and eighth perhaps as far as ninth street in downtown san jose. here is what our crews saw as they arrived early this morning, about 3:00 this morning a san jose police officer spotted what seemed to be a suspicious car and called for backup. police didn't know what they were dealing with. loud speakers called for anyone in the car to get out, our crew did not see anyone get out but we saw rubber bullets on the ground. the car is in a parking lot for a small office building with signs for a dentist and a lawyer, this is just blocks from san jose city hall and from san jose state university. we did see several campus police patrol cars here, when we arrived, about 45 minutes ago. i did talk with a dispatcher there. they said they were assisting with traffic controls so again, a death investigation has santa clara street shut down in downtown san jose until at least 10:0 thank you, kris. breaking news for you this morning, more breaking news

as much as an inch of rain is expected to fall in some parts. >> a live look all quiet right now but soon going to change. the first of us to see the storm is the north bay. "today in the bay's" sharon c katsuda is live with what you can do to prepare. >> reporter: that's right. there's a lot of talk about the weather, the owner at the station is frustrated he spent on power $4,000 for generators for the possible shutoff and it didn't happen so he wasted he says $4,000 on that but he may need them for the thunderstorms come up this afternoon. ? you're staying put you want to clear out your gutter before the wet weather arrives around 1:00 in the north bnd be in the east bay around 2:00 to 6:00 and the south bay 3:00 to

6:00 a.m. after bone dry weather locals are excited about the rain. >> blackouts, showers, cold, pets >> it's been a rough northern california here and even southern california as well. we could use the rain. >> reporter: local public works departments have been cleaning out debris and crews are ready to respond starting this afternoon. back here live we could see hail in parts of the bay area, snow in the mountains and thunderstorms this afternoon so if at all possible, we're letting people know you might want to take off this morning to get to your destination by this afternoon, when all this mess might start with the traffic. reporting live in mill valley, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you for the latest there, sharon. we are following breaking news out of washington, d.c., where the white house has been put on lockdown. we're now hearing there's been an air space violation, fighter

jets have scrambled overhead. the lockdown remains there, from all the front walkways as well as the lawn was cleared. this is video just to our newsroom showing police at the scene, heavy police presence and of course secret service security. we'll continue to monitor this developing story. 6:07 and developing this morning in southern california, we want to take a live look in santa barbara. this is still at the white house but there we are in santa barbara right now, hundreds of those homes are evacuated from an out of control wildfire, burning in the foothills. late last night, that fire had burned more than 3,000 acres in the area around marcos pass and painted cave. highway 154 is now closed and so far no reports of any homes destroyed, that's good news, but people there spent a nervous right hoping those conditions would improve. of course the strong winds, something that we're going to experience here in the bay area, down there

