a slight wind effect also so it might be a little colder than that but it is dry. that will soon change perhaps by the evening commute up here in the santa cruz mountains and all of northern california is bracing for what is expected ahead this evening, and into saturday morning up here. one of the areas of concern is south of salinas, highway 101 between chular and gonzalez. on wednesday floodwaters forced the closure of the highway in both directions. several cars got stuck in the flood as drivers hope to make it across. crews made some emergency repairs yesterday but there are no guarantees that the area won't flood again. so be aware if you're headed to southern california, including my hometown of greenfield on highway 101. another area of concern is up north in sonoma county. the area around the kincade fire will soon be under a flash flood watch. that watch begins early tonight and lasts into saturday morning with the heavy cold front

we're there for the central parts of the sierra. the snowpack is where it should be at 103%. more snow is on the way but it does start out as some rain and you'll only see that snow as you go above 5,000 feet. we are going to start to see it come in this evening, tomorrow morning. some scatter the snow showers coming through and the snow levels will start to drop on saturday into sunday with the potential of getting about two feet of snow in some of the ski resorts. we'll be talking about rain in the bay area coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. be sure to be careful if you're headed out there. follow kari on facebook, twitter and instagram, posting updates to the forecast so you can see them while you are on the go. san jose firefighters posted photos of a rather unusual rescue. they say somehow that driver there crashed his car own a levee in the alviso slew past the field. an off road vehicle to h to get

we're going to get real snow in the sierra and a mix of rain with snowflakes especially for later today into tomorrow. right now as we track the storm on storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar showing we're starting out with dry conditions but the rain is close by, just off the coast. so many people asking is this an atmospheric river? we see here is the center of the storm, it is not connected to that deep tropical moisture coming from hawaii, but it will still bring in some significant rainfall totals, we're looking at san jose getting up to an inch of rain, and much higher comments headed to the north bay, about two to three inches. we'll track that. i'll take you hour by hour with at rifle of the storm coming up. mike, you're looking at oakland to see some improvement on the roads. >> we can kind of see that, kari. i'll stay clear, the lanes are filled in. the metering lights were turned on at the regular time because of an early crash in san francisco. look at the movement in the

6:16 am
shows the median price of a home in santa clara county fell 6% year over year. the new median price just slightly over $1 million. it's $1,008,000. median is tricky. it means the middle of course, equal number of houses sold above and below. the median price can go down if fewer mansions are sold, for instance. that 6% is enormous. that might not sound like much, you wouldn't buy a pair of shoes that were on 6% sale but 6% in the financial world is gigantic. that said, that doesn't get us very much closer to affordable, right? oh look, house prices are down to only $1 million. that's again median, and that's in santa clara county. >> the million-dollar homes they're like small. >> you have h that your friends come out, this is a million-dollar home. >> how much do you think this house is? >> that's a fun game. >> thanks, scott.

area, the rain kind of holds off until later not reaching san jose possibly until 9:00 to just after 9:00 tonight, as we get that rain shadow effect but still looking at some waves of rain coming in, even into tomorrow afternoon, and where we do see that rain it may be heavy, but the possibility of some thunderstorms and the winds are going to be high, all throughout this time that we are going to see this rain falling and we take you through sunday morning, still some waves of rain coming in, but it will start to taper off as we head throughout the day on sunday. so we are going to have some significant rainfall totals. for more on that we head to vianey arana, going to give us a look at what we're expecting here. >> that's right. you took them through the time of the rain but how much rain are we expected to see in the bay area? it's not right now but as we head in toward saturday and sunday if we could pop up some of the rain totals i could give you a good idea. to the north bay three-plus

6:31 am
>> yes, and so we're starting out with some patches of fog, especially in the east bay, and in the tri-valley, but as far as the rain we're seeing, it's still well to the north of us, and it will be several hours before most of us see that rain, but it is going to affect some of our weekend plans especially later on this evening. so we can see the initial line that's way ahead of the upper level low that's still off the coast, but this works its way through. there will be a break and then the rest of the storm will be coming through. so we're going to see it coming in waves. as we go into the morning, we're still dry, but then we take you through 3:00 this afternoon when start to see the rain rolling into the east bay and the rest of the bay area. we may not see it in san jose until after sunset this evening. i'll have more on what to expect and some weekend events going on as well. but right now, mike, you're tracking a new crash. >> i am, kari, in oakland. a live look past the coliseum, the volume of traffic and traffic is bogging down at high

