saying in part that easterbrook demonstrated poor judgment by having a consensual relationship wan employee nbc's blayne alexander has more company's future >> reporter: a major shake-up at mcdonald's, with the company announcing it has fired ceo steve easterbrook because of a relationship with an employee. in a letter to all mcdonald's staff easterbrook says the relationship was consensual but acknowledges he violated company policy, writing "this was a mistake given the values of the company, i agree with the board that it is time for me to move on." mcdonald's announced the change, writing in a statement, "the board determined easterbrook demonstrated poor judgment." >> mcdonald's is clearly trying to nip this in the bud before it becomes a huge story >> reporter: easterbrook has been at the helm since 2015 and overseen major changes in the company including moving its headquarters to downtown chicago. he talked about the shift in an interview with cnbc last year.

>> reporter: at least ten people in these six states have been infected with a serious strain of salmonella after eating ground beef. the cdc reports the outbreak killed one person and sent eight to the hospital. numbers that health officials say are unusually high >> there are multiple strains of salmonella and the one that appears to be linked to this outbreak is considered one of the more virulent ones, which means that it's more likely to enter the bloodstream, which increases the risk unfortunately of dying from it >> reporter: investigators haven't zeroed in on a single source or brand. but the majority of people who got sick reported eating ground beef bought from different stores patients were mostly men and between 48 and 74 years old. >> if you're somebody watching this tonight and you're over the age of 65 or young children at home or your immune system may be compromised, you might want to consider waiting until this outbreak is over before consuming ground beef. >> reporter: the cdc is not advising retailers to stop
