dangerous weather on the way. what you need to know as we head into the weekend. good evening. thanks for joining us on this special thanksgiving edition of nbc bay area news. >> a lot happen thing holiday, not just shopping, but our weather is about to turn treacherous. we're on the verge of a freeze warning and rain. >> rob, what is the timeline? >> in terms of the cold, already at freezing, down to 32 degrees in the north baby tomorrow morning. napa and santa rosa seeing 23 degree temperatures. low 30s around san jose. so locations under that freeze warning, 10:00 tonight until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow with frost advisories for the inland east bay. the south bay, as soon as this cold weather moves out, attention shifts this weekend for some very heavy rain. we're talking about two to five inches of rain possible for the

mountains. this carries all the way through sunday. along with that, some gusty winds. the reason these rain totals look good is an atmospheric connection and may linger into monday, leading to runoff problems out of the mountains. we could be looking at some localized flooding. coming up, a closer look at the hour by hour timeline of when to expect the strongest wind and rain. >> thank you, rob. it is a one-two punch, with freezing tempts and people are scrambling to get ready. robert? >> that's right. we are downtown where the popular christmas in the park is setting up to open and the ice rink is going. people we talked to said they're well aware of the big weather

changes comes and are bracing for it. >> let's go, let's go. >> reporter: hot chocolate is a pretty good remedy for a cold thanksgiving night and no one is worried about a little chill on an ice rink. but rain is dropping and both rain as well as snow falling on mt. hamilton. >> we are taking precases and have turned the heating on in the house to make sure nothing freezes. i spent a lot of time this morning cleaning the gutters because of last night. >> reporter: the upcoming atmospheric river is a real concern for many communities hit by wildfires. even this area torn up by the loma fire three years ago is still recovering. one homeowner said residents are ready for the storms but isn't sure about the soil. >> when there's the water, it

gets super muddy. a couple times last year we couldn't even get out of our house. we had to be picked up and drive us out on atvs. >> reporter: some people we talked to say they'll be taking precautions to protect the displays and exhibits, which won't be easy with cold and wet weather on the way. robert handa, nbc bay area news. >> it is cold and wet down in southern california. following breaking news here. the grapevine is closed. i-5 shut down because of snow and ice. you can see some of the conditions here before it was shut down. no record of when it will reopen. this has been a problem throughout the tday. and near san bernardino, the rain causing mudslides and that sinkhole. this is in redlands.

traffic was backed up for miles. we'll be tracking this changing weather throughout the weekend. our website is a great re-source. down road our free nbc bay area app with access to live radar. tonight, a thanksgiving blessing in fairfield. a great grandmother and two great grand kids, missing since monday, reunited with loved ones. this happened thanks to an alert gas station clerk. she asked the clerk to use the bathroom. the clerk remembered he had just gotten an alert on her phone about the missing grandmother. >> i looked at my phone, and i called 911. i said i think the lady you guys are looking for is here in my store. >> police arrived and found them

safe. her family telling us she has dementia. she had food and water in the war and had been driving between richmond and danville for the past three days. it's an area she is familiar with. new video of a truck and a driver wanted in connection with a hit and run. police say the driver of this car hit a 71-year-old man riding his bike. that man died at the scene. officers think this may be a commercial sewage truck. this is prime shopping season and it's primetime for car break-ins. a warning from police who have experienced an increase in break-ins. seven team are out of their homes this thanksgiving after a fire in fairfield. it took firefighters 45 minutes to knock down the flames.

