the things that matter most happen one morning and one cup at a time. ♪ ♪ welcome to friday morning, november 8th. guess what we have again today. seems a little thicker out there. taking look at a foggy view of the bay this morning. be careful as you're heading out the door. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's get right to that weather this morning. kari, just thick out there. >> all right. so we have some dense fog. so you may want to make sure you're allowing extra time to get to work this morning. as we see the low visibility right now in the south county, down to zero in san martin at the airport there. and we're at about a quarter of a mile in napa. it's been kind of drifting around. so you may drive through some fog and it clears up and you're back in it once again. just expect that as we go throughout the morning. and we're also seeing it in san

jose, low visibility, as well. looking at walnut creek, with some low clouds and we're going to be watching out for that throughout the morning. mike, that's going to have drivers dealing with some really tricky driving conditions. >> once again. so we had that. we had a few days to get used to it, but we don't have as much of it showing up at least on the road weather censors. we see those live cameras and we know it's there. south bay up into san francisco and oakland, neither side of the bay have any major issues. but we have a closure here, highway 4 with traffic control possibly until 5:00 a.m. there was a headon crash on waading over towards sevastopol. i don't know what the deal is with the he that's the case. in the north bay, vallejo and coming in towards san rafael, that's the deal. so we have a fire that destroyed an rv and damaged a

neighboring home. it happened about 1:30 this morning. firefighters arrived to find the rv fully engulfed and the upstairs part of the home on fire. no one was injured and the cause of that fire is under investigation. today will no doubt be a difficult one in butte county. today marking one year since the deadliest firestorm in california history. >> the campfire which leveled paradise. 86 people lost their lives. 18,000 homes and businesses were destroyed. and that fire burned through more than 153,000nurous es a fe. the town of paradise is asking people to observe a moment ofsi. that's the exact time that fire started last year. town leaders will also show off for the first time a newly built community resource center. and today, paradise leaders will help break ground on a new campfire memorial named hope plaza. shares in pg&e are tanking this morning after the utility reported big quarterly losses. the utility cited recent catastrophic wildfires.

pg&e also says it's taking a hit on electrical equipment inspections and power outage refunds. it's projecting a $6 billion loss for the quarter, as it works its way through bankruptcy proceedings. well, the milpitas high school teacher who sparked much outrage after wearing blackface on halloween in his classroom is apologizing. >> and in an exclusive interview with nbc bay area, the rapper he so painfully tried to imitate, the social activist, common, is now responding for the first time. we get more from today in the bay's ian cole. >> there was global backlash for what milpitas david carter did on halloween, dressing up as comm, makeup. >> he said the face makeup was offensive. >> reporter: carter was put on paid leave. he said it was his homage to the rapper, actor, and social activist and that his heart was

in the right place. >> i had no intention to come across as blackface and that my actions were perceived that way and offended so many people, i'm truly sorry i apologize. >> reporter: carter hopes it will now start a dialogue of understanding and appreciating culture. we also talked with common about the episode. he was speaking at a tech conference in san jose. the rapper says he was surprised when his daughter showed him the video. >> my first initial response was like, what the hell? like, what are you doing? like, how could you even think about doing that? >> but common calls this a teachable moment and says he's willing to talk more about it with the teacher face to face. >> and also bring others who can dig deeper into the education of what blackface has come from. i believe in forgiveness. i believe nunsing and compassion. >> reporter: ian cole, today in the bay. >> it's nice to hear from common. 4:34 right now.

new overnight on capitol hill, president trump's chief of staff suddenly faces a subpoena to testify in the impeachment acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney is being asked to talk to lawmakers today. democrats have wanted to question mulvaney ever since he raised eyebrows, saying this. >> get over it. there's going to be political influence in foreign policy. >> many considered it an admission. president trump broke the law, withholding aid to ukraine for a political favor. the white house has consistently defied previous subpoenas and you can expect more of the same from mulvaney. former national security adviser john bolton failed to show up for questioning yesterday. the lawmakers never officially subpoenaed him. today, scott mcgrew will join us with much more in his checks and balances segment at 5:45. 4:35 for you right now. in a surprise truce between san francisco and the nra. the gun cing from a move after they declared the nra a

domestic terror group. they also suggested not doing business with any contractor who is do business with the nra. the nra dropped the suit, citing the retreat made by san francisco leaders since then. but city attorney dennis herrera responded, calling the lawsuit a baseless attempt to silence some valid criticism of the organization and to distract from the ongoing gun violence. this afternoon, san francisco election leaders plan to give another update on the too close to call district attorney's race. as of yesterday, less than 900 votes separated the top two candidates. interim district attorney suzy loftus and deputy public defender, chesa beaud boudin. the new downtown novato smart station is getting a little closer to opening. starting late tonight and through the weekend, the team will test signaling and train control systems along various stretches of the track and the crossing. testing begins at 11:00 tonight.