something thrown or shot just south of highway 101, investigating another car hit by with thethehp is stepping up pa before osomeone gets killed. the latest incident yesterday before 5:00 at night, a fan with a family of six driving 101 southbound near the big red barn if you're familiar with that area, when something hit the van. it tore through the rear driver's side window. luckily no one was hurt, but as that thanksgiving travel is ramping up, some people are actually trying to change their plans or telling relatives to avoid the area. >> his family coming but we've told them to avoid that road. >> really? >> i'm surprised that nobody's caught him. >> this is the fourth incident there since friday. someone threw a rock at the carmel high school football team bus in the same area as they were traveling to san jose. one student got cut by the glass. a live look this morning at sfo, this is one ofea 20 airports nationwide, happening
6:09 am
today, union protests are planned, catering workers are planning to demonstrate in part against american airlines, but more significantly, the companies contracted out to air carriers for onboard food. union leaders tell "forbes" they don't expect protests to disrupt a busy day for air travel. today's sfo protest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. back to that incoming storm that we're going to have here in the bay area where the conditions are expected to really intensify conditions on the coast. this is video you're looking at now from overnight from the pacifica pier. this is one of many places expected to be under high surf advisory, beginning at 7:00 tonight. breakers from 22 to 27 feet are expected from point reyes down through the peninsula to monterey. that advisory is expected to last until 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. all right, so we're getting ready for the storm, hopefully people have cleared some of their gutters as well. sounds like it's going to be a
6:10 am
big one. >> yes, what's driving those waves along the coast will be near hurricane force winds off the coast, and so that's the reason why we do have that high surf advisory and the breakers up to 27 feet. a very significant storm as it approaches and we'll also bring in some gusty winds for the bay area. here we are timing it out, hour by hour, we see the rain moving into the north bay, by late this morning, even some snow for the interior mountains farther to the north. we'll see this working its way into the bay area, with some heavy rain, right at about 7:00 moving into palo alto, pleasanton and in san jose, and we're going to see that first initial wave come along with some high winds that could gust up to 50 to possibly 60 miles per hour. we see more scattered activity going into tonight, as well as tomorrow, but there's also a chance of some more storms, so we'll detail that along with sierra snow coming up. mike, you have a follow-up on a crash near sfo. >> we' detail as soon as we heard from chp. a smooth flow but look at the
6:11 am
big view, pretty good for the speed sensors, and we'll predict what you can expect coming down through the east bay come up. right now i wanted to talk about southbound 101, just before the millbrae avenue exit, you see a little bit of slowing, there was a crash three vehicles involved and one may still be in lanes that will cause a bit of slowing right here, marked by sfo. the airports will be busy, parking lots watch the on and offramps. bay bridge toll plaza slowing, waze we have a report from our wazer we thank them, join nbc bay area wazer and contribute to the knowledge. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> 6:11. if you like the classic board game monopoly but find yourself thinking i wish this could take longer. well, we've got good news for you. >> i don't know if i ever wished that. but the world's longest board game is getting even longer. the new edition is generating a lot of buzz. we're going to talk about physics this morning in business and tech but i promise to make it fun and interactive this

