calling the impeachment one of the most shameful political episodes in history. deeming the articles of impeachment abuse of power and obstruction of congress as illegitimate. for his part, the president tweeting this ominous image, signaling what's likely to be his 2020 rallying cry, the stark black and white photo that reads in reality they're not after me, they're after you. i'm just in the way. spending over two hours on stage, the longest speech of his presidency so far. the president even invoking his 13-year-old son to slam elizabeth warren. >> pocahontas goes to the middle of central park or whatever park, she's in manhattan, you got me, and people, i mean, i could have barron trump go into central park and he would get a crowd that would be just as good. he's 13. he'd get a bigger crowd. >> reporter: but it's a scathing and deeply personal attack aimed at democratic congressman debbie

dingell who took over the seat of her late husband john dingell who has the president drawing sharp criticism appearing to suggest the late congressman had gone to hell. >> take down the flags while you're taking them down, for ex congressman dingell. she calls me up, it's the nicest thing that's ever happened, thank you so much, john would be so thrilled. thank you so much, sir. and so that's okay. don't worry about it. maybe he's looking up, i don't know. he believed in bringing everybody together and believed in our democracy. >> the attack against dingel underscored. he resents the mark it will leave on his legacy. still the president does see the potential political gain clearly already using to energize his base ahead of 2020. back to you.

and you talked about the heavy momentous thing happening in our country. wherever you are on the political spectrum, chuck todd, it's a sad morning in america. what does it all mean? where do we go from here? how much does this really matter in the grand scheme of things? >> well, you know, it depends on how far back you want to pull back the lens here in some ways this is the end of a decade that has been just hyper partisan, hyper toxic, the toxic politics, the mix of social media, you can make an argument that it was almost inevitable our politics were going to end with this kind of show down over impeachment, so in that sense, it sadly feels like a -- almost a predictable next step in this escalation of

a partisan war that now feels like it's obviously gotten too overheated to the point where at times it feels as if culturally we're in a cold civil war. >> you pointed out, we are so deeply divided you put that poll up, americans, according to the poll, evenly split on whether we should be impeaching and whether the president should be removed from office impeachment is only going to deepen the divide. what's the way out >> well, that's a great question, i think the way out is going to be the democracy. this isn't going to come from us in the press it isn't going to come from the elected officials. at the end of the day, it's going to be up to the democracy to sort of break this log jam

here let me say this about impeachment and about sort of the politics of this going forward. i do think we're so focused on the moment there is an election and politically, while the president has gotten to a point where he is able to survive this process, it has not helped his reelection chances. if anything, if you look at our poll, it's clear there are people that are not in favor with impeachment, who also are not satisfied with the job the president is doing. meanwhile, the speaker, nancy pelosi, this idea to withhold the articles of impeachment from the senate that will perhaps delay a trial, what's this strategy here, chuck? >> well, they're trying to have more leverage. they're trying to give chuck schumer the senate democratic leader, who obviously only has so much leverage, since the republicans have the majority, it's an attempt to give schumer more leverage in the think this cuts two ways if the democrats aren't careful here, they withhold this it's going to raise questions that a lot of people raised, why did you sort of pause the investigation when you did, you know, you went to the articles when there were clearly more witnesses to talk to, and you wanted to see some court cases,

so it sort of brings that up, and why do mitch mcconnell this favor. he does not want this senate trial. you're actually doing him a favor. you may be making his politics easier look, he does want this. this is not going to be easy for him to navigate, because he can't just shove a sham trial through. there are six to eight republican senators up for reelection who have to win the votes of people who want this president impeached. think about that, craig, they have to have a trial that looks at least somewhat legitimate for those people like susan collins. >> our political director, chuck todd, thank you, sir. meanwhile, the final democratic presidential debate of the year will be held later tonight and it will have a very different look and feel from the five others that have been held so far in 2019 nbc's geoff bennett joins us from the white house with more on that, and our new poll on where the race stands. geoff, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, tonight's debate in los angeles as you mentioned it's the final democratic debate of the year, and the smallest and least diverse with seven candidates

back taxes or an urgent e-mail to fix your computer anyone who demands payment by a gift card is always a scammer. there have been $74 million in gift card related scams already this year, and the ftc recently issued a reminder for consumers so you don't get ripped off. inspect gift cards before you buy. make sure the packaging is in tact, and the pin is still covered. save the receipt that can be helpful if you run into problems with the card, and treat gift cards like cash once they're used, they're gone. online, the number of scam, marketing and fake web sites has exploded. >> if you're looking at a web site and they're asking you for your personal information before you even decided to do business with them. stop, and don't give them that information. >> one recent scam was so to post a warning on its facebook page, and don't fall for phishing, e-mails posing as

conducted the most rushed, most unfair impeachment inquiry in modern history. >> that historic night is a remarkable split screen as well. supporters in michigan at the very same time the house was voting to impeach him. here is the president. >> by the way, it doesn't really feel like we're being impeached. the country is doing better than ever before. we did nothing wrong. >> also tonight the democratic 2020 contenders, they will debate in los angeles. this will be the smallest and least diverse debate. just seven candidates in all compared to 20 just six months ago. according to our poll joe biden remains in the top spot with 27. 28% behind him. bernie sanders and elizabeth warren. amonos michael bloomberg that already spent millions on ads. back to you.

>> peter, thank you. now to a troubling security breach at an airport in california, authorities are trying to figure out how and why a teenaged girl was able to steal a private plane before crashing it into a maintenance building. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has details. hey, miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, the 17-year-old never got the plane off the ground but she did crash it into the airport in fresno. the incident raising serious questions about the security of private aircraft given the ease with which this teenager was able to get behind the controls and almost fly away. police say this video captures the moment a 17-year-old girl tried to steal an airplane they say she climbed over a fence, got on board the aircraft, and managed to start one of the engines before she could get off the ground, the plane crashed into a maintenance building at the fresno yosemite airport leaving the king air 200 severely damaged >> the engine is completely

ripped off and still smoking. >> the female appeared to be disoriented and was uncooperative with police when she was taken into custody. >> reporter: police say they found the teenager uninjured but disoriented, still in the cockpit wearing a pilot's headset. >> there is no indication of a domestic terrorism related motive. >> reporter: the girl's identity is not being released because of her age. the plane was privately owned, parked in the general aviation area of the airport. officials say the planes are often left unlocked overnight and don't require keys to start. this morning, investigators are asking how and why a teenager came so close to putting herself and others at deadly risk. that teen was arrested for theft of an aircraft she appeared in a juvenile court but no details about her case were released. guys, back to you.
