we're live in san francisco with how police say you can stay safe if you're headed to the embarcadero. and a wave alert for you, wicked winds mean dangerous waters are set to slam the northern california coast. we're tracking when the big waves will hit. microclimate forecast doing? headed out the door here say quick check of your daytime highs, upper 50s, low 60s. notice the bay area sky, coast, bay and inland a mix of sun and clouds. i'll have an exact breakdown of the temperatures headed into new year's eve tonight for inland areas and the coastline with just a little bit, we'll send things over to mike. >> breaking news in the traffic center, you might have caught that as it happened last report. we have more information northbound 880. we have good news. two of your four lanes are open, but the other two lanes are still blocked, oxygen tanks reportedly fell out of one of the vehicles, involved in a crash north 880 at 29th. coliseum toward 66th, so it's starting at the overcrossing and building. it will continue back toward about 98th. that is a slow section just north of high street is where the lanes are blocked. we show you on the map, you have some options. because traffic is so very light, west 580 an easy breezy drive over there. we have international boulevard a major surface street will take

you past the area as well. also if you're over in alameda you stick on doolittle or some of the other roadways and get over there via the tunnel, getting over toward oakland and downtown. the bay bridge toll plaza has no backup so just one section of northbound 880 is the one to avoid as you travel through oakland and we still have this crash all the slowing just about cleared over at yountville. back to you. >> thanks, mike. back to breaking news we've been telling you about all morning. hundreds of people protesting at the u.s. embassy in baghdad and some have made it inside the compound. people there angry following a deadly u.s. strike last week that killed 25 fighters from an iran-backed shiite militia in iraq. the mourners held funerals for those killed in baghdad in a neighborhood earlier and marched on to the heavily fortified green zone and kept walking until they reached the embassy. sunday u.s. forces bombed the militia after accusing them of firing rockets on a u.s. base in iraq that killed one american. 6:02. it is the end of a decade and even better, the start of a

"today in the bay's" thom jensen is live from san francisco where police are expecting big crowds for the fireworks show. thom, we have no known threats at this point, right? >> reporter: right, nothing as far as we saw like a couple years ago, 2017, going into 2018 after that thwarted christmas plot and a lot of fear surrounding what might happen around the embarcadero and other large gatherings. nothing like that according to sfpd. they'll be focusing a lot of their concentration all hands on deck approach new year's eve to crowd control and traffic control. when you mix booze in for people

just keeping the peace. a lot of people are headed to the embarcadero and other spots that are popular for the celebrations and fireworks show but a spokesperson for sfpd tells me there will be a police presence everywhere. >> we will be deployed marina, south of market, firerman's wharf, everywhere and have our officers patrolling in uniform and plain clothes, we also have special units on foot, on motorcycle, normal patrol vehicles and we're going to be ready for just about anything. >> reporter: of course a lot of people looking for the perfect backdrop for the fireworks show, head to emeryville or down to the embarcadero, like we talked about and other locations. one other popular spot in years past has always been treasure island but san francisco police department warning people to stay away from treasure island this year. there's so much construction on

connection with any fire before january 29th of this year. at stake, more than $13 billion, a figure recently negotiated between pg&e and victims of lawyers in the bankruptcy case. the court has been working to track down folks who are eligible to submit those claims. >> 6:06. in the tri-valley, residents in san ramon are on edge following a series of home burglaries. these are six on saturday night and several different neighborhoods. one of those burglaries was caught on surveillance camera. three people they believe are responsible for all of the burglaries. >> they almost always go to the master bedroom and ransack that, steal jewelry and cash and guns. >> i'm scared. i thought this building was safe. my kids are there, my parents are there. >> police haven't learned much from looking at these videos.

