there. >> still windy and chilly temperatures with waves of rain that lingers, unsettled weather the past couple of days. we still have some rain over the santa cruz mountains making it into the south bay and the south county watching out for spotty light showers. we have bigger problems for parts of southern california as still a lot of rain, storms and snow rolled on through today in the bay area. we'll get some sunshine and highs reaching the mid-50s. getting out on the roads we haven't had any major issues. a lot of green sensors on the traffic map. a full traffic and weather report in a few minutes. it is 6:01 and breaking news from the tri-valley, something we wish we didn't have to tell but. three teenagers have been killed in a christmas night car crash.

>> "today in the bay's" bob redell live in pleasanton. investigators are talking about what led us to the crash, do they know yet? >> reporter: another update from a chp sergeant. there's no evidence alcohol was involved but they're investigating what caused the crash. we're right by the entrance with country club, a two-lane country road. a slight curve before the crash scene. it's possible they were trying to negotiate the curve. the car with five teenagers crossed over the double line in the center of the road, went to a power pole and wrapped around a tree. three of the boys -- everyone in the car, four boys and a girl, all are under the age of 18, all from the dublin area. three of the boys were killed including two brothers. another boy and girl were ejected and they've been taken

to the hospital with major injuries. one of the people in the car, one of the other boys, might have been a cousin. here is a sergeant we spoke to maybe an hour and a half ago. >> a tragic incident. my heart goes out to the families. most everyone here can say that. hold your family close. our hearts go out to the parents of these kids. >> reporter: this accident happened around 10:00 last night. no indication where they were going to or coming from. this section is shut down. the accident itself has been removed. pg&e is out there having to repair the power pole that was down. reporting live, bob redell,

"today in the bay." >> bob is with those families. 6:03. the last hour president trump taking 20 to twitter again attacking for what he says it one of the worst areas in the nation for crime and homelessness. he goes on again targeting governor gavin newsom on the issue and for the second time since christmas afternoon is doing this. "today in the bay's" thom jensen for us now live in san francisco with more on what the president is talking about on twitter. thom? >> reporter: the second time he zeros in on the bay area and speaker of the house nancy pelosi. just as we were doing our sound check before the 5:00 show the first tweet came out and half an hour later a second tweet where he referred to the speak er as crazy nancy, she represents the

bay area. just before 5:00 he said nancy pelosi's district has rapidly become one of the worst anywhere in the u.s. when it comes to homeless and crime. it has gotten so bad so fast she has lost total control and with her equally incompetent governor gavin newsom it is a very sad sight. on christmas day he threatened if newsom can't, quote, fix the problem, the federal government will get involved. the president threatened intervention if the cities don't do a better job of cleaning up human waste. the president and mayor defended their positions. >> they're going to ruin those cities and we're going to get involved soon on a federal basis

if they don't clean up their act. >> we have real challenges to address. instead of being critical he should be trying to help us. >> reporter: mayor breed opened up the waste water treatment act and took nbc bay area through showing how all of the storm drainage from that human waste is treated at a waste water treatment plant. unlike the president saying it does not flow right into the ocean. we have not seen a response from any camps this morning but they may not either one of them be out of the blue. the governor has been quite critical on a number of different issues. the speaker holding back the impeachment from the senate until she's happy the way the impeachment process is going to move forward with the senate trial.

happening today two east bay moms will be in court fighting their eviction notice. >> last month mothers moved into an empty house without permission. the property owner says those families are trespassing and need to leave. it wasn't made a home until we move in. >> we don't know the identity of the man killed by a tree that happened just before closing on christmas eve. one man did escape without injury. a woman, however, was injured by

falling debris. a 29-year-old was killed, pinned by the trunk of the tree. >> about a million people come to muir woods each year. what happened is rare pointing out that the trees fell after a persistent series of winter storms over the last week and a half. beware if you're heading down to socal or have families heading there. i-5 near l.a. is closed and it's because of what you see here. take a look now. that snow is a live picture. >> all that snow is causing crashes as well. it may take quite some time. no word on when i-5 will reopen. there is also snow in higher

the mid-30s elsewhere. you're about to head out in antioch. it's going to be in the low 40s starting out the day there. here is a look at our overall traffic maps as we get a look at our roads this morning and i wanted to show you a close-up of what's happening here. we're seeing a possible incident on i-80 west of 37. they were saying a vehicle on its roof and teetering on the guardrails. so that's something i'll be watching as we go throughout the morning. bay bridge toll plaza flowing well. we haven't seen a backup yet this morning. i'll keep an eye on the rest of the bay area and weather coming up in a few minutes. it's book making changes. what the company will no longer use for your phone number. that's a good story coming up. ready, set, return. if you have a christmas or

good thursday morning if you're heading back to work. a live look outside in palo alto. temperatures are chilly to start. 40s as you head out the door and not much of a warm-up as we only reach the mid-50s for this afternoon. getting a look at our morning commute as you head out on the roads. we are seeing overall across the bay area a smooth flow of traffic, no major issues. we are tracking what's going on near vallejo with a possible vehicle on its roof.

details on that coming up. good morning. investors return from the holiday, mixed session from christmas eve. breaking a three-day winning streak. the nasdaq, though, ekes out its tenth straight gain. the longest since 2017. a report on jobless claims or filings for unemployment benefits. amazon says customers shopped at record levels with billions of items ordered worldwide. amazon is not giving specifics but says a number of items delivered with prime free one-day and same day delivery nearly quadrupled. the most popular included toys and games, fashion and home and beauty. now it's time for the second holiday shopping season when everyone returns their unwanted gifts.