it appears to have started by accident. and about 200 families in sonoma county are without homes after last month's kinkade fire. jodi hernandez has this story about one family trying to figure out how they're going to get back on their feet. >> reporter: that family has been staying at this hotel for five weeks. today, they returned to see their house. they say they have a lot to be grateful for. >> that was my sister's room right there. >> reporter: ramona hall never thought she would be spending thanksgiving like this. >> reporter: after the fire destroyed her home, hall got the courage to return. >> my mom would have been in the house cooking thanksgiving for us. >> reporter: instead of enjoying

grandma's recipes, hall managed to salvage a few recipes. >> this is my grandmother's old copper pot. >> reporter: hall's 10-year-old daughter has spent nearly all her life here. returning to see the home she grew up in destroyed wasn't easy. >> it's been kind of hard, because i've had like a lot of memories up here. it hurts to know that all of my stuff is gone. >> reporter: the family may have lost their house but the community has rallied behind them, and even without insurance, they know they'll recover. >> today is a good day to be thankful. and we are. so we have each other, and we're safe. this is just stuff. >> reporter: the family is among four families, who have been staying at this hotel. it's all been paid for by the local nonprofit. they say that nonprofit is trying to find them homes but

they can use all the help they can get. i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> a lot to be thankful for tonight. a political statement as vandals defaced a pair of notable san francisco statues. they are of captain juan batista and carlos iii of spain. both of those statues near san francisco's zoo. you can see the vanldzales wrote, this is stolen land. batista is crediting with establishing a mission that would become san francisco. and carlos iii was a spanish king. a good way to earn that ex-sex extra slice of pie. 22,000 people laced up their shoes for the turkey trot. sims it started in 2005, the run through downtown san jose has been one of the largest turkey trots in the country.

>> this is a great one, because it builds community and the funds raised go to so many good causes. so i feel really good about starting my day with this. >> the event has raised $8.7 million to feed the hungry, hoping to add another $900,000 to that total. the 77th annual big bone game. the tradition started in the '40s when a student took a bone from his father's butcher shop and declared it the trophy. >> you feel like everybody that played the game in the past, you feel them on the field. so you're just playing for them, playing for your fathers, your mothers, playing for yourself, the coaches and the organization. the whole team, the school. so it's just an awesome feeling to be playing in this game.

america's longest war, he told the troops he was honored to spend part of his holiday with them. >> there's no way i would rather celebrate this thanksgiving than right here with the toughest, strongest, best and bravest warriors on the face of the earth. you are indeed that. >> reporters were under strict instructions to keep the trip a secret. he's traveling with a small group of aides. there are about 12,000 u.s. forces still in afghanistan. a mishap at the macy's thanksgiving day parade. a marcher took a hit by the nutcracker balloon after strong winds tipped it over. at this point, the turkey dinner is over and most people

have two options -- relax or head to the store to cash in on those black friday deals. let's bring in sergio quintana. >> reporter: i guess the big deals are on the big televisions. i would have taken the first hospitalization, but check it out here, there are so many people still coming to the best buy here. so that they can try to cash in on their own person aleck tronnic deals. this was a line of customers waiting to get into best buy this afternoon. one family told me they had a designated family member to hold their spot. and people lined up at the target store waiting for the deals. some shoppers skipped dinner to get here and others gave up some relaxation. did you get something to eat today? >> no. you shop better when you're hunger. i came hunger.

>> i don't know. i just push the cart and say yes, dear, yes, dear. >> reporter: the secret to a happy marriage. >> don't talk and just agree. happy wife, happy life. i'm good. >> reporter: this is the line of customers streaming into the target. a lot of people said they're looking for deals on the gigantic screen tvs. one woman said she's looking to upgrade her 45 inch screen to a 60-inch. yeah, you can see some of those people here as they're coming out. it's very interesting, watching people loading those gigantic tvs. they don't fit in the cars. so they're having to ask friends to bring their trucks and suvs. >> some big tvs. thanks, sergio. you may have experienced some hiccups on social media. facebook apps went down today because of a software issue.

