the macy's parade set to begin in about an hour and a half. of course you can watch it here this morning. there's snoopy. there's a question whether the balloons can fly. we'll have a report in about 15 minutes. >> yeah, we look forward to that seeing whether it actually happens. the wind is so crazy there. it is freezing here. my defroster actually had difficulty this morning. >> if you're near the sheltered valleys or to the north or even around the coastline, we have the frost really taking over your windchill this morning. you may need extra time if you have to do the last-minute errands. look at the 30s we're waking up to in the north bay. 34 degrees. 35 in napa. 37 in palo alto. santa cruz 38. san martine 38 degrees. your temperature trend for the

afternoon will be in the low, low -- pretty low 60s in some parts. by the afternoon a nice shift and more sunshine today. a welcome sight especially after a very stormy two days we've had here in the bay area. so now we're going to get a check of the roads and see how that's doing. that's not it there. let's see the east bay drive times. ignore the last caption there. that was not the correct graphic. westbound 4 to the bridge, 14 minutes. westbound 580 from 238 to the bay bridge about 15 minutes. hopefully you won't get as much traffic today because traffic and your drive times, southbound 101 from highway 37 to 580, eight minutes. 580 to the golden gate, ten minutes. from sonoma boulevard to lakeville highway, 11 minutes.

"today in the bay's" sergio quintana spoke with the stressed out travelers. >> reporter: this is at rush hour. plenty of travelers running to their flights. >> it was a little bit of a mess to get into the actual airport. >> the traffic was horrible. >> reporter: the storms may be returning in a few days right about the time people will be returning back home.orried abou that yet. >> we brought coats. we live in se umbrellas.

we're good. >> reporter: for those who did get to their flights on time, air travel was mostly smooth. a handful were canceled out of san jose innational. sfo had more delays. airlines have mostly recovers from storms that swept through the bay area. travelers heading towards denver or chicago will likely be seeing delays because of weather conditions storming through the regions. for those on the road conditions are also improving, just not as quickly. >> there are people that were bundled up and waiting inside the car, no food, no water. >> reporter: this is video of the snow and wind storm that prompted the chp to close i-5 near the oregon border. drivers were stranded in the cold for 10 to 15 hours. that section of i-5 has reopened but still a challenge to get through. same for the grapevine. snow on mt. hamilton and hail rounded out a wild day of weather.

and if you have travel plans in the north bay specifically during this long thanksgiving weekend, smart trains are here to help you out. free service begins today through sunday on trains throughout marin and sonoma counties. the transit agency says this is mainly to help those displaced by the kincade fire but anyone can take advantage. smart will run on a weekend schedule today and tomorrow. 4:35 and new this morning the reward just increased to find the person responsible for throwing objects, possibly even shooting, at cars along highway 101. $4,000 now offered. the chp says there have been 42 incidents in the prune dale area since february. the latest was on monday. something hit a van on 101 southbound, tore through the rear driver's side window, but nobody was hurt. and the search is on for a missing bay area grandmother believed to be with her two grandchildren. >> relatives say they spoke with 75-year-old sandra young on sunday. the family says she does suffer

from a slight case of dementia. she's had custody of the two children, 9 and 7, since they were just babies. they were last seen at young's dialysis appointment in fairfield on monday. that's when she told family she would later pick up a turkey at her sister's house in vallejo but never showed. police have been tracking her license plate. it's been spotted in several different locations. her daughter-in-law says they just want her home safe. >> fairfield pd did a ping on the license plate when she was going through those cameras and it ended up in near pablo, richmond, and now danville. she's distraught right now. so we need her home. >> young is driving a 2004 acura with california license plate number 5hlm514. she has no cell phone. they think she's confused, and

they don't think foul play is involved. now on to details on a massive wildfire in southern california. recent rainfall really helping out the firefighters in the cave fire. it's now 40% contained. this is the video you want to see in a fire. scorched more than 4,000 acres since it started monday afternoon in the mountains near santa barbara. firefighters recently lifted an evacuation order just in time for thanksgiving. >> thank goodness. coming up on "today in the bay," the silicon valley turkey trot is a thanksgiving tradition here in the bay area. up next meet one man who nearly lost his life during the race three years ago and the three fellow racers who came to his rescue. it's a perfect story for thanksgiving morning. andairl quiet today. we'll keep an eye on it. you're watching "today in the bay." ♪ here in the club i can't even hear my own voice. ♪

life. >> we have a connection very few people have, and that's something we can appreciate a lot. i run a 10:30 mile. >> reporter: it was mike who in a painful way brought them all together. the then 49-year-old experienced runner was on the alameda just about a mile from the 10k finish. >> i was like, okay, let's sprint this thing out, finish the race, right. all of a sudden i just felt really light headed, and i went down on a knee, hey, i must be fainting. i've never faintr:, was the bad news. a carevent. he was told he only chance of>>eporter: the good ne that zena, andrea, and annie were also running that day. >> something told me to go back and look. >> reporter: a cardiac unit nurse was the first to stop. >> the moment i saw mike he was clutching his chest and leaning over. >> reporter: annie, a nursing student, was next.