winds, and rain gets heavier this evening. i'll detail that, and we'll talk about what's going on in the sierra, that's coming up in about five minutes. looking at the san mateo bridge, west 92 on the span, is fine. you may have an issue getting here, getting to the san mateo bridge a crash is reported near the toll plaza, we'll sort that out and also if you're headed past the san mateo bridge we'll give you some idea of what to expect, coming up. and some good news coming out of washington this morning, we were talking about the airborne threat in washington. there is according to msnbcl cl everything is going to be okay. markets will start at new all-time record highs, there is word china and the united states at least talking to each other on the phone. sounds like they're in the first steps of the trade deal. traditionally a slow week this week. the markets will be closed on thursday, with a shortened trading day on friday. four people have been fired from google accused of accessing company information they should
6:16 am
not have. one led a protest at google's offices on friday. our bob redell has been looking into that, and has live reports from google throughout the morning. redfin did a study and discovered people are staying in their homes longer. this means fewer homes are up for sale nationwide. part of it is seniors, deciding to age in place. many states offer property tax reductions for seniors, so they stay in their homes. it's a good example of what sounds like a fair and decent thing to do, hurting the housing market. example of that. many economists say rent control discourages building, which drives prices up. elon musk says he knows why the windows broke on the cyber truck. you may recall they threw a steel ball at it, in much of a disaster. musk says this, hitting the truck with the sledgehammer earlier loosened or damaged the windows. he says they should have done the window demonstration first, and then did the sledgehammer.
6:17 am
and ford is calling shenanigans on a tesla demonstration where a cyber truck pulls a ford f-150 uphill though the ford is trying to drive the other way. ford and other commentators say this isn't about engine power. it's a matter of traction. physicists would call this friction. a tug-of-war is never about power. it's about mass, making the ford heavier would actually help it, if you put some weight ea wheel, fohe written it up force of friction, times the coefficient of friction and force and you increase the n and the ford wins. >> pretty interesting. >> i can goingle that again if you'd like. >> that's okay. we want people to watch. >> science with scott mcgrew. all right, so if you need a game to keep your family occupied for hours, and hours, look no further. there is a new version of monopoly and it's called the longest game ever. here is the new rules. there's no bankruptcy in this
6:18 am
one. the game doesn't end until someone owns every single property and there's only one die instead of two dice. the game will end with someone probably flipping over the board so i don'tow no bankruptcy. >> so really no changes? all you have to do is take away one die and it's the same game? >> no bankruptcy, you've got to sell everything on the board. >> and there's another ring, so you have longer until you pass go. >> and more to buy. >> already such a very long game. >> you longer. >> i want to be the banker. >> that may be something over ts because it will be much cooler off and on rain, and then of course thanksgiving day we want to you get outside and enjoy it. we're going to start out with this storm approaching, as it continues to move closer, now take a look at the wide swathe of clouds and the rain, as it approaches the coast. so it's going to take a while before this whole system works its way through the bay area,
6:19 am
we're already starting to see that snow coming in to far northern california and some of the upper elevations around crescent city down to eurekeure. for the bay area still all dry but we'll be using our storm ranger, and mobile doppler radar. we have it parked on san bruno mountain so scanning around the bay area it will give us the most detained view of all of the rain as it moves into the bay area. you can track it, too, on the nbc bay area app. we have the same tools on your smartphone. we're going to see as we go throughout the day mostly cloudy morning and here we are at 11:30, seeing that rain moving in the north bay, some snow in our interior mountains in the north and we're going to see some off and on showers through 3:00 to 4:00, and then approaching parts of 7:00. notice how bright this is. this is going to be some heavy rain, with some really high winds, at times 50, even possibly 60-mile-per-hour winds, so make sure everything around the house is secure, and we're
6:20 am
going to see the potential of some spotty showers and some thunderstorms continuing into tomorrow, with some low elevation snow, and we are going to see the possibility of getting anywhere from about three quather e quarters of an e east bay and maybe over an inch nap in san anselmo. for the sierra, planning to drive to or through the sierra, at noon we're starting to see the snow falling down, starts out light but quickly gets heavy and by this afternoon, all bets are off. they may be closing some oo nex. so we're going to see some breaks here in the bay area from the rain, and the storms on thanksgiving day and friday, we're looking pretty good but it's just going to be chilly and breezy. headed over to mike now you're updating the crash on i-80. >> the upper east shore freeway. traffic is lighter today as we expected but we did have that burst toward the toll plaza, and we had slowing here through pinole and hercules, reported from our partners, one of our friends on nbc bay area wazers
6:21 am
and the community out there, that is cleared up and slowing, quick recovery. the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza and building over there for richmond so that's when we expect to see and expect slowing highway 4 which you see there as well. partners at waze are talking about slowing here as well as our chp reports where the slowing has cleared the last few minutes. chp reports the crash south 101 at millbrae avenue just past sfo but judging by the speed sensors, everything should be okay once you get there. we'll keep tracking that and the peninsula just starts to build here, more slowing on el camino and not highway 101. san mateo bridge an earlier crash watching for the activity as three vehicles have to get over to the shoulder, slowing you from the 880 over to the toll plaza but it's okay on the span, and also waze predicts more slowing starting now up to about 7:30 we're holding steady at that point and things will ease up for the morning commute through that stretch of 880 and the south bay looking just fine except for santa clara street, still closed and continued from

