bay, as well as san jose, and so we're going to see some waves of rain coming through. here is a look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar where we see the yellows and the reds that indicates where the heaviest rain is. most of the areas in marin county seeing some light rain, and then going into the rest of the day, we'll have another system coming in, as the atmospheric river pushes to the south, so our rain will gradually decrease today. i'll have a look at that forecast hour by hour coming up. mike, it's wet and windy out there. >> it is, you're showing that with the radar as well as what we see on the roadway. for most of the morning you see that the water is spraying up as cars drive past. this is 101 in san jose, and i turned the camera just so we could see that. there you go on the southbound side of 101 as well a tougher drive. traveling through the area because that water is kicking up on to windshields. i zoomed out the green the highlighting blends in with the speed sensors. most of the sensors are great but it is slowing out of gilroy and again through san martin, a

morning. the highway has gotten quite a good soaking overnight up here, and all throughout the rainfall was although the rainfall was light it still required both hands on the wheel as puddling became a concern. the other worry along highway 17 is a potential for mudslides. cal trans has been working throughout the summer to shore up any potential hot spots out here. so far, nothing major to report as far as mudslides are concerned. we did spot some chp officers on the side of the road, ready to respond to any slide or any accident caused by the rain. now fortunately we've seen the drivers drive with some caution so far, as they see there might be some danger ahead. the fastest you go, the more difficult it is for to you react to the trouble up ahead so remember, you might wadon't kno the driver ahead of is you about to do. keep both hands on the wheel and drive below the speed limit. drive defensively, if you will. seven inches of rain does cause

attention, you can keep yourself safe. >> these people going too fast, going too slow. i see quite a bit of accidents, try to stay in my own lane, my own speed. >> reporter: we agree with that advice, stay in your own lane. we have a little bit of a break on the drive down as well this morning, barely had to use the windshield wipers on 101 south from san jose to morgan hill, about 3:30 this morning. but that hasn't been the case all night. there is water on the roadway, and you can hear somebody taking off a little too fast for the conditions. there are puddles along the shoulders, and you saw mike's map so you know that it is slick out there, all that green area. also new video this morning of that roof leak at regional medical center in san jose. in the last 15 minutes, the hospital spokesperson told us luckily this happened in an administrative area, and did not affect patient care. still staff had to scrambling to move valuable equipment and

to go to the sierra, a lot more snow headed that way. in squaw valley we're only going to see high temperatures in the low to mid-30s and going to see the snow starting to ptaper off sunday as you come back to the bay area. if you're planning to head to the beach for the surfers it's still looking good. i know you were out there yesterday. friday it's going to be windy and rainy, and still some scattered showers through sunday. we'll talk about what's going on today, and a look at storm ranger coming up in about three minutes. >> thank you, kari. our team still on the streets covering the big weather stories for you are, including seven inches of rain. up in the santa cruz mountains, we're going to get a live update from damian trujillo. on the world stage, president trump's trip to meet with world leaders, nato leaders and the key events set to happen in the impeachment inquiry this week. plus -- >> this is a mission. this is a passion. >> nancy pelosi also in the international spotlight, her message to the world overnight. and the stock market back

too fat. too skinny. too hard. too soft. too old. too much. too unexpected. too limited. and to them we say too bad. because at kaiser permanente, we believe that everyone deserves the right to thrive.
6:43 am
good monday morning. we're still under a microclimate weather alert right now at 6:43, looking live in dublin. you have to deal with sloppy road conditions as you get ready to head out the door. rain off and on throughout the day. we see it scattered across the bay area. a closer look at the rain in the north bay and what's ahead in five minutes. >> the south bay is wet roads, slippery conditions out there. slow 280 northbound and foothill
6:44 am
expressway, location given by chp. it's jamming up 85 and 280 through cupertino. >> you said it there, mike, wet roads, slippery conditions, a lot of rain, including the santa cruz mountains. >> tough is on 17, that's a tough commute. damian trujillo is out there on the roadside, monitoring traffic and the weather. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. they haven't gotten enough rain, as if, seven inches in the last storm and now it's coming down again here on the summit of the santa cruz mountains. the traffic has slowed down considerably about 20 to 25 miles an hour here on summit. unsure what is ahead but these cars are headed northbound right now toward san jose. so it is raining, so they're slowing down as a precaution. not sure if something is up ahead. we have video of our trip up to the mountains this morning. although the rainfall was light, it's still required both hands on the wheel. it was windy on the way up, and
6:45 am
so you could feel the brisk wind even in our heavy news van. the other worry along highway 17 is a potential for mudslides. they've had their share up here, and so crews are keeping a close eye for that potential, ready to respond if the road needs clearing. we spotted chp officers on the side of the road, ready to respond also to any slide or any accident caused by the rain. fortunately what we've seen so far is drivers going slow below the speed limit, because the faster you go the more difficult it is to react to trouble up ahead so the best advice is to slow down and put both hands on the wheel, and drive defensively. there was one minor traffic accident that mike inouye mentioned up here on the summit, but that was cleared, it was a spin-out that was cleared a couple of hours ago. we saw a couple of tree trimming crews park here just for a short while before they took off. obviously some downed trees might be the order of the day up here in the mountains, so we'll
6:46 am
keep an eye out. we're live on the summit of the santa cruz mountains, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> looks soggy out there. thanks, damian, for joining us this morning. quarter to 7:00. san jose firefighters did not yet said they know what sparked a house fire near alum rock park that left a family of five without a place to live for some time. three adults, two children made it out of this home safely, this started before 9:00 on adams drive in the berryessa neighborhood. flames damaged the kitchen, dining room and garage. other areas sustained smoke damage. in southern california, passengers of a norwegian cruise ship recovering after falling ill for the second time in a week. at least 19 in total are reported to have flu-like symptoms as the norwegian "joy" arrived at the port of los angeles yesterday. officials said no one requested to be taken to the hospital. last week, six people fell ill aboard that same cruise ship. four were taken to the hospital. 6:46. happening today, president donald trump departs for the