20% plan to return more than half their gifts. returns are expected to peak on january 2nd, a 26% increase from last year. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks so much. it is 6:16. we have some good news from facebook. facebook says it will no longer use phone numbers gathered if two factor authentication to steer friend suggestions. users who have it receive a code on their phone before they can access their facebook page on a new phone or computer or some type of device. facebook has been using the phone numbers to drive their suggested friends feature. did you know that? according to reuters officials say the changes come as the company is working to overhaul their privacy policies. new for you this morning this will be the hottest toy of 2020. take a look.

you're looking there at the doll that will be available in march. many star wars fans would have loved to have found this under their tree christmas day, but disney didn't make any to prevent spoilers for the new star wars show on disney plus. and since we're talking about baby yoda and the toy it will be out on may 4th which is star wars day. >> may the force be with you. 6:17. caught on camera right here a sneaky u.p.s. delivery driver. >> it's a really good thing he was this sneaky. take a look at this ring surveillance video posted on facebook shows him dropping off a big toy. the driver felt the package was most likely a christmas gift. he decided to hide the package behind the two big garbage cans so it wouldn't be stolen by porch pirates. the driver's intuition was

correct. it was a christmas gift for their 4-year-old son. it sounds like he got it. >> he probably has kids himself. >> exactly. >> where is my delivery? i can't find it. oh, there it is. >> good to see he's mindful of all we're having to deal with now. so today is the day people will be taking stuff back to the stores, and we're going to have a few lingering showers for the south bay but clearing out the rest of the day. picking up on some rain over the santa cruz mountains with spotty sprinkles from palo alto extending to the dumbarton bridge as well. a lot of the rain is to our self. if you're heading to southern california, if you have people coming back from either san diego, l.a. or anywhere along the central coast, we're still dealing with some rain and snow.

we've talked about people heading back to the mall. maybe to the mall in milpitas expect temperatures this morning right at 49 degrees and then as we go into the day mid-50s, sunshine. you may still have to wear the jacket but you don't have to lug around the umbrella. going out for christmas in the park tonight still going to see temperatures in the mid-50s for the middle of the day. then dropping back to the 40s later on tonight. high temperature of about 55 degrees in san jose. napa reaching 53 degrees. and that's a live look at squaw valley this morning. 25 degrees f. you're going there over the next few days expect upper 20s today. cold morning temperatures, 1 is 1 degrees. at least the road conditions are good and we have all the lifts and runs open. looking at another 5 to 7 inches of snow from now until about early next week, we're heading into the rest of 2019 with

mostly some dry weather. we'll be watching out a chance of spotty showers and our seven day forecast shows upper 50s in the forecast going into the end of the year. a look at how the commute is slowing and we haven't had any huge problems this morning. it looks pretty good and i hope it stays that way. we've had a lot of green sensors here still watching what's happening up around vallejo. a closer look at getting away from the bay bridge this morning. a slowdown there. not sure why near emeryville. i think once you get past that it's looking pretty good and here is where we had that vehicle that turned over -- teetering on the guardrail and on its roof. that's something we'll be watching in the area and as we head to the south bay a smooth morning commute as people head back to work this morning. we'll get another look at weather and traffic coming up in a few minutes. >> kari, thanks so much.

lingers. around i-5 around the grapevine. expect mid-40s around sun rise and going into the rest of the day. as you head out from the south bay a fire off the on ramp going northbound. people are distracted by the fire. a smooth flow across the south bay and elsewhere. >> thank you, kari. breaking news a horrible story to report this morning. three teens are dead after a christmas night crash.

>> bob redell is at the scene there. we've learned information throughout the morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: chp is trying to figure out what caused the accident. five teenagers under the age of 18 were in a sedan on foothill road. they hit a curb and crossed the center line. went into a power pole. another boy and girl were ejected, both taken to the hospital with major injuries. one of the boys might have been a cousin. not clear what that relationship is.

chp does not believe alcohol was involved. it is a country road, two lane road. it is still shut down and when the power pole came down trying to repair the damage. 4:00 at the earliest. one thing we do know they believe all five are from and were from the dublin area. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. 6:33 right now. this morning a suspect is behind bars in connection to a stabbing death of a 49ers player brother.

