it's monday, january 6th "early today" st and a good morning to you. i'm cori coffin. >> and i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news from iran where mourners have packed the streets gathering in tehran for the main funeral for the top iranian military commander, qasem soleimani. he was killed at an american airstrike ordered by president trump. the ceremony comes as iran fully ends its commitment to the limits created by the 2015 nuclear deal for the latest on this, we are joined by chris in beirut. i hope you can hear me among those bells tolling. what's the latest fallout and response from iran >> reporter: yes, frances. life goes on as usual in the middle east. you can hear the church bells behind me. nevertheless, everybody is on edge waiting to see what happens next following the assassination of soleimani starting in iran they wasted little time in electing a

heads up on these things so now in a letter obtained overnight, nancy pelosi says this week congress will vote on a war powers resolution to limit what the president can do when it comes to iran, specifically that if he doesn't get the okay from congress, he has to scale back and end these hostilities within 30 days that she says are threatening american lives, our troops, and our diplomats with iran promising retaliation as you noted, cori, one of the key issues is that congress was not consulted in advance >> there is usually a congressional consulting process. it's both constitutionally required, but it's also important because, one, you potentially get members of congress to buy in ahead of time and, two, they may ask that hard question that's not asked in an insular group. and, three, you consult your allies because we don't want to go this alone.
