right now at 6:00, several shootings happened overnight across the bay area. where police say it was a violent start to 2020. plus a tragic turn of event in the east bay. a man dies while trying to chase down thieves. why police say his death could be an important lesson. and it's a bigger bottom line for rideshare passengers in san francisco. the new law that goes into effect today that could have you shelling out more to work or a night out on the town. expect from the weather today. a lot of people are talking about this morning, the fireworks last night we were talking about it yesterday. looking clear. this is in san francisco, beautiful sight there. those fireworks right there, you can see the bay bridge in the background as well. >> then there's that. >> a beautiful way to welcome in 2020. >> it wasn't raining. carl the fog played nice and the temperatures the cloud cover, a little bit of cloud cover that we did have helped keep the temperatures a little bit warmer. now if you will be heading out this morning, kind of taking our mass transit a couple of notes for you. listen up. here is a look at transit forecast, dublin b.a.r.t. station 10:00 a.m. in the 40s. notice in the icons you see sun and clouds because we'll get more high clouds rolling through by this afternoon. our temperatures will be in the upper 50s. even a couple of mid-60s for the interior valleys and because we

have high pressure rolling in that will warm us up and also going to dry us out through the afternoon which means we're going to remain dry for the next few days before our next disturbance. if you're taking mass transit this morning, i have another note for you. this is going to be important because a lot of people have to get to work one way or another and there are special services, a holiday schedule if you're taking b.a.r.t. or caltrain, they are under a sunday service if you are taking sf mta they are under a special service. depending on what line or destination or location you're headed to, they have different hours set for today. 'not the regular schedule so the one thing you want to do is head to their website and track down your location and it will i have give you a better idea of the timing. the san francisco berry -- berry? berry? there is no service today for the ferry. they don't have anything running today but they should resume all normal hours as we head into tomorrow and into the weekend.

back to you. >> thanks, vianey. police agencies across the bay area, officers had their hands full with more than just crowd control on new year's eve. thom jensen is live outside of san francisco police headquarters tracking a number of shootings since last night. thom? >> reporter: marcus, the one that they're still looking for a suspect is one that was near a large new year's eve celebration near ft. mason, this happened at about 9:35 last night and there was a big i heart radio new year's celebration at the ft. mason center for arts and culture, not associated with the shooting. it wasn't right next to the venue but two men were shot, one of them police here in san francisco are saying with life-threatening injuries, so this morning when i drove by, the scene was already clear and still a lot of people at about 2:00 in the morning, going back

to their cars, back to their homes or mass transit from that big party. police are hoping when they're on their way to the party perhaps somebody saw something that will help them locate a suspect. meanwhile, up in the north bay, another man is hospitalized this morning after petaluma police tell us that he was shot by his neighbor not once but twice. this happened at about 5:00 in an apartment complex parking lot, right next to mckinley elementary school, that suspect is in custody. he was still on the scene when police arrived. meanwhile this morning it started off with violence in san jose this morning on fritzen street near kennedy avenue, where somebody found a man with a gunshot wound. they're still looking for what happened here. this man was taken to an ambulance and off to a hospital in san jose. police were combing the scene

looking for evidence. they are looking for anybody who knows anything about either one of the shootings. live in san francisco, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> 6:05. san francisco ended the year with the lowest homicide count of the decade. according to "the examiner" this morning, there were 41 murders in total in 2019, an 11% decrease in homicides compared to 2018. san francisco police department contributes the decline to a series of factors, including community policing and anti-violence prevention groups. this is video from our oakland traffic camera. we periodly saw fireworks shot from several areas where there were no sanctioned events. police so far not saying whether they made any arrests. in san jose, camera crews captured people shooting off fireworks despite the threat of

punishment. police are touting strict enforcement, even promoting an online site to report illegal fireworks activity. we don't know the identity of the man who died trying to chase down thieves who went into a starbucks and stole his laptop. the man ran after the thieves who jumped in a car and took off. likely dragging that victim. >> just drive fast and the young man's body swing, you know, swing to us, the car parking on the side street, right eye and the right forehead was bleeding very badly. >> police are trying to remind everyone property can be replaced but your life cannot. witnesses say the thieves drove a dark colored suv. police are not saying whether

they have a suspect description. happening today a news conference to announce sexual assault lawsuits against belomen prep in san jose. a lawsuit claims brother william farington sexually assaulted a 13-year-old student. it was filed under the recently passed california child victims act. the act extends the statute of limitations and gives victims a three-year window to bring lawsuits in cases that were previously barred by statute of limitations. we reached out to the school but the offices are closed. california leaders are having tree thinning projects but takes a long time to get the tree removals approved. regulators approved a state permitting process. leaders can use an analysis rather than starting from scratch. projects that usually take three to five years to get approved will happen in less than a year. starting today your uber and

lyft rides in san francisco will cost you more. a new tax was voted into effect for all rideshare companies with rides that start in city limits. lyft and uber have to pay a 3.25% tax on that private ride. it drops to 1.5% on the shared ride. some of the biggest waves in months are rolling into the northern california coastline. later today the waves mavericks are supposed to surpass 35 feet. headed out to the beach don't leave your pets unattended and don't turn your back on the ocean. we saw it in the video a few moments ago how dangerous that can be. >> little kids especially want to dash around and see the water that, is dangerous because they're just so small. they can get swept away. >> that's how they got their name sneaker waves. you're walking along and next thing you know there it is.