6:47 am
nato summit. the president is set to meet with representatives of at least a dozen nations at the organization's 70th anniversary meeting in london. the white house says president trump will discuss challenges nato members face from china and russia. the summit kicks off tomorrow, continues through wednesday. meanwhile president trump's lawyers decided not to attend wednesday's impeachment hearing. republicans argue the process was unfair because president trump wasn't allowed to bring his lawyers and question witnesses, though that's exactly what the democrats offered and the invitation to do both. overnight his lawyers said no to that. tomorrow the intelligence committee is expected to hand over its findings on whether the president was wrong to withhold aid from ukraine, while asking for a political favor. democrats hoping for a full vote before christmas, setting the stage for the trial in january. house speaker nancy pelosi at the united nations conference on climate change in madrid
6:48 am
today, pledging u.s. commitment to the fight against global warming, this as president trump started with drawing the united states from the paris agreement. >> for future generations, this is a mission, this is a passion, this is a scientifically based approach to all of it, excuse me, and we are here to say to all of you on behalf of the house of representatives and the congress of the united states, we're still in it. we are still in it. >> there is pressure on the summit to strengthen the implementation of the 2015 par ace greement on limiting the rise in temperatures. the deals are live, cyber monday under way, but as nbc's jo ling kent tells us, it may not other shoppers you're competing for hot holiday items. >> welcome to cyber monday. we expect record breaking numbers comes after a big black friday online alone american
6:49 am
shoppers spent $7.4 billion and that's the most ever online for black friday but there are so many hot items out there and we're starting to see some of those electronics in particular go really fast, almost too fast. we asked why. you the shopper may not just be competing with your fellow shoppers. you may be competing with bots. we'll break all this down coming up this morning on the "today" show. we'll see you then. >> all right, sounds good. jo ling kent her story is coming up on "today" in just about 30 minutes or so. let's get you out the door. mike, there's a problem with cal train. >> cal train will have delays. we're not clear on the details but the most serious one is it involves a pedestrian who was apparently trespassing on tracks, what cal train reports is the incident in sunnyvale near mary avenue. there are a number of crossings as far as roadway crossings, that might affect local traffic as well so keep that in mind. the other transit agencies are
6:50 am
not reporting any delays. there may possibly be some help from mule out aid if there's a vta line that can do that and get that over there. we don't know whether or not they've stopped cal train or single tracking through the area through sunnyvale. you will, however, have delays right up here. over here, the other area of the south bay, and let me explain why it's hard to see. the green that means our road weather index is showing wet weather around the south bay, slick conditions so do be careful. it's a lighter volume overall but this is a tough drive north 280 and also jamming up 85 north as you travel here. 280 at foothill expressway a crash. actually there were two, one leaves the vehicle in the middle of the roadway and that's why you still have slowing coming up in toward the area. once you get into los altos, it's a beautiful drive as the sun comes up. be careful, slick conditions and possibly gusts of winds across many of our bridges. we've seen that overnight. a lot of rain, wet roadways throughout the north bay, at least concord is calming down from earlier crashes. kari, over to you. >> we're dealing with scattered
6:51 am
showers moving through the bay area. that will be the case as we go throughout the day. taking a look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar on san bruno mountain, giving us high definition of the rain as it moves in the north bay, where we're seeing some of the heaviest rain right now. we've had some really high rainfall totals around novato, san rafael, san anselmo, these areas seeing over seven inches of rain, storm totals over the past 48 hours that heavy rain moving south of petaluma and sonoma, reaching toward napa right now and for the south bay, now the heaviest rain focused over the south county from gilroy to morgan hill. these bright red colors show you where the most intense rain is, and we are still adding up the rainfall totals there. as we talk about how much rain we've seen, over seven inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains, as well as marin, and santa rosa reaching over five inches of rain, but check out san jose. we're struggling here to really
6:52 am
get some decent rain with about a tenth of an inch of rain at the airport and this is very typical of an atmospheric river, where you get the rain shadowed area as well. the coast and the hills get the brunt of that rain. morgan hill getting about two and a half inches, yountville over 2.5 inches. the oakland hills close to an inch of rain now, and it is still coming down. so we will still have a chance of adding up on the rainfall totals that we've already seen, but most of the rain will be light for the rest of the day. very scattered. this is what it looks like going not only from the morning, but later into this evening, and then it starts to clear out by tomorrow morning. we're looking at mostly cloudy skies, cool temperatures, and then another wave of rain coming in early on wednesday morning, and then that's going to produce some more additional rainfall on top of what we've already seen. so the atmospheric river for the most part is pushing to the south, but we'll still kind of wade back and forth between now and wednesday and as we head toward friday a new storm system will be rolling in, bringing us
6:53 am
some rain on friday, as well as saturday, and it looks like it will be out of here in time for sunday. so we're making plans, two dry days we have will be thursday as well as sunday, but in between we have a lot more heavy rain on the way, with temperatures staying on the cool side. upper 50s to lower 60s over the next several days. so we'll be tracking all of that storm by storm. >> you mentioned the atmospheric river, you were teaching me about this earlier, that this is a wintertime only thing. why is it not summer? >> for the bay area it's winter. it is out there and goes north and south deading on where the jet stream is. we call it the atmospheric river or pineapple acaexpress, the lo line of clouds from hawaii to the bay area. we call it the pineapple express, a narrow band of some rain as well as usually high wind that follows the jet stream and it's right over the bay area producing that rain.
