tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  December 27, 2019 6:00am-7:01am PST

6:00 am
>> yes. so temperatures are colder. >> will the cold temperatures stick around? >> we'll see that throughout the morning as we start out and seeing temperatures below freezing and much of the bay area. so here is a look at where we are right now. 30 degrees in santa rosa, napa, also freezing in the tri-valley, livermore, checking in at 32 and 35 in san jose, that's a live look in dublin as you get ready to head out this morning. we're headed into the 50s today and for that morning commute looking at our traffic, and the golden gate bridge, flowing well right now, a few more people headed out on the roads, but no major issues, as we check on the traffic maps. i'll have another look at this and weather, coming up in a few minutes. back to the breaking news this morning, we've been on this for the last hour. a fire at an oakland warehouse and there are injuries. >> "today in the bay's" thom jensen has been talking to some of the people who escaped from
6:01 am
the flames. thom? >> reporter: i'll talk about that injury very quickly, before we go to show you what's going on here right now. we understand that the woman who was injured here was six months pregnant, a 33-year-old woman, according to some of her friends and co-tenants who lived in this warehouse, that was owned by a furniture or an estate liquid ait yate or and his wife. this is at the apgar warehouse here in oakland at apgar and west street. ten people living here at one time, the owners charging them $1,000 a month to stay here and that harkens back to the ghostship fire three years ago where 36 people were killed. fortunately the seven to eight people who were in here got out, with just that one woman being injured, a pregnant woman, we understand, 6 months pregnant, again, at summit hospital with what the battalion chief on the scene described here as minor injuries. she's expected to make a full
6:02 am
recovery, but at 2:30, when this fire started, it was a harrowing rescue by one man that helped get that woman and another man who were trapped in an upstairs loft out of the warehouse before it burned to the ground. >> we were in the front of the building and we heard her screaming, and yes, there wasn't any fire at that point but the smoke was completely filling the area upstairs where she was. >> didn't know if they were going to make it out. i didn't know if they were going to make it out. >> reporter: really afraid for that woman, lisa fisher told me that she could see flames kicking up below their feet as they were helping get the woman who was injured out, the pregnant woman who as i said is at the hospital right now. now we do know that this building was red tagged by oakland fire back in november, basically telling the owners that they're not supposed to be having people living in here,
6:03 am
but according to the tenants, people you heard there, and five other people i've talked to, they said that as many as ten people were renting spaces inside the warehouse from the owners. pi reached o i reached out to the owner business telephone, we understand they are in oregon for the holidays. we'll try to get more information from them and more information from oakland fire department. live from oakland, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest live from the scene. more breaking news the coast guard searching for a tour helicopter believed to be carrying seven people has been missing off the coast of hawaii. the search is happening near the island of kauai, just west of oahu. when the chopper didn't return the company contacted authorities. we don't know who the tourists are on board so far and no distress signals have been received. in kazhakstan, at least 15 people have been killed after a plane crashed shortly after takeoff. 98 people were on board.
6:04 am
50 of them are now hospitalized. investigators at the scene say the plane hit a concrete fence and a two-story building just after the plane lost altitude. >> 6:03 for you right now. police need your help finding a killer of a south bay woman. bob redell is outside san jose police headquarters. are police revealing any clues we have right now? jr. no arrests and no identification of any suspects. they hope neighbor's surveillance video might jog someone's memory. the victim was a 45-year-old woman who died this past christmas eve after being attacked during a robbery last week outside her home in san jose. we did speak with her husband, he tells us his wife was a loving wife and mother. both moved to vietnam three years ago. on the night of december 19th,
6:05 am
this was last week, xuan returned home from her job as a cook, pulled into the driveway of the couple's home on stagehand drive in south san jose. when she didn't come in after a few minutes her family went outside, found her seriously hurt on the street, her purse missing, she survived several nights in the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries this past tuesday night, as i mentioned, christmas eve. >> he wants to find out who did it and he wants to find out what actually happened to her. >> reporter: here is that surveillance footage from a neighbor's camera i mentioned. it shows a car backing up to the home at the approximate time of the attack. you can see someone running away from the home and the car takes off. again, police have not made any arrests or identified any suspects, that's where you come in. if you know anything, have any information, san jose police would love to hear from you. reporting live outside san jose police headquarters, bob redell, "today in the bay."
