shooting after four died according to authorities, about 35 people were in the backyard watching a game when one or two suspects snuck in and open fire into the crowd. >> thank god that no kids were hurt because several kids and females in attendance at this party. our heart goes out to the families that were victims of this thing this is senseless violence >> authorities say it's very likely this was a targeted shooting officers are canvassing the area, searching for witnesses and surveillance cameras that may help them capture the suspects. breaking out of hong kong. a fiery standoff between police and protesters riot police tried storming a university occupied by activists. the protesters fought back with fire bombs and bows and arrows, forcing the police to retreat. nbc's matt bradley joins us from hong kong. the protests have really escalated over the last week. >> reporter: yeah, you know, it has. not just in terms of the violence that you're seeing

those images of. also in terms of the frequency back in the day six months ago, because these protesters are well into the sixth month, this was a weekly event, a weekend thing with millions of people on the streets. now in the intervening months we're starting to see the crowds have gotten a lot smaller, a lot more radical, a lot angrier and more violent that's what we saw last night. it was one of the most violent epises i've seen here in hong kong in the months i've been koring this story. we saw what looked like protesters taking over the university one of five universities, hong kong holly ne polytech neck thek over ford days, used it as a citadel, a training ground. they used it to fill up with tons and tons of molotov cocktails, which is what they used to fight back against the police the police launched an attack against that university. that university is still under

we have to hug across the table. >> reporter: the program is called girl scouts beyond bars >> the girls and moms both -- they get to still be a family rr the program started in maryland in 1992, a collaboration with the girl scouts of central maryland and the prison. there's no cost to the taxpayer but there's a huge payoff for the prison. >> they recognize the need to be in this program, to see their daughters in this relationship at least twice a month they don't want to lose that privilege, and it is a privilege. so, it calms them, keeps thein a good place, keeps them out of others who know what it's like to grow up away from mom. >> we can talk more and open up to each other about what we go through. we go through similar stuff. >> reporter: this particular girl scout meeting is an important one. it's the bridge ceremony >> it's beautiful to have these ceremonies and moments to mark time their moms miss a lot of special days in their life because they're in here. >> reporter: getting mothers involved in the meeting is part
