5:00 am
rising tensions possibly expected at your gas pump. next ahead, live team coverage from here at home and washington, d.c. and a new round of rain taking aim at the bay area, just in time for the weekend. we'll track the time as nbc bay area continues right now. good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us on this friday morning. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez. something we're talking about in the newsroom, the golden globe awards, what is new this year and how the stars are gearing up and what you need to put on your watch list. that's usually how it works out for me. ricky gervais is the host and always a fun night because they don't just sit in the audience. >> this one is much more casual and friendly. >> they have some cocktails, too, kind of loosens things up. >> also makes for better expressions. >> and you want to see the reactions when ricky gervais is emceeing. let's check with traffic in
5:01 am
a minute but check your weather. rain. >> rain and a little bit less cloudy. running a few degrees colder through the north bay. santa cruz as well 41 degrees. 43 degrees in san jose. 38 in rose. how much cooler are we running compared to the past 4 hou24 ho? look at pacifica, about 13 degrees cooler than yesterday so what about that rain? your temperature trend for today will include a lot of cloudiness. i'll take you through the rain time line shortly. let's check in with mike. >> rain time line vianey said that. traffic time line we have that as well and in fact the time line we're getting shorter as far as the drive, if you're paying cash from oakland side, we have fewer cars in the backup and still don't have all the lanes open. we still have that one closed, so of that early commute we talk about the early bhurs we see 5:00 tends to loosen things up a little bit as they open up one more lane and traffic should build though, maybe 7:30/8:00 and things will thin once again.
5:02 am
contra costa county and the rest of the bay moving just fine right now though, guys, back to you. mike, we're continuing to watch the breaking news in the middle east, tens of thousands of people from tehran to baghdad are taking to the streets after the u.s. announced it killed iran's top military leader. a targeted air strike carried out against his convoy in baghdad at the direction of course of president trump. >> but without congressional approval that's the interesting part here. this morning, we have live team coverage. "today in the bay's" bob redell is tracking the possible impact you could see immediately at the gas pump, but first we want to go to tracie potts in washington, d.c., with the long-term political impact of the air strike. tracie, this is a quickly developing story and one that we're watching really closely. >> and one with a lot of moving parts, kris and scott, because there's the reaction here in washington. congress not being consulted, the reaction by iraq, the president telling nbc this morning this is a fragile situation. of course everyone waiting to see how iran will react, and
5:03 am
then there are americans on the ground in iraq. the state department this morning telling them to get out. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> reporter: new video this morning. the secretary of state says it shows iraqis dancing in the streets after president trump ordered an air strike at the baghdad airport that killed qasem soleimani the head of iran's secret elite quds force. >> he ordered the killing of hundreds of americans. >> reporter: iran militia leader muhandes was also killed. >> the consequences of this could be unbelievable. >> reporter: the big concern in washington this morning is the u.s. prepared for iran's response? >> they are going to try to cause a tremendous amount of pain in response to this. >> i pray with all of my heart that the trump administration has a plan and a strategy. >> reporter: hundreds more u.s. troops have been sent in. this airstrike came after two
5:04 am
days of violent protests at the u.s. embassy in iraq by pro-iranian demonstrators and after iranian militias targeted u.s. troops. >> enough is enough. this is part of iran's maligned behavior. >> reporter: president trump insists he is not trying to start a war. >> do i want to? no. i want to have peace. i like peace. >> reporter: in a statement, house speaker nancy pelosi says this air strike risks provoking further dangerous escalation of violence and was done without consulting congress. and this morning, iran's supreme leader is promising severe revenge for soleimani's death and has already replaced him with his deputy. back to you. >> tracie potts in washington, we should point out donald trump a minute ago tweeted "iran has never won a war but never lost a negotiation." >> interesting. all of this is having an impact on crude oil prices, the short term. >> how it affects us here at
5:05 am
home. bob redell in milpitas with his continuing team coverage. bob, what do you know about prices at the pump? >> reporter: well right now it's not clear what impact, if any, this is going to have in the price at the pump, when you're filling up on your way to work this morning, clearly not impact we'll see today but talking about in the coming days, it will depend clearly on how much the price of oil stays up, and by how much. now, we have reached out to someone who tracks these kinds of things, waiting to hear back from them. if we do, we'll let you know what they say. we know the price of oil has surged by almost 4%, after it was announced last night the united states killed iranian general soleimani in an air strike which puts the price for a barrel of oil at just under $69. that's the highest price since september, when iran attacked oil facilities in saudi arabia. that military strike sent our gas prices up here up 25 to 30 cents a gallon in the bay area.
