rosa. we are going to head up into the low 50s today for our high temperatures, more clouds and then rain moving in tonight. we'll be tracking that with the time line of the rain coming up. mike, you're following a crash on the peninsula. >> on-ramp san antonio getting on to 101 westbound direction over here and coming on to the freeway. there was an earlier crash that left fence damaged and crews still there. the on-ramp is open but it may be affected by flashing lights. watch out for the crew there. bend. meanwhile another crash on skyline not heavily traveled. we'll talk about that in the upcoming report. i wanted to show you the rest of the bay a clear drive as far as speed sensors go, a little bit of fog registering here and there. we expect the bay bridge to be lighter today. back to you. thank you a pair of thieves is on the run after stealing thousands of dollars, get this, from a church. >> money designated to buy gifts for kids this holiday season.

rod plater is in san jose, joins us with this story. sounds like the grinch is here. >> reporter: it's a brazen duo, so brazen they not only stole from a church, they did so in broad daylight and casually walked out the front door. all this happened saturday afternoon at our lady of guadalupe church in san jose after a baptism service. surveillance video shows what appears to be a man and woman pick up a collection box and walk out the door with about $3,000. >> she was' wearing gloves, has a hood on so definitely they thought about it, they planned it before they came here. >> reporter: every year january 6th the church celebrates what's called the day the wise men visited jesus. the church gives out hundreds of gifts to local children but now of course their money is gone. they are accepting donations

here to try and help give those gifts back to the children but the clock is sicking less than two weeks away from now. >> truly horrible. >> i'm sure people will step up. thanks, roz. new details on i hit-and-run crash in san mateo that left a pedestrian hurlt. 18-year-old nathan ferris in police custody. he was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol sunday night when he struck the pedestrian and parked cars. witnesses say feris and several young people took off running from the car. ferris was arrested a short time later at his home. the the pedestrian is expected to survive. now to the capitol not a lot of holiday cheer in the air as the impeachment trial looms large over washington, d.c. senate democrats and republicans are battling over witness testimony and the possible

release of new documents. in a later chuck schumer is pursuing the release of new emails concerning president donald trump and ukraine's leader and ramping up his push for new witnesses. >> if it doesn't have documents and witnesses it's going to seem to most of the american people that it is a sham trial, a show trial, not to get at the facts. >> do you think chuck schumer's impartial? >> no. >> do you think elizabeth warren is impartial? >> no. >> bernie sanders is impartial? let's quit the charade. >> still ahead on "today in the bay" in our next half hour we have a live report from washington, d.c., detailing the new witnesses democrats want to hear from. more nurses are headed for the picket line in the bay area. 3,000 are calling for a strike over contract negotiations. late yesterday they voted to authorize a walk-out. the nurses work for santa clara valley medical center and o'connor hospital in san jose as

well as saint louise regional hospital in gilroy. the vice president of their union, mike mannypayo says staffing is a big issue saying "when a new nurse comes in they're paid so low after 6 to 12 months, they leave, so we continuously have new nurses coming through our system." county officials say there is a new contract offer on the table. the union will discuss that offer with county leaders next month and if there is a strike, it would be after that and a ten-day notice will be given. a traffic light project on the peninsula is helping with rush hour congestion. last may, palo alto and cal trans synchronized 19 traffic lights from middlefield road to the dumbarton bridge. the project updated the minimum times of the traffic lights so that cars have enough time to clear the intersections. transportation leaders then tested to see how well the project was doing. you want to know the results? traffic sped up by 28% and

get my 2 for $4 breakfast jack deal while you can. good morning. i'm rahel solomon at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open slightly higher this morning. stocks rising yesterday with the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 closing at record highs. shares of boeing by the way leading those gains after the company fires ceo dennis muilenberg amid the 737 max crisis. investors also cheering news china will cut tariffs on a wide range of imported goods. a half day of trading today with the markets closing at 1:00 p.m. eastern. the new year will bring new overtime rules for employers, including small businesses and a pay raise for an estimated 1.3 million workers. the jobs most likely to be affected are shift supervisors are assistant managers at restaurants, retailers and manufacturers. workers at companies of all

sizes will be affected but the new rules may have a greater impact on smaller firms that don't really have the revenues of larger companies to cushion against higher waiver costs. a new scathing report from buzzfreed and pro publica detail how auxr(f may have sacrificed safety for speed in delivering packages. the company delivers about half of its own orders using amazon branded vans and trucks instead of u.p.s. or the u.s. postal service and amazon put new drivers to work immediately instead of making them take a five-day defensive driving course because that would have created a "bottleneck." a separate proposal would have given drivers more rest breaks but that was rejected. in a statement amazon said nothing is more important than safety and it provided more than a million hours of training to employees and contractors last year. kira and laura, i'll send it back to you. >> ooh, yeah, not good news there. i can't say i'm not guilty of using amazon for everything. so i'm probably one of the ones

