emily, abbey and molly, where are you? >> emily, abbey and molly, where are you? there they are you almost got me. you almost got me. where are you all from >> dc. >> colorado. >> and portland, oregon. >> but you all grew up where >> flagstaff, arizona. >> from arizona. and i understand that this was a bit of a surprise for one of you. which one? >> me. >> a surprise for her, got her the ticket so she could join us today. >> i love this what great sisters and explain the pictures here. >> so for years, my mom made us matching outfits, so we went from christmas, to easter, so we had to carry that through to today, so we actually have dressed alike. >> we got to show mom. mom is watching in arizona. >> who made the shirts >> that was me. >> of course well merry christmas happy new year thank you for coming to the plaza. >> it has been a dream of ours >> why don't you come inside. >> come inside
8:32 am
after we're done here, bring yourself inside and watch the rest inside. yeah >> you made their day. >> are you allowed to do that? >> i think we are. >> i think we are. >> craig is just making up rules as we go. >> i love they have matching outfits on it reminds me of your family for matching outfits and you should start the tradition. >> i think it is a good one. >> well, coming up, the rising popularity in laser treatment. people are turning to them for a host of reasons. but are they worth the money and just how safe are they we'll find out about all of that >> plus, a remarkable story of a chef an outdoorsman who refuses to let a near death experience slow him down. >> it really is a remarkable story. looking forward to catching up with him in a moment. >> but before all of that, how about a final check of the forecast. >> yes, but first -- >> this sunday night football weather is brought to you by, verizon. the network more people rely on. >> thank you let's take a look at what is
8:33 am
going on across the country over the next couple of days. we've got this big storm system that is going to create some delays most likely in denver, later on today, although we're only looking at one to three inches of snow in that area phoenix, we're starting off with some of that rain. saturday, is when things take a turn minneapolis, omaha, denver, likely to see some delays at the airport, because of the snow and the wind, and down in dallas, we're looking at snow, or rain showers, and storms, that could create some delays at the airport. then on sunday, that heavy rain, moves to the east, so cleveland, nashville, atlanta, could see some of those delays, with the good morning, i'm kari hall, we will have a nice mild afternoon for shoes outdoor activities. on sunday more clouds as we track rain moving into the bay area. mostly scattered to light showers and in requester next week we'll see mostly sunny
8:34 am
skies continuing into the start of the new year even with some above normal setemperatures. >> we've got lots of fun football this weekend. sunday night, of course, is football night in america. and the big game is san francisco 49ers heading up to seattle taking on the seahawks the winner of this game wins the nfc west and the last time these two teams matched up, it was a wild game, seattle came out on tom. we will see what happens this time around, if the game goes into overtime, that's sunday night. football night in america craig? >> mr. roker would be proud, dylan. up next, get ready for a cheerleading drama with a big twist. we will talk to the women behind the new show "da me.re

8:36 am
8:37 am
welcome back a new tv drama examines the lives of high school girls through the cut throat sport of cheerleading and it comes with a dramatic criminal twist. >> it is called "dare me" on our sister network usa and it follows the team's new coach take a look. >> what do i see sprayed hands. gummy bear thighs. backyard tumblers. but i don't see a squad. and i do not see my top girl >> best top girl >> my squads, you earn your spot you get strong, you rise that's how you get to regionals. become champions get more for yourself than big gulps and ballers. >> we graduated past ballers in the eighth grade >> no phones in my squad.
