good morning to you. it is new year's eve 2019. looking live out our window over san francisco, and the city already looking pretty festive, but what will it be like around midnight? good question. >> a lot of fun, i hope. >> pretty quiet. >> good morning to you. i'll be asleep. thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. we want to show you the countdown to the new year. it is on, just 19 hours until we ring in 2020. celebrations planned all around the bay area, and maybe in your own living room and of course in the big apple. a live look at times square where preparations are under way for the big ball drop tonight. >> why don't we start counting down now. >> 19 hours.

>> i start during the holidays. >> tick, tick, tick. >> a lot of people want to know what the weather will be like. >> the fireworks. >> exactly, the fog is of concern. we are tracking the possibility of seeing patchy fog and more in the interior valueleys. right now in san francisco, clear skies, 48 degrees. wind speeds are calm and look at the temperatures throughout the bay area, we're at about 41 degrees in san jose. 40 degrees in santa cruz, and if you're anywhere near the santa cruz area within the next couple of hours, we're seeing gusty conditions for some of our mountaintop areas, gusts upwards of 40 plus miles per hour. in the lower elevations not dealing with the wind and a quick check of the temperature trend, san jose clear, sunshine, don't have to worry about the rain. i'll go more into detail what you can expect tonight in a bit. let's send things over to mike. >> chilly out there. also looking over here walnut creek where you could see the light traffic. nthbound through

the area north through walnut creek, right around main the roadway shows light traffic but there is debris reported and coming past that off-ramp. be careful. wood scattered across lanes, reported to chp no crashes but there may be a traffic break. i'll let you know if they give me more detail. the commute pushes toward the bay bridge toll plaza. yesterday we had a backup at this time. today none right now. we'll show you the shot the rest of the bay. a lot of green, marcus. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news overseas, these are live pictures right now, hundreds of people protesting at the u.s. embassy in baghdad and some made it inside the compound. the live look of the demons areor angry following deadly u.s. air strikes last week that killed 25 fhters from the iran-backed shiite militia in iraq. the mourners held funerals for

those killed in baghdad in a neighborhood earlier and marched on to the heavily fortified green zone and kept walking until they reached the embassy. sunday u.s. forces bombed the militia after accusing them of firing rockets on a u.s. base in iraq that killed one american and injured others. the new year will bring in loss as well for t new laws and that means more money if you use b.a.r.t. >> bob redell is live at the warm springs station in fremont with more and folks don't like hearing they're going to pay more, bob. >> reporter: and they're going to be paying precisely 5.4% more starting tomorrow. we're talking about an extra 10 r.t. say fremont and taking a trip through th that trip today will cost you

$6.75. tomorrow the same ride will be costing you $7.10 an increase of 35 cents per ride, 70 cents round trip, $3.50 if you're doing that round trip five days a week. i should have been a math teacher. that was pretty good. this increase which is based on inflation is the last of four fare increases to take place every two years which the b.a.r.t. board approved back in 201. the board approved another round of increases in effect in 2022, '24 and '26. b.a.r.t. said this money will pay for expenses like new rail cars, new train control system and expanded maintenance facility and more frequent service and in aase the transit agency notes it's not heavily subsidized by budget, that its operating expenses rely on fares, two-thirds of the operating budget does. incidentally, low-income riders on b.a.r.t. will receive a 20%

metropolitan a pilot program transportation commission. that program does not go into effect until20, which means that tomorrow, those low income rider also stis will sti paying that 5.4% increase just like the rest of us. reporting live outside warm springs b.a.r.t. in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> and joy the lower fares for the rest of the day i guess. thanks, bob. bay area attorneys today are expected to file a new wave of lawsuits tied to the latest church sex abuse accusations. nearly a year ago oakland's diocese released the names of nearly 50 priests and other clergy members accused of abussing minors. many of the priests are dead and none still work in the ministry. abuse victims will attend today's news conference. police hope this image can help track down two thieves they say used a stun gun on a best buy security guard. surveillance cameras caught the