this is what we're monitoring, strong wind offshore is sending that swell and if you look at the colors here, this gives you an idea of just how tall those waves are. we have at red at 17 feet and purple at 20 feet. there is a high surf advisory because of the large breakers. the rising surf will continue through today and even into tomorrow, so just avoid swimming all together. to start off the new year we can expect to see on and off fog for the next two weeks so today is a great day to head outside and enjoy let's look at how the roads are doing. we are seeing a very empty bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights, so just how fantastic are those drive times? let's take a look. we've got the speed sensors right now up and running, nothing to report, the chp reports are quiet and your drive times are looking good. westbound 92 toward the san mateo bridge 13 minutes.

"today in the bay's" garvin thomas shows us the memorable moment. >> reporter: the petaluma high school football team going into their last game of this season. >> on your mark, get set, go. >> reporter: did not have what coach rick crist would call a good record. >> it was a tough year. it was a tough year for the wins and losses. >> reporter: but for that final game against rival casa grande, coach crist had a play up his sleeve he knew would turn the trojans' losing record into a winning season. >> we ran flex 25 draw, and he was the draw. >> he is aidan spillane, a 17-year-old senior with cerebral palsy which makes it hard for aidan to speak but when it comes to football it's easy to understand. >> throw it.

>> reporter: aidan's dad, brett, says his son fell in love with the sport when he was a little boy. being a part of that team brett knew would mean the world to aidan. >> prior to the freshman year and during that summer, i called up coach and said is there any way to get aidan involved in the team in any capacity. the coach said absolutely, we'd love to, maybe make him the water boy. >> reporter: coach crist never regretted that decision for a moment. >> didn't miss one practice, not one time. not one game, not one practice. he embodies everything as a coach you want your program to be. he's all about us instead of him. >> reporter: at the end of the last game of his last season as water boy, coach wanted the

nation starting their first day? here it is. look at the east coast, new york city 37 degrees. boston 39. meanwhile in florida, 66 degrees. down through the south and dallas 44. and in denver, pretty cold spot 36 degrees. if you're headed to portland, seattle or mizzoula expect rain. that may impact travel conditions if you have family. let's look at the temperature trend through the afternoon because we will get a better mix of sun and clouds and temperatures in the 50s by about 11:00 a.m. we'll be in the upper 50s and san jose is expected to top out in the low 60s. in areas like concord through some of the interior valleys we could see mid-60s. at about 12:00 we'll be at 59 degrees and by 1:00 we will be in the 60 degree mark. satellite radar i want to show you what's going on, because as i mentioned we're getting some cloud cover.

if you look at radar looks like there's some rain up there. there is a system off to our north, bringing a little bit of that rain to the far pacific north, so medford area, where i said some rain was up there, it's not going to impact us. we'll remain dry for today and into tomorrow but we could see some areas of fog start to form. we already saw a little bit in san francisco, 59 degrees. remaining dry through friday with a lot of cloud cover rolling in because this next system headed into saturday, that was going to bring our best chance of seeing spotty showers through the early morning, for san francisco a high of 55 and moves out quickly by about 4:00, 5:00 the system out of the area and a dry saturday night and dry sunday looking ahead in to san francisco. inland temperatures again expect to be a little bit warmer today compared to yesterday, 65 degrees for thursday. by friday, when we're monitoring that system, right now the models are showing this as not a

still a busy morning for police agencies across the bay area. officers had their hands full with more than just crowd control over the night. "today in the bay's" thom -- right now we go to bob redell talking about a situation at a starbucks, a frightening situation. talk to us about what was found inside that restroom. >> people found two cameras late sunday afternoon. and san jose police have linked this man, take a look at his mug shot, sean evans, a 37-year-old resident of san jose who police arrested for invasion of privacy and drug related offenses. police tell us that someone called 911 to report that someone found a camera in the drain pipe in front of the toilet.