8:38 am
>> tough as nails. >> the coach is here with megan abbott, who wrote the popular novel the show is based on willa and megan, good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> let me start with you, what was it like to play this role, and you are tough. where do you find that fierceness >> well, megan's writing, the novel is so clear and so specific about the way that she moves through the world and i think i kind of studied it, a very good bible to have about how colette works as a human. >> where did you come up with the character and the idea for the show, which is a little dark, it becomes a little bit of a mystery. >> yes, it does. i mean it is always my experience, the female adolescence, it is a really messy time, it is a time with
8:39 am
lots of conflicting feelings, and big feelings, and just sort of figuring out how you want toe one point of view, so you d become a woman, and i just wanted to sort of get underneath that, and this became the perfect dynamic, this sort of complicated coach, athlete relationship, that you see in male stories often but rarely female stories. >> for fans of the book itself, how is this show different or is it different in a measurable way >> it follows the story rather closely but the book is only the one point of view, so you don't get collet, and you don't get to go behind the coach's closed doors, and you find out what makes her tick, what makes her so tough. >> why cheerleading? >> did you want to focus on cheerleading >> it is such a competitive sport and the cliche is it is pompon waving and hip swinging but it is really quite dangerous and very risk taking and young women who do it love it. so i wanted to get underneath that a bit. >> were you an actual cheerleader growing up >> no, i was not >> you had to learn the moves. >> yes, i had to
8:40 am
we had cheer camp for a couple of weeks, before we started shooting the pilot, where basically, because we had a lot of professional cheerleaders on the show, and dancers, and everyone who wasn't, a professional in that sense, we came and we learned everything that we could in that period of time about it. >> this becomes a bit of a mystery. willa, were you a little surprised as you took on this role, the fact that it becomes a little dark and where it ends up, basically? >> well, no. actually i feel like you can kind of tell from the pilot episode that i had read before i had read the entire book, that colette is a character with a lot of secrets and a lot of darkness, and so i think it's, you know, you're at the right jumping off point. >> megan, what is it like to have a story of yours brought to life on screen >> it's really beyond thrilling. and very surreal i've been developing it for seven years. >> seven years. >> the book came out in 2012, so it it sort of has been my baby so it really means so much and to have a character i know so well, embodies so beautifully by willa has been a big thrill, because she is, you know, she
8:41 am
just goes to dark places, and it was just, it feels like to have her in good hands. >> and willa what do you hope young women and young men take from this. >> i think it is exciting to be in a point in time where there are complicated female characters who are not just one archetype. and i think that obviously, all of the three main women in this show have both a lot of goodness and you know, a lot of darkness inside of them and i think there is something to inflate, and both sides of that. >> i love that idea. megan, was that part of your goal to have complicated female characters >> absolutely. because we know we are complicated as women and it seems we have a male prerogative that he is serious and enigmatic and it is thrill a-thrill to get into those complications with women. >> willa, megan, looks like a solid show >> you can catch the series premiere of "dare me" this sunday, 10:00, 9:00 central only on usa. up next, are laser treatments really a miracle cure for everything, from wrinkles to sun spots? our in depth look at the most popular procedures
8:42 am
but first, this is "today" on nbc.
8:43 am
8:44 am
we're back. we're back 8:44 now with "today" wellness. >> this morning, a guide to popular laser treatments and what one board-certified dermatologist says you need to look out for if you're considering them here's nbc's morgan radford. >> you've heard the assurances, right? lasers promising to remove everything from dark spots and unwanted hair to unsightly veins. but does it really work? >> so each laser does something different. >> that's right.
8:45 am
they're very specific. >> we went to find out >> in this room over here, we tend to treat sun damage, especially sun spots >> dr. robert analic sees thousands of patients a month and says three out of every four are looking for some type of laser treatment. >> how popular are laser treatments right now >> extremely popular the number of treatments performed last year by dermatologists was 3.5 million and that number is nearly double what it was search or eight years ago. the number of men having laser procedures is skyrocketing as well. >> so we decided to take a closer look at each one. from sun damage. >> so you're just hitting each dark spot. >> to collagen boosters. >> we're stimulating a response by the skin to make more collagen and to make the collagen in a healthier state. >> there is also a laser for hair removal. >> what did it feel like >> like a gush of cold air and a
8:46 am
rubber band snap. >> according to a survey, laser resurfacing, which treats wrinkling and fine lines is the most popular laser procedure, but when it comes to minimally invasive cosmetic work, laser hair removal is by far the most popular and yet not all states require physicians to administer the procedures and as beauty trends like laser facials which claim to brighten skin and smooth the texture are on the rise, lasers like these can be quite risky. >> the most common risks which are very rare, fortunately, are things like burns, infection, scar and discoloration >> the biggest things to remember, don't have laser treatments done when you're tan compared to the normal skin tone and for safety, always be treated by a board certified dermatologist and wherever you're treated, make sure there are several lasers available because it is not a one size fits all approach. still, the doctor says the risk can be worth the award.
