in washington, alice barr, nbc news >> now the president will face a trial in the senate. majority leader mitch mcconnell is planning to speak about the process on the senate floor later this morning before the trial begins, the house needs to send the two articles of impeachment to the senate, but speaker nancy pelosi says that may not happen right away nbc's tracie potts joins us with the latest from d.c. tracie, give us the reason why this might have a delay. >> reporter: well, because nancy pelosi and the democrats say they first want to guarantee that this is going to be a fair and impartial trial in the senate run by republicans, led by mitch mcconnell who has already publicly said he's both working with the white house, and that he is not impartial on this so nancy pelosi, using sending over the articles of impeachment, as a bit of a stick to try to get the republicans who are running this trial to cave to some of the democrats' demands, to allow witnesses and

some of the other demands and requests that they had for this trial. nancy pelosi, surprising a lot of people after the votes last night, when she said she would not immediately send over those articles of impeachment to trigger the trial. >> we have legislation approved by the rules committee that will enable us to decide how we will send over the articles of impeachment. we cannot until we see what the process is on the senate side. so far we haven't seen anything that looks fair to us. >> reporter: so after rejecting democrats' requests, the plan seemed to be -- the working plan -- to try to start this trial sometime in early january. but democratic aides are suggesting that pelosi may not even send over the articles of impeachment until then back to you. >> wow, it may be drawn out

the moment a 17-year-old girl tried to steal the plane after climbing over a fence and starting one of the engines. but the plane never got off the ground, crashing into the building instead >> the engine is completely ripped off and still smoking >> reporter: police arrested the teenager after they arrived to find her uninjured, still in the cockpit, and wearing a pilot's head set >> the female appeared to be disoriented and was uncooperative with police when she was taken into custody >> reporter: it involved a private plane. no commercial aircraft or passengers were affected planes are often left unlocked overnight and don't require keys to start in august 2018, an airport groundworker in seattle stole a horizon air turboprop, taking it on a joy ride over puget sound >> just a broken guy, got a few screws loose, i guess. >> reporter: richard russell died when he crashed the plane into an island investigators concluded he intentionally took his own life. in fresno, police say there is no indication terrorism is a

motive in a teenager's attempt to steal a plane tom costello, nbc news, washington >> millions of americans in the northeast received an alert about a rare weather event a snow squall taking over manhattan. look at the city time lapse. the huge wall of snow sweeps over new york city making the skyscrapers disappear. it moved through just a matter of minutes and left behind about half an inch of snow in central park this is the first time a lot of people saw warnings about snow squalls. the national weather service only started sending alerts about them last year look at this video taken in pennsylvania it shows just hai quickly whiteout conditions cause visibility on the roads to drop to nearly zero a snow squall there is being blamed for a massive pile up on a highway. at least 20 vehicles were involved in a crash that shutdown this highway. authorities say at least one person was killed and 30 more were injured >> let's toss it over to nbc meteorologist bill karins. i happened to be in times square when this happened
