a very good tuesday morning to you. taking a live look outside. overlooking san jose. a break from the storm, at least this morning if you're headed out the door. just got a look at the forecast. a very good morning to you. i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has this day off. it was drier driving into work. >> that's nice. it's going to be a little bit of a break before we see more rain coming in later on. so right now, as you head out the door in walnut creek, we're not seeing any heavy rainfall. just a couple of sprinkles and light patchy fog as we go throughout the day. we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds and our temperatures staying on the cool side. we're in the low 50s heading out

the door. upper 50s throughout the day. as we take a look at storm ranger, still some scattered light rain here and there. but once again, a break in between heavier rain. i'll track that for you in a few minutes. mike, you have a couple of crashes clearing. >> yeah. just like the skies you're showing, changes in place for the commute as well. a nice smooth drive. green, including thewee lookinga oakland. south 880 and broadway. it's in the clearing stages. should be no problem. no slowing there. we have this crash that cleared. south 101 outside of the robin williams tunnel. there may be more flashing lights or might see sensor lines. here's a live look. damp roadways. just be careful. back to you. >> thanks, like. >> pedal to the metal when it comes down to -- >> wait times by half of what

they were last year. starting out with good news, sharon. >> reporter: that's right. there were so many complaints and so much negative press that apparently new leadership created this quick turn around. the sacramento b reports that walk-ins were cut to 20 minutes. the bee found that the dmv met the goal but in the bay area and loong less, wait times, of course, still hovered around 20 minutes, at times 58 minutes in the l.a. area. there's concern about the real i.d. deadline coming up next year in october. drivers will be flocking to the dmv in the coming months to get that done so they can still use their driver's license with real i.d. to get into federal buildings and on to flights. so the dmv is urging people to come on in as soon as possible to get your real i.d. done.

reporting live in walnut creek. i'm sharon ckatsuda. a dramatic smash and grab seen first on nbc bay area. so that was intentional. after the crash, the thief quickly emptied cases in los altos. as the report says, it's been hit several times in the same way. surveillance video shows the first smash. then another and finally a third as thieves barge through the front wall of marcel jewelry in los altos using a stolen truck. >> destroyed everything. probably two or maybe even three. they took off. >> the men used tools to break the shelves. some jewels were taken and you

could hear the alarm and voices in the video. the owner didn't want to be identified for fear of retaliation. but he says when he arrived, the truck was still there because it got stuck. it's the third time they've been broken into in the four months. but this was the boldest. another angle shows the truck drive up to the store followed by what appears to be a white bmw used as a get away car. >> very little satisfaction from the police. they took a report and left. left us there with the window wide open. >> several other stores and restaurants have had break-ins or thefts. they want police to take the crimes more seriously. >> they say they don't have enough staff. maybe, maybe not. we pay enough taxes. >> he's so sick of the burglaries at his store, he may close up for good. >> it's time for me to move on anyway and my family. >> ian cole, "today in the bay." >> that's a small business there. authorities in the east bay still looking for some of the

people seen in this black friday melee who they say beat an off-duty chp officer unconscious. investigators say the officer stepped in to help someone who helped -- she believed they had stolen. it happened at the mall in emeryville. other shoppers say they weren't surprised by all that violence. >> when there's such disparities in terms of income and wealth and opportunity and access, so yes, i'm not surprised at all that something like that happened. >> emeryville police did arrest two juveniles in connection with the assault. they're still trying to identify at least five other people. 4:35. a live look at capitol hill where hours from now, house lawmakers are expected to hold a vote to keep the impeachment hearings moving forward. they're voting whether to send its report to the judiciary committee. it's considered a formality. it will like break at party lines. democrats are expected to say

headquarters. wall street could extend the losses this morning after president trump says may be better to wait after the 2020 election to make a trade deal with china. stocks falling yesterday on rising trade tensions. also weaker than expected report on u.s. manufacturing. the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 had the worst day in nearly two months. the watch list. automakers report sales numbers. may slap tariffs on more than $2 billion in imports of french champagne, cheese, handbags and other goods. the government has determined that france's new digital services tax would hurt u.s. tech companies, including facebook, apple, google and amazon. they were spared from 25% tariffs until earlier this year, including wine, handbags. they're all lower in europe on the news. shoppers were pointing and clicking and buying quite a bit

