deadly. "today in the bay" continues right now. and a good thursday morning to you. thanks for starting your morning here with us. i'm marcus washington. >> we hope you had a very merry christmas. we're happy to have marcus back. first thing, here is something we're talking about this morning, travel troubles in southern california. videos from social media are showing the holiday drive struggle because of snow and ice. that is not normal for southern california. meteorologist kari hall is covering the weather and traffic. we had hail yesterday. hail in parts of marin county and now parts of the grapevine are closed because of snow falling. back to the bay area from southern california you can see the storm system still bringing the scattered showers to parts of the south bay, mostly the south county. but a wide view of this shows

you all of that wet weather and even the snow, possibly some thunderstorms, around l.a. to san diego. let's show you the roads around the bay area. take a live look outside. we're getting a chance to dry out here and we will, for the most part, see a good start to the morning commute. i'll be watching to see if there are any issues. drive safely. there's more cars on the road this morning. i'll have a look at that coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. we have breaking news right now from the tri-valley and it is something we really wish we didn't have to bring you. three teenagers are dead, killed in a christmas night crash. >> bob redell live for us. investigators saying what led up to the crash? >> reporter: that part chp hasn't been abling to figure out. they do not believe alcohol was

involved. this happened last niu before 10:00. this was christmas night. five teenaged kids, all from the tri-valley, were in a sedan heading southbound here on foothill road not far from the castle wood country club when their car crossed the center line, went to a power pole and wrapped around a tree. again, there were five teenaged kids in the car, three of the boys including two brothers were killed. they died here on the scene. the other boy and girl were both taken to the hospital with major injuries. here is the sergeant we spoke with earlier this morning. >> my heart goes out to the families. i think most everyone here could say that, which is terribly sad. hold your families close the en

twitter tirade. tom, the president always has a lot to say. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. yes, he does. he seems to target california and its politicians quite a bit. in this latest twitter storm the president was really responding to five-day-old tweet from fox nation host where she was blaming governor newsom for not doing more and on his -- on christmas day the president retweeted the nearly week-old tweet and said, quote, governor gavin n. has done a really bad job on taking care of the homeless population in california, threatening that, quote, if he can't fix the problem, the federal government will get involved. now you might remember in september the president threatened federal intervention. if the cities didn't do a better job of cleaning up human waste from homeless people. following a social media
5:05 am
exchange on the issue then, the president and mayor defended their position in front of news cameras. >> if you look at san francisco, it's a total disaster. are they going to ruin the cities and we're going to get involved very soon on a federal basis if they don't clean up their act. >> i can't begin to pretend as if i know what's going on in the president's head. ultimately i have a city to run. we have real challenges that we need to address and instead of being critical, he should be trying to help us. >> reporter: the mayor went on to show us on camera how all of san francisco's storm drainage waste is treated in a waste water treatment facility and looking at social media this morning the president's attack on governor newsom might not be out of the blue. the governor has been critical on a number of issues. the governor has not yet responded at least on social

5:07 am
trees came crashing down without warning. one man escaped without injury. however, a woman was injured by falling debris. a third man was killed, pinned by the trunk of the tree. >> do we not have enough people to do the work to keep everyone safe? >> about a million people come to muir woods each year. park officials say what happened is rare pointing out the tree fell after a persistent series of winter storms the last week and a half. happening for you now beware if you're heading down to socal or if you have family heading there. i-5 at the grapevine is closed and it is because of what you see there, the snow. these are live pictures this morning. all of that snow causing crashes as well. if you're expecting family returning to the bay area today from southern california, be patient because it could take a
