about, is that right >> reporter: that's right. before that, the democrats in the house judiciary committee meeting one last time to make impeachment, at least the democrats agree on these two articles of impeachment. five sources telling nbc overnight that they are likely to be abuse of power and obstruction of congress. not some of the other charges that we had heard described but, again, it's not final until they are announced. this all comes after a nine-hour-long hearing where both democrats and republicans through their attorneys made their final case >> to coerce a foreign country to help him cheat to win an election is a clear and present danger. >> there is simply no clear evidence that president trump acted with malicious intent. >> donald j. trump, the president of the united states, has put himself before his country. >> they can't get over the fact that donald trump is president of the united states

>> reporter: president trump continues to cthd it's not final after the judiciary committee approves these charges. they still have to come up for a full vote, which as we've been k phillip? >> moving right along. thank you so much. let's turn to breaking news from new zealand officials have released the nationalities of 37 people on white island during this volcanic eruption that killed five people and left eight unaccounted for. nine americans were on the island and at least one american is among the missing nbc's sara james joins us from new zealand. sara, there are growing questions why these tourists were allowed to go near that island to begin with >> reporter: that's right, frances. because, of course, there had been some activity over the last couple of weeks. and there had been a slightly elevated level for the volcanos. so there are those questions

i was at a news conference, however, just a couple of hours ago and the mayor here in the town right near that, only on 18 miles from white island said that she's taken the tour and that this was a company that operated safely for 30 years she also said that families have begun flying in to new zealand from all over the world here to make sure that they can be with loved ones who are undergoing some really horrific times those who survived the burn units in hospitals across new zealand are filled to capacity the prime minister jacinda ardern spoke earlier today and credited the rescues who risked their lives to fly on to the island after two eruptions happened in short succession to bring the victims back to the mainland and she credited them with saving many lives meantime, of course, authorities here want to know more about

what happened and they want to get those who are still on white island off they are hoping that that recovery effort can go on tomorrow it was deemed too dangerous today. frances? >> all right hopefully they'll have better luck with that progress in the days to come sara, thank you. breaking news this morning out of chile a search and rescue mission is under way for 38 missing people. they were on board a chilean air force plan the plane was about six hours into the flight when officials lost contact it disappeared somewhere near the drake passage. there were 21 passengers and 17 crew members on board. no emergency signals were activated. they were headed to inspect a floating pipeline. chile has four bases in antarctica used for climate change research. peter frates has died at the

a choice. >> reporter: >> the bottom like is you're worried about people dying in boeing planes. >> yeah, absolutely into in 2008 pearson went to work for boeing where all the 737s are built. >> the 737 was a magnificent airplane great safety record. were you excited to work for the company and be part of the 737 production >> how could you not want to work for boeing? it's an amazing company. >> reporter: in late 2017, as production of the new 737 max ramped up, ed pearson says he started to see things that alarmed him. >> it was just out of control and it was ridiculous. >> reporter: the race to build the new planes and compete with europe's airbus pushed the production schedule into overdrive, he says instead of 47 planes a month, 52 were being built >> so how much overtime was going on at this point, did it double >> more than doubled you worked seven days straight, you're beat, you know, and you're tired. >> reporter: he says during this period, many people worked

weekend after weekend as there weren't enough engineers and electricians and some of them ended up doing jobs for a perfecstay he sent this email to the head of the 737 team in june of 2018 expressing his concern that workers were inadvertently imbedding safety hazards into our airplanes. i know how dangerous even a small defect can be to the safety of an airplane. he says he urged the boeing manager to shut down the factory for a few weeks to straighten things out. >> and what was his reaction to that >> he said, you know, we can't shut down. i kind of got mad and said i've seen military operations shut down for a lot less. >> what was he rly i'll never f military is not a profit making organization >> what words would you use to describe the factory at that point? >> dangerous unnecessary. taking unnecessary risk. chaotic.

disarray. >> reporter: four months later, a 737 max crashed killing all 189 people on board. >> and the irony that when you wrote that first letter, that lion airplane was on the factory floor. >> it was within our production system at the time when i saw that, that was -- i -- i really can't say. i mean, i don't know how to describe it. i cried a lot. >> did you >> yeah. i'm mad at myself because i feel like maybe i could have done more. >> reporter: over the last several months he reached out to boeing's ceo and their general counsel but felt nothing was being done 19 days after sending this letter to the bogateing board, second 737 max crashed afterwards the 737 max was grounded boeing has acknowledged