6:06 am
>> thanks so much for the latest there, bob. 6:05 right now. we're learning more about three 16-year-old boys from dublin high school who were killed in a christmas night car crash. twins markle and mark eurista were killed. family members say the sophomores and friend were killed when the car they were riding in slammed into an oak tree on foothill road in pleasanton. two other teens survived the crash, but they're in the hospital. friends who visited the crash site yesterday say it's hard to believe. >> i just saw them like two weeks ago, we were just talking about how i want to move back out here and be like old times, having fun and then it just hits you that they're not here no more, all three. >> the twins' mother says she believes the teens were practicing driving on the two-lane road and their best
6:07 am
friend, who is unlicensed, was behind the wheel. a vigil will be held at dublin high school on sunday. are. continuing coverage of bay area housing crisis. more housing next to transit centers across the state. state senator scott weiner's senate bill 50 is getting strong reaction on both sides and pro-transit group has found itself in the middle of that debate. "the examiner" reports earlier this morning a san francisco transit rider's group publicly supported supervisor gordon maher's resolution to oppose the bill until it includes transfer as well. weiner pushed back said no housing until infrastructure is perfect doesn't work. the group is backing off saying it supports the bill but also changes to include more money for transit. that bill is up for committee vote in sacramento next month. in mountain view, voters will decide whether homeless people's rvs should be banned from narrow streets.
6:08 am
it's an issue popping up in cities across the bay area. according to "the mercury news," election officials received over 4,000 signatures calling for a vote on that issue. you may recall back in september, the city council approved an ordinance banning rvs from streets. however, opponents pushed for the referendum to block the rule from taking effect until voters weigh in. happening now, travel troubles for drivers up and down the state. heavy snow and rain really creating those slick driving conditions. on the left you can see what it looks like at the grapevine right now. this is i-5, and that stretch of road still closed at this hour. and on your right you're looking at driving conditions if you're heading up to tahoe. you'll want to make sure you take it slow, if you're heading up there this weekend. keep the chains handy. you would think chicago this time of year would be covered in snow and just miserable but take a look here. it's sunny, warm, shorts out, oh, yeah. people wearing shorts, out
6:09 am
jogging. temperatures really have been hovering around 50 degrees during the holidays. >> wow. >> meeven breaking records. people are loving it so much, some are getting out on jet skis on the lake. can you believe that, in december, in chicago. >> no wet suit there. >> head to toe. >> maybe underneath. >> but still can you believe that? they're dealing with warmer temperatures and we're bundling up. >> you have family visiting. >> yes, my mother, my grandmother and aunt all here and they said we were expecting the sun of california, and they got rain and clouds and cold temperatures. but they got me. >> right. >> they're leaving 62 degrees today in memphis. >> are you kidding me? >> really warm weather and so how is that for climate change? we're seeing some very warm temperatures across the southeast, while we are dealing with the bitter cold as we see the weather systems blast on by. we're looking at some 50s here, starting out below freezing in the north bay, santa rosa, napa at 30 degrees. 32 in livermore, as well as san
6:10 am
martin, and in san jose we're only a few degrees above freezing. if you're on your way out the door to the warm springs b.a.r.t. station bundle up. we'll see temperatures in the mid-30s here but the day gets milder with all the sunshine, we're headed into the mid to upper 50s as we look at all of our microclimates, some nice weather for the afternoon. we just have to get through the early hours. let's talk about how it looks for your commute this morning, overall look at the bay area, a couple of minor incidents here and there, nothing that's causing any major backups, even in the north bay, we have a smooth flow of traffic. a lot of green sensors showing that everything is moving at speed, even though we've had a couple of car crashes, mostly non-injury, and so we haven't seen a big backup as of yet. looking good here. we'll have another look at weather and traffic coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. okay, so hands tell a lot about you, at least amazon thinks it can. coming up next on "today in the bay," some new technology in the works that can sense wrinkles
6:11 am
and veins in the palm of your hand, and what that new technology could be used for. plus -- >> trending for you this morning, i bet you are wondering what she said. we'll tell you, she got some gifts from a secret santa, a mega billionaire. we'll tell you all about who that is, and we're going to tell you what she received, coming up next for you right here on "today in the bay."