those hoods are up, faces covered, not much on the getaway car either. the it's a dark mercedes with paper license plates on it. here's something to chew on ahead of your new year's dinner. usually the bay area's dungeoness crab season is in full swing. if you're a crab lover, you know the past few years are rocky. crabbers tell "the press democrat" once again they're feeling the pinch because quantity has been lower than it has been first believed. the season got a later start this year as well. enjoy what little you find. later today historic restaurant in hayward is closing its door. the hayward ranch has been open for 71 years. the manager says the owner is sick and decided to put the building up for sale. the contents are also up for sale, includes 1930s telephone and a wooden phone booth. >> collectible items. >> yes. look at the pacifica pier, some of those waves are rolling

in already and the biggest waves are yet to come, starting just a few hours from now. by the time the peak hits tomorrow the largest waves, mavericks are supposed to surpass 35 feet. >> one of my favorite new year's days was spending the day at the beach with the kids, but i'll tell you, the waves were not anything like what we're seeing now. >> that's one of the things, too, we worry about. a lot of people like to go to the beach and enjoy family time but with the sneaker waves, they can catch you at any given moment. for the next two days we have to remain on alert which is why the national weather services ahay beach hazard statement in effect which means we're tracking dangerous waves, 10 to 20 feet and at the mavericks area possibly higher than that. don't turn your back to a wave. just don't do it. the picture might be beautiful. it's not worth it. if you get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore. the best advice don't go swimming. temperatures in the 50s, low 60s. we'll have a closer look at your new year's eve forecast shortly. look at the live shot once again the traffic builds as you approach the coliseum.

you will slow toward 98th, the bottom of the screen past the 98th avenue on-ramp. right side folks getting off the freeway headed past the coliseum complex over here trying to avoid this backup. international boulevard still shows us a smooth drive. this is horrible right now because the oxygen tanks are still in the roadway, blocking two of your four lanes. half the nimitz freeway is blocked around 29th. you've got over two miles of backup i showed you back here at the coliseum. international boulevard and west 580 moves smoothly. if you're on international boulevard that say major surface street. west 580 watch your speed even though you may have to take a slight reroute. 17 to 18-minute drive delay as far as wazical clats. it will map you around if you have to take to city streets. there is no backup at the bay bridge toll plaza and lighter now because of the traffic held up in oakland and the rest of the bay hitting the green sensor area. back to you. >> thanks, mike.

it is :12, look at the stunning view of the golden gate bridge from our sutro tower camera. beautiful clear skies. we're talking about the new year's eve forecast very important and also i'll have a closer look at what you can expect headed into this weekend. even though we're drying out it looks like rain is trying to make its way in. details coming up. and we're trying to get through this, this is almost three miles of backup now north 880. obviously this direction headed past the coliseum. the crash leaves oxygen tanks scattered across lanes of northbound 880. the nimitz is jammed. i'll talk you through options and we have a delay from mass transit. we'll talk about that coming up. good morning, very happy new year's eve to you as well. today is the last day of trading. despite these negative numbers here, 2019 is going to go down in the record books as a banner year, best in decades for stocks.

there's some sell-off here, this happens on the last day of the year. you sell off your badly performing stocks and get a tax deduction. president trump signed a new bill into law that should help fight robo calls. it also prohibits cell phone companies from charging you money to filter calls out. it's not going to stop them all together but a good start. uber and post mate suing to stop ab-5 from taking effect that forces some to treat freelance workers as employees. in uber's case it would be its drivers. the law was designed with uber and other rideshare companies in mind and parallels some past court decisions. but it's also created some unexpected consequences. other workers like freelance writers are affected. the law's coauthor, southern california lawmaker lorena gonzalez has been unapologetic. uber accuses her of being overly hostile to ridesharing companies. she responded on twitter, "come and get me tech bros, i'm here

