morning at home. kari is also off. mike is also off. we will get to all things thanksgiving in a moment. first, the warriors -- oh, my gosh. they were looking so impressive last night. they're working hard pulling off a win. just their fourth of the season. we are so thrilled about it. it was so funny to see him snatch that mic out of kira burke's hand. >> i haven't been to the new stadium. >> i haven't either. my husband had a chance to go last night. because i had to wake up at 1:00 a.m. today and we had two little kids, sorry, honey. >> that is such a morning anchor thing to say, by the way. when i woke up today at 1:00 a.m. what you think of as night we think of as day. >> we're having dinner while you're having breakfast. >> exactly. vianey is doing double duty.

>> i have you you covered. hopefully everybody is behaving on the roads. i want you to get a closer look at your traffic and weather. san francisco, 42 degrees. it's a little cold out there. look at the current temperatures throughout the entire bay area. cold, frosty. 30s up to the north bay. napa, 35. santa cruz, 38. san jose a cold 40. if you're wondering about the rain, is it completely gone? well, most of it is. the majority of the system has tracked east but we still have a lot of instability and that's going to bring lingering isolated showers through the afternoon and anywhere you see the white there, a little more white/pink mix is a wintry mix. the system is cold enough to possibly bring more snow for some of our local mountain top areas at elevations 2,000 to 3,000 feet so that will be fun to watch. a lot better to watch than if you're out there. i'm happy to report it looks like a few folks are out there. a live look at dublin.

aside from that, though, our maps are looking green when it comes to our speed sensors which for us green on the speed sensor map means go. no traffic incident to report this hour. let's hope it stays that way. back to you. >> thank you, vianey. new overnight north korea fired two unidentified projectiles into the sea according to south korea. military leaders didn't say whether they were missiles or exactly where they landed. the move does come three days after the north said troops conducted artillery drills. the disputed boundary with the south. some experts say the military is trying to pressure the united states to make concessions in nuclear discussions. extra patrols will be out in force in two neighborhoods. it comes after the deadly halloween shooting in orinda left five people dead along with two home invasions in lafayette. the most recent home invasion happened tuesday night. lafayette police tell us three thieves stormed their way into a

home and tied up two people inside. it took the victims hours to break free and call 911. the first home invasion in lafayette happened halloween night, the same as the orinda shooting. sheriff's deputies are not sure if the two are linked. 5:04. investigators finally identified a woman killed 18 years ago. we now know it was gray who was found in a burning garbage bin in sacramento back in 2001. she was reported missing in san francisco. investigators used advance dna technology to identify the remains. there is a reward for any information about the case. so it's not vince vaughn nor owen wilson but police in san francisco have arrested an alleged serial wedding crasher. this man mario hernandez was accused of stealing purses, laptops after sneaking into several large events. he targeted weddings in the bay area. the l.a. area a.

hernandez was arrested inside of a restroom at sfo on tuesday. he faces several charges including grand theft. wow. hundreds of volunteers across the bay area are pitching in today to make sure no one goes without a meal this thanksgiving. one of the biggest holiday feasts, of course, at glide memorial church in san francisco. "today in the bay's" thom jensen is there. we understand they're putting the final touches on the meals. >> reporter: you can see all the empty tins on the table tops here. we'll get volunteers here in a little bit. they're going to start filling this up with 250 turkeys, 200 hams, sweet potato, stuffing, and all the trimmings for a traditional thanksgiving meal. this is important work they do here at glide memorial methodist church because one in four san franciscans is deemed to be food

insecure. that means they lack reliable access to plenty of affordable nutritious food every day and serve hundreds of meals here daily. actually about 2,000. and on thanksgiving that really jumps up. they expect to serve as many as 5,000 meals today between breakfast, the thanksgiving meal at 11:00 to 1:00 and bag lunches which they'll be sending out to folks. volunteers started preparing food last night and organizers say they're ready to start feeding people here in a couple hours when they open for breakfast. you are doing a lot more outreach to the community than ever before. talk to me about glide on the go and how you get out to folks in the community who can't make it here. >> sure. san francisco and the needs for our services are changing. we see needs that are outside of the neighborhood and people who are struggling to feed themselves, struggling for services in other neighborhoods.