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
good friday morning. right now at 6:14, let's get a live look in the south bay, and it's a cold start, also clear skies. we are seeing some drier conditions for the bay area with mid-30s in santa clara to start out the day. dress in layers as you head out the door, but we will have a mild afternoon, with some sunshine, and as we take a look at the morning commute, also in the south bay, looking at
6:15 am
highway 101, headed south, we have a car that's broken down on the side of the road and may slow things down just a little bit near blossom hill road. overall the traffic flow is smooth so we'll take a look at that and the weather forecast coming up again in less than five minutes. good morning. i'm rahel solomon at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is poised to continue to march higher after another positive day yesterday. the markets were boosted by reports of record holiday retail sales even trading volume was light. the nasdaq closing above the 9,000 mark for the first time. it posted a record close in ten straight sessions, its longest move since july 1997 and also extends its overall winning streak to 11 days, the longest since 2009. it took the nasdaq 335 trading days to go from 8,000 to 9,000. amazon wants to patent technology to identify shoppers by their hands. the u.s. patent office published
6:16 am
an application from the company yesterday for a touchless scanning system which would i.d. people by characteristics associated with their palms including wrinkles and veins. the system could be used in amazon go or whole food stores. the filing does not mean that amazon is developing the technology but reports earlier this year said that it was testing a system to let whole foods customers scan their hand to pay at checkout. starbucks is giving away free espresso drinks today through the end of the year, hosting more than 1,000 pop-up parties at 200 select stores serving free tall hand crafted drinks between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. local time. locations will change and be revealed each day at starbuckspopup.com. drink options include your choice of hot or iced beverage including holiday drinks. there is a limit of one per person. i hear it's chilly out there. maybe you need one. as we doen othe east coast. >> freezing today. >> not california sunshine
6:17 am
today. >> maybe in chicago they can have an ice coffee. >> i know, 60-some degrees there, no, that's in memphis. >> it was in the 50s, hovering around the 50s in chicago. hmm. >> warmer than here. >> yes. >> either way, free coffee for everyone. >> free is always good. thanks, rahel. all right, how about a little gif, how is your secret santa exchange? >> it was fun. >> one lucky woman got the secret santa of a lifetime, bill gates. >> so he actually wrote my name here and this is his name and his proof that he did it. so it's a picture of him. >> shelby from michigan shared a video of her opening all of her presents from the microsoft founder. the gifts include an original manuscript of "the great gatsby" signed by gates, harry potter toys and things for her cat.
6:18 am
shelby says the most personal gift was a donation to the american heart association in memory of her mother. shelby's mom died in april unexpectedly just ten days after her wedding. >> looks like he put some thought into it, too. >> a lot of thought. >> i wonder how do i get into that secret santa group? >> it actually is, i know we do it every year. it's throughout the country, you don't know who you get. >> really? >> every year we always hear who he gets. >> bill gates. >> yes. i have to remember what it is. i'll check into it. >> cool. so we're making plans already for next year and also this weekend, with our weather, as you head out the door, it's very chilly, and we've had some freezing temperatures across the bay area, after that storm system that moved through here as well as southern california. you can see it has since moved on. if you'll be traveling today, headed maybe to southern california, it is also looking much better, but here we have some icy conditions that may be developing on some of our roads, because of the freezing temperatures that we have now, a lot of humidity and so some of the elevated roads like bridges
6:19 am
and overpasses may develop some ice as we drop down to freezing right now in livermore and san martin, below freezing in the north bay. the only fairly mild spot is san francisco where it's 41 degrees, headed up to 54 today. 55 will be the high in oakland and 57 today in san jose. in santa rosa we're looking at a high of 59 degrees. so seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen, as we take a look ahead to the weekend, we start to make plans with some sunshine tomorrow, not a bad day. by sunday, that's when we may be chased inside by some spotty showers. it doesn't look like a washout but we will have a chance of rain in the forecast, quickly moving through. it will also bring some snow to the sierra, and for us, we're going to dry out going into early next week. we're looking at about a quarter inch of rain here, so once again, not a strong storm that's going to be in and out of here fairly quickly, as we head into monday. looking at the sunset yesterday in squaw valley and the current
6:20 am
temperature, it just continues to get colder. five degrees right now. as we go into the weekend, looking at squaw valley in the forecast, we'll see highs today reaching 31 degrees, 36 tomorrow and the snow returns by the end of the weekend. reare looking at one to five inches of snow. we get the quarter inch of rain for your watch parties, 49ers game we may have showers around the area but not a washout and looking at the forecast into the first part of 2020 it's looking good with above normal temperatures. let's get you out on the roads with a look at the commute. overall a fairly good drive, no major incidents or accidents on the road, for the north bay, we're also seeing a lot of green here, indicating that the cars are flowing at speed, not a lot of slowdowns here and for contra costa county, a couple of accidents that have been there for a while.
