"today in the bay's" kari hall tracking what we can expect for our weekend forecast. yes, the weekend is almost here. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. all right, kari, let's talk about it. the cold temperatures keep out the coat, scarves, gloves? >> all of that. we have to layer up again today because of that system that moved through yesterday. it's really pulling down some cold air from canada, as it continues to move across the dese have been in the 30s, below freezing in parts of the north bay, that's a look at palo alto, where we're starting out at 36 degrees, and we'll stay in the 30s through at least 8:00 and

then start to gradually warm up, but you can see there is a lot of sun in that forecast today. as you get ready to head out on the roads here is a live look in san jose, looking at the interchange 280 as well as 880 or 101, and so we're going to see for the most part a smooth commute, but i have seen several incidents on the roads, some non-injury crashes, especially in san jose so i'll be watching that and also letting you know if there's a bigger issue coming up in weather and traffic. >> thank you very much, kari. we are following breaking news on this friday morning, right now the coast guard searching for a tour helicopter missing off the coast of hawaii, believed to be carrying seven people. the search is happening near kau kauai. we don't know who the tourists are on board. no distress signals have been received. turning to our nation's

capit capitol, negotiations over the impeachment trial at a standstill but both sides are continuing to strategize their next moves. lawmakers won't return until january 6th. during this break, president trump is staying in florida and he's not breaking away from twitter, attacking democrats over the impeachment impasse. this comes as house speaker nancy pelosi continues to hold off transmitting two articles of impeachment to the senate. >> we probably ought to send her a frus basket for not sending us something we don't want to deal with. >> the most important witnesses in the impeachment trial are kept from the american people and not being allowed to go forward and testify. >> senate majoritytch ong if they'll call witnesses. coming upt is raising concerns. a christmas eve robbery takes the life of a south bay woman. as police continue their search

for suspects the victim's family members want answers. she returned from work around 9:30 p.m. but didn't come inside, so her family went outside to check on her, when they found her on the street, she was badly beaten. her purse was also missing. her husband talked with us through a translator and said he's desperate for answers. >> he wants to find out who did it and he wants to find out what actually happened to her. >> surveillance footage from their neighbor might provide clues. there was a car backing up to the home, and someone running away from the home just a few moments later. 's they were leaving, they heard something like rocks falling and they all ran to try to avoid that tree. it missed her and her boyfriend, but it fell on her brother who was just feet away. >> i noticed his shoe, my brother's, and then i knew that something was very wrong. we just unfortunately happened to be at that wrong time at the wrong place. >> that area where the tree fell is now closed to the public, but the rest of the park is now open. this morning, we know the name of the father who died earlier this week along the coast. officials say 53-year-old paul lewis saved his 10-year-old daughter from the water off of the carmel river state beach. she was floating out to sea in an inflatable device. crews rescued both of them but lewis died. lewis' daughter was taken to he. clearer picture how thehrgh this morning we're getting a

butte county last year is changing the population landscape. new data of the department of finance shows more than 10,000 people moved out of the area, many relocating to other cities in the county and state outside the affected cities of paradise, modalia and concoa. flames killed 86 people, displacing nearly 36,000 and destroying almost 15,000 homes. this weekend, south bay transportation getting a makeover just in time for the new year, workers are prepping for a new service rollout ar clara county when people will see 3,300 new bus stop signs, ad routes. vta says people can expect shorter wait times as well. all bus and light rail rides will be free starting tomorrow and through the end of the year. 4:35 for you. buckle up, a new year is ahead. still ahead on "today in the bay" the all new laws drivers

right now at 4:39, cold temperatures, layer up. antioch temperatures around 43 degrees, dropping down to 41 and as we go through the day here we're going to see clear conditions, but we have been tracking soment patchy fog. as we get a look at our traffic map we did have some fog around redwood city and now there's an accident on 82, we'll be watching that as well as around the bay area in traffic and weather, coming up in about five minutes. good morning, i'm rahel solomon at cnbc wall street is poised to continue to march higher. the markets were boosted by holl sales. the nasdaq closing above the 9,000 mark for the first time. 9,000 mark for the first time. it posted a record close in ten extends its overall winning streak to 11 days, the longest since 2009. it took the nasdaq 335 trading

welcome back. good friday mornple are up and this morning, overlooking the fremont area. it's a cold start to our friday ded outdoor, not a lot of people have the day off. probably nle >> watching "today in the bay." >> exactly. what else are you going to do? >> that's the way i like to start my morning, because i'm here. >> well, yes. the live look outside in fremont, as we get ready to head out the door this morning, yes, we've been talking about how cold it is, and you're probably even if you're at home, the heater is coming on constantly because it's trying to keep up the temperature.

