stabbing, who the victim was, what that person's condition is but we know they triggered an amber alert through the chp for a little girl who was taken from san jose right around the same time, 2 years old, bethany carranza, three feet tall, weigh being 30 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes. not a super clear, crisp picture but the most recent picture. san jose police say she was last seen with her father, 24-year-old victor magana, described at 5'4", brown hair, brown eyes, considered armed and dangerous. they were last seen in a light green 2007 hyundai santa fe with license plate 7xjx025. magana, the father, is considered armed and dangerous. if you see that vehicle, that light green hyundai, santa fe or you see the little girl or the father, you are asked to call 911 so they can reunite the family as quickly as possible.

we have breaking news to tell you about, an apartment fire in contra costa county. "today in the bay's" bob redell just got to that scene in antioch and bob, we can see behind you how that fire tajjed that damaged that home. how is it going now? >> reporter: the fire is out, started around 3:30 on the 600 block of west 14th. the origin of the fire was fully involved, fortunately the person who lives there, a man, was not inside and they have not been able to locate him as of yet. they tried to call him but he was not inside and they know he's not inside right now, that he wasn't home at the time or at least they don't believe he was. so this unit caught fire and it spread to two other units next door. one of those units suffered some water damage and the other unit smoke damage. there's five units in total. the other two units, number four and five, they are fine. they're not, they didn't have any damage but the people in the two corner units, a man in the

one and the woman in the other, they are not going to be able to live here so they are the ones that are displaced, trying to get the power back on for the other units so those people could go inside. i was speaking with the contra costa county fire protection district and have them do you have any idea what the cause is? they have an investigator on scene and this is happening at 3:30 in the morning. the fire department had it out within 20 minutes. everyone got out okay, no injuries, just unfortunately you have two people whose units right now, one is destroyed, the other is too damaged to be living there. reporting live in antioch, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> certainly not the way anyone wants to start their morning especially with it being this cold outside. 5:56. expect picket lines this week at kaiser permanente centers up and down the state. thousands of mental health workers are expected to go on a five-day strike starting today. psychologists, therapists and psychiatric nurses did not reach a new contract with kaiser, which has a backlog of mental health patients, some have had

to wait two months for appointments. kaiser says it's working to address the concerns but a strike only hurts patients. later this morning, supportive housing leaders break ground on a new south bay development promising nearly 150 new units including many to house the homeless. the development is going up on corvin drive in santa clara, one block east of lawrence expressway, includes 08 units for people who were previously homeless, the other units for low income renters, expected to open in the fall of 20 1. in an effort to boost housing options in contra costa county, walnut creek and pleasant hill this year, both debating easing rules for so-called granny units, changes include loosening requirements for parking. owners living on site and easing size limitations. the changes would follow similar recent steps taken in cities like san jose. if councilmembers approve the emergency changes, each may take effect immediately. after two delays, crab season is finally in full swing.

it got under way yesterday. this is after it was supposed to start on november 15th. the delays were due to concerns of whales getting tangled in fishing lines. berkeley fishermen say they made an 11,000 pound haul yesterday from a pod new to the area. they say that's about an average but the crab is much bigger this year, which is happy news for san francisco restaurants. >> it's important because it's better to have fresh local crab, fresh local crab from here, from the bay, and people have better prices. >> that is good. that is good. >> so some good news here. experts say due to the fresh catches, you can expect crab prices to go down. >> warm up the butter. live look at interstate 80 near donner summit. hardly anyone out there on the roads but they have heading up with all the recent snow, really

great for skiers and sierra businesses which rely on them. we won't forget the snowboarders as well. over the weekend, resorts including squaw valley got at least a half foot of fresh powder. the timing couldn't be better with the holidays just around the corner. holidays, snow, feels like christmas. >> it looked like a snow globe this weekend, the light snow falling down. it wasn't a big storm and that's what we're expecting as we go through this week, all dry, clear right now, all across the bay area over toward the sierra as well. another system coming in by the middle of the week for the sierra that will bring an additional one to four inches of snow and by the weekend some additional light snow coming down. good to see at least we're adding up on the snowfall totals but nothing significant here. we'll talk about what's in the forecast in terms of rain for the bay area coming up, but mike says it's getting crowded at the bay bridge. >> it is and it will be a significant delay as it builds, but right now it's right on