every single day to take on the plight of workers against big tech. i'm tired of billionaires using technology as an excuse to deprive workers of a livable wage." looking at bay area housing this morning, all kinds of housing reports. there are too many to be honest. they can be confusing. they contradict each other. case-schiller. case-schiller is the gold standard. the schiller half won a nobel prize. the san francisco bay area was the ohm city in the 20 city study where the prices went down. before you get excited, year over year they went down zero decimal 4%. i'm not good at math. if it's a million-dollar median house it's a $4,000 price change which is chump change. >> the difference between buying and not buying. >> it's not the difference between anything. scrawled notes on the back, phoenix did the best of all and

overall about 3.3% rise. i caution when they do this, this is the san francisco census, this would not include santa clara county but only san francisco i think san mateo and then around in to oakland, which the census considers san francisco. >> thank you, scott. we have a new twist this morning in a story raising concerns about hackers and ringing devices. you might have seen video of children hearing somebody they don't know talking to them through those devices but now ring's parent company amazon is facing a lawsuit. an alabama man filed that lawsuit seeking class action status. in the past, ring has linked the problem to customers reusing old passwords saying that two-factor authentication is the way to prevent that. a is it-year-old boy in texas accidentally set his front lawn on fire, take a look at it there. the culprit behind all of this a

downtown san jose pretty look. the fireworks at the discovery museum were a beautiful sight and you'll be good and cold. 40 degrees. wind speeds 3 miles per hour, but we're dipping down into the 30s in some spots. look at santa rosa 39 degrees right now. santa cruz 38, and it is going to get a little bit warmer, daytime highs are expected to warm up into the 50s and 60s but i want to show you the temperature change in some spots including san jose, and look at satellite radar right now. clear skies. we have a good amount of mix and sunshine in through the afternoon, high of about 60 degrees in san jose and the next few days here is a look at what we can expect. the chilly nights, the rain chances will stay to our north for new year's eve and new year's day we'll remain dry and looking out way ahead, by way ahead i mean next weekend into friday and saturday. our best chance of rain might move in late friday. we have this system we're tracking here, but the good news is it looks like that's going to stay far off north and if we do end up seeing rain, it will be

light and mainly for areas north of the golden gate bridge into saturday, and then things should dry out quite nicely as we head into sunday. your first weekend of 2020 is not warmed oshed out by rain. take your coat headed to embarcade embarcadero. new year's eve a partly cloudy night along the coast and inland areas temperatures in the 40s and hopefully carl the fog stays away. mike? how about the traffic alert? >> love you, carl. the traffic alert is the big problem. over here, folks, a live look shows you what you don't want to see. light traffic all over the bay except for this critical portion of the nimitz. this is the coliseum camera we have from 98th up to 29th. we do have the northbound traffic jammed up solid. and that is because there's a crash at 29th with oxygen tanks scattered across your two left lanes, your two fast lanes. your two right lanes are open but folks are slowing down undoubtedly with the flashing lights and activity.

new for you this morning, forget about the 2010s. get ye behind me, 2020 is already in full swing. new zealand fireworks rang in the new year, this happened about 3:00 a.m. our time and it came one hour after samoa and christmas island celebrated the start of the new decade. you know what? the big apple meanwhile new year's eve is still hours away and once again, more than a million people will pack times square to watch that ball drop, counting down the final moments of 2019. >> as you know, it is one of the world's most iconic new year's eve celebrations ever. nbc's chris pallone is live in times square with a preview and looks like you're dry even if you are chilly. chris? >> reporter: yes, that's right, kris and marcus. it's the mist and the drizzle has burned off, and it's still a little chilly and windy with y

expect the mid to upper 40s so nothing to complain about for december 31st here in new york city. especially given the weather over the last couple of years. last year when it was pouring buckets, and then two years ago when it was the second coldest ball drop in new york city history. we'll take what we can get here today. that means that the crowds should be strong. the nypd says 1 million to 1.5 million people expected out here to watch that iconic ball drop. this is a tradition that goes back to 1907, obviously that giant waterford crystal ball a lot different than the first one way back when, back in 1907. in just a short time, the nypd will start to clear times square. right now we have a lot of tourists out walking about. we have seen a lot of the police officers who will be out here tonight start showing up in the last few minutes. the nypd says about 1,000 police officers in total protecting just this area, plain clothes and uniform.