so there is a look at dublin right now. people heading out on 580, you can tell that maybe people are getting that one workday in before the weekend, and then we'll see a nice weekend ahead. as we look at our temperatures, it's down to 33 degrees in livermore, freezing in napa, and in santa rosa. the warm spot san francisco at 44 degrees, if we can call it that and half moon bay it is 37 degrees there as well, in concord, we stay in0s gradually start to warm up. now it looks like it does happen pretty quickly because by 11:00 we're at 52 degrees with some sunshine, eventually reaching 56 degrees. also a high of 56 excted in livermore and in morgan hill, and oakland and palo alto, we're looking at a high of 55 degrees and 59 today in santa rosa. going in to the weekend, we're dry today, as well as tomorrow, but then by sunday, another quick moving system comes in, brings us some spotty showers,

this also doesn't look like a strong storm, and it's in and out of here fairly quickly, then going into next week, we start out the new year with some dry and also cool weather. if you're going up to seattle to travel with the 49ers, there will be still some rain in the forecast there, and temperatures only reaching 45 degrees, so be prepared for the cool and the wet weather. if you're going to the sierra, that's a look at the sunset yesterday and right now it is 7 degrees. we're doing pretty well with our snowpack there across the sierra, we are right where we shoul w normal amount we have on this date, and as we go through the forecast, we are going to see mostly dry conditions, near normal temperatures, but just cooler with some passing showers in the forecast on sunday. and as head out on the roads, here is a live look at the golden gate bridge, not a lot of cars coming across, coming in from the north bay in to the city.

we've seen a couple of incidents out there on the roads, with some travel delays that may start to build up especially in the east bay, as we look at what's happening around oakland, walnut creek, a couple of incidents but the sensors are not showing that cars are slowing down and looking at the south bay. we're also looking at a couple of non-injury crashes, but overall the flow is pretty good. so i'll keep an eye on this as well as the forecast, that's coming up again in a few minutes. >> all right, we'll check back with you. thank you. 4:47. new details two moms occupying an oakland home can stay in it at least for a few more days. the women representing moms for housing celebrated with supporters following a court appearance this morning. not this morning, the judge's decision in the case it was pushed back until monday. the women have been living in the vacant home since november. their attorney says a supreme court decision regarding owners who abandon houses and leave them in disrepair gives the women rights to occupy it.

a spokesperson for the owner's wedgewood property says the company will evict them and it will never sell it to the women. a follow-up now, 3,000 nurses working for santa clara county hospitals now have a contract deal. the union representing the nurses say that it has agreed to a tentative agreement with the county this week. that deal promises competitive wages, hours and safer working conditions, that decision comes after nurses voted to go on strike last week. >> with the new year comes new laws for california drivers, so we all have to pay attention when 2020 comes around. the most important is the new real i.d. in october you'll need the real i.d. driver's license or i.d. card to get on domestic flights or military bases. make that dmv appointment if you can. speaking of appointments, a new law makes it illegal for anyone to sell a dmv appointment. another big rule change drivers must change lanes or slow down

for stopped trash or recycling vehicles. a new law will also make staffing for small businesses harder. federal and state leaders say independent contractors do the same work as employees but since they're freelancers, company owners avoid paying taxes and worker benefits. new law will put together restrictions on who can be independent contractors, rather than employees starting january 1st. business owner also have to decide whether they should hire their contractor as an employee but some of the small businesses say they just don't have enough money to make the changes. the law is being challenged in state court. 4:49. california's population is growing, but more people are leaving the north bay according to the california department of finance, napa, marin and sonoma counties have lost more than 3,000 people making them the only counties in the state to see a population decrease. in the south bay, numbers show santa clara county counts for 5% of california's population, almost 2 million people live

there. happening today, san francisco city leaders are tree-cycling christmas trees. the annual tradition happens at 11:00 this morning at the san francisco civic center plaza. they'll put the trees through a giant wood chipper and create fresh mulch. the city leaders say that event really serves as a reminder to recycle your old trees. workers will be collecting them from january 2nd until the 15th. >> did you have a real tree this year? >> i did, my first one ever in life. >> in life? >> in life. we always had the artificial tree but they look real. >> wow, that's great. we'll have more on that coming up. 4:50 for you right now. dozens of fires before a heat wave hits this weekend. almost 1,300 firefighters still battling 70 brush and grass fires across the state. even though they had a lot of recent rain this week, it helped some efforts along. 33 of the fires are said to be burning out of control. temperatures and high winds are expected in the coming days. a lot more ahead. stick around.

from overnight. the car covered windows, the frost taking over the bay area this morning. something that we don't see too often here but it is winter. >> it doesn't have to be freezing to get frost especially on cars and elevated surfaces. needs to be about 37 degrees. >> moisture out there. >> and all of that humidity is just depositing on some of the areas, what we are seeing in half moon bay, palo alto, 37 degrees there, and frosty conditions possible in san jose, and the north bay where we are below freezing. as we look at our high temperatures today, w nice recovery and some near normal temperatures witso