5:06 am
prices have since come down. according to aaa, the average price for a gallon of gas in san jose is around 3.5, oakland just under 3.60. sf around 3.65. not clear what impact it will have on gas prices in the bay area. reporting live in milpitas, ready ready, "today in the bay." >> bob, we're watching everything that may happen throughout the day regardi ing crisis a and get the latest on breaking news on the nbc bay area app and at nbcbayarea.com. this morning, a man is dead following a high speed police chase in the north bay. it ended on sir francis drake drive in greenbray last night. chp spotted a man hitting cars with a tire iron in san rafael, and that's when the chase started. they followed him to greenbray, where he ran a red light. he was t-boned by a white pickup truck and hit a light pole and that's how he died at the scene. the officer and the driver of the white pickup truck were not
5:07 am
hurt. in san francisco, a bicyclist is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, following a crash in the richmond district, this happened at 43rd and fulton last night. police say the driver of the car involved stayed at the scene, and is cooperating with the investigation. 5:07. you may remember we first showed you this dash cam video showing a car going off the edge at gray whale cove. there it goes. chp rescue crews have been looking for this car in the air, by land and by sea. they say the weather is just too bad, so they have suspended the search. for now, investigators are going to keep checking missing people and vehicle reports. the vta is working to make leadership changes as it faces some public criticism as palo alto online reports the transit agency's board was given low marks from 70% of riders in a recent performance survey. a recent civil grand jury report also blamed poor board leadership for causing the vta to become one of the most
5:08 am
inefficient transit agencies not in california, but in the country. now directors are looking at the results of an independent review to try to make some improvements. among the solutions are scheduling practices to ensure fewer missed board meetings and also reconfiguring the system for appointing directors. new year, bringing new and tighter building codes to palo alto, including more reliance on electricity, less reliance on natural gas and new construction projects and tighter demolition requirements. a live look at the road to tahoe if you're headed there this weekend you want to take it slow. there's snow and ice. november and december storms left plenty of snow. according to the recent snow survey, it's at 97% of average for january. what really counts is how much snow is around in april. we're at 44% of what's needed to fill reservoirs with drinking water. >> we do like cidrinking water. >> jerry brown went up there and
5:09 am
there was no snow at all and pretended. >> it was dirt. >> very effective. vianey, lovely to see the purple behind you especially for folks who like to see. >> it is. we are tracking more chance of some showers and snow showers headed into saturday night and into sunday as well, but as you know, the sierra snowpack makes up about 30% of our water resources when it begins to melt in the spring. it also determines if we're going to have enough water in our reserve sooirs when we don't enough rain. it's a big component in terms of when it's not raining. hour-by-hour outlook i want to give you a preview, the rain will move in late tonight. by really late i mean late. 11:00 midnight, probably when you're sleeping, most of the bay area is not going to get a lot of rain out of this. if you live in santa rosa, napa, san rafael, you're probably the first to see some of the showers overnight, and then it breaks apart pretty quickly but i'm going to help you and guide you through your saturday forecast coming up shortly. for now, i know that mike has been keeping a very close eye on the roads.