>> i was running with a friend and she said, when you saw that, you just -- i have never seen you like that. you just went into your nurse mode. >> reporter: then andrea, an e.r. nurse, joined in the rescue. the three abandoning their races to join the race to save mike. performing cpr and keeping him alive long enough to make it to the hospital. >> so appreciative of them. there's no words for it. >> reporter: it is an experience that, three years later, mike still dwells on but it turns out to be a moment that changed all their lives. there is the affirmation it gave a nursing student that she made the rightnurses, the knowledge that eo the test. ther to this day and are even planning on running this year's race continuing what is becoming for them the most thankful of thanksgiving traditions.

my car. are bad actors exploiting the largest visa program? our investigative unit teamed up on a seven-month-long probe into the visa program. >> the team found loopholes that allowed the potential fraud. >> reporter: more than 1.2 million foreign students use the f-1 visa program to study here and the vast majority play by the rules. they allow students to work up to three years at a u.s. company after graduation to gain skilled technical experience. according to data from the department of homeland security, many tech giants employ thousands every year. but we found among those legitimate companies, more than a dozen questionable businesses that seem to exist only on paper

and that may have provided false employment records to thousands of foreign students so those students could stay in the country after graduation. we found most of those companies had no actual office or the business address traced back to homes, condos, even office complexes where they did not exist. we wanted to know if we could find them, why couldn't homeland security. here is the list of the 13 companies. how is it possible we found them and you didn't. >> it does not mean we did not find them. we may be actively looking at them right now. >> reporter: we talked with a ranking membe tor say and see some of the questionable companies in greater detail. tc website nbcbayarea.com/investigations. >> thank you, stephen. the macy's day thanksgiving parade will start in a few hours. >> there is a big question mark about a staple of the event. jay gray has a look at the

balloons. >> reporter: good morning. from the start of the 93rd macy's thanksgiving day parade you can see the floats lined up and ready to go here. the big question this morning is these giant balloons, the character balloons, will they fly? if the parade started right now the answer would be yes. the concern has been over the winds, sustained winds of 23 miles an hour, gusts up to 34 would keep them on the ground. we haven't felt those winds at this point. should be quite a parade today. unseast onlyhere, more than 3 mo see the parade roll by. you have the country, celine dion, the headliner who will perform at this year's parade andsh. you can watch it here on your nbc station. for now, though, the latest from new york. i'm jay gray. back to you.

morning. you may want to take extra time. go out, turn on your car, turn on the heater and let it do its thing. satellite radar, stormy days that system that dropped down blasting us with heavy winds and heavy rain. and we still have some instability off the coast. what does that mean for us? i have storm ranger up and scanning right now. you can see, as i mentioned, we still have some instability which will meet the chance of seeing isolated showers through the afternoon. these hues of pink and white, low elevation snow again. we saw some snow on top of mt. hamilton at the 2,000 to 3,000 elevation mark and that's because it's such a cold storm the temperatures will drop down low enough for us to continue to see some of that dusting of snow. we'll continue to see the pockets of on and off again showers from 3:30, 4:00. it's not going to be heavy widespread like we saw the last two days. we should see that tapering off. as far as your daytime highs we'll be very cold, very comfortable, though.

at least it will feel more like fall fall. a preview of winter. we'll take a break from the rain but looking ahead into sunday, another round of rain, wind and sierra snow ahead. this is all going to make its way in saturday evening into sunday. rain becoming extremely widespread into monday morning. the difference between this storm and the last, this one is setting up to be more of an atmospheric river event. right now it's looking like it's pushing off more to the central coast. however, it will mean more accumulation in terms of the rainfall compared to what we saw the past two days from 36 inches and more sierra snow. for those of how are traveling to the sierra expect that snow to continue for the next two days through friday. we're going to continue to see the snow. saturday when the new storm rolls in, that's going to mean another day of dangerous travel. sunday will be the worst for the sierras. if you plan to make it down, you

may have to wait until not monday but tuesday. the reason for that is, well, the roads will still be extremely slick and we could still be seeing gusting winds from 30, 40 plus miles per hour even at some of the lower elevation areas. we'll see that develop into saturday with the rain, 54 degrees. travel delays could be possible once again on sunday. monday will be the best overall. inland areas, again, friday will be the driest day of the week and accumulations from 1 to 2 inches. we're not in the clear just yet. back to you. >> vianey, thank you. it's 4:52. coming up on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> we're talking about black friday hang-ups to help you avoid the same headaches. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next.