c.j. beathard's brother clayton was stabbed to death. police outside of nashville hunted down and arrested the suspect. the pictures from police show michael mosley moments after his capture. police tracked him down. this man saw it all unfold. >> i just happened to be out here. took him away real quick. >> police say on saturday mosley made unwanted advances of a female friend of beathard. it escalated. two were stabbed and killed. >> at 6:34 a live look where democrats might be one step closer to getting their impeachment met. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is in total coordination with the white

house over the upcoming impeachment trial. now fellow members of congress are voicing their concerns about that. republican senator lisa murkowski said those comments disturbed her. >> it means that we have to take that step back. >> speaker nancy pelosi will not send the articles of impeachment to the senate until she is confident members will hold a fair trial. witness testimony so that is what senate minority leader chuck schumer is pushing for. >> say to president trump release the emails, let your aides testify. >> if all democrats vote on party lines they would only need four republicans to vote against party lines in order to get those witnesses.

wildfires are causing turmoil. thousands have lost policies in the last few years and data shows state farm and all state declined to renew roughly 350,000 in areas of high risk since 2015. that's according to the state department of insurance. in the past two years wildfires cost more than $25 million in damages. there could be a granny unit boom come the new year. dwelling units or adus go into effect january 1st. no longer a minimum lot size requirement. san jose, oakland and rules to allow more granny units and they've seen a big spike. >> christmas might be over but travel headaches continue.

experts from airlines for america tell us they expect 104 million travelers will begin traveling to and from their holiday destinations throughout the next week and traveling by air won't be any easier. 3 million travelers to fly throughout the country. here is a live look, keeping an eye on how they are faring for our flyers. >> if you're heading to the beach this morning a warning about dangerous conditions. here is a live look outside in pacifica. the beach hazard alert is in effect. large waves and rip currents as you see the high waves there. avoid turning your back to the ocean. you probably shouldn't even head

it cools down just a few more degrees. if you plan on heading to the lantern festival at the alameda county fair grounds it will be cool on saturday evening. it starts at 5:00. upper 40s and continuing to cool off as the night goes along. check out the ice skating in san francisco. saturday starts at 10:00 a.m. we'll see more sunshine on saturday with highs up to about 55. if you're going to be here in the bay area a slight chance of rain. traveling with the 49ers, more rain possible and only high temperatures reaching into the mid-40s. as we look at our forecast here at home along the coastline. the risk of high waves but rain continues in the forecast on

6:44. the sun trying to come through those breaks in the clouds over the south bay as we approach sun rise this morning. still going to be mostly cloudy and temperatures in the mid-40s. another cool start that leads into a mostly sunny day. as you head out on the roads, we've seen a smooth commute for the bay area. we've had one issue getting out of the bay.

in the east bay fewer people are recovering this morning all victims of a shooting that happened at a holiday party christmas night on 34th. it's not clear whether anyone would take anyone into custody. charging 25 cents for disposable cups. starting in january, san francisco also is considering a similar proposal. efforts to reduce our waste. starbucks is testing in four other cities. now customers will have to bring their own mug or pay a deposit. back to our enemy territory in

the game. the loser had to hit the road for a wild card game. in trending kevin hart may be in some pain today. anthony davis falls on to the crowd after a shot right on to kevin heart. the 6'10" power forward landed right on the 5'4" actor. surprised at first, hart started to laugh as davis continues to get cozy on his lap. then the moment gets better when 6'9" lebron james joins in on the fun. >> kevin hart had surgery. >> he is recovering from that and then you have two nba players on his lap. >> huge players. >> we're excited about the forecast, it looks pretty good

for the bay area. >> i know this is a big day for shopping and returns. the mall opens and as we go through the day temperatures will be in the mid-50s this afternoon. all will see high temperatures for a high today. we are still seeing issues the storm system we had yesterday and still bringing some rain to the santa cruz mountains and areas just to our south is still bringing rain and snow to mt. hamilton. heading down to l.a. where it's snowing and had to shut it down at the grapevine. big storms across l.a. and san diego that's also causing some travel delays. t sjc and have

to fly southwest there's a long line. for l.a. a 30-minute delay. another weakening storm moves in on sunday. it doesn't look like a big deal. something we'll be watching by the end of the weekend as we wrap up 2019. we continue on with dry weather and near normal temperatures. as we look at how our roads are looking overall no major issues, a lot of green sensors here, people heading back to work. one issue with the fire near the off ramp at saratoga going northbound. and then recovery going eastbound as they tried to upright a vehicle that had a crash. now recovery there looking at dublin, 580.

brothers. >> reporter: correct, sadly. five teens under the age of 18 from the dublin area were in a sedan. this is last night around 10:00. a reminder this was christmas night and they were coming down foothill road behind me for whatever reason and then wrapped around a tree. we know two of the boys were mentioned. they were both ejected, taken to the hospital according to chp. one of the other people in the car. right now they do not believe alcohol was involved. if you are not familiar with this section by the entrance to the castle wood country club it is a country road, two-lane road. this happened by the bend. still trying to repair the power