i had that inflatable snowman in the front yard. it's staked down because it's been so windy. so we're going to see still some spotty rain, especially this morning. we're seeing also some rain off the coast as we track it all with storm ranger. our mobile doppler radar. as we go into the rest of the morning. we're still seeing moisture from this area of low pressure across the region. the bulk of the atmospheric river has pushed to the south and it's kind of dried out as it moves over l.a. we're seeing the clouds rolling by there. looking back at how much rain we had just on saturday in kentfield. they had 7.5 inches of rain. santa rosa, getting about 5.25. in san jose, a little over a half inch of rain. dublin, .75 inches. over an inch of rain in oakland and in the santa cruz mountains,

about 8.5 inches of rain. that was a pretty good soaker. but look at the sierra. the seven-day snow totals we had in some resorts, okay, i'm sure they're opening today. we're going to see over 7 feet of snow on the ground in kirkwood. this all fell in a period of a week. squaw valley getting over 6 feet of snow. sugar bowl over 5 feet of snow. it's good to see that. we do have more rain in the forecast. we start out with some mild temperatures this morning. mostly some lower 50s across the bay area heading into the low 60s. it's about average. this is about where we should be this time of year. reaching 62 in san jose. 59 in san francisco. up to 65 today in santa rosa. going into the rest of the afternoon, you might still want to keep the umbrella handy. rain chances will be up to about a few spotty showers. then we'll see our next round of rain.

by this time tomorrow morning moving from south to north. so most of the rain is going to be from the golden gate bridge on south. then another more significant storm arrives on friday. once that gets here, it's going to give us a lot more rain and into the start of the weekend. the potential of getting a big soaker from thursday to friday. another two to possibly 3 inches of rain. it's going to keep it soggy from late thursday night throughout the day from off and on friday and throughout the day on saturday. it does dry up on sunday. mike, you're taking a look at the view from hayward. >> little bit, kari. >> the taillights are the same. we got a warning about winds across the bridge. today much calmer as kari is talking about. just a warning.

watch the off ramps especially. may be will puddles and slicker conditions. we showed you the san mateo bridge. there's the dumbarton bridge. we're holding steady with slowing out of the altamont. toward livermore. everything is at speed through the castro valley y. the earlier crash has completely cleared south of that robin williams tunnel. we did see a puddle or two in the shot. walnut creek, driving towards the bay bridge right now, our partners at waze time it at 20 minutes. a mild build until about 6:00. then the traffic really kicks in. by 6:00, you're doubling that time to 40, 45 minutes and then worse through the bulk of the morning commute. right now, richmond-san rafael bridge getting most of that traf there. these folks in the right cash lane, looks like that's the only one open.

look at that. i spotted it. >> have to watch out for those. mike. not sure if a wet road played a role in this deadly car crash in san jose. as you can see from the video, speed did play a factor in it. at least that's what police were reporting to us. after slamming into a tree yesterday, that happened on meridian avenue. witnesses say the crash sounded like an explosion. the driver has not been identified. 4:50. faulty maintenance by pg&e and the failure to inspect transmission lines have been cited for the deadliest fire in california history. more than 80 people died last year when the camp fire roared through butte county. state regulators issued a new report that says crews lastorme the power line that failed back in 2001. inspection would have eventually broke, then led to that fire.

4:50 right now. legendary oakland raider george atkinson is suffering new heartbreak with word that his son george iii died at the age of 27. it comes one year after george's twin brother josh took his own life. this family photo shows the twins when they were standouts at grenada high school in livermore. both played at notre dame and both experienced mental health issues. so far in this case the cause of death has not been given. the raiders are not commenting. a new push under way to boost cleaning efforts on some san francisco dirty, dirty streets. sidewalks in the tenderloin are pressure washed once a month. they're going to change that to once a week. this is thanks to a new plan by a group called tenderloin community benefit district which we'll talk about that new program today. our investigative group has done extensive reports on dirty and diseased streets. to watch the reports, visit nbcbayarea.com. a whole lot of stuffing and