5:10 am
>> vianey that's nice. i'll help you and guide you, just point to stuff. green, that's what i'm pointing to right now. little blips over here south 85, coming off the 101 split, and crews start to move and clear from their overnight work, thank them for all the work and be careful when you see the flashing lights. we have slowing north 242, cleared from the earlier crash headed up toward concord and highway 4 and at the bay bridge we see a little slowing there at the toll plaza. i showed that to you as well. we have the cash lanes over on the left approach. we'll crack them in a couple minutes. over here oakland we have a good volume of traffic, very smooth, the southbound side hasn't seen this much traffic at this hour, for a few days, about a week. back to you. >> thank you, mike. there's a major recall to tell you about, next on "today in the bay," we'll tell you about that issue reported with thousands of subarus this morning. >> i'll be listening to that one. plus the victim to a massive erosion, a house falls off a lake michigan bluff. look at the damage there. trending this morning, an

5:14 am
i'll have details on that coming up. >> look at this, it's fremont, a smooth flow of traffic past the truck scales, which are right there, kind of darkly, not darkly, if at all, an arrow on the other side of the freeway. no problems, light traffic flow. we'll show you how the rest of the bay is. good morning, i'm rahel solomon at cnbc headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is set to open sharply lower as global markets continue to react to u.s. air strikes that killed iran's top general who led a special forces unit of the elite ref nugs guards. the news adding to the simmering tensions between the u.s. and iran, and raising concerns of possible retaliation. oil prices spiking on the news, up more than 4%. gold is higher as traders seek out so-called safe haven investments. markets in asia and europe lower after u.s. stocks rallied to

kick off the new year with the dow up more than 300 points to a record high. lowe's plans to hire more than 53,000 employees this spring, which is the busiest season for home improvement projects. the retailer says the hires will include full, part-time and seasonal positions. lowe's will hold the first walk-in hiring event on january 8.as stores where spring weather arrives earlier in the season such as florida, southern california, and hawaii. and apple may be ready to make a long-term commitment to streaming tv. it has struck a five-year production deal with a former head of hbo to create movies, shows and documentaries for apple tv plus. "variety" reports the focus will likely be on a small amount of high-profile content rather than flooding apple with shows. scott and kris, back to you. >> there's so much tv to watch it's amazing. >> i was looking through my tv the other day and it was like i can't -- why did i stop watching that? i can't remember. >> rahel, what do you watch? >> it's hard to keep track of. honestly these days i watch real
5:16 am
i have t reality tv. it's not going anywhere. i'm not proud of it. >> my sister watches "90 day fiance" but i was watching married at first sight. >> i watch "squawk talk" on cnbc. >> i watch "sand hill road." >> absolutely. close the satellite window. there, i won. close it. close it. all right. >> i don't like "sand hill road." man, i caught myself in a fib. >> say you're in your subaru driving down the road "sand hill road" available on google play and itunes, you're in the rain and listening. you want to know subaru is being recalled. more than 250,000 cars and suvs because the vehicles can lose power potentially cause crashes. the problem involves the engine's ventilation valve. i'm told there is a faulty part. it allows oil to get into places where oil is not supposed to go.
5:17 am
subaru is working to notify owners. tealer also inspect and replace that valve free of charge. >> thanks for always digging a friend out of a hole. talk about an uber driver. >> latanya young enrolled in georgia state university back in 2010. she had to drop out because of almost $700 it was a hold on her account. $700, so she started working for uber and lyft to make money so she could go back to school. she's picking up a passenger, kevin esch and told him the story. he decided to step in, not only did he pay the hold on her account, he gave her $120 tip. latanya was able to finish her degree and graduated last month. kevin was there to cheer her on. oh, my gosh. that's so cool. >> great. >> this is a nice turn of events. >> yes. >> i like to say that i use the, i like the quiet ride but i do encounter some really interesting uber drivers. >> fascinating. >> yes, with some great stories and i love it even more when they find out i speak spanish.