we're starting to meet those needs where they are. we have mobile units that are going out to bayview, wherever people are in need, that's where we're going. we'll meet them where they are. >> reporter: what about meet who want to donate or volunteer? you'll have about 500 volunteers today. how can more people get involved with donating and volunteering? >> sure. we need people to volunteer every day. that's always great. we're happy to have you here. we need volunteers in january and february when we see our lowest turnout. go to glide.org/volunteer, you can volunteer every day of the year. we're here 364 days of year. the only day we're closed is january 1st. >> reporter: donate or volunteer if you'd like to volunteer. we expect hundreds of people here coming to help get people served today. in fact, at breakfast today mayor london breed along with the fire chief and police chief

redell is live at the starting line already. bob, are you stretching, getting ready to run? >> reporter: i, unfortunately, do not have that guilt because i have a perfect physique. if i were to run, i would ruin it for everyone else, right? hey, guys, they're looking at already around 22,000 people registered for the 15th annual silicon valley turkey trot. the starting line, the first on santa clara street. back in 2005, it was kind of on a whim. you heard the year before that sacramento had a similar race and up said your wife left you this. had 1,900 runners. now over 22,000 with a goal of 25,000. do you ever see it getting to be this big of a deal? >> our goal was always to be not only the biggest thanksgiving day run in the world but the most generous and we're meeting both goals, seven years in a row, the largest thanksgiving day run in the world. we want to give more to the

nonprofit that is we're trying to serve. and if we hit our goal today, 522,000 additional meals for second harvest food bank, 440,000 more meals for food bank santa cruz, 300 homeless people permanently helped by the housing trust, healthier kids foundation, 3,100 kids getting dental, vision and health screenings they need. 3,000 people with chronic medical conditions and that's changing the community for the common good. >> reporter: you're hoping to raise another $900,000 this morning. what do you say to people at home right now saying it's cold out here and i have the turkey in the oven. i'm going to sit around and watch the parade. >> as nbc bay area will remind your listeners and viewers, it's going to be a beautiful morning. the sun is coming up. there's no rain all day in san jose. and you have 25,000 people to help keep you warm. come on out and join us.

the 7:00 a.m. mark, 40 degrees. and then by 9:00 a.m., 43, you won't have to worry about the rain during the turkey trot. the biggest impact is the last of the heating of the sunshine. so right now we are still very cold in the 30s at santa rosa, napa. frost advisories are in place through the middle of the day and the satellite radar right now is detecting lightning strikes. notice the majority of those lightning strikes are just offshore and also still a lot of rain down through southern california which is what has made that treacherous drive, still another tough day for travel so make sure to check out the grapevine road conditions. storm ranger now, a couple light showers here and there. a lot of drizzle into livermore as well. a wintry mix expected through the evening hours and here is a look at your micro climate highs. we're talking 48 degrees in san francisco and only a high of 50 degrees in oakland. 51 in san jose. 49 in concord.

they are going to be colder today and the shower chances will diminish as we get later on in the day. the snow levels will drop down to the 2,000 elevation mark. friday our driest day and then, yes, on saturday we get another storm system developing. this low pressure system is going to dig down bringing us heavy, widespread rain. also the sierra snow which is going to impact that travel heavily especially heading into sunday. it's going to be a rough weekend ahead. don't put those rain boots away just yet. back to you. >> good to have the warning, vianey, thanks. mike are all home enjoying thanksgiving. vianey arana, of course, is here. we'll get to traffic in just a bit. we want to talk about the parade, though, in new york city. the macy's thanksgiving day parade blowing up some of those balloons set to begin in an hour and a half. you can watch it right here on nbc bay area at 9:00 this morning. there are concerns about the winds and whether the iconic balloons can fly high. we'll have a report from the parade coming up at 5:45. >> hopefully it goes off without a hitch. so many people make that a part of their annual tradition. >> and the balloons are a huge part of it. >> yes. >> they're also big, massive things. imagine that flying in the wind. >> i think they said 90 people have to hold each balloon, and so if the wind picks it off, my gosh, can you imagine? let's focus on the weather here. what are we dealing with, vianey? nothing like the east coast. >> not right now but we certainly had our fair share of wild weather the past few days.