6:21 am
for the south bay we're not seeing a major backup here, headed out the door in san rafael, highway 101 headed into san francisco with the headlights looking good and good flow of traffic crossing the bay bridge as you approach the toll plaza. we haven't seen the need for the metering lights to come on yet. i'll be watching this as well as the forecast, another update coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll look forward to it. thanks, kari. >> 6:21. next on "today in the bay," chaos at malls on a busy return day. coming up for you, two northern california malls forced to close after major fights break out. plus nbc bay area responds. >> lost and found, a piece of luggage goes missing, and a mysterious monthly charge appears out of nowhere. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, "nbc bay area responds," next.

form of smaller cases like tanya's in pittsburg, an airline temporarily lost her luggage so she had to buy a few replacement clothes to get her by. we helped her get a $48.95 reimbursement. in san jose luscia called telemundo 48 responde, arlen fernandez sorted out a mystery involving a monthly charge on her bank account. in the end luscia got a $90 refund. we say it all the time scrutinize the monthly statements and avoid billing surprises. perhaps we can help you, call us any time, 888-996-tips in english or 844-408-4848 in espaniol. have a great weekend. >> you, too, chris. a fight involving more than 150 minors causing two malls in stockton to close. >> this happened around 5:30 last night. police say they were escorted out of the mall, but they didn't say why. and that's when several fights started. then the teenagers left and it
6:26 am
was taken to the mall across the street. >> we want to be safe and clean. >> one person was taken to the hospital, and no one else was hurt. police say they are still investigating. no arrests have been made. quick work from rescue crews save a dog in a canyon. it happened about 6:00 last night in san diego. police say the dog was walking off the leash when it fell into that canyon. rescue crews used harnesses, they manually pulled that dog eventually up to safety. lucky dog there. coming up next on "today in the bay," santa clara county's vta making some major changes to its transit operations, for quicker service. but one high school says its students are being left stranded. plus breaking news out of the south bay. several people pulled out from a burning warehouse in oakland, including a pregnant woman. coming up in a live report, hear from one man who ran into that burning building to help. it is 6:26 right now. you're watching "today in the bay."