6:54 am
and so while we get rain, we know that we also see snow in the sierra and the fact the atmospheric river is basically only about 200 to 400 miles wide but can extend out about 1,000 miles and for us it brings us about 30% to 40 50% of our year rainfall. unfortunately climate change has warmed the temperatures within the atmospheric river and causing most of our precipitation to fall as rain. that means less sierra snowpack, less water storage for the bay area and that's something we'll continue to monitor but the last one, its first one of the season, but the one we just had actually brought in decent amount of snowfall for the sierra. i'll be tracking that and we'll also talk about what's happening in our seven-day forecast, that's coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. thanks, kari. 6:54. montana governor steve bullock ending his presidential campaign. the announcement happened overnight. the 53-year-old democrat entered
6:55 am
the race in may, filed for the new hampshire primary less than a month ago. bullock pitched himself as to voters as a campaign finance reformer, who could win in red states, but he never caught fire. there are now 16 candidates running for the democratic national convention. next a final check of the storm, including updates from across the bay area. you'll see the impact of the wet weather, see the hardest areas hit. we are back in two minutes. you're watching "today in the bay."
6:56 am
6:57 am
welcome back. 6:57. before you head out the door here are the top stories on "today in the bay." >> we're really talking about the weather. we have a look at our radar that's powered by storm ranger.
6:58 am
it's raging out there still. >> look at morgan hill, one place where roads are still soaked this morning. you want to be very careful out there. this is a look at some of this, a live look and a drive earlier on 101 between san jose and morgan hill. the extreme south bay picking up two inches of rain over the weekend. be careful. there are lots of puddles out there. also some video this morning of a roof leak at regional medical center in san jose. staff scrambling to move equipment as the rain pummeled the roof, spilling into the hospital below. so there's quite a mess there. and a live look at sfo, the latest round of wet weather impacting your travel this morning. so far, 15 cancellations, but that number is expected to rise. 164 cancellations yesterday. some of those due to bad weather elsewhere. already this morning, some arriving flights are being delayed by close to three hours. the storm itself making for slow going if you're driving to or from the sierra.
6:59 am
a live look from interstate 80, there you go. not far from donner's summit, looked like they're traveling through right there, but we have to tell you, there is that chain requirement from just below blue canyon to the state line. about two feet of snow fell in that area. the chp says despite heavy volume of holiday related traffic yesterday drivers paid attention to the chain warnings and crashes were kept to a women. let's get a check of the weather. is it getting better or worse? >> it's getting better. we're seeing the atmospheric river moving south of the bay area so we're still going to be left with scattered showers today, we'll also have a little bit of a break by tomorrow morning, another round moving in late tomorrow evening that will continue into wednesday. so even though you see a lot of rain icons on there, it's not going to be raining the entire time. more breaks on the way. >> big problem cal train not running through sunnyvale. >> stopped around mary between the sunnyvale and mountain view stations.
7:00 am
there was a person on the tracks who was hit. don't know the condition of that person. i know trains are not running so we'll continue to follow that. i'll update on twitter and our breaking news. >> we have a local news update at 7:25 and every half hour after that. >> of course our 11:00 news as well, we'll see you then. have a wonderful monday. good morning, perfect storm, a nasty mix of snow and ice on some of the busiest travel days of the year, and it's gridlock coast to coast travelers stranded at airports and on the road. more than a foot of snow expected in parts of the northeast, expected to a to the mystery today. we'll have the very latest. no show, overnight, president trump says he won't participate in this week's impeachment hearing and washington braces for the release of the house report, expected to make the case for the president's removal. we're live at the white house. online again. >> i'm terrified to make this video. >> lori loughlin's daughter posts her first video since her parents were indicted in an