half moon bay. we have some mid-30s in the north bay, and it will drop a few more degrees around sunshine -- sunrise, so i wouldn't be surprised to see dropping down to freezing this morning, as we watch out for some patchy frost. in livermore it's 37 degrees, and 38 in san martin, and in san jose 40 degrees, as you head out the door. if you're about to step out in oakland, maybe headed to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station you need a heavier coat as our temperatures dip down to about 42 degrees, and then we'll see it gradually warming up today but at least we have the sunshine working in our favor, and it's going to be a nice day, but most of these temperatures about where we should be for this time of year, reaching into the mid to upper 50s and we're also seeing some clear skies for today. tomorrow the clouds start to move in, as this storm system approaches, but it does look fairly weak and as it moves in, early on wednesday, we'll bring in our next round of wet weather. as we take it hour by hour, this

is how it shapes up for us. once again all clear today. tomorrow we see some more clouds but it does stay dry and going into early wednesday morning, we'll start to see some of the rain coming out of those clouds, and we'll start out early wednesday with some waves of rain moving in. we have a possibility of getting anywhere from about a quarter to half inch of rain, some of the higher amounts will be in san francisco and along the coastline. going into the rest of the week we'll see a couple more waves of rain, the first one moving in on wednesday, we're dry on thursday. friday we're also looking fairly dry but late friday night into saturday we'll see our next storm system coming in, just in time for the big 49ers game here at home on saturday. we'll be watching out for the rain chances. mike, you were checking the lightings, light crossing the bay. >> both the lighting and the lights. the lighting is fine. the lights are moving smoothly. the incline it's looking better than it did a few minutes ago because the backup is now the lights at the toll plaza. the metering lights are turned on right at your expected time

although there's a lighter flow of traffic as we talk about toward the end of the year, sliding toward a lighter commute over the next couple of weeks after that, a smooth drive, that crash never materialized as a problem. we'll remove that from the last report. we do have a crash reported on the north side, coming down toward the golden gate bridge, no slowing on the sensors there as well but just a shout out to marin county, we're going to keep checking on that around the sausalito area. a smooth drive westbound across the san mateo bridge picking up a little volume. dumbarton bridge no problems, and if you're driving from castro valley over to san mateo right now, you are just about a half an hour, starting at 6:00 the travel times start to creep up and by 7:00, you've doubled that travel time to over an hour, for that same stretch. so just keep that in mind. right now your timing is great and you can watch a few more reports and stick with us. south bay, peninsula, no major deal. slowing on 280, i think there's a road crew there. i'll double check. we don't want to take anything for granted. starbucks under fire.

deli is expected to appear in court today. 35-year-old ahmet ahadi is facing weapons charges. the phone number and address of the pawn shop he owns or works at was found in the pocket of one of the shooters. three people in that store died along with a new jersey city detective. the two shooters were also killed. happening now w less than a week until the start of hanukkah, police are investigating vandalism inside a beverly hills synagogue. this happened saturday. vandals overturned furniture and damaged several relics. investigators released surveillance photos of the suspect. starbucks is looking into complaints a southern california starbucks refused to serve a pair of sheriffs deputies, thursday at a cafe near uc riverside. the deputies stood at the counter for about five minutes and when no one approached them they chose to leave. starbucks has already issued an apology. a new twist this morning for

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in san jose this morning, she's been following this for us and kris, we understand there's a stabbing investigation possibly tied to this. >> reporter: well, that's true, there is a stabbing investigation and now we can confirm that the person who was stabbed was a woman. her daughter, her 2-year-old daughter, then abducted by the baby's father, her boyfriend and they are now at large. we know that that is what happened here. take a look at the video, the stabbing happened here not too far from san jose state's campus, this is east reed and south 11th street. police were called to reports of a woman screaming, when they got here they found that woman with at least one stab wound. these are life-threatening injuries. she's at the hospital but her 2-year-old toddler is nowhere to be found. there is an amber alert that was triggered by san jose police for 2-year-old bethanie, this is a picture of the little girl, bethany carranza, described at

