a very good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i am laura garcia. >> i'm kira klapper in for marcus washington. we'll get to the breaking news in a moment. first a check of our traffic but first weather with meteorologist kari hall. >> yes, we had a lot of fog in parts of the tri-valley and north bay. elsewhere we're seeing clear conditions but very cold temperatures, as you get ready to head out the door. here is a look at what we are now, dropping to freezing right now in santa rosa and in napa, and some upper 30s in concord, as well as livermore. we'll get a look at the rest of our forecast coming up. mike, you're looking at light. >> the bay bridge emeryville camera lights in motion across the bay bridge light show as far as i'm concerned, lights in motion here, no lights and emotion at the bay bridge toll plaza, that cues us this is a holiday light week. we have slower spots for 680 both directions getting toward the walnut creek interchange. the rest of the bay you're good.

back to you. >> all right, mike, thanks. 6:01. back to the breaking news we've been following since we came on air this morning, an air force veteran fighting back overnight in contra costa county, after armed robbers stormed his convenience store. this morning, one of the robbers is dead. >> moments ago that store clerk spoke to nbc bay area's thom jensen and thom joins us again from bay point and thom, we want to warn our viewers again that some of the video you obtained is pretty disturbing. >> reporter: it is. you can see in the video, and we'll roll that surveillance video raw with the sound, a couple of things. you'll hear some bleeps in there, where we beeped out some profanity where the clerk is getting pistol whipped and yelling when this robber, you'll see a white flash. watch as we roll it, about 11:00 last night we're on port chicago highway in riverside in bay point at cam's market, and this is the way it went down, two

>> hurry. don't move. got a gun, bro. >> reporter: even the one who was shot got out of the store. we talked to the clerk, mark kasowit st who worked here about five years. here's what he said went through his mind when he got robbed. >> after i realized you know everything was real, you know, having a big handgun pointed at you, there's only one thing you worry about, your own life. >> reporter: as that video showed, even the man who was shot got outside of the store, he died just around the corner where you see those detectives right now, contra costa county sheriff's detectives on the scene along with the medical examiner's office. the other robber who was in the store the one in the light gray

jacket who had the manager at gunpoint in the back of the store, he got away. they're still searching for that man but mark kasowitz, four years in the air force and 20 years working security detail in the private sector, said that that training really kicked in today and he said he was not only fearing for himself but when that was going down, when the gun went off, the robber who pistol whipped him, his weapon went off and he heard him say "the clerk's got a gun" or something of that nature, you knew there was somebody else in the store and wanted to protect himself and also the manager who was in the store and that's why he fired the shot. the one gunman died in the parking lot just around the corner after he got out of the store and the second one contra costa sheriff's department is still looking for him this morning. we're live in bay point, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> we'll keep following to see if they put out more of a descripti description. thank you, thom. 6:05. members of congress back home for the holiday week, but the battle over impeachment

"today in the bay's" mcfarland reports from washington with the latest. >> reporter: this holiday week democrats and republicans have a wish list. the gop wants a fast impeachment trial. >> i think the president wants to prove his innocence. >> reporter: democrats say speaker nancy pelosi and her party want a trial with witnesses, including key, current and former white house officials. >> i think she's simply trying to make sure that there is an objective trial in the senate as there's supposed to be. >> reporter: the stakes are rising because of revelations about one of the witnesses democrats want to call. newly released documents show former white house budget official michael duffy told the pentagon to withhold aid from ukraine, july 25th, an hour and a half after president trump asked ukraine's president to investigate former vice president joe biden. but as congress returns home for the holiday, both sides are still digging in. >> the charges are pretty thin gruel.

nashville police say the fight that killed 22-year-old clayton beathard, 49er quarterback c.j. beathard's brother, started over a woman. a friend of beathard was also killed, another person was injured, but is expected to be okay. c.j. beathard wasn't there. he's with his family. coach shanahan said he did meet with him. >> he barely could talk, and the last thing he said to me when i walked out the door, he stopped me and goes, you make sure the guys going to win this game. and i didn't want to say that at the beginning, because this game doesn't mean anything compared to his brother. >> reporter: nashville police are looking for three men and one woman seen in this surveillance video for questioning. one man wanted for questioning is 23-year-old michael mosley. police say he was talking to the woman in the bar who was part of this case. beathard is a grandson of hall of famer bobby and his family says that he truly loved kids and the less fortunate. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay."

