenge. >> they may accelerate operations they have in the pipeline particularly targeting europe i would guess and i would be very concerned as the holiday season comes on here, the

of an affair with a member of her staff delivered an emotional final speech on the house floor yesterday and she blasted what she sees as a sexist double standard that led to her resignation. nbc's kristen welker with the story. hey, kristen good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, katie hill was a rising star in the democratic party but she did announce her resignation last week amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, which she denies in that fiery speech on the house floor, hill apologized for her own faults, blasted what she called dirty gutter politics and even took direct aim at president trump. >> i am leaving now because of a double standard. i am leaving because i no longer want to be used as a bargaining chip. >> reporter: in an emotional and at times incendiary address on the house floor, katie hill delivering her first remarks in public since announcing she would resign from congress him who faced an ethics probe for allegations she had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, apologized to those she has let down.

>> to every little girl who looked up to me, i hope that one day you can forgive me. >> reporter: the california democrat who identifies as bisexual also spoke to nude photos posts online, showing hill with a former female member of her campaign. >> i'm leaving because of a misogynistic culture, enabled my abusive ex to continue that abuse. >> hill said her thursday appearance on capitol hill marked the first time she's left her home since the pictures hit the internet. >> i went to the darkest places that a mind can go and i've shed more tears than i thought were possible. >> reporter: but hill says she did not want her presence in congress to become a distraction. >> there is only one investigation that deserves the attention of this country. >> reporter: using her final vote as a lawmaker to approve the proceedings in the impeachment inquiry. >> we have men who have been credibly accused of intentional acts of sexual violence and

remain in board rooms on the supreme court, in this very body and worst of all, in the oval office. >> reporter: and hill saved some of her most pointed comments for president trump. >> i voted to move forward with the impeachment of donald trump. on behalf of the women of the united states of america, we will not stand down. we will not be broken. we will not be silenced. >> reporter: now, nbc news has reached out to hill's estranged husband. so far, no response. her attorneys tell us they are looking into legal action for those leaked photos. meanwhile, the governor of california will need to hold a special election to fill hill's seat savannah >> kristen welker on the hill for us, thank you, kristen. how about we talk football now. there are only two undefeated teams left in the nfl, one of them is the san francisco 49ers. >> seconds left in the first quarter. it's caught, kittle breaks one

i'm laura garcia. we are getting some breaking news in to our u.s. newsroom. eastbound lanes of the bay bridge are shut down close to the toll plaza. >> we're looking at this horrible shot from the camera there. operators are moving it, there is the police activity, closing eastbound 80. there is no traffic getting off of the bridge right now. somewhere between the decline and right here the toll plaza they're running around right now because of that activity. let's show you on the map as we continue to track that from our various views and try to find out exactly what's going on, but you cannot access oakland from san francisco right now. you see the backup solid from treasure island and building as folks leave the city.

the westbound commute is open and that is moving with the distraction. you may see that from the toll plaza, but it's obscured by the buildings. eastbound 80 at the bay bridge getting away from the city and in toward oakland right now locked up the toll plaza with police activity. we hope that will clear up soon but we're finding more details. the rest of the bay moves smoothly so to avoid that commute, come down to the san mateo bridge or go east across that bridge, san rafael in toward richmond. we'll send it over to the traffic flow as we look toward the rest of the bay and the palo alto view, traffic is just kicking in, kari, there's some sun, back to you. >> also is busy here in san rafael, as people are headed out in the north bay, we've been tracking the coldest temperatures in the bay area this morning, now at freezing in napa. it's 49 degrees in san francisco and 44 as you head out the door in san jose, and after this cold start we have nice recovery for the afternoon with highs reaching into the mid-70s. the weekend forecast is looking pretty good, as we get ready to