"today in the bay's" bob redell on the scene, just spoke with residents and what are they telling you this morning? >> reporter: well marcus, actually first i just spoke with the contra costa county fire protection district, a few new tidbits of information. they don't think the fire was suspicious they thknow the caus but don't think it was intentionally set and initially they thought some of the people who live in the small complex might be able to go back home. they're saying all 12 people who live in the five units won't be able to go back. some of the units are damaged and destroyed but the other ones they can't get water restored because of broken fixtures. the fire started 3:30 this morning, a five-unit apartment complex in antioch. two alarms, when firefighters arrived the corner unit was fully involved. they had it out in 20, 25 minutes. a second unit sustained smoke damage, third unit water damage. a frightening experience for several people who live in this

complex. >> sounded like gunshots. >> reporter: what was that sound? >> it was from the window busting out, that's when i woke up. >> what were you thinking? >> i was gunshots, don't look out the window or anything. >> i looked out the window. >> she's like it's a fire! i started screaming. >> reporter: what did you do? >> got everybody the hell out of here. ended up down here just waiting. >> reporter: and everyone's okay? >> yes. still shook up but we're all right. >> reporter: but she is correct, everyone did get out okay on their own, they're okay. the man who lives in this unit where the fire started he wasn't at home at the time. the fire department is trying to reach him. he has arrived within the past 10, 15 minutes, i spoke to him just briefly and he's clearly upset by unfortunately what happened to his home. reporting live in antioch, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> tough morning for them. thank you very much, bob. happening today, activists plan to rally outside of pg&e headquarters in san francisco,

following governor newsom's rejection of a wildfire settlement plan. newsom's decision on friday leaves the utility facing an uncertain future. he styed the settlement did not go far enough to ensure safety improvements. protesters are demanding pg&e make restructuring and safety a priority. organizers say at least 111 californians have died this year due to fires and power outages. happening today, san francisco leaders apeer poised to try to turn over a new leaf when it comes to cleaning up city streets. the most recent hit came last week when oracle's open world decided to move its annual convention to las vegas, citing conditions on city streets as a big reason why. our investigative unit spent a lot of time covering the story and its diseased streets series which you can still link to right now under the unit section of our home page. this week, for the first

time, mayor london breed will show off the new waterfront homeless navigation center that opponents contested every step of the way. the san francisco mayor will provide tours of the new $4 million facility, starting tomorrow. the man accused of an attack on the mayor of martinez is tu in court for an arraignment today. police say last thursday, eli dominguez unlawfully tried to make a citizens arrest against the mayor. it happened in front of his insurance business. in the struggle police say dominguez bit a police sergeant, he's facing several charges including battery. the mayor was not seriously injured. a holiday warning from police in palo alto. they're reminding everyone, lock your car doors to avoid grinchs from stealing your holiday packages. police tell "palo alto weekly" they're launching a lock it or lose it campaign. as of the start of the month there were more than 800 car break-ins across the city this

year in addition to 139 thefts from vehicles where car doors were unlocked. compare that with only 70 reported home break-ins. >> palo alto pd, all pd will tell you don't leave stuff visible in your car. put it away or don't take it in your car. it's more of a temptation. looking at the cars themselves, and there are more than over from the richmond side toward san rafael. there is the build for 580 and right on schedule, so are the bay bridge toll plaza and the metering lights. there is an issue, 680 northbound, counter commute there may be a crash or something else going on. i'm checking the chp reports. anywhere south of there looking good with a mild build around the bay. coming off of a nice weekend, we're already think being next weekend. >> yes, we are and it looks like for part of the weekend once again there will be some scattered showers moving through, and that's coming on this upcoming saturday, possibly lingering into early sunday as well.

other reports in the area and time out what waze says, our partners will let you know what to expect. >> thank you, mike. breaking news for you this morning, a 2-year-old girl is taken in san jose. there is now an amber alert for her this morning. police say the toddler was last seen with her father, victor magana. officers are investigating the stabbing at a home near san jose state. the victim is now in the hospital and officers say that bethanie carranza, the little girl, was taken from the home. the toddler and her father were last seen in the light green 2007 hyundai santa fe, and that car has a california license plate, listen to it here, 7xjx025. if you have any information, you're asked to call police and of course we will have more live coverage on this at the top of the hour. this morning in southern california rescuers called off the search for a missing hiker on mt. baldy.