and right now at 6:09, as we head out the door, we'rriaé÷ go to see still some dense fog in the tri-valley and parts of the north bay. it's the worst in livermore where visibility is cut down to a quarter mile, getting lower in some spots and as we go into the rest of the day, some sunshine, cooler than normal temperatures with highs reaching into the mid-50s for the south bay. in the east bay looking at a high of 54 in walnut creek, 53 in hayward and half moon bay expect a high of 52 and 52 in redwood city, some mid-50s for the mission district only up to about 52 in marina district today and the north bay reaching 53 in sonoma. we'll talk about when the rain returns in the forecast. mike, you have a crash in san francisco. >> i do, few incidents issues but much bigger issue than anywhere else in the bay. fog i want to touch on this as well, just spotted this on the fremont camera, fog coming down

straight week. the s&p on pace for its best december also since 2010. on today's watch list a report on new home sales. as you head out on the roads to see friends and family this week, you may be paying a little less to get there. the average price of gas dipped four cents over the past two weeks to $2.61 a gallon. that is 18 cents higher than a year ago, and the bay area gas is much higher, averaging $3.68 a gallon. analysts say prices are unlikely to continue dropping as retailers around the country face higher costs. if you still have a few more gifts there are options out there. the national retail federation says 13% of americans are expected to buy their gifts on saturday but more than 6% are waiting until christmas eve, so to cater to the procrastinators, stores and malls are opening early tomorrow and many will close by dinnertime. amazon is offering same-day delivery christmas eve. all you have to place your order by 9:30 a.m. local time. kohl's stores have been open

slouds a clouds and temperatures in the low 50s. if you're shopping in livermore trying to get on some of those deals we're going to see highs there only reaching the low 50s today and unfortunately you have to lug around that coat throughout the day as you go from store to store. i hate that. here is a look at our hour-by-hour temperature forecast going into the rest of the day. most of us are only making it into the low 50s and another cold night ahead as we dip back into the 30s. so bundle up also if you're going out to the menorah lighting in san francisco and union square. it will be about 51 degrees with mostly clear skies. if you're traveling to l.a. today, we still have some rain there, as well as san diego. some light snow happening in the sierra, but we're clearing out. our next chance of rain gets here on christmas eve into christmas day, and that's where we will see some scattered showers moving through, but this is not a significant storm. just enough to really slow you

down if you'll be traveling across the state as we start to see the rain coming in late tomorrow night. even some snow possible on some of the bay area peaks, but a lot of it winds down on christmas day. not before leaving about a quarter to half inch of rain and then as we head over toward the sierra, about one to five inches of snow between now and thursday. our seven-day forecast, dries out as we go into the weekend, with some highs in the mid-50s. morning temperatures stay cool with some upper 30s and san francisco will be in the low to mid-50s going into the rest of the week. mike, you're looking at all forms of travel. >> that's right, kari. some folks flying out of town, others arriving, expecting folks arriving. if you are expecting an arrival maybe some folks make sure you have space like this person does. we're looking at sfo and no major delays reported as far as we know, getting that spoken to me in my ear. if the travel on the roads that will be crowded. be careful as you approach the gate departures.

folks want to say good-bye, a moment of privacy. folks arriving that will be congested, watch the road as someone is riding with you, watch for the folks coming out of baggage claim. the freeway concern is visibility in dublin, we have an issue getting over to the roadway. something's wrong with my machine, there we go, a live look shows a smooth flow of traffic. at the bay bridge a smooth drive as well and apparently just got threatened by me coming over there. the bay bridge toll plaza is showing a little bit of a different flow because we do have the backup starting to form in these cash lanes, fastrak is still clear and no metering lights from the last check that we had. a smooth drive contra costa getting there. the slowdown on 680 and 242 are cleared. the crash over there getting in to san francisco still showing slowing toward silver but recovery so they must have cleared a few lanes, there was one lane that was blocked. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it is 6:21. coming up next on "today in the bay" what caused a massive pile-up on a virginia highway