cloud cover along the coast. we are worried about the fireworks. carl the fog so make its way into inland areas overnight. we'll monitor that. hopefully he stays way. 53 degrees overnight. take your coat with you. it's in the 40s and 30s in some spots. mike? >> i say [ speaking in foreign language ] for here, i don't know which is appropriate but it's inappropriate to go through the area. it is appropriate to avoid it because of this big jam right here. this crash blocked two lanes of northbound 880, two are open. the critical section of oakland is jammed up from the coliseum past high street to just shy of 29th, where the crash leaves right now vehicles and one in which is stuck in the roadway and big jam getting up there. west 580 and international boulevard are probably your two easiest avenues to get around that. you're adding another 20 to 25 minutes to the area if you don't avoid 880. once you get to the bay bridge however you get there, it's easy. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news for you this morning overseas, hundreds of people protesting at the u.s.

embassy in baghdad and some have actually made it inside the compound. people are angry following deadly u.s. airstrikes last week that killed 25 fighters from iran-backed shiite militia in iraq. mourners earlier held funerals in one baghdad neighborhood. then they marched over to the heavily fortified green zone and kept walking until they reached the embassy. leaders across the bay area want you to be on the lookout for illegal fireworks during tonight's new year's eve celebrations and in the south bay there are resources to report out of hand revelers as well. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in the east foothills. there are always concerns about wildfires. police are asking people to report their neighbors. how is that going to work out? >> reporter: this is something that the city of san jose has

done before, you'll recall around the fourth of july and doing it again for new year's eve. the city of san jose is rekt vating its online tool for reporting illegal fireworks. the easiest way to do is google san jose fireworks online reporting, the site will come up. you fill out the form with the time and location of the illegal fireworks and if you have them, the names of the people setting them off, if that's something you're comfortable doing with, you have the option of uploading photos and as we reported before, fireworks have been an ongoing problem in the south bay, not only can they be a noisy nuisance, people can get hurt. fires get started. this past fall the san jose city council approved a social host law which means if fireworks are set off on your property in the city of san jose, you're liable, even if you're not the one who lit the fuse. all types of fireworks are banned in san jose, if you're caught, fines for first offense is $500. $700 for the second offense. $1,000 for a third, assuming the repeat offenses take place

within 18 months and the same penalties apply for the city of fremont where i'm live right now which bans all fireworks, including the so-called safe and sane. reporting live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:35 right now. get ready to hand out more cash if you want to ride b.a.r.t. next year. b.a.r.t. fares to increase, the last of four b.a.r.t. has planned. bay area attorneys are expected to file a new wave of lawsuits tied to the latest church sex abuse accusations. nearly a year ago oakland's diocese released the names of 50 priests and other clergy members credibly accused of abusing minors. many of the priests are dead and

none still work in the ministry. abuse victims will attend today's news conference. police hope this image can help track down two thieves they say used a stun gun on a best buy security guard. surveillance cameras caught the pair walking into the san bruno best buy. they stole a pair of laptops. when he guard tried to stop him they tased him. the pair was seen driving off in a silver or gray nissan or cadillac. uber and meal delivery service post mates are now officially taking the state of california to court, both companies promised the companies yesterday filed suit over the state's new labor law. that law is set to take effect tomorrow. it will require gig workers to be reclassified as employees and not contractors. but uber and post mates claim it is unconstitutional for targeting app based companies while exempting other professions. a follow-up to a story had

me tearing up earlier an act of kindness from total strangers. you may remember when we told you about the gomez nunez family earlier this month. their home burned down in a fire and while staying in a hotel their car was broken into. the family lost most of their belongings but "the mercury news" reports a los gatos family mailed them a check for $20,000. to help get them through. a new year will add more green to the state's budget when it comes to legalized pot. but it could also instead drive more users back to the black market. so some cannabis business owners fear starting tomorrow the state's new pot related fees will add up to % more for dispensaries, that means a lot of them will likely jack up their prices. of course merchants point out buying marijuana the old-fashioned way has no strings attached. >> increasing the taxes over and over a little bit every month is pushing people further into the black market.