6:29 am
right now at 6:30, breaking news to tell you about, several people pulled out of a burning oakland warehouse overnight. coming up in a live report we'll tell you more about that rescue. it's a chilly start across the bay area. taking a live look outside, beautiful start. san francisco, oakland and san jose, you can see the clear skies there. we don't have that blanket of clouds to keep us warm. some of you may be even waking up to a little bit of frost this
6:30 am
morning. "today in the bay's" kari hall is tracking what we can expect for the weekend forecast, see if there's a warmup at all. right now, it is cold outside. taking a live look outside in san jose, i believe. there it is, and survey says -- >> 42 degrees! brrrr! >> we're so spoiled here in dal ic california. >> we are. >> i need my parka right now. it was in the low 40s overnight in downtown san jose. so we would love a warmup, kari. >> we'll get that this afternoon. the outside temperature we're feeling the san jose airport is about the same temperature inside the studio right now. we're freezing in livermore, also below freezing in the north bay, san martin is now 32 degrees. so we're going to wake up to some 30s and head out the door for that morning commute, where you may be blasting the heat. you may also have to scrape some frost off of the windshield, in
6:31 am
antioch temperatures around 40 degrees but a nice warmup today, with some mostly sunny skies, all of our microclimates will have high temperatures near normal, reaching into the mid to upper 50s, as you head out on the roads this morning, a look at our overall view of the traffic maps, and the flow of the commute across the bay area looks pretty good. a lot of green sensors, even though we've seen a couple incidents on the roads not causing any backups, for the south bay we have a smooth flow of traffic, as some people head back to work this morning, but we haven't seen anything to slow things down, so let's hope it stays that way. i'll have another look at weather and traffic coming up again in about five minutes. >> looking forward to t kari, thank you. back to the breaking news that we've been covering the last hour, there was a fire at an oakland warehouse and a woman who is 6 months pregnant was hurt. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live for us at the scene, talking to people who escaped from the flames. bob? >> that's thom. >> excuse me, thom? >> reporter: good morning, you guys.
6:32 am
i did learn a little bit more about why they may have taken so long for the fire department to knock down the flames here, having trouble. they stopped now they're not hitting it with the water like they were for quite a while trying to get the flames knocked down. i talked to a man who lived and worked in here and he said they were actually, i told you about the liquidation of old estates going on, they had furniture and all sorts of things in there, that may have created fuel for this fire but also he said they were doing stripping of furniture and restaining, all of that is highly flammable and could have caused firefighters a lot of problems getting the fire out. at 2:30 this morning, the place did start on fire. the people who lived here may have been as many as eight of them, smelled like an electrical fire, a lot of garbage and other debris blocking doors. only one way in and out, they said, that was by design from the landlord, who was trying to protect the merchandise inside of the building that he sold at
6:33 am
liquidation sales. and one of the tenants actually had to go into an upstairs loft and rescue a man and a woman, a pregnant woman, 33 years old, 6 months pregnant and this is what he said he had to do to get her out. >> we were in the front of the building and we heard her screaming, and yes, there wasn't any fire at that point but the smoke was completely filling the area upstairs where she was. >> didn't know if they were going to make it out. i didn't know if they were going to make it out. >> reporter: they said they couldn't see, there was so much smoke. the flames were maybe up to their knees at that time as they were trying to get out. john ayers said we to reach through the smoke feeling with his hands until he could find that woman who had burns they described on her arms and her face, battalion chief on the scene described them as minor injuries. she was taken to summit hospital
6:34 am
and treated for the injuries. we don't know if she's still in the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery as we understand, again, she's six months pregnant. we do not know the condition of the unborn child. we're learning a little bit more about this building. there was a fire here five years ago where they had to rescue an individual. there's been a record, they red tagged this building in november, telling the landlord nobody is supposed to be living here, according to tenants they were spending, paying the owner $1,000 a month and sometimes as many as ten of them and also the battalion chief told me there's an extensive record on this building with the fire marshal did not want to go into any more detail. the fire marshal should be able to give us more detail when we rifz on t he arrives on the scene. tom jensen, "today in the bay." >> very concerning, thank you very much, thom. 6:34. only on nbc bay area, a giant
6:35 am
giant redwood tree killed her brother in muir woods christmas eve. his sister is speaking out. he was visiting his sister from minnesota on a hike when his sister and her boyfriend, with them, and as they were leaving they heard something like rocks falling. they ran to avoid the tree that was falling. it missed her and her boyfriend but fell on her brother who was a few feet away. >> i noticed his shoe, my brother's, and then i knew that something was very wrong. we just unfortunately happened to be at that wrong time at the wrong place. >> very tragic. that area where the tree fell is now closed to the public, but the rest of the park is now open. we know this morning the name of the father who died earlier this week along the coast. officials say 53-year-old paul lewis saved his 10-year-old daughter from the water off of carmel river state beach. she was floating out to sea in an inflatable device.
