dreyer, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning to you and thank you for joining us on this saturday morning. >> yeah, big group out there, 34 degrees here in new york but the crowd -- >> that tree draws in a lot of people. >> we'll go say hi in a few moments. authorities today trying to figure out if friday's attack on a naval base in pensacola was an act of terror. sources say the gunman was a saudi national who was training on the base. nbc's blayne alexander is outside the base in pensacola. blayne, good morning. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning to you fbi agents have been working through the night to process what they're calling a very large crime scene that's work that still continues this morning here and so far officials have not released a motive this morning questions swirling about the fatal attack at naval air station pensacola. was it a terror attack >> we are not prepared at this hour to confirm what may have

motivated the shooter to commit this horrific act today. >> law enforcement sources tell nbc news the shooter was mohammed al shamrani, a saudi national on base for training. a twitter account with the name of the shooter posted a message writing that america is a nation of evil. nbc news has been unable to verify whether the account is real the fbi says its investigation is just beginning. >> their work is going to be methodical and it will not and cannot be rushed. >> reporter: overnight officials would not release the names of the three people killed and eight wounded. friday's emergency calls came just before 7:00 a.m >> shots appear multiple times someone unconscious right now. >> reporter: when officers arrived, they found the shooter in a classroom building and exchanged gunfire, ultimately killing him.

two officers were hit but expected to survive. the scene was like something out of a movie. >> you're stepping over bloody glass and there are bodies there. >> reporter: president trump said he received a phone call from the saudi king. >> the king said that the saudi people are greatly angered by the barbaric actions of the shooter and this person in no way, shape or form represents the feelings of the saudi people who love the american people so much. >> reporter: on the busy military base of more than 23,000, the sheriff says the two deputies saved lives by acting when they did. >> thank god they're alive. >> reporter: and, guys, another big question, of course, will be about security, and specifically how was he able to get a gun on base remember, they are not allowed i asked officials about that while they wouldn't go into details about the security measures, they say that they do hold active shooting drills

regularly to prepare for something like this. peter and sheinelle. >> blayne alexander, thank you. let's bring in ken dilanian right now, an nbc news national security correspondent ken, good morning. >> good morning, peter. >> so, ken, investigators are trying to sort out a motive here, whether in fact this was terrorism. how is the fbi handling this investigation? >> well, peter, our sources are telling us they have not yet established a motive but of course are not ruling out and can't rule out that the shooter was motivated by jihadi terrorism. to determine that they're going to interview his classmates in the training program a source told me that six of his saudi classmates were detained for questioning almost immediately after the shooting and then, of course, they will want to interview all known associates in the united states, family members in saudi arabia, and scrub any social media accounts for any kind of clues to this person's state of mind here. >> of course today we're learning new details about this man. he was a member of the saudi air force. he had been here the last two

years at pensacola training as part of the flight school there. he's not the only one to do this this isn't unusual we reached out to the pentagon and they tell us nationwide there are more than 5,000 foreign nationals training in similar programs they come from more than 150 countries. there are more than 800 from saudi arabia alone in particular, what are they doing to vet these foreign nationals who are here in similar programs >> great question, peter this is a long-standing relationship between the u.s. military and the saudi military. the first line of vetting is the saudi kingdom itself the saudis know they have a problem with extremists. it's not in their interest to send questionable people over to the united states and compromise that relationship. of course they may have further vetting to do. the state department would also vet anyone who gets a visa to come to the united states. we are told that the department of defense has some sort of investigate program for foreign national trainees that includes checking against databases for

criminal records, terror associations but no vetting is perfect. we can look to our country and the boston marathon bombing where the fbi visited one of those people and was unable to determine that they were headed down a path of radicalization, so vetting is an imperfect process. >> lawmakers calling for a review of the investigate process. this comes amid tensions between the united states and saudi arabia how does this further complicate that relationship? >> it certainly does complicate it, peter, but president trump offered ameasured response to this we are hearing from lawmakers expressing concerns about the idea of saudis training here of course this presents echos of 9/11 where 15 of the hijackers were saudis. if there's no wider conspiracy here and this person acted alone, it stands to reason this will not significantly affect the military relationship

between the united states and saudi arabia. >> ken dilanian, thank you. also this morning questions swirling in florida about how police handled that deadly confrontation this week taking down two robbers who led them on a half-hour police chase in a stolen u.p.s. van. the driver was killed in the shootout along with another motorist and the two robbers morgan chesky is live with the latest morgan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the family of that u.p.s. driver is raising some of the biggest questions now into police protocol that 27-year-old killed in that deadly crossfire caught on camera, his father telling me he'd still be alive if things were handled differently we do want to warn you some of the video you're about to see is disturbing a swarm of police, two armed men and bullets flying in the middle of miami rush hour the wild shootout left four people dead, but this morning the south florida police union is standing by their officers. >> the officers did not want to kill nybody.