>> a state report found that despite marijuana now being legal in california, 80% of the pot sold is still sold illegally. mike inouye no traffic now but i bet traffic in oakland is busy where there's a crash. >> you're right. overall the bay area shows a very light commute right now, but oakland this stretch of the nimitz freeway is really bad, over about three miles over two miles of backup past the coliseum, all the way to 29th. chp made it a simple entry lanes clear soon. they should have the oxygen tanks and the vehicle one of the vehicles involved in the crash clearing from the nimitz, but right now you only have two lanes and that's the reason why it's jammed up from the coliseum past 29th. i hear there's a motorcycle crash north of there, right around the curve at seventh. sounds like the rider is safely off to the shoulder and i believe the motorcyclist as well. west 580 and international boulevard have been suggesting as your options to the area because aside from that portion

of 880, everything else moves smoothly around the bay. we widen out your view here, you see the rest of the bay area, shows a smooth flow of traffic again we are of course in holiday season right now, and that's why we have the light mornings. be careful tonight. be very careful. >> all right. as we look ahead, a lot of people thinking about tonight, what will the weather be? >> i got you covered for your new year's eve forecast and look ahead at your weekend. tonight is a big night, a lot of people are going to be out and about and here is what you can expect in san francisco at the embarcadero. not too shabby for san francisco. we're talking upper 40s and 50s, but you may still want to take your coat because at the embarcadero anywhere around the coastline still gets a little chilly. it will be partly cloudy tonight, those temperatures start to dip down in the 40s right as you're leaving your celebration, please don't drink and drive. drive safe. a lot of places are offering free rides so no excuses. new year's eve inland valleys we are tracking the possibility of patchy fog. it's not expected to be completely dense which should

year? >> reporter: nothing to speak of like a couple of years ago with the thwarted terror threat around the holidays and concerns about whether there could be another threat going into the new year's celebration. police ask for people to be their eyes and ears out there, report something if you see something. they'll be focusing most of their energy on the normal crowd control when you have so many people out, especially booze in the mix looking for traffic and keeping the peace. a lot of people at the embarcadero and other areas for the celebrations. a spokesperson for sfpd tells me there is an all hands on deck approach across the entire city. >> again you'll see us all over the city tomorrow and there's a lot the public can do. we ask people to park smart, try not to leave valuables in your car. we ask people to use a rideshare or public transit, if you are drirveging.

we always ask the public to be alert if you see something, say something. flag down an officer, call 911. don't be afraid to contact us. >> reporter: people will be looking for the perfect backdrop, the bay bridge or the city skyline. people go to emeryville, so many people down on the embarcadero but san francisco police department is asking people to stay away from treasure island this year. another one of the popular spots, just because there is so much construction, a lot of the roads are closed down. there's already detours and just traffic would be a nightmare and there's not any place to park anyway. if you are coming to the city, they're encouraging you to sign up for emergency alerts in place for the past couple of years. all you have to do is text nyesf to 888777 and you'll get all the san francisco police department emergency alerts through the celebration as they come in. we're live in san francisco,

thom jensen, "today in the ba.". >> sign up for those alerts. a massive fire is burning at an anaheim restaurant. see the flames just engulfing the building there overnight. a lot of people were evacuated. no reports of injuries. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the white house has listed president trump's accomplishments for 2019. >> this as the president continues his vacation in florida. >> good morning the white house puts the economy at the top of the list of the president's accomplishments for the year and with good reason. the stock market ended the year with its best performance in two decades. unemployment is at the lowest it's been since the '60s. to that the white house adds better trade deal with the u.s. mca, securing the borders and the killing of abu bakr al baghdadi on that list. president trump's critics will point to things that didn't go