6:36 am
crews rescued both of them but lewis died. lewis' daughter was taken to the hospital with possible hypothermia. no word on her condition. this morning we're getting a clearer picture how the deadly camp fire that tore through butte county last year is changing the population landscape. new data of the department of finance shows more than 10,000 people moved out of the area, many relocating to other cities in the county and state outside the affected cities of paradise, and concao. the camp fire was the deadliest fire in the state's history. flames killed 86 people, displacing nearly 36,000 and destroying almost 15,000 homes. this weekend, south bay transportation is getting a makeover just in time for the new year. vta workers are prepping for a new service rollout starting tomorrow around santa clara county when people will see 3,300 new bus stop signs, a
6:37 am
new light rail line and improved routes. vta says people can expect shorter wait times as well. all bus and light rail rides will be free starting tomorrow and through the end of the year. if your teenager has afterschool practices or activities in palo alto, vta will start running only two buses on the 88 route after school starting on monday. one right after the bell rings, the other around 4:30. before every bus ran every hour until 6:30, so that will be a big change especially kids that have a lot of afterschool activities. >> absolutely. >> clubs, sports, the works. >> never really thought about it, being here people waiting public transits. >> you don't have the areas where you're used to having cold weather. so we're dealing with some freezing temperatures and during
6:38 am
the afternoons we warm up nicely. tomorrow high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s with sunshine across the bay area. as we head into sunday, rain chances doesn't look like a significant storm here, it brings in some spotty showers in and out of here quickly sunday into early monday morning. hitting the road to seattle, watch the 49ers game, we'll see cold weather there in seattle and temperatures in the mid-40s. having a watch party in the bay area we'll also be watching it on tv, with some rain possibly falling here. if you're headed out and enjoying some hiking time with a family today, expect muir woods highs to reach 58 degrees. 54 tomorrow with sunshine. just on sunday we're watching out for another chance of rain and then in the tri-valley, we have sunshine today and tomorrow, but then with some cooler temperatures, we are going to see highs in the low 50s. here is a look at the traffic map as we get a look at the
6:39 am
south bay, and we are going to see still a smooth flow of traffic, looking at the richmond-san rafael bridge. a clear start this morning, and it looks like there is a little bit more in the way of a backup here, as you approach that toll plaza, but not going to see that really having an impact on your drive to work. so it's still a fairly good drive, seven minutes to get you across the bay bridge. the richmond bridge i should say. the bay bridge is about eight minutes and the san mateo bridge is about 13 minutes in the tri-valley. we have all green, that means that people are flowing at speed. laura and marcus? >> thanks, kari. coming up for you here on "today in the bay," a south bay woman found dead just a few feet from her home. her family says she was beaten and robbed. coming up, what surveillance cameras captured shortly after the attack. and avoiding a strike. the contract deal just reached for nurses at hospitals in one bay area county. and taking a look at the big board for you this morning, we want to show you it.
6:40 am
well, okay, there we go. you can see the dow is up 61 points. stocks hit nor all-time highs as the market rallies into the end of the decade. more news for you. >> look at this, showdown in seattle. the funny comparison the niners defensive coordinator is making about this seahawks rivalry. a lot more news ahead. you're watching "today in the bay."

6:42 am
6:43 am
right now at 6:43 on your friday morning, a beautiful sunrise as we wrap up this year, last friday of 2019, and it's going to be a cold start this morning. we have some mid-30s here in palo alto, but we do lead in to a beautiful day, with some sunshine and highs into the mid-50s. a look at the morning commute quickly as we get an overall view of the bay area. a smooth flow of traffic. hope it stays that way. i'll have another update coming up in about five minutes.
6:44 am
>> thanks, kari. it is 6:43. tragedy for a south bay family, when a woman is found dead just outside of her home and police say they need your help in trying to track down her killer. "today in the bay's" bob redell live outside san jose police headquarter this is morning. are police saying much with b this, bob? >> reporter: they want to you look at surveillance video from a neighbor's security camera, hoping to jog your memory. the victim is a 45-year-old woman who died this past christmas eve after being beaten during a robbery late last week outside her home in san jose. we did speak with her husband, he tells us his wife was a loving wife and mother. both moved from vietnam to the bay area three years ago. on the night of december 19th, xuan returned home from her job as a cook, pulled into the driveway of the couple's home on stagehand drive in south san
