and good morning to you. january 1st, new year's day, the first "today in the bay" newscast of the year and you made it. >> are you out there? >> somewhere in carl you can see carl the fog sticking around for us today. i don't know, did he cause trouble last night? i don't know. we'll talk about him in a bit. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. i would not want to be a street sweeper in new york today. crews worked to pick up the confetti around 3,000 pounds of it before sunrise. last night's fireworks lit up

2020 celebrations across the country including here in san francisco, new york, las vegas and seattle. and of course, the weather was top of mind for so many folks, vianey, wondering if the fog would be a problem. >> it was a little chilly. areas started to creep in. i'm hoping everybody had a good time and there were no issues. overall from what i've seen looks like the fog will be the densest this morning. we went to bed around 10:30 so right now, let's get to those current temperatures in the 40s in san jose, 44 degrees. 49 in oakland. 50 degrees in san francisco and let's look right now at where we are when it comes to the fog. santa rosa limited visibility down to about six miles and starting to notice some of that fog rolling in through the peninsula. half moon bay and coastline expect to keep the fog around for the first portion of our day, as far as our temperature trend for the afternoon here is a closer look at what you can expect in san jose a mix of sun

and clouds, temperatures in the 40s and eventually we'll start to climb into the 50s. now let's get a check of the roads. i'm hoping everybody is being safe and we don't have any overnight crashes which is good. we do have a little bit of it looks like a hazard in the south bay. it was not there before. i'll find out what that's about. expect to see holiday light traffic, a lot of businesses are closed this morning. a lot of people probably don't have work. westbound 580 grant line road to 068 only looking at 15 minutes. this morning a man is behind bars following an invasive discovery in a south bay starbucks bathroom. >> investigators say he hid two small cameras inside a starbucks on hillsdale avenue in san jose. both cameras were pointing toward the toilet. police say they found

methamphetamine inside evans' vehicle when he was arrested. the u.s. is sending about 750 soldiers to the middle east as iraqi protesters gather outside the u.s. embassy in baghdad for day two. this is is new video from the defense department showing marines from kuwait arriving as reinforcement. yesterday president trump threatened iran with strong reaction. hundreds of iranie-backed militiamen and other protesters gathered outside the american embassy in baghdad. it was one of the worst attacks on a u.s. diplomatic mission in years. they are protesting, the strikes in response to a rocket attack on an army base targeting an army contractor. on a stretch 101 some call projectile alley.

two motorists were targeted minutes apart monday night. no one was hurt. it brings the number of attacks in that area to at least 67 over the past few months. a car plunged off a cliff at half moon bay. you can see that car go from the left to the right of your screen, flying off the cliff in front of another car. there's still no sign of that car or the driver. a lexus suv went over the cliff at grey whale cove monday morning. investigators found debris from the wreck but it's unknown if that was from a previous crash. this morning you're going to be more nickelled and dimed if you ride b.a.r.t. it's a bit more than 5%. the increase is the last of four that b.a.r.t. planned. b.a.r.t. says the money will help pay for new rail cars that are maintenance teams and more frequent trains. there could be a granny unit boom in california this year as

we're down to maybe 6 miles which isn't bad but that could get worse into the next couple of hours. this is a view in san francisco and this is a little glimpse of kind of what residents and guests and visitors saw last night during the fireworks show. the fog was definitely there. they got to see the top half of the fireworks. carl the fog is always somebody we argue with. we've given him a name as a person. when it comes time for fireworks people are worried they'll in the be able to see. we have dense fog, more along half moon bay and of course around the coastline and take a look at santa rosa down to about six miles with that visibility so areas of patchy fog could continue for the first half of the morning in terms of our temperatures as you head out the door. 44 degrees in san jose. 49 in oakland. palo alto 45 degrees, san francisco 50 degrees and the rest of the nation how everybody else is welcoming the first day

of 2020, 37 degrees in new york city but at least they didn't have to worry about the rain, right about 26 degrees in albuquerq albuquerque, salt lake city, seattle and portland seeing rain and satellite radar we've got some cloudy conditions, and we will remain dry with high pressure dominating over the next couple of days. overall your microclimate highs through the afternoon will be in the low 60s for the south bay. 61 degrees in san jose. 57 in san francisco. keep in mind we're still watching those waves along the coastline. there is still a beach hazard statement in effect and high surf advisory as well because of the rising surf today and maybe into tomorrow, which means use caution near the coastline. over the next seven days a closer look at when our next chance of rain moves in early saturday morning. right now it looks like that storm system is staying far off to the north which means the only areas that might get some rain are santa rosa, napa and uki ukiah. let's look at how the roads are doing. palo alto, usually christmas and

new year's day i can count the cars. i see more cars out there in the roads as far as the overnight accident reports, great news there, no major accidents to report, no major delays. this seems to be a traffic hazard, looks like possible construction in the south bay. aside from that, the maps are green, which for us means green for go. bridge drive times westbound 580 from richmond, to richmond bridge eight minutes and westbound 80 to the bay bridge looking at seven minutes. westbound 92 toward the san mateo bridge about 12 minutes. one thing is for sure i highly doubt we'll see the metering lights turn on at the bay bridge toll plaza so there are some benefits to working on holiday mornings. at least you don't have to worry about the traffic. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. an abrupt reversal involving robert durst. you remember authorities arrested him in 2015 as an hbo documentary was being released that seemed to implicate him in

three homicides, including the death of susan berman. durst wrote a mysterious note directing police to berman's body. investigators have always maintained only berman's killer could have written that note. now to a follow-up, firefighters battling a blaze at a southern california strip mall discovered an illegal marijuana grow operation inside. it happened yesterday morning in anaheim. we showed you the video then. parts of the roof ended up collapsing. no injuries were reported. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the reblil oroville dam spillway has not been used this winter but it's ready to go when necessary. storms in 2017 left huge holes in the old spillway. reconstruction was completed in the spring and used for the first time last april. upgrades to the spillway include thicker concrete and taller walls. california could lose a congressional seat according to new estimates from the u.s.

census bureau. recent stats show many people are leaving california and moving to states like texas and florida. congressional seats based on population with estimates california could lose a seat in the house of representatives. meantime, texas is poised to gain three seats. florida would gain two. 4:50 for you right now. the carpool lane might get more crowded. california allows solo drivers with an electric car. a new law allows low income drivers in the lane if they have a secondhand electric car. in order to qualify the driver must make more than, can't make more than $65,000 a year and they just need to buy a new clean air sticker. payday will be better for some bay area workers because of a new minimum wage set to go up to $15 an hour today. local cities will get a pay boost in the new year, include belmont, menlo park and south