his friend saw at tack and rushed to call rescue crews. you can see the main being air lifted from the water with a tourniquet wrapped around his leg. he is expected to be okay. a follow-up to the fiery crash near gilroy on saturday night. chp officers say one of the victims likely owes his life to people who stopped to help. the crash happened on highway 152 near lover's lane. police say a man speeding in a jaguar crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting a van then a tractor trailer. the man in the jaguar did not survive the crash. the driver of the van was seriously hurt. good samaritans rushed to help him get out. investigators are saying this morning that fog and icy conditions may have played a role in this 69-car pile-up that happened yesterday morning in virginia. state police confirm at least 51 people were treated and transported. two people have life-threatening injuries it may take days for things

to get back to normal at sacramento international airport. internet problems over the weekend forced flight cancellations and delays. at&t says a saturday night car crash knocked over some of its cables, causing the internet outages at the airport. workers had to manually check in passengers and baggage. several airlines had to either delay or cancel flights.gl9 >> this is the worst experience ever in my entire life and i've been flying a lot. >> reporter: the outage was eventually fixed last night but experts expect delays traveling to and from the airport to continue. the force apparently was a little less strong with the new e "star wars" movie. >> jedi. >> woo! >> out of any movie in the franchise, "the rise of skywalker" got the worst reviews from critics but it topped the box office with over $175 million, in second place the

we have some upper 30s in the inland east bay from concord to livermore. 43 degrees in san jose. fog in the tri-valley. elsewhere it looks better in parts of the north bay we'll see fog and tonight for christmas in the park we'll see our skies clearing and temperatures tropg once again. mike, with your' seeing the patchy fog in fremont. >> sorry, we're not seeing fremont traffic right now. the clouds drifted across. i'll try to adjust the lighting. we show from our camera toward the sign over there showing what's going on at the automall. it's right over here, we see there is fog in the tri-valley as well for 84 coming through livermore and pleasanton, 680 and the dublin interchange, just north of there, the cut-through from 680 over at 84 crow canyon and norris canyon a crash so the pd called for chp to help with traffic control.

[ bleep ] [ bleep ] >> he starts hitting that veteran, the clerk in the store with his gun, mark kasowitz. and then he goes for the cash register. as he's rifling through the cash register he's selecting the higher bills, reaches for a box, a beer box and starts shoving the cash into the box with mr. kasowitz down. to the right of the register you see the drawer there, mr. kasowitz pulls a .9 millimeter out of the drawer and starts wreglie in wrestling with the robber. you see that white flash, the robber getting shot. he did get out of the store and they found him dead outside the store just around the corner. the gunman who pistol whipped mr. kasowitz. the other man in the light gray jacket did get away. the contra costa county sheriff's department is looking

for him. the manager comes up and checks on mr. casperwitz and goes out in the parking lot to chase the robbers off, it happened around 11:00 last night at cam's market. the contra costa county sheriff's department just cleared the scene and as we come back live, another tidbit as i just went in the store, and talked to the owner, kamal cam, he had that beer box full of cash with him, and he was putting the cash in a vault, putting it back away so one robber was killed, the other one got away, and they lost the money as well. so right now detectives are looking for that second suspect, anyone who has information who they might be can contact the contra costa county sheriff's department, and mr. casperwitz shoulden on the scene in a bit, that's his vehicle there. he said he's going to come and talk to us in a bit. we hope to catch up with him and hear more from him about exactly what went down, but i can tell you that we talked to him by

phone earlier and he said that his military training and also 20 years working in private security that all that experience kicked in, and he was fearing for himself and also for the manager who was in the store, that's why he fired back and shot that one suspect. we're live in bay point, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> quite a frightening evening for him. thank you, thom. it is 6:35. now to a holiday shopping nightma nightmare, two men shoved a woman to the ground and dragged her across the parking lot while trying to steal her purse. it happened about 11:00 yesterday morning at the pal mart on aubray street in fremont. police say the attackers got away with the purse and took off in a black bmw. the woman was scraped up but not badly hurt. today marks an important decision regarding the future of the oakland coliseum. alameda county board of supervisors is set to vote on approving a deal to sell its half interest in the coliseum complex to the oakland athletics.