street. i see some of the sensor slowing on our wide view of the map. the crash reported on the southbound side might be in your slow lane, shouldn't be visible from the northbound side, that's why i'm concerned we see the northbound slowing. we'll continue to track that critical area of oakland. 580 and the rest of your approach toward the bay bridge looks great. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on. we have early backup there, and sort of holding steady right now. south bay and peninsula look great. the fog is another major issue. you have breaking news, kris. >> i have the breaking news, mike, i'll take it from here. we'll get back to the florida peninsula, the panhandle. the active shooter situation now over this was at the naval air station in pensacola. here is what we know so far. the shooter is dead along with another person. several other people have been hospitalized. we want to let you know the hospital where the victims are being treated naval air station pensacola is a very large base in the southeast. it's home of the blue angels. this is the second active

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in walnut creek this morning, sifting through all the local numbers. a lot of folks might be surprised to hear not all of those people of the victims are riders. >> reporter: correct, kris. surprisingly about half of the victims are drivers. roughly the other half the passengers. we're learning this from an 48-page internal report just put out by uber. take a look at your tv screen for the numbers. between 2017 and 2018 uber reported just under 6,000 reports of sexual abuse during rides for the two years.
6:34 am
there were about four reported rapes per week or 1 in 5 million rides. a slightly higher number of attempted rapes. around 1400 to 1500 reports of groping, during each year and hundreds of reports of unwanted kissing, sometimes on the breasts, rear end and on the mouth. now according to a study, uber banned more than 40,000 drivers in the u.s. over the past two years for a variety of reasons, including sexual misconduct. continuous background checks revealed problems in a number of those cases. uber will be sharing the names of the drivers with other ride sharing companies. another revelation from the report, uber's aware of law enforcement's involvement in just 37% of the reported rape cases. here is uber's chief legal officer in an exclusive interview with nbc news. >> the number seems kind of low to me, just 37%? >> i'll tell you, one of the facts about sexual assault is
6:35 am
that it is a very underreported offense. uber shouldn't make that choice for survivors. survivors should make that choice for themselves. >> it also opened up the possibility that uber is aware of someone who potentially raped someone else who is out in the public without involving law enforcement. >> as someone who is a former law enforcement official, i understand the tension. we have lots of information about an incident that we will share with law enforcement if we get the consent of the victim. >> reporter: uber's also announced new safety features for riders, including the ability to text 911 from their app, unique p.i.n. codes from their rides and on trip reporting. reporting live in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob, for going through all the numbers. uber's report comes on the heels of new allegations against rideshare competitor lyft. 20 women claimed lyft allowed drivers to continue after they were accused of sexual assault.
6:36 am
a few months ago, 14 other women sued lyft because of similar claims. lyft says it launched more than 15 new safety features including criminal background monitoring. san jose police are looking for two men tied to a series of armed robberies targeting u.p.s. drivers. this security video shows one of the recent thefts which happened tuesday and wednesday, you see a man quickly run from the parked u.p.s. truck near beech grove court and banana grove lane in south san jose. police believe the same two men were involved in two other similar recent crimes. in each of the cases police say the robbers held the driver at gunpoint while they grabbed packages. witnesses describe the getaway car as a black or dark colored honda sedan. 6:36. new developments this morning in south florida after dramatic and deadly shoot-out that played out during yesterday's busy rush hour. it left two innocent people dead, two jewelry store thieves

also dead. now the video that we want to show you gives you an idea of the chaos that unfolded. [ sirens ] witnesses say it just seemed like that gunfire was never going to end. the shoot-out happened in miramar, 20 miles north of coral gables. two gunmen robbed a jewelry store and hijacked a u.p.s. truck with the driver inside. the truck got caught up in traffic and that's when the gunfire erupted. the u.p.s. driver died in that as did a bystander who was hit by the gunfire. one witness described trying to protect his young son as that terrifying scene was unfolding. >> i was freaking out, just focused on protecting my son basically, holding him down,

trying to look behind and around to make sure there was know other shooters, anything like that. >> nbc identified the u.p.s. driver as 27-year-old frank ordonez, he was the father of two little girls. right now police are still trying to piece together how the bystander died in that chaos. 6:38. beware as you head out to fill up your tank but contra costa county. it's going to be painful. contra costa county has the second most expensive gas in the bay area according to aaa. the county's average price for a gallon of gas is $3.80. top of the list of course san francisco county at $3.94 a gallon. a utah man is caught playing the trumpet while driving on the interstate. look at that. 13-year-old girl was riding with her family -- >> what? >> -- she saw this happened and pulled out her phone last month. the video of course went viral. it's been revealed the man is a local. many people say he habitually