well in 2019 but one of its most alarming for conservatives is the growing national debt the biggest it's been. back when president obama was president, trump was concerned about the $16 trillion debt. that debt is now $22.5 trillion and it's growing. we continue to mopper the latest from baghdad where iraqis are protesting an american air strike against militants who support iran. they are protesting outside the u.s. embassy in some cases entered parts of the compound. keep in mind that compound is the largest in the world. the central embassy is still safe and the yellow flags belong to the political party affiliated with the shias. president trump thinks iran is behind the protest. marcus and kris, you'll bring more about that coming up. january 15th a teal with china would be signed, forcing the chinese to buy more agricultural products from us and deal with some of our concerns over intellectual property. we've been on the cusp of a deal

scrambled eggs or a coffee to go, that's how we roll around here. we don't have time for breakfast. breakfast is around midnight for us if we were to eat breakfast. i want to take you on a tour of our beautiful bay area, because this is how we're ending 2019. i'll step in this frame and showcase the beautiful city. i'll step out because it's gorgeous out there. look at the view of the golden gate bridge, talk about a stunning start to our tuesday downtown san jose equally gorgeous. the sun in the corner and orange hues peeking in, 2020 trying to roll on in. we have this equally gorgeous shot and this one is also stunning, a view from our san bruno camera, look at that. come on. if you live in the bay these are the stunning sites and we enjoy the sites headed into 2020. i hope this is a decent year. if not fresh start every day if you think about it. 38 degrees in santa cruz.

40 degrees in san jose so a little chilly but the skies are clear. you saw that in our cameras. we have live views right now but we are tracking a couple of clouds that will roll in later tonight. microclimate highs for today will be in the 50s and the 60s in san jose, 60 degrees. 57 in san francisco. 62 up through santa rosa and let's talk about that new year's eve forecast, super headed to the embarcadero. take your jacket. these are pleasant temperatures. visiting us from out of town or from california these are chilly. 50 degrees around 11:00. we'll get the clouds start to roll on in but the fog we're worried about it through inland valleys. patchy fog, temperatures colder in through inland areas, low 40s, a couple of 30s so if you will be hanging out in any of the spots you might need gloves. get the digital ones can you can use your phone. lake tahoe new year's eve, 30s. if you're headed up there, good news you don't have to worry

about the travel conditions the lake wind advisory is no longer in effect. check the traffic the chilly nights the rain chances will stay off to the north keeping us dry for new year's eve and also for new year's day. what's going to happen headed into the weekend? we get a storm that creeps on in from the corner in the north bringing the chance of scattered light showers headed into saturday. it will move out by sunday and here's what you can expect the next seven days headed into thursday, temperature also remain in the 50s and 60s for inland areas. mike, how is the traffic alert? >> good news. first of all the crash in sunol, i haven't been talking much about it. a car went up the embankment and off its wheels on its side or possibly on its roof. i haven't gotten any word about major injuries. i don't see any major slowing but it is there coming pleasanton to sunol. all the green sensors around the bay that's a great flow of traffic. we'll zoom in to the earlier traffic alert, we're breaking news here again the continuing update is all lanes are clear,

welcome back. it 16:58. here are the top stories on "today in the bay." >> first we remind you tonight's new year's eve events are illegal forever fireworks. you cannot set off your own fireworks in san jose, all fireworks are banned. if you see something, say something. the easiest way is google san jose fireworks online reporting and be directed to a site where you can fill out a form to report what you saw. an important deadline for wildfire victims including the north bay firestorm. today is the deadline for people to file claims against pg&e in connection to any fire before january 29th of 2019. at stake more than $13 billion, a figure recently negotiated