your concern is having the proper attire to face off against the 30s. 34 degrees, napa 35. palo alto 37. santa cruz, 38 degrees. san jose, 40. how are we looking to the rest of the nation? the midwest enjoys making fun of us because they claim they're used to it. right now we're actually colder than the east coast. new york is at 47. look at us. we're at 40. yes, we're running a few degrees cooler now. when you compare it to minneapolis, of course, colder there. below freezing temperatures. seattle, 33 degrees. chicago, 32 degrees. and we do have that storm system just over oklahoma city that's bringing some very, very active weather the next couple of days. a big area for concern to watch. in terms of that system that rolled through the past few days, the majority effective but a couple isolated showers, not

tomorrow. 5:33. a reward is going up to find the person responsible for throwing things or possibly shooting at cars along highway 101. $4,000 reward. the chp says there had been 42 incidents in the prunedale area. somebody hit a van on 101 southbound. tore through the driver's rear side window -- rear driver's side window. i don't know how there's a rear driver's side window, i get it. the left side. nobody hurt. >> very scary. the search is on this morning for a missing bay area grandmother believed to be with her two grandchildren. >> relatives say they spoke to the 75-year-old sandra young on sunday. the family says she suffers a slight case of dementia. she's had custody of a 9-year-old and 7-year-old since they were babies. they were last seen at young's dialysis appointment in fairfield on monday. she told the family she would

pick up a turkey at her sister's house but never showed. police have been tracking her license place, spotted in several different locations. her daughter-in-law says they just want her home safe. >> fairfield pd did a ping on the license plate when she was going through those cameras. and it ended up in contra costa county. pablo, richmond and danville. she's distraught right now. we need her home. >> young is driving a 2004 acura with california license plate 5hlm514. now she has no cell phone. she chooses not to carry one. they think she's confused and don't think anything like foul play is involved. now on to new details on this massive wildfire in southern california. recent rainfall is helping out firefighters. the cave fire is 40% contained

as of yesterday. it has scorched more than 4,000 acres since it started monday afternoon in the mountains near santa barbara. firefighters lifted all evacuation orders so that puts everyone back in their homes just in time for thanksgiving. hundreds of volunteers across the bay area pitching in to make sure nobody goes without a meal this thanksgiving. one of the biggest ones, of course, the glide memorial church. >> that's where we find "today in the bay's" thom jensen. the church is putting the final touches on the holiday meals. how is it looking? >> reporter: it's looking great. i checked in with you about half an hour ago. i told you volunteers would start arriving. they started bringing in the food, all the fixings for salads and will start fixing up these tins, serve 2,000 to 5,000 meals today. they'll have turkey and ham, sweet potatoes, stuffing, all for a traditional thanksgiving

meal. the turkeys just arrived, some of them anyway. they'll serve 250 turkeys today, about 200 hams, and as many as 9,000 meals over the next four days during the holiday weekend. put that into perspective on a normal day they serve about 2,000 total meals. it'll be a big day today. 5,000 meals. the mayor will be here serving breakfast today along with san francisco's fire chief and police chief. we'll talk to them in a little bit. anybody feeling in the giving mode today you can give to glide. go to glide.org/volunteer or donate if you'd like to donate. they can always use more donations. and more volunteers, about 500 volunteers helping out here today. they need volunteers every day of the week and at 6:00 today we're going to talk to one of the people who is responsible for making sure that those daily meals go off without a hitch and

we just got a report a short time ago that, yes, the balloons will fly. there are the rockettes getting ready and practicing on the big parade. 93rd year this morning. >> i guess it is a live look at them getting ready ahead of the big show. it's all systems go. if you missed it before the commercial break it is all systems go for the balloons. everyone's eyes are fixed on the famed parade and they will soar down manhattan's 6th avenue. >> "today in the bay's" jay gray has a great look along the parade route. balloons are going up, right? >> reporter: yes, thank goodness, scott, kira. we will see the balloons. lack at astronaut snoopy making its way out. they pulled the nets off the balloons and what a cheer there was, people realizing they were going to be a part of the 93rd macy's thanksgiving day parade.