now we'll be tracking that throughout the morning and watching our weather as we get ready for rain. it's very cold out ahead of that rain and mostly clear skies, allowing for the temperatures to drop well below freezing in parts of the north bay. we have seen some clouds across the south bay, where it is a little bit milder right now in san jose. it is 43 degrees, but compare that to the 29 right now we have in napa. already a wide range in temperatures and as you get ready to head out the door in antioch, if you're working today you're also blasting that heat and having to bundle up. temperatures drop down to about 39 degrees, as we approach sunrise and then slowly warm up today. if you still have some shopping to do, you're heading out today in napa, expect it to only in the 30s, now and 8:00, temperatures reaching closer to 50 degrees and heading out of the bay area across the country

they're actually dealing with well above normal temperatures for parts of the south and east new york city reaching 45 degrees. looking at 52, and we'll see the storm system coming in, a weak one bringing in scattered showers. there's a large swathe of plows that will move in today ahead of that a few spotty sprinkles for the santa cruz mountains and the south bay. here we are at 11:00 before we start to see the real rain moving in, during the overnight hours right in time for santa to get to the bay area. he's also bringing in snow for some of the bay area peaks for mt. hamilton as well as parts of the north bay. we'll snow late tonight and early tomorrow morning and going through the time line at 11:30 tomorrow the rain lingers for the north bay but the rest of the bay area starts to see some clearing and there will be some lingering showers going into the

afternoon. rain totals are light from a quarter inch in parts of the north bay up to a half of an inch in san francisco and redwood city and palo alto. into the weekend we'll see another chance of rain on sunday as the system weakens moves through quickly sunday. we'll have the 49ers game aired here on nbc ba yy area it is mostly dry after tomorrow and a chance to enjoy some sunshine. highly 35 northbound affects both directions, you can see the activity. that is a 3-d representation of the hills over there on the

coast not affecting 101 or 280 but again highway 35 at kings mountain a major damage to a car but no major injuries reported. i'll follow that if it is on your route. 880 at baskham another crash reported near the on-ramp. so far it sounds like the on-ramp is just fine, just off of the roadway. many of the cars will be off of the roadway, lighter traffic flow. i checked with our partners at waze, we have the predictive timing if everything goes according to plan we shouldn't have a problem from san pablo in to san francisco across the bay bridge, about 25 minutes and it holds that way for the next few hours. they're not predicting much of a morning commute. we'll watch this bay bridge toll plaza because anything even one small thing on the bridge could disrupt that flow and ripple out to the rest of the east bay. i'm not hoping for that, i'm just warning about that. fremont smoothly a clear view, yesterday was a lot of fog so a

pleasant drive right now. back to you. >> mike, thanks. just shy of 4:49. president trump's administration is giving billions of dollars in contracts to private companies that can operate immigration detention centers here in california. the move comes less than two weeks before a new state law goes into effect. the contracts in san diego colexico and bakersfield allow for housing of about 4,000 detainees with capacity to expand in the future. i.c.e. says the contracts are not subject to the new state law. new video shows storm damage left behind after high winds and heavy rain fell in l.a. there were several downed trees and at least one building damaged. one man was trapped for 30 minutes under a massive tree after it toppled onto a roof in an apartment building. some residents could be displaced since the roof of the building was damaged heavily. the new year just around the corner, and with it comes new

laws, including some addressing wildfire concerns. first a law requiring utilities like pg&e to reduce impact of planned power shutoffs to first responders and people with disabilities. another law requires utilities to submit timely reports on bush and tree trimming work. finally next year will bring a wildfire warning center to california, its purpose to predict and prepare for wildfires relying on a statewide network of automated weather stations and fire detection cameras. the san francisco fire department is getting some help from the skies above. "the examiner" reports that the department says it will buy its first drone in the new year. it will be used to monitor fires and help in search and rescue operations. six other city departments also will be getting drones, including the public works department. now to a follow-up, the a's and the city of oakland are officially in business together. the alameda county board of supervisors unanimously voted to sell the county's 50% share of

the coliseum property to the teen. the price tag $85 million. the a's want to redevelop the 155 acres with affordable housing and parks. the city, which owns the other half, would have to agree to any plans. and from the sidelines to playing for a division title. did you hear? retired running back marshawn lynch is returning to seattle just in time as they get ready to play the 49ers on sunday night football. >> that's right, the seahawks have been decimated by injury. lynch played for the seahawks from 2010 to 2015, helping them win a super bowl. seattle's top three running backs are all out for the season with various injuries. that will be one to watch. >> beast mode. just a reminder, catch the niners/seahawks game sunday night here on nbc bay area. our own janelle wang and anthony flores will be in seattle covering the game. wow, i didn't know that. again, the winner wins the

thanks for joining us. it's christmas eve, hard to believe. >> yes. >> i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm kira klapper in for marcus washington. we're going to get to mike and the very little traffic out there. >> don't spoil my story. that's the only thing i got. >> the one car pulled over. >> i'm watching all of you, just like santa. >> all one of you. >> speaking of santa, meteorologist kari hall is tracking him, but we have the forecast. >> yes, so by the time he gets here later tonight, there will be some rain moving through, but we're starting out this morning with cold temperatures and fog and so when we see dense fog like this and temperatures below freezing we have the concern of freezing fog especially on the bridges and overpasses. so around santa rosa, napa, and parts of the north bay, watch out for those roads that may be icy because of those below freezing temperatures and the high humidity. we'll be tracking this storm system coming in, bringing us some rain for most of us around the 11:00 to midnight. so i'll have a time line of that