police found a second camera underneath the sink which was also in front of the toilet. officers on the scene found evans in a parked vehicle outside the starbucks, inside this vehicle, evans allegedly had electronic devices linking him to the cameras in the bathroom. police say they also found methamphetamine and a glass pipe for smoking drugs. evans had been wanted for a prior possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:33 right now. breaking news out of iraq. the u.s. is sending about 750 soldiers to the middle east as iraqi protesters continue to gather outside the u.s. embassy in baghdad for day two. this is new video from the defense department showing marines from kuwait arriving as reinforcement. yesterday president trump threatened iran with strong action over the embassy clashes.

the protests started yesterday with hundreds of iran-backed militiamen and protesters gathered outside the american embassy. it was one of the worst attacks on a u.s. diplomatic mission in years. the militiamen are protesting deadly u.s. airstrikes that targeted an iran-backed militia over the weekend killing 25 fighters. those strikes in response to a rocket attack on an army base that killed a u.s. contractor. you need to hear this, if you have a sick baby. a voluntary recall on liquid ibuprofen is expanding. it was made by tryspharma and sold at walmart and cvs, the equate or the cvs brand. some batches have higher levels of ibuprofen than written on the label and that could be dangerous for infects affected by the adverse effects of the drug.

on a stretch 101 some call projectile alley. two motorists were targeted minutes apart monday night. no one was hurt. it brings the number of attacks in that area to at least 67 over the past few months. >> 6:35 for you right now. this morning we're going to be a little bit more nickel and diming for a ride on b.a.r.t. because fares will increase 10 to 40 cents per trip that starts today. he's a little more than 5%. the increase is the last of four increases that b.a.r.t. planned. b.a.r.t. says the money will help pay for new rail cars, better maintenance teams and more frequent trains. there could be a granny unit boom in california this year as new laws also called accessory dwelling units, adus, go into effect today. no longer a minimum lot size requirement or any requirement for how far the unit has to be from the street. as we've been reporting, bay area cities like san jose, oakland and san francisco are

already changing rules to allow more granny units and they've seeing a big spike in applications. a car plunged off a cliff at half moon bay. you can see that car go from the left to the right of your screen, flying off the cliff in front of another car. there's still no sign of that car or the driver. a lexus suv went over the cliff at grey whale cove monday morning. investigators found debris from the wreck but it's unknown if that was from a previous crash. new efforts to go green in california mean new standards for light bulbs. standard light bulbs burn out very quickly. so consumers have to keep buying new ones every year. that hurts the pocketbook and hurts the environment. now new standards require light bulbs to emit more light per watt so they can last longer and bans the sale of standard light

bulbs and that new law goes into effect today. just open the window this morning. >> looking out on the weekend. >> i don't know if this is what you want to see. the chilly weather, a lot of people participating in the polar bear plunge an annual event, you probably heard about it, happening at noon at ocean beach and participants first ride their bikes down the highway in san francisco and jump into the pacific ocean. just a heads up for you if you're out there, looking out your window near that area, both events clothing is optional. >> in case you're wondering why it's a wide shot, we're not zooming in at all. >> they get their blood pumping with the bicycle ride. >> i'm taking a nice shower, maybe a bath. no, just a shower, too much

work. >> you're not going to put your bath bomb in there, the bubbles? >> new year, new year. >> new year, new nap. >> nap today, it will be cloudy and good. saturday may be the day you want to nap. it will be raining in the morning. i like the rainy starts to our day. if you don't work on saturday good for you. 50 degrees at 8:00 a.m. and the coast 10:00 a.m. will be at about 54 degrees. the thing with this storm we're monitoring on saturday is that it's far up to the north. models are showing the majority of the rain to the north bay which means santa rosa, napa those areas will get a better chance of seeing the majority of the rain but as we head toward inland areas there's a good chance of seeing spotty showers. as far as how much rain it's not a big rainmaker. we're talking about traces just below possibly even less than a tenth of an inch. it won't be a complete washout of a saturday.

officers had their hands full. >> thom jensen is outside of police headquarters tracking a number of shootings that happened last night. >> reporter: three that we know about so far since last night. one involved two people being shot close to a large new year's celebration here in san francisco. at ft. mason near where the big i heart radio new year's eve party was last night at the ft. mason arts and culture center, not far from there, not associated with it, two people shot. one according to san francisco police with life-threatening injuries. police were not on the scene when i went by this morning. there were a lot of people returning from that party at about 2:00 this morning. police are hoping maybe somebody who was going to that party may have seen something and will be able to give them a call and help them from w their investigation. they're looking for a suspect this morning. they are not looking for a suspect up in the north bay in petaluma, where at about 5:00

last night police there is a a man shot his neighbor in the apartment complex parking lot, this was right next to mckinley elementary school, again at about 5:00. they have not given us a motive for this shooting at this point. we don't know why it erupted into a shooting and meanwhile while they were ending in 2019 with shooting, san jose was beginning 2020 with a shooting this morning, after somebody found this man who was still on a stretcher being taken to an ambulance with a gunshot wound this morning in east san jose. this was on fritzen street near kennedy avenue. police also looking for any clues this morning combing the scene for clues like here in san francisco. san jose police are also hoping a witness may come forward and let them know whoo w.h.o. a suspect is or what the motive was for this shooting also this morning. we are live in san francisco,

thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thank you, tom. 6:45 now. this just in, chp is now investigating this crash in sunol. a wrecked white dodge pickup truck on sheridan road hit a power pole. power is out in the neighborhood though pg&e is working to repair the power pole and restore power. no word what caused the crash or the condition of the driver. now to a follow-up, firefighters battling a blaze at a southern california strip mall discovered an illegal marijuana grow operation inside. it happened yesterday. this was in anaheim. the cause of the fire is under investigation. an abrupt reversal involving a real estate heir, robert durst who has been fighting murder charges in the death of his friend in the year 2000. authorities arrested durst in 2015 as an hbo documentary was being released to implicate him,

seemed to imp indicate him in three different homicides including the death of susan berman his friend. durst wrote a mysterious note directing police to berman's body. investigators have always maintained only berman's killer could have written that note. california allows solar drivers in the carpool lane if they have an electric car. low income drivers are allowed in the lane if they have a secondhand electric car. in order to qualify the driver cannot make more than $65,000 a year but they have to buy a new clean air sticker. so in about an hour, the world famous rose parade is kicking off. we'll watch it on tv. thousands waited overnight in pass dee to see the floats while millions will watch it just like us.

first time at the rose parade. tell me how the night was for you. >> we got here at about 2:00 a.m., found a spot here on the curb. this is the first time i've ever been here so i didn't know what to expect. i heard get here early so that's what we did, bundled up as best as we could. the cold didn't affect us as much as i think we thought it might. it's in the 20s back in iowa right now so it was a little bit chilly but we made it through. >> reporter: what are you so excited about for the parade? >> most excited just to see the floats. i've always, kind of blown my mind just that they can take the floats and build them completely out of flowers. that's the coolest thing to me so i'm excited to see that for the first time. >> reporter: ben, thank you so much. we saw some of the floats yesterday, the detail on this, you guys, just amazing, the flowers, the bark, the beans, intricate detail. it's beautiful and just behind me you're seeing the stands are open here on colorado boulevard and marcus, kris, i want to say

we'll remain dry, coast, bay and inland is cloudier today compared to yesterday. it will be sort of a day with peeks of sunshine. santa rosa 62 degrees. some areas might get more sunshine. 61 degrees in san jose and we're still dealing with the dangerous waves along the bay area coast through tomorrow, a high surf advisory. stay away from the ocean. when is our next chance of seeing rain in the bay area? i've been talking about that. headed into saturday our best chance is going to be late friday, showers are possible, mainly in the north bay, ukiah, santa rosa, so the rest of the week shapes out to a dry, milder week ahead with cold overnight lows. a quick check of the traffic, not much to tell you there, a nice view of the bay bridge toll plaza, this is a morning to admire how little traffic we have throughout the bay area. i'm going to give you a tour. san mateo bridge looking good, the span looking good and a quick look at palo alto. no accidents to report at this hour. >> thank you very much, vianey.

toilet. police found a second camera underneath the sink which was also in front of the toilet. technology linked him to the crimes, he was arrest the for invasion of privacy and drug related offenses. the u.s. sending about 750 soldiers to the middle east as iraqi protesters gather outside the u.s. embassy in baghdad for a second day of protests. this is new video from the defense department showing marines from kuwait arriving as reinforcement. yesterday president trump threatened iran with strong action over the embassy clashes. the protests started yesterday with hundreds of iran-backed militiamen and protesters gathered outside the american embassy. it was one of the worst attacks on a u.s. diplomatic mission in years. the militiamen are protesting deadly u.s. airstrikes that targeted an iran-backed militia over the weekend killing 25 fighters. those strikes in response to a rocket attack on an army base that killed a u.s. contractor. we still don't know the identity of the man who died

tragically in oakland, while trying to chase down thieves who came into the starbucks and stole his laptop. it happened yesterday in montclaire. the man ran after the thieves who jumped in a car and took off liking dragging the man who struck another car. the thieves drove a dark colored suv. police are not saying if they have a suspect description. some of the biggest waves in months are rolling on to the northern california coastline. the waves in mavericks are supposed to surpass 35 feet later today. if you are headed out to the beach to celebrate new year's day, do not leave your pets unattended, don't let your kids near the water line and don't ever turn your back on the water. >> we see it can cause some scary, dangerous situations. other than that, the weather outside today in the bay area is not too bad. >> i'm going to call it comfortable weather. >> i like it. >> it will be in the 50s and 60s and won't be too sunny.