5:18 am
if you don't mind maybe in english wood. >> i guess. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> now scott doesn't know what to say. >> just wanted to know if it's going to be rain. >> i like scott's shameless plug. >> how is the weather on sand hill road? >> view of downtown san jose, not as cloudy as the skyline that we were seeing yesterday but every time we don't see clouds, guess what that means for us? it's colder because cloud serves as a blanket to keep the temperatures just a little bit warmer, so right now, a live look at the golden gate bridge, and we are expecting to see those temperatures climb just a little bit, but the current temps in napa 37 degrees. santa rosa 38. look at san jose 43. santa cruz 41, and this is a 24-hour temperature change. most noticeable in the south bay. san jose 7 degrees colder this morning, in through the mountain
5:19 am
view area, also about 7 degrees colder and your microclimate highs for this afternoon will be actually a few degrees warmer. so in san jose, a high of about 66 degrees, you might not even need like a crazy sweater today. you should be okay with just a light sweater. inland areas by the afternoon, this is our next storm system that we're tracking now. it's a very weak system. the reason why it's weak for us is because we're at the bottom end of this storm, so notice how the majority of that is focused over vancouver and portland. right here this cloud cover that you see moving in, that's where we're going to get a little bit of that rain in through the overnight hours. we're talking midnight to about 7:00 a.m., when the majority of that rain moves in. hour by hour outlook we're clear, we're clear, we're clear and right around 11:00 it makes its approach. midnight overnight, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 a.m., probably while you're sleeping before you're awake the rain moves out and breaks apart and we get a lot of cloud cover. so if you're going to be joining me tomorrow at 7:00 a.m., since scott shamelessly plugged his, kira and i will be here tomorrow
5:20 am
at 7:00 a.m. and going to be guiding you through that, but spotty chance of showers less than a tenth of an inch. not a complete wipeout of a day into sunday, 62 degrees and we have a great first week of 2020, the things will get -- the things? the temperatures will get even warmer and the skies will get even sunnier. >> we like to speak in general terms, vianey. so you can make everybody understand the things we're looking at. these things a few backing up, the cars at the bay bridge. it. everything was loaning up. we expect the last of the toll lanes to be completely open and not, that's why we have some folks sticking around because the first wave eased up and that second wave is going to start any minute. we'll track that and see if there's any problems but right now not even a lot of traffic. that's the left approach where i showed you the few cars waiting, and why there's a queue for anything other than green headed toward the bay bridge and across toward san francisco, concord, walnut creek, all great. here is rodeo, san pablo, richmond. upper east shore freeway at speed as well.
5:21 am
looking toward vasco road tri-valley connector brentwood, byron, vasco 580 about 18 minutes. under 20 minutes registering and waze predicts it will stay that way for much of the morning. we have a short-lived commute building up toward 7:00 and after 7:00 things start to clear up once again. green sensors around the rest of the bay but there is one incident a disabled vehicle reported on the san mateo bridge waiting until chp or the bridge crew can confirm where exactly that is and whether or not lanes are affected but over on the peninsula side here is palo alto and easy light drive, 101, 2802340 problem, past sand hill road, scott. over here mass transit, an easy drive, folks, as we travel across the rails as well, no problems and that's a great option. back to you. >> mike, i'll get you a coffee during the break. rolling out the red carpet. the golden globes changes made this year. you're watching "today in the bay." trump: obamacare is a complete
5:22 am
and total disaster. let obamacare implode. nurse: these wild attacks on healthcare hurt the patients i care for. i've been a nurse in new york for thirty years. i know the difference leadership can make because i saw what mike bloomberg did as mayor. vo: mayor bloomberg helped lower the number of uninsured by 40%, covering 700,000 more new yorkers, life expectancy increased. he helped expand health coverage to 200,000 more kids and upgraded pediatric care--- infant mortality rates dropped to record lows.
5:23 am
and as mayor, mike bloomberg always championed reproductive health for women. so when you hear mike bloomberg on health care... mrb: this is america. we can certainly afford to make sure that everybody that needs to see a doctor can see a doctor, everybody that needs medicines to stay healthy can get those medicines. nurse: you should know, he did it as mayor, he'll get it done as president. mrb: i'm mike bloomberg and i approve this message.