8:47 am
>> hundreds of people are coming through every week, and the vast majority of my patients are haves laser treatments, safely and effectively. >> never tried this. >> yes >> have you? >> i have used it for eczema before and it worked. >> yes. >> and you've used it. >> i had a scar on my forehead and it worked. >> up next, a talented chef, whose entire life was changed by a terrible accident, the remarkable things that he is doing with his second chance it really is a remarkable story. you don't want to miss it. but first this is "today" on
8:48 am
8:49 am
we're back with today's food. this morning, a chef who was given a second chance at life after a bizarre and terrible accident. >> his resilience and courage as he battled to recover, are sure to inspire you. we are going to talk to him in just a moment. but first, his story. >> there's a complete parallel for me between being outside, you're limited to only your own curiosity, but food, if you can
8:50 am
abolish fear from your >> for the 37-year-old edwardo garcia, each month of montana fresh mountain air is another chance at life. >> the outdoors is sort of where i reached that, and then as a chef, obviously, it is where i go to get a lot of what i eat. i was a yacht chef making good money. i had a good career. kind of stepping into this next thing. >> on october 9th, 2011, everything changed while hiking, garcia saw what he believed to be a dead bear cub and a large tin can, as he got closer. >> i took a knife out of my hip and put it in my left hand and 24 volts of power arced and i was electrocuted. >> the can was compromised and dangerously active. >> my eyes open and i knew in that moment i was die can and i was walking to get help. i was walking to save my life. >> within three hours, he was
8:51 am
sent to the university of utah burn trauma center, and charred and near death, he would spend 48 days undergoing 18 surgeries. >> bone chilling quote from the surgeon on call was that i was a bag of bones with a heartbeat when i was gurneyed in that day. >> then -- >> it was a sunday afternoon and the surgeon just said hey, here's the deal. here's the infection, in your damaged left hand. >> the following tuesday, surgeons amputated his left hand >> i had a job to do and my job was to be an active participant in my recovery and so relearning, it was everything trying to learn, refine knife skills or peeling. and i had to learn, i don't need to be a perfectionist in the kitchen anymore and my recreation is learning how to fly fish and learning how to be outside safely again it changes you >> that's rhubarb. >> that's rhubarb. >> i thought about why me? and why was i spared or how did i make it through that every day? we are all born fighters
8:52 am
and that's the only thing that got me out of the woods that day, is nothing remained except the fighting will to live. that life was not meant to be walked solo. and i think i knew that before the injury, and yet i don't know if i was truly living it >> eduardo garcia, good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. >> it is an amazing story. on so many levels. first of all, how are you doing today? >> feeling fine. feeling good >> you got a great sense of humor about all of this. >> you have to i think we decided early on as a family, i shouldn't say we, and that's important, i think it was my older sister, you got to laugh through this you know, and you know, and i think the next step was we had to encourage others to laugh with us. they don't know how to approach it from the outside. >> where does that resilience come from. obviously you take it in from your family and the people you surround yourself, but how do you get yourself through each next step? >> one step at a time. one at a time. i remember cooking at 15 and having all of these tickets up and they're all the same thing, burger, cheeseburger, pizza, fries. >> one at a time one at a time.
8:53 am
>> and we know you got married earlier this year. congratulations. >> thank you very much. >> talk about what this year has been like for you, both personally, but also professionally, in terms of your cooking, and in terms of your healing. >> well, personally, i mean getting married is tremendous. 38 and so it is coming up to that crux move in my life, it is huge, and then of course, the professional side, working, my food company, montana mex, and trying to pay attention and respect the recovery process, the emotional recovery process and also professionally, to still be me, still be a chef and put myself into that and then a funky balance, but working to find that balance still. >> how much of cooking has been a part of your healing process >> it has been huge. it has been huge you know, at one point, just looking at holding a knife, or trying to hold a piece of produce, how do you get a hook and how do you figure that out and you have to step in, step up to the table, and just start participating and say all right, one at a time. and maybe it is failure, it maybe a success, it doesn't really matter, just step up. >> just a few days away from a new year, what's 2020 holding in
8:54 am
store for eduardo. >> you know, i think i've kind of, i have this burning curiosity, and on the one hand, i think, well, that's what got me here. and yet, i realize curiosity is a skill set, it is a beautiful thing and yet focusing back and i think i realized that humility is a superpower and saying i am going to humbly step into my dreams and aspirations and invite others to participate and say all right, let's take this idea, let's take it and see where it can go. >> what are your specials? >> what is your go to recipe >> you know, i love cooking over coals. i love cooking over a fire i think it is just an innate connection we all have, and i love doing it together in a group you know, so i could cook by myself, probably taste great, but it always tastes so much better when i'm doing it with family, with friends, with others. >> we thank you so much for sharing your story with us and for your strength and your resilience thank you. >> my pleasure. >> a remarkable story. >> it truly is. by the way, before we get