ment the city owns the other half. the move gives the a's a fallback petition if the proposed stadium on howard terminal falls through. supervisor nate miley says it's the best option for the city of oakland. >> the city lost two professional sports teams so i think it would be in the public interest and public good to secure one team to remain in the city. i think this is going to be a win/win for everyone. >> supervisor miley predicts the proposal will pass. the a's have six months to review the purchase before the sale is finalized. speaking of, as the raiders gear up to move to las vegas next season fans are saying they won't be able to see their team play. they say they're priced out. season tickets at the new giwe $650 to $3,000, according to the "las vegas review journal." as of october, 96% of the tickets had already been sold. many long time raiders fans say those costas long with travel expenses mean they won't be

there are patches of fog out there, so be careful, registering in parts of the north bay, creeping down highway 37 which shows a little bit of slowing at mayor island out of vallejo and slowing toward the richmond-san rafael bridge toll plaza. a smooth drive, fog reported here in diablo earlier, maybe a factor still that closure norris canyon at crow canyon road. police activity between 680 and interstate 580 corridor there. a little fog registering through the tri-valley with no major concerns. the bay bridge toll plaza not backed up a smooth drive across the span. >> everyone's off except us. >> completely empty i'm sure. >> everybody's home sipping cocoa. >> it's cool today, too. over the next several days we'll keep this cool air and slightly below normal, after another cold

front moves through. the main thing to remember here is to get your travel in before christmas eve, because we will see our next storm system coming in late christmas eve night, into christmas day, and the rest of the forecast is dry. we'll see temperatures reaching into the mid-50s and lower 50s for san francisco. by the weekend, we're looking at a lot of sunshine coming our way. if you're going to the sierra, get there before christmas eve. as you head back to the bay area after christmas we are dry and hopefully much better road conditions. still cold, temperatures reaching 30 degrees for the high on friday. if you're headed to the russian river valley this weekend, expect highs in the upper 50s from friday to saturday. a little bit cooler on sunday with a high of 52 degrees. we'll talk about today's temperature trend in the south bay, that's coming up in about three minutes. >> see you then. 6:39 coming up and all new, i.c.e. agents arrest a former

clayton was a quarterback at long island university. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> very young, so sad, thank you very much, sharon. an arrest of a former daca recipient by i.c.e. agents is spreading fear among the immigrant community in l.a. county. 23-year-old daniella ramirez was taken into custody early friday morning at the marriott hotel where she works. ramirez and her sister came to california from mexico when she was just 10 years old. both became daca recipients but ramirez didn't renew her status two years ago out of fear. >> she heard from somebody she is not supposed to renew it because they will send her to jail. >> no criminal record, nothing, just living, you know, wanting to live the american dream. she was always worried that because of the trump administration. >> within the past year, i.c.e. has started reopening closed cases against daca recipients without criminal records. acting i.c.e. press secretary

brian d. cox released a statement which read in part, "this is not new or specific to daca." that said, all cases that were formally administratively closed are being recalendared." the coast guard is under scrutiny for exempting some boats from strict safety rules. that included the "conception" diving boat in which 34 people were killed in a fire during labor day. some of the victims were from the bay area. according to the "l.a. times" u.s. coast guard records show eight diving boats in the state were given exemptions from the 1996 safety standards rule which means they didn't need to add bigger escape hatches and advance fire prevention systems. no word from the coast guard as to why. federal investigators are still looking into the dive boat fire. new video shows a troubling sight this holiday season. this is a delivery truck full of packages on fire, just days

before christmas at the beginning of hanukkah. this happened over the weekend in fullerton, south of los angeles. the fedex driver picked up his shipment and was headed to san diego when he noticed the truck on fire. several of the packages and gifts inside were destroyed. the driver wasn't hurt. no word on what sparked that fire. >> 6:48 right now. trending this morning, have you ever wondered how much it would cost to light up your house like clark griswold? look at his eyes. you may recall that iconic scene in "national lampoon's christmas vacation" when griswold gets the holiday house display to work. according to com-ed, the chicago utility company it would cost $3,700 to run all 25,000 lights for five hours a day for 31 days in december, 2019, but using the l.e.d. holiday lights, it would only cost about $70. >> that is the best. i love that movie. >> talk about a holiday display.

hit up the airport sfo no fog. it's looking good here as well as sjc, no fog right now. temperatures are cold in the north bay, dropped down to freezing. 37 in livermore and concord at 38 degrees. we're talking about all of the fog in the tri-valley so it's coming along with some cold air. elsewhere high temperatures eastern half of the country well above normal. 50s and 60s up to 69 degrees for the high temperature in dallas today. the snow and moved in over the weekend pushes off to the east. airport delays everything is looking good except for d.c., a 30-minute flight delay but around california we are not seeing any flight delays as of