5:26 am
the total ban the president promised in september. >> i would have preferred to have seen all flavors banned. i don't like to leave any gateways open for kids to become addicted to nicotine. >> the ban will also not affect liquid flavors that contain thc, what researchers believe may be connected to the vaping related illnesses and deaths. the 77th annual golden globe awards are coming up this weekend and the stage is set star-studded red carpet is expected. host ricky gervais will once again host but this time his last time and sure to go out with a bang. gervais is known for turn willing the night normally reserved for glamour into a flame-throwing roast. >> i'm in this for my amusement. if you don't care about the backlash, it's great. >> moving on to the nominees, netflix is set to have a very big night, the streaming service is entering the evening with a record 17 nominations, and you could see if your favorite movie

high-rise and speed sensors not showing the slowdown yet but the volume will build and i am hoping they'll hook that up and clear those cars very quickly. that's one of the only incidents we see out there. the bay bridge toll plaza, we also see a little blip over at the toll plaza itself, contra costa county, you're at speed at the toll plaza. you have just this mild backup here, but we still have one cash lane. okay, looks like we have the cash lane open or that car will be a report soon. we'll send it back to you. back to that breaking news the whole world is watching so closely. >> a sudden escalation of tensions in the middle u.s. u.s. dporss hit soleimani with an air strike on his convoy near the airport in baghdad. a leading member of the shia militia in iraq was also killed, as you can imagine the strike is sparking outrage in iran,
5:33 am
promising retaliation as well. some in iraq celebrating u.s. embassy telling american citizens to leave iraq immediately. some leaders around the world fearing this could cause a sudden escalation and a dangerous round of new conflict. the story is developing, stay with us, and nbc news. we're going to have a live report from capitol hill coming up in the next half hour. the "today" show will have specialized live coverage as well starting at 7:00 this morning. later today, we expect to learn more about a violent attack in dublin, that happened on monegan street wednesday night. wednesday night, where neighbors say dozens of police officers responded to an exchange of gunfire. police say a man who lives there shot his ex-girlfriend and a man with a gun, when they forced their way into his home after he opened the door. the man left after the shooting and called 911.
5:34 am
neighbors describe a very scary scene. >> i saw them carry a body out and it was like a sack of potatoes, hands, feet, and they removed that from the front porch and then there was another person on the ground. >> neighbors say the man moved in just a few days ago. the name of the 28-year-old woman who was shot has not been released. a new housing proposal could help the affordable housing crisis in san francisco. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live at the golden gate bridge with what the taxes would bring. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. "the san francisco examiner" says this would bring about 6,000 more affordable housing units. now the plan would take them property tax money and use it for affordable housing. the state legislators would have to approve this plan. some of the agencies that might be concerned about this plan include the school district and b.a.r.t., community college, the property taxes are also usually split up with those entities as well. according to "the examiner" the former redevelopment agency, now
5:35 am
called the office of community infrastructure and investment, says the median home value in san francisco last year was $1.4 million, and the median market rent for an apartment was $4,500. this agency is saying there's a need for affordable housing. now, we are still checking with state legislators to see when they will pick up this proposal. rormg live at the golden gate bridge, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:35. oakland police looking for one suspect in connection with the death of a man who had chased down those thieves. charges for the other two suspects could be filed today. all this unfolded monday at starbucks in montclair. the man took off after the thieves that swiped his laptop and got dragged by the getaway car. police say the surveillance cameras played a key role in

5:37 am
is that when you go to the dmv to get that real i.d., you have to bring certain identifying documents. one of them is your passport, or at least that's what people thought. the state department says the passports are being rejected as a form of i.d. you have to bring your birth certificate. if you change your name after marriage or divorce, you have to bring your marriage license as well. marin county taking an aim at speeding drivers, today county leaders set up these five electronic speed signs that show your speed as you go by along roads that have the most number of speeding complaints. county leaders say they hope those signs will help people slow down. >> or at least make them feel guilty. >> well when they're flashing at you, means you're going too fast and that may not be the only flashing lights you see. >> others accompany that, join in. exactly, like scott said, watch your speeds because others are watching your speed. over here, you need to watch out, because westbound 92 across
5:38 am
that floot section you see a little clustering. not a lot of brake tapping but we see that there is more congestion midway across that flat section, told by chp one of the vehicles that are disabled on the bridge over on the right shoulder of that narrow right shoulder, another is sticking out into the slow lane about a mile down. a couple of spots along that midway between midpoint between the hayward side and the foster city side. you marked it on the map there. you see a little slowing on the speed sensors. the rest of the bay shows a smooth, easy drive, no major problems getting over toward the bay bridge is looking great as well. we have no problems contra costa county, at the toll plaza, that backup we had they opened that last cash lane we showed it to you last report and completely clear. our weekend is now upon us, the first weekend a lot of folks have resolutions that want to go outside, what's it going to be? >> it's going to rain. >> we'll skip to next week. it's all off now.