6:40 am
the other side and raise the center divide in the area that will contribute to the spectator slowing, won't discourage spectator slowing. the surface street traffic you see the jam up at about ten minutes taking 880. eastbound 580 away from the bay bridge that's clear as is the rest of the bay for the speeds. notice the big orange blob is how i interpret fog. >> okay. we're going to be interpreting a lot of rain for the evening commute but the weekend also going to be raining. >> it's going to be off and on with the waves of rain coming in, and i know for a lot of people it starts today. you're trying to make some plans, but for most of us, that rain doesn't arrive until later on this afternoon and into the evening. here we are taking it in to 7:00 and the rain is moving into the north bay, and then approaching the south bay later on this evening, and pretty much off and on all throughout the day tomorrow. we'll see some rain passing by at times, and temperatures reaching into the mid-50s for the coast, and some low 60s for the inland areas.
6:41 am
on sunday, the rain starts to move out, mostly after the morning, so we are going to catch maybe an opportunity or two to get out to some of those outdoor activities you've been missing out on. i know the winter festival is happening in redwood city tomorrow and throughout the day, once again off and on rain, so that may be something you want to check out, also christmas in the park on sunday, that's the better day to get outside. if you're going to the sierra, we're going to see some rain and snow but most of it does hold off until later on this evening so you have a travel window between now and this evening, and even though it starts out as rain, it will change over to snow with lowering snow levels down to about 6,000 feet into tomorrow. checking out what's going to happen in russian river valley, once again soggy there, temperatures in the upper 50s and then it will taper off sunday. we'll track that and today's temperature trend and a look at storm ranger coming up in the forecast in about three minutes.

6:49 am
mudslides and rock slides as a charred landscape is heavily saturated by now. another area of concern is south of us highway 101 between chulr and gonzalez. wednesday floodwaters forced the closure of highway in both directions. crews used yesterday to dry off and make repairs, emergency repairs, but there are no guarantees that the same thing won't happen again. so be aware if you're headed to southern california tonight and into tomorrow, as highway 101 south of salinas remains a concern for those traveling in that direction. here in the south bay at the levi's stadium pac-12 championship begins at 5:00 today and so make sure you plan ahead. it will be cold, and you might get through with no rain, but be prepared in any case. we're live along themountains, trujillo, "today in the bay." >> they're used to the rain and

area tomorrow, bringing us round after round of rain, but we will have some breaks in between, so here is how it looks for us. as we time it out, here we are at 3:30 this afternoon, and still most of us aren't seeing any of that rain but then quickly as we head toward 6:00 to 7:00, the radar starts to fill in especially for the north bay and parts of the peninsula, still not raining in the south bay yet but that will start to close in, as we could start out with the rain shadow in san jose, but elsewhere we'll start to see the scattered showers moving in. even in to tomorrow morning, there will be some braeneaks ine rain and staying the heaviest over parts of the north bay, if you're making plans for tomorrow afternoon, it looks pretty wet for most of us, with some gusty winds, and with the ground already saturated, we'll have the concern that we could see some downed trees, even into tomorrow evening. it's off and on with the rain until about sunday morning, when we'll quickly see everything starting to clear out. now during this time, we're looking at some pretty
6:52 am
significant rainfall totals so right now head over to vianey arana tracking how much rain we'll get. >> you saw we have damian trujillo in the summit santa cruz area, expected to be one of our highest rainfall totals, over three inches through there but check out the north bay, a little over three inches up through ukiah. santa rosa just over two and a half inches. in through san anselmo and napa area as well nearly two and a half inches. the rest of the bay area just over an inch in san francisco as well as san jose just a little over an inch, but it will be enough where you'll feel it because this is extended according to our euro model expected to see through sunday. this is a three-day rain total. the rain will start from the north spreading to the south so this is going to be a number we'll be monitoring closely. the north bay and the santa cruz mountains expected to be the heaviest in terms of the rainfall totals. let's send things back over to kari. >> we're going to see things drying out once the storm system moves out especially late on