they didn't want to take the bad guys' life when you're faced with no other situation than to return fire when being fired upon, it's very difficult nowadays being a police officer. >> reporter: the response coming amidst criticism from the family of the u.p.s. driver taken hostage and later killed in the fatal crossfire. the deadly gun battle caught on camera as two men identified as lamar alexander and ronnie hill led police on a nearly 30-mile chase thursday, the suspects accused of trying to rob this jewelry store just before taking the driver hostage it was witnessed by his family on live television as he was caught in the deadly gun battle between the suspects and police. >> devastation is the key word. >> his stepfather blaming the police for his son's death calling the response reckless. >> they didn't care for the life of the victim, for the life of a hostage. they didn't care for that life. >> reporter: but union head steadman stall says it's not

police but the robbery suspects who should be blamed. >> they walked in shooting the store owner engaged them in a gun fight. they were going down the turnpike shooting at officers first. they started the whole thing. >> reporter: and this morning, 13 officers from right here at miami-dade police department are now on administrative leave. but important to note, that is standard protocol any time an officer discharges their weapon. >> morgan, thank you. president trump will not take part in the next impeachment hearing taking place on monday. that is the word from the white house counsel. saying the democrats are wasting america's time and calling the proceedings completely baseless. nbc's kelly o'donnell, my colleague, is at the white house with more this morning kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. the president's team is saying no no to participating, no to mounting a defense in the house, no to everything that has to do with the house impeachment inquiry. and even urging democrats to end that inquiry now the white house war of words,

blasting the impeachment inquiry as completely baseless officials say the president will not participate as the house judiciary committee holds another hearing monday and prepares specific allegations against him. friday the president, usually eager to engage, ignored questions about whether he would accept chairman jerry nadler's invitation. >> thank you all very much >> how do you plan to respond to jerry nadler -- >> reporter: the white house counsel's one-page letter friday to chairman nadler claimed democrats have wasted enough of america's time with this charade. you should end this inquiry now and lashed out at speaker pelosi. >> i am asking our chairman to proceed with articles of impeachment. >> reporter: he noted that pelosi made that call before your committee has heard a single shred of evidence bottom line, the white house is

choosing to not mount a defense in the house, while attacking this process as unjust, highly partisan and unconstitutional. chairman nadler responded. the american people deserve answers from president trump, and he rejected white house complaints having declined this opportunity, he cannot claim that the process is unfair the president, wanting the last word perhaps, tweeted back at the democratic chairman. nadler hasn't had a single fact witness testify, zero substance. country wants growth, not impeachment. also new this morning, there is a prisoner swap involving an american citizen, princeton graduate student who has been released in switzerland and, according to officials, the united states had been working with switzerland and president trump this morning in a statement saying to swiss partners for helping bringing about this release and an i rain

the deal still requires court approval. and a victory in court for tesla ceo elon musk. on friday a los angeles jury rejected a defamation lawsuit filed by a british cave explorer who helped in the rescue of those thai boys last year. musk tweeted and deleted a post calling the explorer a pedophile after the man criticized musk's offer to sending a submarine to rescue the boys. taking a look outside right now, dylan is here with your weekend weather. dylan, good morning. >> good morning, guys. we've got a storm that's moving into the west coast bringing lots of rain from seattle down into l.a this is going to turn into a storm that's going to take its time crossing the country. as we go into monday, we're going to see warm enough air to produce all rain but we could see rain from michigan all the way to the east coast heavy at times. the extreme northern edge could get a little snow but it's the rain we're focused on. tuesday up and down the east coast we're looking at heavy

rain and then lake-effect snow will kick in we could see 1 to 3 inches of rain with some of the higher amounts across southern new england. before that moves eastward we'll get a nice warmup through the middle of the country, temperatures running 5 to 15 degrees above average. going into tomorrow that warmer air tries to trickle to the east st. louis close to 60, indianapolis 51, nashville almost 60 degrees. look what happens behind that cold front temperatures drop 5 to 20 degrees below average. minneapolis/st. paul 30 degrees below average with a high of negative 1 on wednesday. then going into thursday some of those colder temperatures will move east with highs barely above freezing 25 in buffalo, pittsburgh only a high o we are expecting a rainy day ahead with the possibility of thunderstorms through the afternoon. right now you can see the sheen on the roads.

working to find a motive for friday's shooting on a naval base in pensacola, florida, which left three dead and eight injured. law enforcement officials say the gunman is a saudi national who was on the base for pilot training authorities are now trying to figure out if it was an act of terrorism that led the gunman to open fire inside a classroom. police have arrested the third of four teens who escaped from a nashville juvenile detention center late last week. 17-year-old morris marsh who is accused of murder was apprehended on friday after a police chase marsh's mother and brother were also arrested. they have been charged with being accessories after the escape meanwhile, the last fugitive, 17-year-old brandon carruthers is still at large. the los angeles lakers earned their 11th road win but check out what happened after a ball got stuck behind the backboard. when a swing on the rim didn't do the trick, lebron james

the new job reports released on the economy is showing that the economy is going strong. and it's creating a problem for some companies trying to find delivery workers. here's jo ling kent with that story. >> reporter: tis the season for giving. with a record $143.8 billion expected to be spent online this holiday season, they are battling to keep up with demand. amazon says they're working hard after previous shipping delays, due to a record-breaking start to the holiday season and recent winter storms. another big problem, a shortage of workers. there's more than 1 million positions that remain unfilled. >> we see job opening outpacing overall ability to fill the jobs. >> reporter: the worker shortage is going from the main street retailers to the open road.

truck driver jobs are waiting to be filled. >> the acute labor shortages are in the temporary hires because people have permanent jobs. we're seeing this hit a tipping point. >> reporter: u.p.s. has hired 100,000 seasonal workers. in some pockets of the country, where unemployment is at its lowest, the company still has open seasonal positions. fedex is hiring 55,000 holiday employees, a 10% increase over last year. retailers are offering extra pay and perks. kohl's giving workers a 15% discount in score. macy's, 20%. temporary work can sometimes lead to big things. saudia started at best buy as a seasonal worker. now, she manages the entire store. >> best buy has great perks for seasonal employees. it's competitive pay and great employee discounts. >> reporter: with six fewer days