straight out of "oceans eleven" movie. thieves made off with nearly $1 billion in royal jewelry from the world renowned green vault in dresden. both suspects were caught on surveillance video earlier yesterday. the crooks started a fire that led to a big power failure that disabled security alarms. a car matching the getaway vehicle's description was later found burned in an underground parking lot. kelly clarkson loves education. >> and today on her talk show giving a big shout out to two colleagues from right here in the bay area with a very special connection. meghan soldadi was a kindergarten student in heidi dearinghoff's class. she said the experience influenced herself to become a teacher at the exact same school. dearinghoff is the school's principal and knew that soldadi was destined to follow in her footsteps. >> when i was teaching, meghan
6:26 am
would come back on half days and she was just coming in for a quick little visit but i knew better, i put her to work trying to inspire future generations so she was working with students, hanging up bull pin boards doing great kinds of things for me. >> what a great leader there. you can hear more about their amazing connection and the big event, the pair will soon attend on "the kelly clarkson show" this afternoon, and ellen comes on at 4:00, you can set your dvr so you don't miss it. >> cool to see. still ahead much more local news, including the growing tension at google. four workers fired but there is a dispute about why. the protests that followed and the concern google is citing, we'll talk you through it all. plus another check of the forecast, kari is tracking high winds, cold temperatures and rain headed to the bay area. we'll talk about the timing for the first significant storm of the season.
6:29 am
and welcome back to you on this tuesday morning. of course, one thing we're talking about, you see it right here, the map and you know we'll talk about rain coming our way. we are also talking about snow in the mountains and strong winds, just a busy day weather wise but don't you worry, we have you covered on all angles. thanks for starting your morning here with "today in the bay." i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's talk about that forecast right now. meteorologist kari hall, a lot of people traveling this week, too. >> this is a huge travel time, one of the busiest of the year and to have a significant storm coming in, is really going to throw a wrench in a lot of people's plans. it's moving very fast and so, so far we have a couple more hours to prepare, but we are seeing that rain moving in to far northern california, and that will be approaching the bay
6:30 am
area, but we already have our storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar powered up and ready track this storm. we're going to be tracking this red scan and seeing a storm from very detailed view as a result, so we're going to see that rain first approaching the north bay, right at noon we're seeing the scattered showers, and even some snow coming in, and that spreads from north to south going into the afternoon, and this evening. we'll talk more about that coming up, and mike, you're seeing the traffic jamming up at another toll plaza. >> and by another, i mean other than the richmond toll plaza and the oakland toll plaza that we see on this map. you notice that overall contra costa county looking a little bit lighter with highway 4 still slow. we approach thanksgiving we have lighter traffic flow, fewer people there but some colleges and other schools that have session right now and a jam up approaching the san mateo bridge toll plaza, a crash involves three cars there and we're still having that taken care of. no problem other than the slowdown off of 880. the dumbarton bridge a great alternate if you can choose between the two and other than that, the freeways are moving smoothly in the south bay, we
6:31 am
have one disabled vehicle on 101, we'll check on that, but we also have that crime investigation on a major city street that's santa clara, that's coming up but first you guys are talking about breaking news in the capital. >> a lockdown has been lifted at the white house and the capitol building this morning. we have a live look from washington, d.c. this is after a plane entered restricted air space. fighter jets skremblecrambled t white house area, pedestrians held back. no word on why the plane violated air space rules. so far what we know so far is the lockdown itself has been lifted at the white house this morning. 6:32 right now. now back to that breaking news happening right here in the south bay and confirming there's been a death investigation overnight. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been following this story for us, lin. kris? >> reporter: hi there. we know somebody died. we don't know who that person is and don't notesi east santa cla

street closed between seventh and eighth and perhaps into ninth, the 900 block. santa clara will remain closed until at least 10:00 this morning. here is what our crews saw as they arrived on scene this morning. that was about 3:00 this morning, that a san jose police officer spotted a suspicious car and called for backup. there was a swarm of officers who arrived, including an armored personnel carrier. over a loud speaker, officers called for anyone in that car to get out. our crew did not see anybody get out but we did see rubber bullets on the ground. the cars in a parking lot for a small office building on santa clara with signs for a dentist and a lawyer, this is just a block from san jose city hall and from san jose state university. in fact we did see several campus police patrol cars here when we arrived about 4:00 this morning, about an hour or so ago i talked with a dispatcher who told me that san jose state police were just assisting with