looking at emeryville, whereime drivers drifting in and out of that fog in spots. it may clear up. but as we take a look in san rafael, looking pretty good here. as we see our current visibility, this takes a look at how far you can see in the distance. and right now in napa, it's only about a quarter of a mile. in santa rosa, it's down to about half of a mile. san martin, we're improving. it was at a quarter of a mile, but it's been drifting as well across san francisco and parts of the peninsula. looking at our current temperatures right now, we're at 47 degrees in santa rosa. palo alto at 50 degrees. and 43 now in livermore. so it's a cool start as you head out the door. once the fog clears, we have some milder temperatures for the afternoon. and we're heading back above normal, as we reach 73 degrees in san jose. we'll see a high of 77 in morgan hill. for thalnut creek and oakland in the upper 60s. and for half moon bay, that fog

lingers. we only make it up to about 57. redwood city reaching 70 and san francisco, mostly in the 60s, but we will see a few spots staying in the upper 50s today. and we'll warm up to 79 in ukiah, while napa today will see a high of 76 degrees. here's a live look outside in san jose. as we're getting dressed, we're seeing still some cool temperatures. you do need a jacket, but the rest of the day, it's short sleeves as we warm up and feel some more comfortable air. and looking at high pressure that remains in control, keeping us dry. and the rain that we can see out there extending across parts of the pacific, as another cold front system moves across thef. it does show a slight chance of rain in the forecast for next friday into saturday. doesn't look like a big storm, by it's at least a little bit of something we can hope for in terms of getting some wet weather in here. it's beeno we'll see that continuing into the weekend. highs above normal, reaching

into the upper 70s inland. morning temperatures starting out in the upper 40s and san francisco a little cold today with a high of 62 in the city. and mike, you have a warning for dryers on the nimitz. >> that's right, kari. we're still in the fog. and we showed this before, our . in fact, most of our cameras show some light low clouds or fog again this morning. that's around the bay for the drivers. but also through fremont where we're looking, right now, over the weekend, there will be closures for the nimitz. northbound, from 2:00 to 5:00 tomorrow morning, and southbound, from 3:00 to 6:00 around the area of mallory and fulton. that corridor, there will be a full closure for some electrical work in the center divide. so do join waze, our team, nbc bay area and warout along with those signs. the south bay and peninsula all moving nicely, but in the east bay, we have a couple of crashes on the nimitz and it may be the same incident between 238 and hayward, we're looking at this patch of yellow.

be careful through there as the hills rise up into the clouds and it becomes a situation. no problem out of the altamont, through the dublin interchange. contra costra county moves great. we'll talk about that in a second, but we still have the closure and traffic control for highway 12 at yano road for an early morning crash. that should clear up in a few minutes. there's contra costra county with that patch of fog across the carquinez bridge. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. 4:50 right now. new details in recent details of a northern california deputy. the deputy was ambushed october 23rd in the sierra nevada foothills. authorities now say two of the men arrested are in the u.s. illegally and were helping guard illegal pot grows. federal prosecutors also say they took orders from someone in mexico. a total of four men are in custody, including the property owner and a man investigators say was managing that grow operation. a san francisco woman is suing wells fargo and her former boss at the bank after she says he raped her. >> that woman says antonio perez

drugged and raped her last year. she worked at the branch at the time in the city. she says that he invited her for drinks even though she was only 20 at the time. perez allegedly got her into a flight club and she says ultimately slipped her a date rape drug. that woman says she was unable to hold a job after the incident and is reaching for compensation. we reached out to wells fargo and it is not commenting on the lawsuit. it is 4:51. the nation's largest seller of e-cigarettes says it will stop selling mint-flavored pods. san francisco juul labs made that announcement yesterday in the wake of a new white house effort to ban flavored e-cigarettes. and it comes days after san francisco voted overwhelmingly to go forward with a citywide ban on vaping sales. congressman mark desdesaulnier banned them. according to the centers for disease control, vaping has