they plan to reevaluate the situation after the death of a search and rescue volunteer over the weekend. the volunteer, 32-year-old tim staples, fell down an ice chute while looking for a man who vanished more than a week ago. the man somehow became separated from the group he was hiking with. now to decision 2020, starting today, senator bernie sanders is making an extended visit to southern california. his tour is supposed to continue all week and include stops in coachella valley, venice and l.a. on friday, he'll attend an immigration rally in san diego county and on society, new york congress ann owe alexandria ocasio-cortez endorsed him in october. a debate scheduled for thursday in california is in danger of being canceled due to a labor dispute. lori loughlin not going down without a fight. she and her fashion designer husband are accusing prosecutors of concealing evidence. they refused to turn over evidence showing the couple believed their payments to usc

we're waking up this morning, heading back to work, time to get back to the money, and we're going to see temperatures in the upper 30s to start out the day, and then as we go into the rest of the day, a slow warmup so you need a heavier jacket, as you step out this morning, and temperatures heading up to 54 degrees in antioch, oakland reaching 56. san jose reaching 57 degrees, but all of these temperatures about normal for this time of year, and so as we're starting out, we are seeing the clear skies, and time to layer up. we are going to need the scarf and the coat and also whatever layers you need to stay warm, as we go throughout the day. and we do have some cool air now, there will be some more rain headed in as we go toward the middle of the week. these clouds moving in and by wednesday morning we're waking up to some rain. we're going to see in terms of how much rain we may measure by early wednesday morning, we may see a half inch of rain in san francisco, as you head inland, a lot of this storm kind of just falls apart but we could pick up

days. brentwood on ice says someone opened the valves to its chiller, causing its ice to melt. it's closed until wednesday and that timing could not have come at a worse time. the owners say saturday's downtown parade was expected to bring in 4,000 skaters. >> we came to a lake this morning. >> i was excited to skate and once we found out it was closed we got really disappointed. >> the rink's owners add that some young women stole a pair of skates friday night. he says police are looking into whether the thieves are linked to the vandalism. >> 5:56. boeing to make a major decision about its 737 max plane as soon as today, trying to decide whether to further cut or suspend production of the plane. the 737 max planes have been grounded since last april following two deadly crashes. last week the faa announced the planes would remain grounded until at least next march.

researchers at ucsf say people who use ecigarettes are at a significantly greater risk of chronic lung disease. researchers tracked ecigarette and tobacco habits in 32,000 people, none with a history of lung disease but the study found ecig users were more likely to develop the disease. using ecigarettes and smoking tobacco is very risky. tomorrow sonoma county leaders unveil an emergency plan to address the homeless crisis focusing on people living along the joe verdada trail. possible short term indoor and outdoor shelters at the county fairgrounds. sonoma county has approximately 3,000 homeless people. there are more electric scooters on the streets of san francisco, part of sf mta's powered scooter program which launched in october. more scooters were placed around the city starting yesterday from

the mission district all the way to san francisco state. the total number of scooters alowed in the city is now more than 3,000. 5:58. the launch of a spacex falcon 9 rocket is hit to help provide broadband access to underserved parts of the world. the satellite tucked inside the nose will settle in space about 22,000 miles above the earth's equator. disney's "frozen" continues to freeze out the competition at the box office. >> "frozen 2" surpassed the $1 billion mark this weekend, it's the sixth disney movie this year to do so. the hotly anticipated sequel to the 2013 blockbuster "frozen" arrived in theaters the week before thanksgiving during its opening weekend. the film brought in $127 million in the u.s. alone.

right now at 6:00, breaking news that we're following for you in the south bay, an amber alert in effect right now for a 2-year-old girl taken overnight in san jose. >> this is the little girl you see on your left, bethanie carranza, and that is her father, to the right. kris sanchez is in downtown san jose, following the story since early this morning, and kris, we talk about a stabbing being connected to this kidnapping in some way. explain that to us. >> reporter: within the last hour, we have confirmed the woman who was stabbed here at this home near downtown san jose is in fact the mother of the child, who is at the center of that amber alert. this happened around 10:00 last night. police were called to the home on east reed and south 11th street about 10:00 last night on reports of a woman screaming. when they got here, they say they found a woman who was
