ahhhh! -ahhhh! elliott. you came back! welcome back. by now you likely have heard about the shooting at the pensacola naval airbase on friday. three people were killed and eight others were injured, but lesser known is that this past week there were six other mass shootings with a total of 13 fatalities and 31 injuries. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston rejoins us. it seems that these shootings are approaching epidemic proportions. >> yes, that's because it is epidemic proportions. it's that serious. mass shooting are defined by the fbi as an event where four or more people are killed or wounded.

yes they have become daily event in the united states. mass shootings are so common only the events with unusually large numbers or unusual circumstances receive national attention. the others just get lost in the noise of everyday events. since the beginning of this year alone, 440 mass shootings have taken place over 342 days. so the seven that occurred this past week, well, they're pretty close to what's become what i guess people are calling new normal. >> and the numbers of deaths and people injured each year has got to be staggering if that's what we're looking at within the past week. >> last year 2018 more than 36,000 americans died from gun violence, a lot of people, nearly two-thirds of that number came from suicides. add to that the relatives and the friends impacted by gun violence and the numbers are incalculable and it's not only about lives. a new report by the house representatives joint economic committee finds the cost of gun

violence in the united states amounts to $229 billion annually in medical costs and lost wages and criminal justice activities. you got a mess. >> what is congress doing about this? >> not much certainly in the near term. the last comprehensive gun control legislation was passed in 1994 at that time congress outlawed assault rifles and champion by dianne feinstein but that lawyer had a ten-year sunset provision which was not renewed by congress. since then the flow of assault rifles has been without any restraint whatsoever. the irony is according to a recent fox news poll two-thirds of american supports an assault weapons ban. >> that's interesting. for example what about basic things like background checks as a first step? >> good question.
7:49 am
for the past two decades, members of congress have gone back and forth, authored background checks to see them blocked by one chamber or the other. this year in the wake of some mass shootings harming large numbers of people, the house of representatives did it again, they passed a bipartisan background check active 2019. this allow act took place february 27th. since then the bill resided in the u.s. senate without any action. >> wow. >> all of this transpired despite the fact nearly 90% of the american public and gun owners alike support universal background checks. >> it's just been collecting dust for nine months. >> pretty much. >> what do we know about this gun control issue in california? >> the brady handgun campaign and give ford's law center cite california as exemplary and the state law produced results. california ranks first in gun

on gun supervision is taking root in the states. in 2018, 25 states enacted more than 50 laws in areas ranging from longer waiting periods to bump stock bans. clearly states, states, kira, are no longer waiting for federal action. whether this vigorous legislative effort continues to bring results remains to be seen but we're seeing a shift in who is taking responsibility for dealing with this terrible issue. >> terrible indeed. larry, as always, thanks to you. vianey has the weather, right after this.

west and going to dry us out at least through monday and tuesday, and then tuesday night into wednesday, we have a system that could bring the possibility of some showers but right now the models are showcasing that mainly off to the north and then i'm going to fast forward this into the later portion of the week. by friday and saturday, we have another round of rain, again this one looks more centered towards the north bay, but it could bring rain at times for the coastline and some areas just north of the golden gate bridge as well. so over the next seven days here is the stretch of what you can expect, clearing by tomorrow. tuesday we get that cloud cover. we keep the rain chance mainly to the north wednesday into thursday and notice the temperatures, we're a little bit seasonable in the 60s so it's not going to be too cold. overnight lows dipping down into the 40s. once we get past today's rain, it will start to dry out, headed into monday, but remember, we're starting to really trickle into that active weather pattern so maybe a good idea to keep the storm drains cleared out and get ready for any sort of rain that begins to trickle in by the end