the company said that it was working to restore access to the apps. outage monitoring website down detector says only about 8,000 users were affected around the world. people complained they couldn't post photos or videos. tom brokaw is coming to town. the former anchor is in the bay area tomorrow, signing copies of his new book. the 79-year-old brokaw will be at the book passage at san francisco at 4:00 p.m. holiday shoppers know some of the best deals are online, but that makes you a target for online thieves. here's some tips to protect yourself. >> i would rather shop online, if i can. >> reporter: american shoppers will spend billions online on black friday this year, while scammers try to get their hands

on some of that money. >> e know there is scams and all that, but i don't think of it much. >> reporter: according to the fbi, scammers stole $184 million from people online during last year's holiday shopping season. >> the criminals are getting smarter. >> reporter: this professor is a cybersecurity expert and says online shopping scams come in different forms, but some of the most popular ones are wake websites or phishing sites that try to trick you into giving u you -- them your personal information. and if a zeal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. you stick with retailers you

know? >> yeah, amazon almost 90%. >> reporter: if you decide to shop in store, the professor warns you not to leave electronics in the car while you're gone. even if locked, and they're hidden, thieves can find those devices and break into your car to steal them. >> when you're passing by a car, you would know that there's a device there admitting those kind of signals. up next on this edition of nbc bay area news, dangerous weather is on the way friday, saturday, and sunday. a lot to be prepared for. rob mayeda breaks down exactly what to expect as we head into the weekend and the commute back home for a lot of people visiting for thanksgiving. my parents never taught me anything about managing money.

before the next storm that's coming in. thanks for joining us on special edition of nbc bay area news. >> it's been a chilly thanksgiving. rob, who is going to see freezing temps? >> we've managed to hit those numbers in the north bay. in san jose, we're in the low 40s outside. 44 degrees. and look at the high temperature today, only 50 degrees with some showers off to the hills east of san jose. right now, the warmest location, if you want to call it that is san francisco, 46. high in san francisco today, 48 degrees. so chilly around the bay area, and it's now officially freezing. 36 in santa rosa, and you're seeing 30s out towards fairfield. the first part of our weather story is that freeze warning up in the north bay. look at the temperatures for the morning, 20s to start the day tomorrow morning, around santa rosa and napa. san jose, frost advisories for

the inland east bay. tomorrow afternoon, still a slight chance of isolated showers around the coast. that is as try as the forecast can get with a chance of seeing a few showers. radar, much like your thanksgiving dinner, still picking up some leftover showers here. overall, the majority of our storm system now is in southern california where they're dealing with some thunderstorms. the grapevine as you heard at the beginning of this news cast, the snow level is down to 3,000 feet in southern california. tomorrow, a few passing showers late tomorrow afternoon into the evening. then things will calm down very briefly friday night. look what happens here saturday morning. the rain is making a big

comeback. and look at those wind speeds picking up out of the southeast. 5:00 saturday evening, wind gusts 25 to 40 miles per hour. so we'll likely have wind advisories going around the bay area this weekend. and the rain, increasing activity from lunchtime saturday. the north bay sees heavy periods of rain. and then by 11:00 saturday, now you're seeing the heavier rain cross into the south bay. so rain totals, about an inch of rain for most of the howland locations. the santa cruz mountains, it's possible we could pick up three to five inches of rain starting midday saturday through 11:00 sunday. notice the future cast as we move further out in time. you still got the rain here, and it may not be until midday monday before the rain rates ease off. notice how this line stalls out.

we're going to have to watch runoff potential over the weekend, especially leading out of the mountain areas along with kusy winds. seven-day forecast. you see the temperatures slowly climbing as the moisture rich air comes into the bay area. so temperatures rise over the weekend, but the mountain rain totals could be significant. so the holiday drive home around the bay area and beyond will be complicated with that next storm. >> thanks, rob. no doubt the bay area needs the rain, but here's what we don't need, more potholes on the roadways. drivers spent the wday dodging potholes on their way to dinner. here's more from oakland. >> reporter: we're standing

along this narrow road just off of park boulevard in oakland. it's nearly impossible for these drivers to dodge potholes. with a frost advisory and the rain in the forecast, those are the two ingredients to make potholes like this one deeper and wider. >> there's potholes all over the place. >> reporter: it's a bumpy ride to jared's aunt's house in oak grove, two is hosting thanksgiving this year. >> it creates bigger potholes. >> reporter: he says his suv tires can't accord the shock. but a powerful storm coming our way this weekend means the pot holes are likely going to get deeper and wider. >> hopefully they can fix the roads. >> reporter: it's not just drivers facing this prediction.