first turkey trot. people are starting to flow in. you'd be surprised you come to us in the next half hour, the next hour and this place will be packed. right now 22,000 to 23,000 people registered for this footrace, one of the largest in the country. register and i'll have more information. they're hoping to get up to 25,000 for the 5k and 10k. they have raised $8.7 million to feed the hungry, help the homeless and care for children. the goal is to raise another 900,000 this morning. here is the ceo of the leadership group and the founder of this turkey trot. why is this important to you? >> this is important for three reasons. one, we want to build community. i could have easily gotten on the phone and raised a million dollars a year from the wonderful companies in this

valley, but that doesn't build community. two, we want to help families less fortunate than yours and mine and help through the year. in a society where the average american gains 6 pounds between thanksgiving and new year's day. >> is that a fact? >> it is a fact. >> reporter: i asked him if it's a fact because i usually double that number come december 25th. i'm actually impressed it's that low. you can register, though, as i mentioned, for the silicon valley turkey trot. register until 9:22 this morning. the main event where you have a mass amount of people is 8:30. they have a wheelchair race. there's also a kids fun run. again, this is the 15th year of this event.

along. i will throw something in here. if i can help one person, and i do this every thanksgiving. if you have not defrosted your turkey yet, it's half an hour per pound which means the average turkey is 15 pounds you're looking at about 1:00, 1:30 for the defrost and then 15 minutes per pound for cooking. if you start defrosting now your turkey will be ready at 4:45. a great time. i'm saying do it now. that's perfect timing for dinner. if the person takes it out at noon, yeah, welcome to 10:00 at night. >> a lifetime movie. >> time is a cooking. >> that's a lot of math. i was trying to follow along. i don't have to worry about the turkey. i can't cook. we're doing takeout tonight. if you're joining me with the takeout, a blanket.

>> do you have the estimate on that? >> if there's a lot of door dashers out tonight i will congratulate their hustle because people like me will be using them. the silicon valley turkey trot, as bob, you saw, it's chilly but will be perfection, just like bob, for running the marathon. the turkey trot, rather. the temperatures are perfect if you're going to be out there running. let's take a look at how the rest of the nation is doing in terms of your family members. if you didn't get a chance to visit this year, look at salt lake city. casper, 13 degrees. lincoln, 29 degrees. it is chilly and, unfortunately, mississippi, oklahoma city and kansas city they're still dealing with severe thunderstorms. they even have some tornado warnings that sprouted up as well within the past couple of hours. if you're head to go new york city they will be flying those balloons. good news. to be fair right now we're colder than new york city. san jose at 40 degrees and in the north bay we're in the 30s.

satellite radar you can still see lightning bolts and thunder. down through southern california. we'll still see the chance of a couple isolated showers. a live look at storm ranger up and scanning. so far our day will be mostly dry, a spotty chance by the evening, climbing into the upper 40s. 48 in livermore. 50 in oakland. 51 in san jose. and then over the next couple of days this is our next round of rain we're looking at. we have an atmospheric river system developing. another round of powerful rain, gusty winds, and more sierra snow that's lining up just in time for saturday and sunday. that's going to make for extremely dangerous travel especially the folks heading back from eating all that turkey. you may have to take an extra day to play it safe heading into monday. our three-day rain average can be anywhere from 1 to possibly 2 feet of rain. i'll send it back to you.

couch. they're saying walking for 15 to 20 minutes helps maintains the body's glucose response. walking before dinner okay, too. but they say don't overindulge in food and alcohol later in the day. whatever, baylor. one of the largest foreign visa programs. a seven-month-long probe into the visa program. >> stephen stock reports that the team found loopholes in the program that have allowed potential fraud. >> reporter: more than 1.2 million students use the visa program to study here and the vast majority play by the rules. visas allow students to work up to three years at a u.s. company after graduation to gain skill, technical experience. according to data from the department of homeland security many silicon valley tech giants employ thousands of legitimate f-1 visa holders every year.