coasts this morning. in the northeast, hundreds of thousands of people are waking up in the dark after intense ou elec rains and powerful winds knocked out electricity to hundreds of thousands. a lightweight roof blown off the building in new york was left dangling in power lines and in buffalo several people had to be rescued from their vehicle after being trapped in a flooded viaduct, that same system serving snow to people in the midwest. a new fire in southern california, the maria fire near santo paulo prompted the evacuation of nearly 8,000 people hundreds of firefighters are back on the front line after a week of relentless conditions. officials say due to conditions on the ground, california's fire season could last two months longer than normal >> and now to the latest on a massive search for a missing college student in alabama her name is aniah blanchard, she's 19 years old and she disappeared more than a week ago. this morning police have new

evidence pointing to foul play in the case. nbc's blayne alexander joins us this morning from auburn good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning, officials are gravely concerned. they say it's possible aniah could have been harmed now a task force with nearly a dozen agencies from local police up to the fbi are all working to bring her home this morning a desperate search is underway for 19-year-old aniah blanchard. blanchard, a student at southern union state community college disappeared more than a week ago. now police fear she could be in danger after finding evidence inside her car suggesting foul play >> it's overwhelming, but i'll tell you aniah is a very special girl and she loved everybody, and so caring. >> reporter: blanchard was last seen on october 23rd she spoke to a friend by phone just before midnight police released this surveillance video showing her at a convenience store in auburn around that time two days later her badly damaged car was found 60 miles by the

way at an apartment complex in montgomery. >> it is completely out of character for her to be off the grid like this, and not in contact with her family. anytime someone's gone for that long, you have to be concerned for their safety. >> reporter: police say they are exploring a number of leads including the possibility that blanchard was going to meet a man she had connected with on a dating app. >> i can't see my daughter doing that not at that time of night. >> reporter: now a passionate plea from her family. >> she's a special girl and we need to get her home. >> reporter: including from blanchard's stepfather mma competitor, walt harris, the ufc announcing a $25,000 reward, and one of its top fighters, john jones adding another 25,000 of his own. as the search for blanchard continues, a community and her close friends are holding out hope for her safe return >> i just want to say to whoever has her or whoever knows anything, saw her that night, just please, please let us know, and please bring my best friend

within all of that, yeah, it was really important. >> and it seems like you had a sense of style in your genes, your dad says it started when you were 12 years old with the black jacket, which sounds really cool. do you still have the suede jacket. >> a fake suede, even then i was championing animal awareness somewhere, it's probably come right back into fashion, too >> everything comes around, doesn't it you were ahead of the trend in terms of sustainability, and that's always been important to you, so how are you putting it into practice, and how hard is it to do in the fashion industry >> well, it's hard it isn't easy. i think if it's easy, more people would come on board with it i do it in so many ways, my god, the biggest impact that we have is not using leather or fur or animal glues and, you know, i don't use pvc we have just spent three years sorting rayon that comes from sustainable wood, because rayon is cutting down trees, 150 million a year. >> i read a fact this morning

that really shocked me, the fashion industry is more responsible for emissions than maritime shipping and international flights combined i was kind of shocked to hear that. >> we're one of the more harmful industries to the planet and not enough people know it. i think i'm trying to make it, i'm trying to make sustainability feel stylish and sexy you shouldn't notice that i'm wearing an organic jump suit or my sneakers aren't made out of leather, you shouldn't sacrifice style for sustainability, but at the same time we need to get the information through. we just need to make changes we can do it. >> you're doing another thing that i think is really cool, you're just announcing a compression bra, for women who have mastectomy, you lost your mom to breast cancer why was this important to you? >> for exactly that reason i was with a friend a few years ago and she had just had a double mastectomy, and took me back to what my mom went through.

the double mastectomy bras are so demoralizing and you're going through that and you can't feel feminine and sexy, and celebrate your body, and my aim really was the stella mccartney care foundation is to give everyone who has had a double mastectomy one free. >> do you ever let yourself think about what your mom would think if she saw all that you have done and all that you have accomplished >> i don't stop to think about that really because i think i just hold that within me all the time i know that she would be super proud. you're going to make me cry. >> i think about your mom, well, i just told you, i grew up in tucson, and your family had a ranch there, and you have spent some time there, too, and that was a special time with your mom, and she loved the west and loved the outdoors. >> and you know, it's funny coming here, and being in new york, she was a new yorker it's great