million uber trips each tay, a small handful of allegations of intimidation, physical and sexual assault. now uber is set to test drive a program in latin america. the plan, test the same program in the u.s. soon. here's how it would work. when you get in, the uber app will ask if you want to start an audio recording. that conversation will then be recorded, encrypted and put on the uber access website. >> this is to protect uber and its drivers against allegations by passengers that they were assaulted. >> reporter: the problem, while 35 states allow audio recordings of one person to the party consents. potentially every passenger, not just the account holder,

including children, even drunk or medicated adults. the company has been testing video recordings in the u.s. uber says, our hope to is provide a source of truth if an issue ever occurs during a trip. an intended safety measure likely to invite intense scrutiny over who is recorded and who can listen in. back here at home, the tradition continues in san francisco. some day hopefully we won't need hundreds of volunteers, but today, volunteers served a hot meal at glide memorial church. >> reporter: people came out today to volunteer and sit down together for a thanksgiving meal. steven palmer is in the glide choir and has been coming here for four years. >> if it wasn't for the meal, i

don't know where i would be. my life has changed because of this place, and that meal. but the meal is slamming. >> it's going great. we've been here since 4:00 in the morning, serving thousands of meals. >> reporter: more than 500 volunteers kicked off the season today, serving meals with all the fixings. sweet potatoes, stuffing, veggies, depravy, rolls, dess t dessert, and fruit punch. >> not everyone is connected to their family. and this is a place that welcomes everyone. and it feels good to be here. >> reporter: it's a holiday tradition that's spanned more than 50 years. >> to people on the streets to people with great fortune, all of us coming together where everyone is connecting. >> yi've been working here 14 years and the need is getting greater.

fire and was shooting flames into the air, posing a challenge for firefighters. so pg&e had to rush in, shut off the gas and electricity so crews were able to put out the rest of the fire. on this day, there's a lot of talk and stories about volunteers, a lot in the bay area. volunteers for the salvation army served up thousands of meals, 4,000 to be exact. volunteers gathered to make sure those who aren't able to leave their homes got to enjoy a nice thanksgiving meal. >> very nice. it was try, so travel wasn't too bad for most people today, but it's going to change. it's going to get bad, especially for people trying to get back home. let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. >> we'll be watching the temperatures closely the next few hours. you'll notice around the north bay, we got the temperatures in the low 30s outside, moving forward, though, rain and wind are going to be the weekend weather headlines. when it comes to using data, everyone is different.

still a chance of seeing a few scattered showers. even though the main event is still in southern california, snow in the high deserts, grapevine closed again. you see we're on the outer periphery of this weather system. look at this, 3:00 tomorrow afternoon, slight chance of small hail, given how cold the air is aloft. friday is not a big story rain wise, but you see how the rain spills back in. and wind speeds start to accelerate as we have a surface low strengthening offshore. by the time we get to 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 saturday, now with gusts up to 45 miles per hour on the coast. so wind advisories or saturday and sunday, and rain from lunchtime saturday into saturday

evening, and around 11:00, the rain is really coming down. so most of this coming down saturday and sunday. for some of the mountainous areas, as much as five inches of rain, as this pattern holds on. and then slowly decreeing as we get into midday monday. so this goes out to ten days. look at these numbers. we had fire season a week ago, and a rain deficit. completely gone now. you can see as much as five to seven inches of rain for the north bay between now and december 8 thd. so we ale be this in for a while. good storm for the weekend. another weather alert takes us into monday morning. any time you talk about two to four, five inches of rain over