pair walking into the san bruno best buy. they stole a pair of laptops. when he guard tried to stop him they tased him. the pair was seen driving off in a silver or gray nissan or cadillac. an act of kindness from a total stranger. >> you may remember when we told you with the gomez nunez family earlier this month. their home burned down in a fire and while staying in a hotel their car was broken into. the family lost most of their belongings but "the mercury news" reports a los gatos family mailed them a check for $20,000. >> oh my goodness. uber and post mates are taking the state of california to court. the companies are suing over the state's new labor law set to go into effect tomorrow. it would require gig workers to be reclassified as employees, but uber and post mates claim it is unconstitutional for

commute directions right now, look how easy that is. we'll show you a bigger view, coming up. i'm rahel some man at cnbc headquarters. wall street is set to open slightly higher on this last trading day of the year. stocks fell yesterday. the dow and nasdaq and s&p 500 seeing their worst in a month, low volume and some investors took profits at the end of the year but having their best year since at least 2013. on today's watch list reports on home sales and consumer confidence. u-haul says employees hired before february 1st willot b affected, u-haul says new applicants will be asked about nicotine use and consent in states where screening is allowed. and fedex and u.p.s. are planning big fees on the big packages. they will be imposing a $24 fee on boxes weighing more than 50

today should be much better for l. for new year's eve which is good news. microclimate highs in the 60s, upper 50s in san jose, 60 degrees. oakland 57. this is what will happen later tonight that will impact everybody's plans, before we get to that, let's talk about the waves. we're talking about a strong wind offshore that's sending that swell around our coastline and this is kicking up the beach hazard statement that will remain in place through today and into tomorrow because of large breakers and sneaker waves so just don't go swimming and never turn your back to a wave. here it is your new year's eve forecast for san francisco, headed to the embarcadero, take your jacket. our temperatures will be dipping down into the 40s but there's always that windchill factor and it's going to be partly cloudy. so we are worried about the fog in through inland valleys. patchy fog is possible, don't forget your jacket there either. temperatures will be in the 40s. make sure to wear some layers tonight as we get ready to

welcome the first day of 2020 into wednesday, it will be about 59 degrees. clouds increase, and we stay dry with a chance of spotty drizzle headed into the first saturday of the new year. mike, how are the roads? >> they're looking good. i have one misplaced camera shot and you'll see that. looking over here, can't end the new year without one of those. looking over here at a smooth drive, green sensors around the bay. a light flow of traffic. i expect that for the morning commute and afternoon and especially tonight. be careful on the roadways. we have reports of debris or some activity northbound 101 on the northern side of the golden gate bridge and disabled vehicle southbound coming toward the bridge but that should be off of highway 101. i was going to show you the golden gate bridge but i didn't change the camera we have on 101. the golden gate bridge has much less traffic. no problem northbound a couple cars going through the area.

i'll track that closely and show it to you if i need to. light traffic flow yesterday a sizeable backup, most people are preparing for tonight getting their outfits ready. mass transit good discounts, special service for many agencies. check websites for specifics. the san francisco bay ferry have no service tomorrow and today is regular service. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. 4:49 for you right now. the san jose womanus morning hit-and-run is scheduled to return to court five weeks from now after a judge yesterday denied bail. ricky martinez died after he was runned down by a suspect on east santa clara street, this happened after investigators say martinez shot the suspect's relative during an argument. sabrina gutierrez is accused of driving on to a sidewalk where she struck and killed martinez as he tried to leave the scene.

a private company that operates several immigration detention centers in california is suing over a new state ban that takes effect tomorrow. come the new year, california's department of corrections will no longer be allowed to enter into contracts with private prisons. starting in 2028 private immigration detention facilities will also be banned. the group is suing just one new multibillion-dollar contract to run new detention centers here in california. it calls the ban unconstitutional arguing its relationship is with the federal government and not with the state. new details and a lifeline for seniors who take special classes provided by city college of san francisco. supervisors have locked in funding to keep the 17 classes going. those classes are taught at about a dozen senior centers serving about 100 disabled older adults in areas like physical fitness, language arts and music appreciation. the new year will add more green to the state budget, where it comes to legalized pot but it could also drive users back to

to run for their lives are left to hunker down on a beach in australia, no other escape from a fast-moving wildfire in the town of malacuda in the state of victoria. they became surrounded by flames and people are using boats to try to get to safety. two new deaths are being reported because of those fires, bringing the total up to 12, and many more people are still missing.
